Former football player for the Giants, 49ers and Colts, Y. A. Tittle died October 8 at the age of 90. He wrote Nothing Comes Easy: My Life in Football and Y. A. Tittle: I Pass!
Author Nora Johnson died October 5 at the age of 84. She wrote The World of Henry Orient and Coast to Coast: A Family Romance.
Former U.S. Poet Laureate Richard Wilbur died October 14 at the age of 96. A few of his collections include The Disappearing Alphabet and The Pig in the Spigot.
Chess Grandmaster William Lombardy died October 13 at the age of 79. His books include Chess Opening Traps, Chess Panorama and Chess for Children, Step by Step.
Former UK middle-weight boxing champion Terry Downes died October 6 at the age of 81. He wrote My Bleeding Business.
Author and artist Marian Cannon Schlesinger died October 14 at the age of 105. Her books include Snatched from Oblivion: A Cambridge memoir, I Remember: A Life of Politics, Painting and People and The Colonial Williamsburg Coloring Book.

Poet Fay Chiang died October 20 at the age of 65. Her work includes A Railroad on Gold Mountain and Miwa's Song.
Professor Hugh Kearney died October 1st 2017 age 93. He wrote The British Isles: A History of Four Nations and Ireland: Contested Ideas of Nationalism and History
Former President and CEO of Porsche, Peter W. Schutz, died October 28 at the age of 87. He wrote The Driving Force: Extraordinary Results from Ordinary People.
John Mattock, a rose grower, died 23rd October 2017 age 91. He wrote The Reader's Digest Gardener's Guide to Growing Roses. He was often asked whether he had named a rose after his wife Sheila and usually replied "No, as I would be unable to say whether it was better in a bed or up against a wall."
Jane Juska died October 24th 2017 aged 84. In 1999 she was 66 divorced and retired and decided she wanted a lot of sex with a lot of men to which end she put an ad in the New York Review of Books. Her memoir A Round-Heeled Woman was the result. Followed by Unaccompanied Women and a book about Mrs Bennet's marriage in Jane Austen.
