I'm thinking about taking screen shots of the original sale page so when they get deleted later on we'll still have it here. And now that Photobucket is what they are, lots of photos here on LT are no longer available, including mine. So maybe we can get some of them reloaded at some point also.

I keep the leaflet brochures that come in the mail for each book. The price is always difficult to find on those things but they probably represent the most detailed description of each book.

Also, I was just being facetious: EP surely has a more elaborate product archive and sales metrics database, but it amused me to imagine that they might give up their "spreadsheet" for a newsgroup's research.

Though in all fairness to EP, being a 40 year customer they always go back and tell me what something cost me 25 years ago, as I continue to sell on eBay.

>15 astropi: I did think of emailing them about a few things, but I doubt if they would want to be bothered with a long list such as that. They may consider it all proprietary at this point. I think most of them are within a month give or take as it is anyways. I would love to have the actual day of announcement, but this will have to do.

19Wootle
Edited: Oct 18, 2017, 9:00 pm

At this point if anyone has anything to add or have taken off the list, please leave a reply or PM me. I still have a short list of adds for the next day or two.

Yet to be added:

Also, what does everyone think of the signed illustrated editions being mixed in? Do they need their own post, or even their own thread? They are DLE so will stay in the list, but thought they may be easier to find off by themselves somewhere.

I have been searching the WayBackMachine for those middle of the list books that EP erased from the site after selling out. I have found pages for most of them, but they do not include the pics, so I have not updated those links yet, waiting to see if I can find a page with all the information instead of partials.

Thank you so much for the list Wootle!

Two that I know of are The Call of the Wild by Jack London which I believe was considered a DLE and there was a DLE for "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings".

I've read some of the threads here, but want to be accurate before inserting them on two different lines. If you have the release date of the second one that would also be helpful. While it might be nice to have them separated, EP has not been consistent with their labels. For example, Kafka's "Metamorphosis" and "Island" clearly belong to the Illustrated group, but the Web description simply calls them Limited.

26Wootle

>24 Wootle: only one Count of Monte Cristo set. https://www.eastonpress.com/prod/6FD/2787/THE-COUNT-OF-MONTE-CRISTO?cm_st=2&...

The confusion occurred because they printed half and waited to see what demand was. It was indeed OOP for a short period of time. I bought an aftermarket set at a slight markup only to find that EP printed the remaining 400. The footnote on the 1887 and 1888 set is due to me complaining to the VP of EP to clarify the printing. They need to place a mention on their website when a set is out of stock and when it will be reprinted, so that collectors do not mustakingly purchase from the aftermarket.

By the way only 87 left, for real this time.

"We initially intended to make 800, but eventually limited production to 400 copies only. The colophon page incorrectly says "limited to 800". We apologize for the error, but the book is and will remain limited to 400 copies only."

I went back and added Les Miserables at #35. At the time of production, as a group we decided it shouldn't be on the list. Now I have no recollection of why that was. So it is tentatively there until someone can come up with a reason it should come off.

I remember a few limited editions that were never placed on the DLE page. The prices were lower than most DLEs, and there was a discussion at the time as to whether they might not have been sufficiently deluxe. We were wondering (tongue in cheek, I think) whether a new category might be needed - e.g., "semideluxe." I don't remember whether Les Mis was one of those sets, but I doubt it because of the relatively high price.

>33 Wootle: I was not part of Library Thing back then but Les Miserables from the 1888 Routledge Collection is one of the better deals and most fabulous of all EP DLEs. Though the original was really in 1887. EP chose to publish the second edition of 1888 with one significant missing drop case errors in one chapter as reported in earlier posts. Thankfully I found this gem at Strand book store in NYC in mint condition lower than the original selling price ($600)

At the time Atlas Shrugged was released, we as a group decided it wasn't Deluxe enough to be on the list. Since then, of course most of the DLE's aren't nearly as Deluxe as they started out being. So I plan on inserting Atlas Shrugged but have had a tough time finding a screen cap of the Easton page. I just recently found one and will be installing it in place in the next day or two.

>53 Wootle:, Yes, I have also significantly slowed on collecting the DLEs. In the beginning, some of them were phenominal. I am happy to say that I have many of the most desirable copies. But after a time, the prices seemed to increase and their "deluxe" nature seemed to decrease, at least as desirability to myself, I began to only collect those that had the most personal meaning to me. Granted, I still managed to collect just over 30 titles, and I still have several on my wish list, I don't try to get all those I may like to have. I would post more photos but photobucket's betrayal has also impacted that option. ☺

Like both of you, I have 25 or 30 DLEs, mostly from the early years. I still buy one occasionally that holds a special interest for me, but I no longer expect them to match the quality of the early ones.

The ones I find most intriguing now are the Deluxe Illustrateds, but the cost/illustration ratio has become off-putting. The early ones were priced at $250-$300 and I purchased "Hound of the Baskervilles" and "Gilgamesh" in that range, but recent ones have been priced at $375-$400. Fortunately, most of the early ones are still available, and I might buy Poe one of these days.

56hamletscamaro
Dec 5, 2017, 11:00 pm

>55 jroger1:, I agree with you on the Deluxe Illustrated. Baskerville is still one of my favorites. There was a great controversy on the print placement, but I really liked it. War of the Worlds was fun to read again. Both had great illustrations. Poe is also good, as was Christmas Carol. I still hope to get Tristan and Isolde, and Dr. Jeckle, but the prices have slowed my commitment. Neither was included in the sale, so I wound up ordering a few more minor titles.

Perhaps it would be useful to do this now that they comprise a fairly large subset of the DLEs. I'm not sure whether Tarzan represents the first member of the subset or not; it seems to meet all the criteria except that its limitation is 800 instead of 1200.

There are currently 64 DLEs available, whereas 4 months ago there were 72, and 13 of the 64 are on the Limited Quantities list. I’m not sure what it means, if anything.

77Wootle
Apr 24, 2018, 10:37 am

Only four releases so far this year. So we are due another announcement shortly. I believe they are deciding to "not print" part of the run on some titles due to lack of sales. I may be totally wrong, but some of the titles that are limited quantity haven't made sense. Example, Green Willow with 1200 copies and only printed 16 months ago, I don't think so, the run has been shortened. December 22nd, 83 copies avail, today 31 avail. Four months 50 copies have sold, meaning over 1100 copies sold the first 12 months, not likely.

This is a smart move for then in actuality. If a product isn't selling, discontinue production. If for some reason it becomes "hot" at some future point, they can always print the remaining copies.

There was a complaint about the quality of the illustrations (too dark and muddied so details visible in the illustrations online are lost). How do others see this?

Any help would be appreciated. I find the book appealing, but it is expensive and a hassle to get internationally, so I'd like to get some feedback before I decide about a purchase.

Edited: Dec 15, 2021, 3:30 pm

>124 SF-72:
While it is true that there is some loss of detail from the web page illustrations to the book, I do not find it disconcertingly so. The problem, I think, is that most of the illustrations are night or sunset scenes, but even so, except in one or two instances, the faces are sufficiently illuminated by the moon or other light that the detail is clear enough for my taste.

The translation is a modern one from a Penguin edition, but reads like a very literal one. While I don’t have another translation to compare it with, I find some of the language peculiar: “you shouldn’t heed what messengers say when they’ve a feed of your meat and drink in them.” This seems like a strange way of expressing the idea (or maybe it’s just because I’m American). On the positive side, the translator has provided a lot of helpful notes regarding historical/mythological places, individuals, and events.

Overall, I like the book and consider it to be a worthy addition to the signed-by-the-illustrator series.

I’ll post this same message in the Tain Bo Cuailnge thread where it really belongs.

Instead of new ones they are recycling the old ones that didn’t sell their full limitations. And raising the prices from the original offerings, sometimes substantially.

That is true. My experience is mostly with DLEs that are being re-released in order to complete their limitation. Others have noted that new publications seem to cost more than similar ones from a few years ago, but comparisons are hard to make objectively.

Adjusting prices for inflation is a necessary business practice as long as it doesn’t cause customers to purchase fewer books.

I know that nobody can know for sure with Easton Press, but you might have an idea and it can't hurt to ask. How would people here estimate the likelihood of Jason and the Argonauts coming back into stock? I originally didn't buy it since I already had an older EP edition, but in the meantime I've got five books from the series of older texts in these Deluxe Editions (I started with Gilgamesh and recently got The Kalevala) and would like to complete the set.
