With great pleasure I am kicking off the 2017 SantaThing Donation Thread!
We have some rules this year for the donation thread!
After some thought about the concerns raised around donations last year, we've decided to adjust our policy regarding SantaThing donations. Members will be eligible for SantaThing donations if they meet the following two criteria:

- They must have been a member for at least two months (so, their account must have been created no later than September 15, 2017).
- They must have at least 50 books cataloged in their account.*

*Suggestions! If you are in a rut with this one and unsure how to get your book amount up try this! Add books to your wishlist or books you have read but do not own. As long as the overall count is over 50 then you are good to go!

The former is not easy to get around, but it is fairly easy to add more books to one's account if you're not quite at the 50 book threshold yet. Should someone in this situation request a donation, either Mellymel171328 or lorannen will contact them directly to encourage them to beef up their catalog first.

I'm sorry that it's come to this, but we had to draw the line somewhere. Donating members have expressed valid concerns over the years about donations going to accounts that are essentially empty, which additionally makes the recipient very difficult to pick gifts for. I welcome feedback about this shift in policy.

Please feel free to ask if you are in need of a donation! If you want to become a secret santa and give an anonymous donation please feel free to message me directly. :)

I'm here again in hopes of getting a donation for my little man, Rylan. He is 6 years old and has Autism, ADHD, and anxiety. The kid never stops moving until it comes to animals (unless of course he is being an animal). He loves books about wild animals from all over the world. Storybooks, nonfiction books, plain picture books, it doesn't matter much. And his brain is a sponge, he knows more things then I even knew was possible.
I would love if he could have some "new" books to obsess over... Thank you...

Hi. I'm hoping to get a donation for myself (Finnyb) and one for my husband (Gavic-D-Star), if possible. (He does have a library thing account, but I'm trying to surprise him.) We've had a heck of a year with massive health issues with the in-laws, and I'm hoping to get some cheer into the season, as all our holiday money is going to stuff to make the in-laws lives easier.

I am in need of a donation if anyone can spare it. I have wanted to do this for awhile but I unexpectedly had to quit work when I found out I had Avascular Necrosis and needed both hips replaced in April at only 25 years old. I had one hip replaced in June and the next is being replaced on December 14th and this is just what I need to really raise my spirit and get through this recovery. I hate asking for more help as so many amazing people have already helped me so much, but this would really be amazing and I can't wait to pay it forward next year.

You're amazing for running this.

Well, LibraryThing is at the top of my thankful list - it's been just wonderful since I joined in 2016.
I'd like to ask for a donation for my parish library (Mary Our Queen Catholic Church).
I'm a high-school senior who took charge of my parish library last year and am hoping to make it grow. We're a small parish and the library can't be alotted part of the budget till the library really starts getting used.

Nov 26, 2017, 3:45pm Top

>57 MOQLibrary: That is very honorable of you. I'll put you on the list. :)

Edited: Nov 26, 2017, 3:46pm Top

>57 MOQLibrary: I was going to message you directly, but your profile won't let me. Do you need a donation for yourself? I wouldn't want you to miss out too. :)

Nov 26, 2017, 3:56pm Top

May I please have a donation this year? I'm not able to get out much and reading keeps me sane.

Nov 26, 2017, 3:58pm Top

>60 Neverwithoutabook: I know how you feel! I am a stay at home mom and I spend a lot of time alone. (Yes, I have the kiddos but I miss sane adult conversations! lol) Adding you to the list. :)

Edited: Nov 26, 2017, 6:44pm Top

I was a recipient of a donation last year and it felt so wonderful that someone was willing to do that! I was hoping to be in a position to make a donation for someone this year (in addition to doing one for myself again), but that isn't the case.

I am debating about paying for my own this year, or just sitting aside and maybe making some suggestions to help others.

Nov 26, 2017, 6:47pm Top

>62 LibraryCin: Do what you can do! If you can only afford you then that is great. I understand how hard it is lately. If you find yourself in a position where you can't afford it then please feel free to ask. We are here so everyone can be able to join in on the fun. Just let me know. :)

Nov 29, 2017, 4:11pm Top

Oh you are so kind! I'd be thrilled to get a donation for myself, not just the parish library, if that's allowed. My absolute favorite genre is historical fiction - but I'll try anything that's not science fiction. :)

Nov 29, 2017, 4:14pm Top

>70 MOQLibrary: do you have a personal librarything ? :) SO I can put you on the list.

Nov 29, 2017, 4:41pm Top

No, I had an account called "ColetteTest" but I deleted that. I haven't had time yet to organize my own books with LibraryThing. :) So if a personal account is required, then don't worry about it. It's more than enough to get donations for the parish - and I'll use those myself anyway.

How do I make a donation? Do I have to specify a person?

Dec 3, 2017, 12:08pm Top

>88 bcrowl399: Nope! mellymel171328 will handle that part. Here's all you need to do:

- Go to the SantaThing page and click the link that reads "Become a Secret Santa"
- This will take you to the sign-up page. Rather than selecting a store and completing the web form there, go ahead and click on the PayPal button that corresponds to the amount you'd like to donate.
- That will take you to PayPal, where you submit your payment.
- Once you've completed your payment, copy your receipt or transaction ID, and send it to mellymel171328 via profile comment, along with the amount you selected (she can't see our PayPal records, so this is just to help her keep track of amounts).

From there, she'll take care of matching your donation with an LT member who's requested one! Let us know if you have any other questions!

May I possibly be added to the Santa Things donations list? I hope not to be a burden. But honestly the past 2 years have been rough and the loss of several family members makes the tides turn in my heart. I need something to quiet my mind and tame my soul, i'd like to thrust myself into the reading world, as I write. It would also help spark my muse and awaken my creativity. My mother is an avid reader and id like to get into reading myself. A good book to get into would be great. I love vampires, romance, supernatural stuff, angels, i like stuff with depth. Etc. I promise I would be ETERNALLY grateful and humbled if I can be included in this. We all need something to look forward to, to brighten this bleakness. Thank you, so very much again for your time and consideration.
