I have noticed that my tags that I added over a month ago have not been updated into the general tag section. How long should this take?

2lorax

Can you explain what you mean by the "general tag section"?

3bergs47
Dec 1, 2017, 4:36pm Top

Ok I added my tags to many books and in the Book tag section I cannot see my tags.

These are my tags: London, Dysfunctional families, Anecdotal, Divorce, English Family Fiction, 2017 (edit) for Transit by Rachel Cusk.
As you can see they most don't appear in the Book tags

Does every tag applied to a work eventually appear here or do they need to reach a critical number of uses before they make the list?

Transit is the correct touchstone.

Opps Transit . forgot to use the correct touchstone.

Maybe your collection was set to "my library" 588 books, but to see all your tags it should be set to "all collections" 2055 books? I see them all in "all collections."

Wait. I'm confused. Are you looking at the work page where there is a tag block or are you looking at your library catalog, tag page? Or are you looking at the book details section where your entered tags should appear?

If looking at the work page, did you click on "Show All" to see all tags associated with that book? (With the touchstone example, 262 people own that book. Without show all, not all tags show.)

I'm looking at the work page where there is a tag block> I know exactly how this works. All I am saying is that my Tags take at least month to update.

These are all the tags for Transit:

$19.10 (Processed for Ordering by MH on 1/23/17) 2010s 3 2016 2017 21st century 21st century literature Acquired in 2017 Anglo-Canadian Writers art B&T January 2017 B&T March 2017 book 2 in a trilogy Books Read 2017 borrowed Britain British author British fiction British literature Canadian canadian author children contemporary literature digital divorce dl England English English literature English teachers family fate FIC Cus fiction fiction17 First Edition first printing freedom Gender: female Giller Shortlist goodreads hardcover houses Import Unfiled library library book literary fiction literature London mature MPS January 2017 Nationality: Canadian neighbors New York Times novel NRC 9/12/16 oct16 part-read 2017 personal Published in 2010s Q1 17 R2017 read read in 2017 recommended relationships Romane & Erzählungen sequel to Outline signed signed by author tbr-one-of-these-days to-read trilogy UK unabridged USA W02 women women authors writing x2 xxx

These are my tags for Transit

As you can see a number of my tags do not appear

All I am asking is how long does it take?

Okay, now I wonder if Show All actually does Show All.

>10 gilroy:

I think it's an updating issue. I have a tag that I use for books my book club reads. I am the only one who uses it. For books that I added up to and including June of this year, the tag shows. I didn't add any more until last month, and those don't show the tag.

Another book that I added in September of this year is also missing a tag, but a book added in late August which no one else owns has the tags.

A book I added Sept 30, 2017 shows up with tgs, but the next one I added on Nov 9 does not. About 3 years ago, I noticed someting like a 3-4 month lag on tags. I wonder if the LT program to update tgs with the newest combination and separation proposals takes a lot of resources to run and so is done infrequently.

Everybody talking about this had me go and look at tags I have updated in the last few weeks or saw including one from yesterday and they updated with no issues. See Trolleys, Chester County and Philadelphia as examples over the last 2 days. Short answer. . . mine are updating OK and in a timely manner.

>13 ulmannc:

I think you misunderstand the issue. Your tags show in the Book Information box of the Work page, but not in the general tag box.

So you tagged Western Connecticut trolleys with "Trolleys", but the only tag in the tag box is "NRHS".

>14 lilithcat: You are right. I never use that page for anything so I never look at it. For the way I handle my library, I must have decided (a long time ago!) that it was one less thing I needed to use.

I believe that the tag block on the work page is only regenerated periodically since it takes too much effort to generate it each time someone looks at the page. I also believe that I've read that books that are in a large number of libraries take longer to update.

The tag issue has reared its ugly head again. Tags entered for my books in February are still not appearing. Girl from Berlin.

Yes, for me to. But it doesn't seem systematic. For a number of books/tags added around the same time, for some books tags show on 'show all tags' and for others not.

Years ago something similar was closed as "not a bug", being dismissed as "A matter of how often tags get regenerated for work pages":

Let me give an example

https://www.librarything.com/work/21996558 has 36 members and no tags. Are you telling me that not one one these has ever tagged this book

24jjwilson61
Mar 12, 12:11pm Top

>23 bergs47: Quite possibly. I don't know what percentage of users tag their books, but a quick check of WorldCat shows that book was only published in 2018 which for all we know could be the end of 2018. So if it takes several months for tags to show up on Work pages then it is quite possible that any tags that may have been entered just haven't shown up yet.

>23 bergs47: Are you telling me that not one one these has ever tagged this book
>24 jjwilson61: Quite possibly

First copy I checked was cataloged by user doryfish with tags "2015-present, historical-fiction, library-books"; finished reading 7 Nov 2018 so presumably the tags were added around then.

badube has tags "to-read, favorite-authors"

Owain has tags "fml, ebook, didnotfinish"

mariajones1229, ALHS_Library, and Marysville_Library have no tags

Smiler69 has "Audiobook, Narrated by Cassandra Campbell, Library Book (National), OverDrive, Acquired in 2019"

Thanks for bringing this up! I've got tag updating on Tim's radar, and that should be running soon.

>22 lorax: is correct, though. It's not a bug, per se, but a manual process that we have to run periodically. I've set myself a calendar reminder so I can check on that more frequently.

bergs47 (#28):

noted i will report back in a week or so

Given that the expected refresh timescale is several months, a week is probably too soon. Maybe give it another month?

30bergs47
Mar 15, 4:56am Top

For 10 years this has worked fairly effectively so why do we have to "wait several months"

31lorax
Mar 15, 8:59am Top

I'd agree with you if it had worked fairly effectively, but I reported a similar bug back in 2013 and was told that it was just how things worked.

>36 bergs47: As mentioned previously, this is not a bug, and, unfortunately, not something we can simply set to run on a regular schedule and leave it to do its work. It's something Tim has to do manually. I'll let him know that you're waiting on the latest update.

39lorannen
Yesterday, 1:57pm Top

>38 bergs47: Thanks for confirming! We're working at getting this done more regularly, but it's a multi-day process, based on the sheer volume of data that has to go through. So, basically, we'd have to be running it constantly in order to get all tags guaranteed to update on a monthly basis. Thanks again for your patience!

Edited: Yesterday, 3:28pm Top

>39 lorannen: Question: would it be possible to have a 'recalculate tags' option on the work page, similar to recalculate authors, covers and editions? I mean is it technically a viable option and thus worth an RSI
