Girl with tall silver dog

Hi everyone, first time here and hoping someone knows what I'm talking about.
I'm looking for a book I read as a kid in the 90's, although it could have been written in the 80's. I don't think it was older than that. I don't believe it was a children's book, I usually read my mom's books. I remember it was a paperback, but don't recall anything about the cover.
The part of the story that stuck with me describes the girl and the large, silver hound that was her pet/companion. I believe both the girl and dog had silver hair. I wanted to know what type of dog it was when I read it because I wanted one. After asking a lot of the adults I knew questions about the dog's description and doing research on dog types (library visit!! no internet!!) I believe it was an Irish Wolfhound or Norwegian Elkhound.
Unfortunately, I cannot recall anything else about the book, and would love to read it again. I know I enjoyed it the first time.
Thanks for any help!!
Perhaps Deerskin by Robin Mckinley? Except it has a pretty dark beginning. The dog is never described as more than a fleethound, though, and the girl's hair turns silver after she is molested. :( it's actually one of my favourite novels, it is a little fairy-tale-sequel, but it definitely deals with some darker issues.
Deerskin is definitely a good bet!
Another one I can think of that's a little less likely are the Sally Lockhart books starting with The Ruby in the Smoke by Philip Pullman. Sally has a big Irish Wolfhound-type dog as a companion.
There's an Irish Wolfhound who makes an appearance in The New Policeman, but not really as a companion to a specific girl, and I think that book is newer.
And here's a list I found - not sure if it will be helpful, but you never know! http://www.iwane.org/iw_booklist.htm
