Jan 31, 2008, 4:25pm (top)Message 1: JodyreadseverythingWe thought in another thread that it might be fun to play a Stephen King game and give clues to guess the character, story or book. First person to guess correctly gets to pick the next character and set the clues. Since it was me who suggested it I've been given the job of starting things off and will start with an easy one. Clue: I live with my mother in Derry and have a great sense of direction. Feb 1, 2008, 7:54am (top)Message 2: TheBentleyWould that be Duddits in Dreamcatcher? I'm reaching--I didn't keep that book and haven't read it since it first came out. :-| Feb 1, 2008, 12:48pm (top)Message 3: JodyreadseverythingNo, not Duddits and not Dreamcatcher. I'll give another clue. Clue: I grew up to drive a limo. OH crap! It's one of the guys from IT. Can't remember the name Message edited by its author, Feb 1, 2008, 2:08pm. Feb 1, 2008, 4:07pm (top)Message 5: BookmarqueThat would be Eddie Kaspbrak. And what a mother she was! Feb 1, 2008, 7:05pm (top)Message 6: JodyreadseverythingIt was Eddie, well done. So, your turn to post a question. bravo Feb 2, 2008, 8:17am (top)Message 8: Bookmarque{gazes at SK shelves and ponders} Must have coffee first. Good luck. I tried to make it "win-able" but not too easy! "Yes. Oh yes. And your soul as well. But you'll have your pride. That'll be left to you, at least. And isn't a woman entitled to her pride? When everything else is gone--heart, soul, even the man you love--you'll have that...won't you? You'll have that one coin without which your purse would be empty. Let it be your dark and bitter comfort for the rest of your life. Let it serve. It must serve, because if you keep on the way you're going, there surely won't be no other." CandiBelle is thinking along the right lines in saying it's something going on in a character's mind. I didn't add the italics--they're original. She's also thinking along the right lines that it's not one of the "women's books," although I know it sounds a lot like one. Jul 19, 2008, 10:52am (top)Message 42: JodyreadseverythingWell, to give a clue, it isn't exactly a showdown because it isn't the main enemy (not quite the right word but I don't know what else to call it) and it doesn't happen at the end of the book. Jul 26, 2008, 10:36am (top)Message 85: TheBentleyThe Stand? I don't think it's necessarily a character who's come unhinged, exactly. I think it's referring to some kind of power--psychic power maybe--like the ability to call people to you? That's exactly the kind of metaphor King's characters use to talk about that stuff. I would almost think it's the Crimson King, but you said you hadn't read the Dark Tower books... Jul 26, 2008, 12:13pm (top)Message 86: CandiBelleSorry Madcow its not Roadwork, which I am still puzzled by. I just canyt wrap my head around it. The story is so random. And TheBentley, its not The Stand. Thank you for recognizing that the Dark Tower books will be instantly omitted from this clue. I just cant put myself to read them until I have them all in my possession. Freakish mindset, maybe. But I just want them all right next to me. Jul 31, 2008, 4:22pm (top)Message 109: jseger9000#107 - Booksloth, Hey, I doubt I'm right. I haven't been yet. But anyway, the clue was: "Maybe he could only manage one lonely trombone then, but he's got the whole band playing now doesn't he?" To me that implies something that starts out weak and is growing stonger. In The Dark Half George Stark arrives (I'm trying to be vague on the off chance it may be a spoiler for someone) as a 'High Tone Son of a Bitch' right from the get-go. He doesn't really gain strength through the novel, does he? Maybe I'm not remembering right though... Message edited by its author, Jul 31, 2008, 4:23pm. Also, if it is too vague, lemmee know and I will provide clues. (One clue: This quote isn't as vague or random as it may appear.) Here goes: "'Course you can't!" he snapped. Aug 2, 2008, 10:23am (top)Message 121: BookslothIt's in Skeleton Crew (I'm 99% sure - my son seems to have pinched my copy at the moment) and I guess you have to have a very dark sense of humour to find it funny, though I do like to think King was crouched over his word-processor going 'Heh-Heh-Heh!' in manic fashion while he was writing it. Actually, I often feel that way about King. People rarely seem to mention him in connection with humour - or am I the only person who's that weird? Message edited by its author, Aug 2, 2008, 10:23am. Aug 2, 2008, 11:19am (top)Message 122: TheBentleyI always feel that way about Needful Things. When you read it, you can tell he had so much fun killing off Castle Rock... Aug 2, 2008, 11:35am (top)Message 123: jseger9000Madcow, Yeah, you do need to read more of King's short stories. I'd suggest starting with Skeleton Crew. That's where all the stories we've been talking about (Uncle Otto's Truck, The Jaunt, Survivor Type) come from. Plus you get The Mist. What's not to love? Aug 2, 2008, 12:02pm (top)Message 124: Madcow299I have the mist as a seperate novella. I have read Everything's Eventual, and Four Past midnight, but those were both year's ago. I have been reading a more varied authorship and have stuck to his novels and of course the DT series. Aug 3, 2008, 12:16am (top)Message 125: beegCats are different, though. LT lesson for the day. I'll try and guess when I get home. My problem is off the top of my head the only SK stories I can remember that were first person are Jerusalem's Lot (where the modern style of the quote doesn't fit) or Rage. Oh wait! ETA - Any chance of a clue here? Message edited by its author, Aug 8, 2008, 8:14am. Aug 8, 2008, 2:45pm (top)Message 166: CandiBelleSo far no one has guessed correctly and i think its the first person narrative giving it a bad name. "But he was lying about something. It was in his eyes...oh shit, it was all over his face, almost as if he wanted me to see the lie...see it and put a stop to it...because part of him was scared...so scared." here's the hint... the person speaking IS NOT the main character, they are in fact speaking OF the main character. Aug 8, 2008, 4:36pm (top)Message 167: BookslothI'd already worked that out but it didn't help. Does that mean I get another clue? Aug 9, 2008, 10:08am (top)Message 168: TheBentleyHere's what I'm thinking: The book isn't actually in first person, is it? You didn't add the italics. They were in the original text? And those thoughts as complete sentences aren't common in King. In fact, off the top of my head, I can only think of one book where the characters "think" in complete sentences like that, but I'm sure there are others. Is it The Dark Half? Maybe Alan Pangborn or maybe Liz talking about Thad... Aug 9, 2008, 10:42am (top)Message 169: BookslothIs it a Dark Tower book? Aug 9, 2008, 12:34pm (top)Message 170: CandiBelleI did add the italics. The quote is straight from the text as you see it. It is not from The Dark Half or the Dark Tower books. It would be easier to guess if you look at the content as a whole instead of picking it apart. My guess is The Body from Different Seasons. (and I can't tell you where, it just sounds like it.) Aug 22, 2008, 1:04pm (top)Message 235: jseger9000I was gonna guess The Body myself, but thought it didn't sound like a quote from a kid. If you get it right I'm gonna feel so dumb! Message edited by its author, Aug 22, 2008, 1:04pm. Aug 22, 2008, 1:18pm (top)Message 236: ealaindraoiAh, but The Body is actually from an adult looking back on being a kid. It's got that memorable line (paraphasing here) about never having friends like he did when he was 13. Kids don't talk about how great their friends are either. ;) Aug 22, 2008, 2:44pm (top)Message 237: angelikatThat kind of sounds like Salem's Lot, when Ben is reminiscing about his childhood in the Lot. Aug 22, 2008, 2:47pm (top)Message 238: BookslothNo luck so far - sorry guys! Aug 22, 2008, 3:04pm (top)Message 239: ealaindraoiRita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redepemption - when they're tarring the roof and drinking beers. Aug 22, 2008, 3:58pm (top)Message 240: beckylynnI'm goin with ealaindraio, I think it's from when they were talking about the brick wall with the box in it... But I'll make my own guess.......The Secret Window Aug 22, 2008, 4:31pm (top)Message 241: BookslothGreat guesses, but still no! The object on it had been draped with a piece of cloth, as a sculptor might cover his work in progress. Aug 23, 2008, 10:58am (top)Message 246: beegbtw this thread is even longer than the last one Aug 23, 2008, 11:02am (top)Message 247: JodyreadseverythingI know that I know this but I can't think what it is. Aug 23, 2008, 12:29pm (top)Message 254: StefanYre to #246 Maybe someone should just start a monthly or bi-monthly quote guessing game thread. Message edited by its author, Aug 23, 2008, 12:30pm. I started a new topic for the rest of August - maybe whoever wins in early September can start one for that month.
