Searching for a 1980’s-1990’s historical romance

I am looking for the first romance novel I ever read. I read the book in 1995 so it would have been published in the mid-late 1980’s to early to mid 1990’s. The cover was a typical romance paperback with a woman lying in a man’s arms.
The book is about a half breed (Native American) who saves and falls in love with a white woman.
The book starts with a woman (I believe her name is Penny, but I’m not positive) who is traveling in a carriage with others when they are in an accident (I’m not sure if they are robbed or not). She is pulled out by a half Native American, half white man named Hawk (I think that is his last name, but that’s what he is called in the book - it is remotely possible that this name is actually wolf, but I’m pretty sure it’s hawk).
Anyway it is definitely frontier America in the 1800’s and I’m pretty sure they are in the south. Throughout the book he helps her through several situations - she is kidnapped and left at a brothel, she develops a fever while traveling with him and he takes care of her.
I have been looking for this book for close to 10 years, I have read posts on here many times over the years and have no idea why I waited until now to post. I hope someone can help me find the book. I would love to reread it.
Thanks in advance!
Only Mine by Elizabeth Lowell has a half-English, Half- native american hero named Wolfe but I'm not sure it entirely matches your plot. Still, she might be an author to check if this one isn't the right fit.
I’m looking into this, but I don’t think it’s the right one. I’m looking at her other stuff too. Do you think the one you mentioned is worth reading? I’ve been on leave from work and looking for good suggestions. Thanks again!
