I read a book in maybe 1986 about a herd of horses or horse type creatures.
Fictional ya/children horses/unicorns/pegasus the main character was a foal that got separated from the herd and went on an adventure.
There was a prophesy about a savior as at the end of the book you realize it's him.
Something about a scar on either his ankle or forehead, something about poison and scorpion like creatures.
His coat changed color and his scar was still white.

Fire Bringer by David Clement-Davies? That's from 1999, too late?

No, I think this is Birth of the Firebringer (1985) by Meredith Ann Pierce.

In the climax, the unicorn hero is stung by a poisonous wyvern and the mark leaves a scar like a star of white hair on his heel, and is branded by fire on his forehead, leaving a mark like a crescent. Both marks match scenes in the unicorn prophecy, and as the book closes the hero realizes he's shedding out his brown winter coat and the new coat is coming in black.

(This was the first book in a trilogy.)
