Ok, I know this a long shot, but in the 90s I found a fantasy book in a bargain bin (so no idea if it was published before the 90s or not). I think the author's first name was Michael, but I'm not 100% sure of that.

What I do remember is a man had his cloak edged with a blade and could fight with it. He was a villain, an assassin. He was hired to kill the hero. The hero was travelling with a woman who I believe had silver hair; she was the mortal daughter of a god, created just days before so she could assist the hero. The villain became obsessed with her. He pulled out a knife to kill her, but she sighed and leaned into the knife before he could stab her, essentially killing herself. He wound up fleeing, horrified by the fact that she wanted to die and what that could mean. The woman herself had a sweet disposition. I believe this is one book in a series.

I know it's not a lot to go on, but hopefully it rings a bell. Thank you for your time!

MissSquish, thank you so much! I think one of those books is the right one, I just ordered them so I'm not positive, but it's ringing a lot of bells!
