This was a YA novel written in the 90s or possibly the late 80s. It was American and set in a large city. The female teen was dealing with her growing sexuality. She finds a diary her mother kept when her mother was a teen and the POV switched between the female teen and her mother's diary.

It ends up being revealed in the diary that the mother had an abortion as a teen. This is contrasted with the female teen either having a pregnancy scare, or an abortion of her own, or possibly helping a friend who becomes pregnant.

I remember very keenly the mother's diary, and the setting being the urban centre of a large city.
