New LT Local Entries Don't Appear on Browsable Map

Thought this would be fixed by API update, but no. Check my entries in Pennsylvania on June 2. Each one shows up on a map on its own page, but if you go to the browsable map and look for pins, you won't find them. This has been going on for a long time, too.

I'm seeing items on that map now but it's possible that I fixed it last week when fixing another problem with our geocoder (mostly that it wasn't working at all due to changes in multiple APIs).

I'm seeing them all in my browser.
Now, some of them (like the first one, Cal U Student Bookstore) only show two or three in the initial view because the others are far enough away in the map that it needs to be zoomed out before more start showing up.
But all of them are in the map view for me.

You're not getting ANY markers on the map?

And ultimately, it might be worthwhile trying to figure out exactly how long this has been going on and how many hundreds or thousands of the most recent entries are not showing up on the map or distance search, and what can be done to get them added.properly.

It's certainly possible. The most recent entries might not have gotten geocoding IDs when our geocoder was broken. I'll run through the locations in the database and give them new geoIDs. It'll take a while because I have to do them slowly so we don't overrun our API limit.

There are also problems with the Swiss libraries and booksellers I entered in May and June (I guess). Wetzikon (https://www.librarything.de/venue/113173/Bibliothek-Wetzikon and 1 more), Rapperswil, Turgi (https://www.librarything.de/venue/113164/Gemeinde-und-Schulbibliothek-Turgi), Gossau (https://www.librarything.de/venue/113215/Stadtbibliothek-Gossau and 2 more) and some others. I hope you may do these as well.

oh and some of these places don't even show on the map, the map shows China oder New York and other useless things

There were about 2,000 geocodes in the database that were connected to venues but didn't have lat/long coordinates, meaning that they were really invalid geocodes. I've processed all of those and we're down to only a few venues that don't have valid locations now. BTW, that 2,000 is pretty decent error rate considering we have about 1.2 MILLION geocodes in our database now.

I'll see if I can get a good list of unaddressed or misaddressed venues. There really aren't many and somebody might want a fun project finding addresses for them.

Please let me know of there are any missing venues now. I've checked most of the ones above and they are all showing up now.

Not counting online venues and such we only have 86 ungeocoded venues. That's absolutely remarkable. I'll drop them in here in case anybody wants to take a stab at any of them.

There is still a problem with https://www.librarything.com/venue/112120/Hepburn-Libraries-Trentham-Library where the map shown on the right when you do a search is incorrect (it seems to be inheriting the geo code for the venue that I cloned to create it) and doesn’t match the map immediately to the right of the address when editing the venue. Reediting the venue doesn't seem to fix it.

I tried to fix 85. It shows up in the address preview but not in the displayed venue. It just has a world map and a googlo login icon.

ETA: And oh, yeah: the filtering by venue type still isn't working on the main map. Think we've got another bug open for that already from...well, years back. But probably worth mentioning.
(It does seem to work on the local venues list at left for searches -- and by the way, I think the "all | most | edit" options could be improved there. If not a re-think, then maybe an all | filtered | gear symbol) ?.

The maps on the right of venue pages use the address information directly. They don't use our geocoded lat/long coordinates like all the other maps use to place dots. I don't even remember why it was done that way in the first place but it should be changed so that the venue maps use our normal geocodes. Either way, don't get too caught up on those if they don't match 100%. As long as the dots appear in the correct places on the city-wide and local-wide maps.

As for dupes in that list: yep, could be. That was basically a database dump of venues that didn't have geocodes on them.

This is some seriously fast and good work by all of you. Kudos!

That's another case where it geocoded correctly (it's on the local map if you click the city link within the address on the venue page) but the address isn't getting read correctly by the vanilla Google Map on the right. That's next on my list of "if I can find the time I'd like to replace that." Probably won't happen right now though as I'm 100% saturated with LT2 redesign work.

I removed those last 3 because they were all too general to be actual venues. No location attached. If they'd even given some basic context in a description it would have helped. But they had nothing. So they were removed.

I often do not get results when searching for a place in 'Find venues': Gossau or Valendas for example, even though I put in venues from these places. I then use the 'search site' feature and find my entries under LT Local ... Is there anything you can do to change that? Or is that design?

The Find venues search on Local indicates that you should enter an address or postal code (when searching by location, rather than venue name). A search for "gossau" doesn't get me much in the way of results, but a more specific search for "gossau, switzerland" looks a whole lot better: https://www.librarything.com/local/place/gossau%2C+switzerland. I think it's a matter of needing to be a bit more specific with your searches.

Yes. And the site-wide search isn't searching any sort of geographic area (as far as I remember). It's just searching venue names and addresses. Which is why there's a difference.
