Group:  List Five Books Parlour Game ignore
Topic:  Starts with A, but not just A 0 / 29 read

Titles of which the first words starts with A, but A alone is off limits. A Purple Place for Dying would be against the rule, that is. Oh, and you have to like the book.

Absalom, Absalom Faulkner
All the King's Men Warren
After Theory Eagleton
Alone With America Richard Howard
Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned Walter Mosley

Mar 18, 2008, 8:47am (top)Message 2: thorold

Aspects of the novel by E.M. Forster (so much for Mr Eagleton!)
Accordion Crimes by Annie Proulx
Astérix le Gaulois by Goscinny and Uderzo
Art and illusion by Ernst Gombrich
Austerlitz by W.G. Sebald

...this is too easy; all you have to do is list your catalogue in alphabetical order of title, which in my case brings up about 120 books starting with "A", most of which I don't actively dislike. I think we need another constraint. What about requiring that the title also contains alliteration on "A"?

Adam, one afternoon by Italo Calvino
Author, author by David Lodge
Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas by Gertrude Stein
Adventures of Augie March by Saul Bellow
Alice's adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

I agree, way too easy. I have pages and pages of books starting with "A".

Hmm, can I do one word (not counting "A" and "The")?

Abbeys, by M.R. James
The Abyss, by Marguerite Yourcenar
The Adventuress, by Audrey Niffenegger
Animalia, by Graeme Base
Antipodes, by Maria-Antonia Oliver

Let me try alliterating:

The Advocate Adviser, by Pat Califia
Afternoon in the Attic, by John Kobler
Alligators All Around, by Maurice Sendak
Alphabets Animés, by Hugues Demeude
Angels in America. by Tony Kushner

How about A. . . a?

Anti-Oedipus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia by Gilles Deleuze
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
Antony and Cleopatra by William Shakespeare
Animalia by Graeme Base
Arcadia by Tom Stoppard

Edited to add that since I stole lilithcat's answer of Animalia, I'll add Audubon's Birds of America by John James Audubon(unfortunately, not the real thing--only the Baby Elephant Folio)

A bunch of mini-games!

I can't seem to come up with 5 in any of the mini-games, but maybe between them...

Aliteration:
Aztec Autumn by Gary Jennings

One Word:
Aztec by Gary Jennings
Anthem by Ayn Rand
Autobiography by John Stuart Mill

A...a:
Anarchy, State and Utopia by Robert Nozick

OK, I sorta cheated... but I got 5!

I have a lot more than just 5 that start with the letter A not counting those that start with 'a'.

Anna Banana suggests a new variant - titles with no vowels other than "A". It might be quite tricky...
