August Treasure Hunt: Maine

1kjgormley
Aug 18, 2020, 2:27 pm

Let's Celebrate Maine!

We've written 14 clues for you to solve around the theme of Maine, our home state which celebrates its 200th birthday this year. Read and solve each clue, then find the page on LibraryThing that matches your answer. When you find the right solution, you’ll see a banner at the top of your screen announcing that you’ve found a lobster. Remember: it's not necessarily a work page!

Go here for the hunt!

You have one week—until Tuesday, August 25th at 5pm EDT—to find as many lobsters as you can.

Use this thread to brag, ask for and give hints, etc.

As in past hunts, we'll be awarding profile badges to anyone who finds at least one lobster, and anyone who finds all 14 will be entered into a drawing for a LibraryThing coaster set and sticker. This is a change from our usual t-shirt prize, as shirt stock is difficult to access while the office is still closed for social distancing.

Important: When giving hints, please use the spoiler tag. To mark something as a spoiler, start your message like this:

<spoiler>

And end it like this:

</spoiler>

Troubleshooting

If you’re not seeing banners, or the hunt is otherwise not working for you, you may be using the old site design. Hunts don’t work on the old version of the site. You can switch to the new version by going here. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and look under "Design." You can always switch back after the treasure hunt, if you like.

Happy hunting!

P.S. Thanks to conceptDawg for the seagull illustration! He's made our treasure hunt graphics in the last couple years. We like them, and hope you do, too!

I saw the announcement, thought for a moment, and went to an author page without having looked at any clues - I was unsurprised to get a lobster. I wonder how many more I can get before peeking at the clues?

Only three, though I did guess another author that would be represented. I only checked the author page and one book, though, which wasn't the right title.

Aug 19, 2020, 12:46 am

I got them all, with a lot of googling - the only one I could answer without looking...well, OK, I got 1 and 6 instantly and knew who 9 was but couldn't remember the name. Remembered one book, though, and found it that way. And I know a song about 2 (or the original event, rather) but didn't know it was a real thing. Unfortunately the lyrics don't seem to be anywhere, phooey. I had some trouble with 13 - had to approach it several ways before the banner triggered. I'd been on the page that triggered several times already, no idea what the difference was.

I'm assuming it's the word "lobster" but there are a lot of entries for lobster, including several with just the single word lobster. Am I on the right track? How do I know which entry is the one I'm after? (I've tried many). Or am I completely off base? Help!

59stringcat3
Aug 19, 2020, 6:11 am

Well, that was over too fast. But an unexpected treat. #13 was the trickiest one, as I Googled for a work with the two terms suggested and it led me to a completely plausible but incorrect option. So I had to go back and do the LT tag search as directed in >51 MarthaJeanne: (the second spoiler). Bingo.

Great idea for a hunt! I’m from east coast of Canada, so Maine is the closest state to us, and we share the same industries - lobsters and potatoes.

79mnleona
Aug 19, 2020, 3:18 pm

I have been working on the Hunt and finally realized my problem. Now it is working for me.

That was lots of fun thank you. As an Australian I did not know much about Maine - I now know a lot more. I did waste some time on the really obvious ones looking for a book rather than a tag. I found the Wikipedea info on the Maine Sea Bugs really interesting. All 14 found, not in record time, but within about 24 hrs of starting. - am I getting better or are the quests easier?

155nadineeg
Aug 23, 2020, 11:25 am

As a hint to others, I often put a string of the words in the clues into google and see what somes up - add story if for children, novel if for adult, poetry if for well poetry. 14 look at the college staff, 8, what do storks bring?

156napaxton

6 and 12 are getting me. I know they're about lobsters and potatoes.

And on lobsters, I'm stuck getting beyond that.

If so, for # 6 think of the food made famous in Maine that lives in the ocean.
#8: Think of what the equivalent of a stork might be as a human. Someone who helps women give birth.
#14: You probably need to Google this. At least that is what I did. Google the college, English and dog.

My last one (after going through the hints, though I happily found more than I usually do without hints, even!) was 10. I had Linda Greenlaw figured out, but didn't get to the right page from there. Basically on trying again (after not having seen any hints here for it), I managed to find it.

This is the first treasure hunt where I've actually found all of the items before giving up. Sometimes the clues are too obscure or I just can't find the right page. This time I still needed some help from the "Talk" spoilers, but it was fun more than frustrating. Great job LT, as far as I'm concerned and I too love the seagull.......and Maine. How do you find or search tags? And what is tagmash?

175MarthaJeanne
Edited: Aug 24, 2020, 7:17 pm

>174 Shookie: (To mark what message you are answering, type > then the message number.)

To search for a tag, type it into the site search box. The list of works will come back, but on the left you will see a menu of possible searches. Choose tags, and you will get the list of tags that match your search. Dog leads you to https://www.librarything.com/tag/dog

If you want to see what books match two tags, type them with a comma in between. When you get to the tag results, at the top it will ask if you want a tagmash.

So search dog, brother and ask for tagmash, and you end up at https://www.librarything.com/tag/brother,+dog.

176Shookie
Aug 24, 2020, 7:35 pm

Ah, didn't know to begin with that some could be tags, not titles or authors. Then didn't know how to search for tags but finally figured it out! Now I will be smarter in the future! >202 ultrabookgeek: It's a broad range--some people use it sporadically, while some of us (ahem!) usually stop in a couple times a day to see what's up with friends in different groups. F'rex, the Green Dragon is a wonderful, friendly group if you're a fantasy/science fiction reader; a lot of members keep reading diaries there and discuss what they're reading (which can be dangerous to your book budget or library reserve queue.)

I wondered what happened to the lobsters? I wanted one to appear on my profile page along with my Rose from back in February.

This is the first treasure hunt that I noticed since February. I spotted this one on the banner. I think that is a good place to put it. It was really small on my computer screen and I don't know if that is a setting I control or LT controls. It wouldn't hurt to have it a little larger so it would be more noticeable. I read the newsletter every time it comes out, and I didn't see it in the newsletter. But then I am pretty good at filtering out things that I don't think I have time for. I managed to squeeze this treasure hunt in over the weekend. I agree with the person who said that we could have more of these. With so many of us at home, it would be something fun to do.
