I've just started reading this-I'm on chapter three and I flipped through the indexes and this book is amazing. I've already walked through my house to do a couple suggestions and I'm making a mental list of people who are recieving a copy of this book (my inlaws, parents, a few wanna-be-green folks, etc.). OK-back to reading...and turning off my computer. Gotta save that energy. :D

I just received Four Secrets to Liking Your work. It came in the regular mail in a cardboard envelope which had actually been opened by the time it got to my mailbox. I don't think anything was tampered with, though.

The book is immaculate. The envelope also contained a letter from the publisher, which was essentially just a description of the book and a short author bio.

>80 - Shortride: You need to amend your list, above. There are at least two Gefen titles which have been received by some Early Reivewers: Sephardi Entrepreneurs in Jerusalem and The Aaronsohn Saga; there may be others but these are the two I found thread on in the ER forum.

#84-Those books were both in the December batch. I think #80 was referring to the March batch.

Ah, you're probably right! Somehow I completely missed the fact that Gefen had offered books in March as well as those back in December. Sorry about that!

#151 - very discouraging, it's going on 4 weeks. If the publisher couldn't ship 'til April, the book should have been in the April batch.

Apr 13, 2008, 6:19pm (top)Message 154: xmaystarx

It is very weird that I am the only one who has received Spirit of the place. The P.S. written in the letter says "The author is also in MA" so maybe it was sent due to that? But I don't see why that would matter.

Edited to add: There is a review already up so I'm not the only one to have gotten it.

Hmmm...I was worried after I saw the first The Spirit of the Place arrival go up here and then mine never showed up, particularly after the review was posted. But it sounds like only two folks have gotten their books, so now I guess I'm just back to waiting. It's too bad, I recently flew cross-country and back twice, and I really wanted to take it with me. Oh well...

@ 158 - ireed110: no worries about posting arrivals, I think it's mostly a way of helping other members figure out when to expect books, not a "required" contribution. :)

I'm in NJ waiting for Spirit Of The Place. I know the USPS can be bad, but xmay said she got her copy Priority mail, so we should have all received ours by now.

I know the LT crew has no control over when books get sent, but it's a little depressing when you're waiting on a book from a month ago, and one of your friends have gotten their APRIL book already! :(

Apr 16, 2008, 11:14pm (top)Message 173: jhedlund

The three I nabbed that came already showed up while I was early in my previous book -- in one case, it missed by about a day. (To be fair, though, one of them did show up while I was away, and I don't always get to read as much on vacation.)

This applies to the following books:

and

The Spirit of the Place

So they're delayed, but still coming! Thanks for your patience.

I'm still waiting on Weaving a Way Home: A Personal Journey Exploring Place and Story by Leslie Van Gelder.

Since it's through University of Michigan Press and I live in Michigan, I guess the publisher is going down a list. I wonder if it is alphabetical (my last name begins with L). For those who have received it, does your last name begin with an early-alphabet letter?

Owning the Olympics 44 copies cataloged 16 member reviews (100 copies available)

Weaving a Way Home 31 copies cataloged 6 member reviews (100 copies available)

I also want to add that I haven't received This Gaming Life even though I've seen others have.

May 21, 2008, 11:06pm (top)Message 229: kawika

It seems that only a few people have received This Gaming Life. I'm not one of them. I've pretty much given up on getting it anytime soon and am beginning to believe that once I get it, I'll get to it whenever I can and put up a 25 word review to that effect so that I won't be penalized for future selections. After all, if U of Michigan can't put forth a decent effort, why should I?

I will get to the review eventually (assuming the book ever arrives), but I'm certainly feeling like I shouldn't be shackled or penalized for not reviewing a book that's now taken more than two months to arrive.

Oh! and This Gaming Life shows 6 reviews rather than 0.

ETA that last bit about # of reviews

Two months after snagging The Spirit Of The Place and seeing some others have gotten it, I'm starting to doubt I'll be seeing it anytime soon. While I know LT has no control over when books get sent out, I really have to wonder how hard it can be to send them all out at once, or at the very least over no more than a few days.

Considering all the books I've bought recently to read, Spirit just may fall a few notches in priority. *shrug*

I requested an ARC of The Spirit of the Place through the B&N bookclubs, and it arrived yesterday, so hopefully yours will too! Perhaps they were behind on printing up copies for everyone...

May 22, 2008, 2:14pm (top)Message 233: Neutiquam_Erro

I also haven't received Weaving a Way Home yet and my last name starts with U. Extrapolating a little, since they haven't reached L yet and its been 2 months, I would predict an arrival date for me sometime in 2017. (Using the New Sarcasm Math and Lecanomancy).

I'm just curious. I've gotten a couple of books thru B&N's First Look program, but I couldn't find Spirit of the Place on their sight. Where did you see that? (I'm still waiting for my LT copy, so I won't ask for it through B&N, but I'd hate to think that I'm missing a place to get free books :)

May 22, 2008, 4:16pm (top)Message 235: Kegsoccer

It was a pretty limited thing I think. Here's where they offered it: http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/bn/b...

May 22, 2008, 4:19pm (top)Message 236: muzzie

Neutiquam_Erro

Depends on the alphabet, I’m still waiting and mine starts with B. Might be using the pick the name out of the hat method, just to keep us guessing.

Remember the old addage "Be careful what you wish for". There may be a reason the books are late in coming.

May 22, 2008, 4:30pm (top)Message 237: JGoto

>235 Thanks - I found it. I have to admit that I find the discussion boards at B&N overwhelming. I usually read a couple of messages and then give up - there are just too many.

May 22, 2008, 5:57pm (top)Message 238: Kegsoccer

I do too so I just keep an eye on the "other places to get ARCs" thread, which is where I found out about that book. http://www.librarything.com/talktopic.ph...

I went and looked at the link you gave. B&N closed their requests just over a week ago and you got your book thru them already. Requests for Spirit thru LT closed TWO months ago and a number of us still haven't recieved our copies. Pretty shoddy business practice and diesrespectful to those that it was offered and promised to first IMO.

May 23, 2008, 9:28am (top)Message 241: infiniteletters

240: It's a problem with the publisher, not LT. LT doesn't send out the books.

May 23, 2008, 12:01pm (top)Message 242: rastaphrog

241

I've said several times I know LT has no control over it. All the same, what I said applies to the publisher. They offered the book up for the ER list. The list was closed and people selected two months ago. The publisher has yet to see fit to send out all the copies.

While I may not know all the ins and outs of the publishing business, I have a very hard time understanding how hard it could be to get the books out. The publisher offers up X number of copies. All they have to do is package them up, put on the address labels for those selected when they get the addresses, then mail them out.

May 23, 2008, 7:30pm (top)Message 243: chellerystick

Where is the publisher sending them out from? Maybe we can get some ER LT'ers to volunteer packaging them up... I could probably help if it's in St. Louis or Columbia, MO.

May 24, 2008, 2:00pm (top)Message 244: Kegsoccer

To those waiting for Spirit of the Place, as I mentioned- I signed up to get a copy through B&N awhile ago and received it today, so I would think that the ER copies would be coming any day now.

May 25, 2008, 11:50am (top)Message 245: Trismegistus

240>

That is disappointing (although I've had comparatively poor luck getting books through ER, so you're still a step ahead of me!). Perhaps the person running the B&N promotion is different than the person running the ER promotion, and a little more on the ball? Maybe you could try emailing the B&N contact and see if she couldn't get a book in the mail to you...?

I'm also still waiting for Weaving a Way Home, but I live in Canada, so it might take even longer. I don't mind too much, as long as I get it eventually...

I live in Michigan. My last name starts with G. I received Weaving a Way Home on 4/14/2008. I may have been the first one to receive it.

Right now, I'm waiting for Home Girl which I think was in the April bonus batch.

_This Gaming Life_ has at last made its appearance, after I'd essentially given up on ever seeing it! Anyone else still waiting for it, do not despair--there's hope!

Jun 13, 2008, 7:02pm (top)Message 251: synchroswimr

so it looks like This Gaming Life is finally on the way! Yay. I hope mine comes soon! Back in April, I gave them pre-paid mailer to the new owners of my house and hope they still have it for when my book finally comes!

I've finally received This Gaming Life today. Somebody must have really screwed up, because this isn't an ARC at all. It's the real deal with no ARC disclaimer and a real UPC/ISBN code on the back. They even took a moment to handwrite a thank you for being patient on the letter.

I'll admit the thank you addition softened the hard feelings a little bit, but I was still kind of grumbly it took this long to show up. I'll get over it, eventually.

Jun 18, 2008, 3:16pm (top)Message 254: Kplatypus

Another This Gaming Life arrival here. UPS. Also a nice new copy with a thank you/apology. Very serendipitous timing, since I'm literally moving out of this apartment today, within the next two hours, and I don't think UPS forwards packages! And now I have travel reading for my own roadtrip!

Jun 18, 2008, 7:40pm (top)Message 255: Esta1923

ER books are like babies-who-do-not-arrive-on-due-date! It behooves us to relax and know that almost all of the ER books in the program do eventually get to us. ***Our reviews of "America, America" beat out the NEW YORKER magazine's!

It's great to see people getting their copies of This Gaming Life finally. Now if only I'd start seeing messages from people finally getting The Spirit Of The Place too so I'd know to watch for mine!

Jun 20, 2008, 12:22pm (top)Message 260: keren7

I received an email from Abby this past week saying that she thought that all of the copies of The Spirit of the Place had been sent out so hopefully they will be coming soon. I am not holding my breath or anything though (not because I don't believe Abby but because I don't believe the publisher).

Jun 23, 2008, 4:00pm (top)Message 263: karen_o

Well, I haven't received The Spirit of the Place yet, nor have I received a note from Abby. Maybe I just dreamed that I was supposed to get that book?

I haven't either.

Jun 24, 2008, 12:27pm (top)Message 267: herebebooks

#266: Me too, but I'm hoping it'll show up this week (or...next week. Or anytime, really, just so long as it arrives safely! *sigh*).

Jun 24, 2008, 7:17pm (top)Message 268: lisalouhoo

I have not recieved THis Gaming Life yet either. But I am hopeful. Watching the front step with eagle eyes.

I'm glad to see you guys received This Gaming Life. I still haven't! Still worried!

Jul 5, 2008, 10:24am (top)Message 282: bookaholicgirl

I haven't received The Spirit of the Place yet either despite receiving an email from Abby on June 20th saying that they had all been sent. Unless they are personally hand delivering them to each person's house, I kind of think someone was pulling her leg. And I can honestly say that at this point I have absolutely no desire to write a review for this book and am not even positive that I want to read it at this point.

Jul 5, 2008, 11:24am (top)Message 283: Pandababy

I'm still waiting for Spirit of the Place too.

At this point, I can no longer write an "early review" - because the book was released to the public on June 15th, according to Amazon!

I'd still like to read the book, and if it arrives, I'd be happy to write a review promptly as usual.

Jul 5, 2008, 11:34am (top)Message 284: detailmuse

>282 et al: I too still wait. Now I wonder if their hand-written notes of apology are delaying their books. :(

The book's main page lists it in only 34 libraries, vs 100 who snagged copies via ER. At this point, that might include people who bought it at bookstores (it was released in mid-June).

Jul 5, 2008, 12:12pm (top)Message 285: philosojerk

I also still have not received a copy of The Spirit of the Place, nor did I receive any communication from Abby informing me that all copies had been sent. And I tend to agree with bookaholicgirl - even if the book turned out to be good, this publisher has already created such a negative reaction in me that I'm not sure I'd be willing to post a positive review which will encourage people to buy books from a business with such irresponsible practices.
