That's tough. There were some sites before, notable SingleFile (now dead) and Bibliophil (
http://www.bibliophil.org). Neither really took off, and they didn't quite have the idea LT and others ran with. I didn't know about either when I started LT. Certainly when I started LT the general opinion was that it was a fun hobby project, but a complete joke as a company. Only success changed that, eventually leading to millions of dollars being doled out to very imitative companies.
I heard it while I was on the road. I called my wife (on my handsfree) and said: "Hey... LibraryThing is on NPR!" but she didn't get a radio tuned in on time. Thanks for the link, kensor!
