What do you do when you're looking for an obscure book and can't find a copy? I'm also interested in what books others are hunting for. Maybe we can put our heads together.

I'm currently seeking a copy of The Platinum Man (touchstone doesn't work) by Borden Deal. It was published in 1989 but I can't find a copy anywhere on the net.

i don't think this will satisfy you, but i found a place where you can rent the book. never heard of this sort of thing but take a peek:

http://www.bookfinder.com/search/?isbn=0882820230&st=xl&ac=qr&src=di...

tcw, I had NO idea that Bookfinder showed book rentals and I'm at that site quite frequently. Thanks for the info. In the rental company's FAQ, they say that purchase is an option. I'll have to look into that further. Thank You!

anytime. what i did was use altavista, "platinum man" AND "borden deal".

only came back with a few sites, so checking out bookfinderwas easy.

i rarely go hunt for books, maybe a poetry book now and then, but more often if i need a book, i'll hunt the libraries. we've built up a decent library of our own, i'll probably never read all her books, or her mine ...

Thanks to VictoriaPL (#1) for asking and tcw (#2) for answering, cuz I just found 2 books using that bookfinder site!

tcw, So I placed an order with the book rental company yesterday. Today they emailed me that they had to cancel my order because they cannot locate their copy. So... the hunt continues!

I would inquire at your local public or university library about obtaining the book through inter-library loan. At least one library in the U.S. has a copy of the book (albeit in California) if the listing is up-to-date.

I took a look at worldcat, but also went to the library in question, Alameda County Library, and could not find it there. (Worldcat indicates that "The Platinum Man" was published in 1986).

The touchstone doesn't work because no one in LT owns a copy.

Google Books has a listing for it, but with No Preview.

This book was published posthumously. Maybe, it might be found in a special collection in Mississippi where he was born. Library of Congress, Detroit Public, and Boston Public do not appear to have it. All three of these libraries can be inconsistent in their cataloging vis-a-vis Worldcat.

This book could be a "phantom title". Maybe it was announced but subsequently never published. According to what we know from the sparse library data it was published by New Horizon Press in Far Hills, N.J. They seem to have a web site (http://www.newhorizonpressbooks.com). You could email them and ask.
