I've tried CueCat on 2 PC's. One is an XP SP3 laptop with 2gig RAM, other is an older DELL desktop with Vista SP1. On both, CueCat turns red as it should. Neither show CueCat as an additional keyboard.

Device manager shows them both as HID keyboard device.

I try and scan barcodes into Search box, with cursor flashing there. No results at all.

What do I need to do to get this to work or have I wasted USD$20.

If you can't get it to work, we of course will send you another one or refund it.

Have you tried scanning into Notepad or Word? We need to eliminate factors here.

How much have you varied the speed at which you move the CueCat across the barcode? I took a while before I was able to use mine consistently because I was scanning too fast or too slow most of the time.

Thanks avron and timspalding. I'll give your suggestions a try.

Does CueCat register as an additional keyboard, on your PC's ? Where does it show as an additional keyboard? It doesn't show in Explorer on my PC's.

Tim, I assume you mean scanning random text into Word or Notepad? If so, this doesn't work either. I'm using Works from Office 2000, and XP Pro Notepad

Make that Word, not Works :)

My laptop doesn't give me any indication that it's noticed my CueCat apart from making a 'bing' noise when I plug it in, the same noise that it makes when I plug in my USB drive.
I did notice the CueCat showing up as an HID keyboard device in the Device Manager as you can. Something I'd never thought to check.

I'm quite certain timspalding didn't mean scanning random text. Instead, I expect he was meaning that you should open up notepad (or whatever) and with that window as the focus try scanning a barcode. I did it myself last night and it provides a string of text that seems fairly consistent in length and largely the same as far what actual characters are present. It also seemed to be the same basic text as I was getting when I used my CueCat to add books previously.

"Random text"? No. Scan some barcodes. The CueCat doesn't handle text—were you under the impression it's a text scanner?

Thanks avron and timspalding, again.

My CueCat also pings when I plug it in. I would have thought it would show up in Explorer, though. Still that doesn't matter as long as it works. Should I unplug my HP PSC 1410 All-in-One printer / scanner when using CueCat. I can try that anyhow.

No I knew the CueCat was for barcodes not text, but was a little confused. :)

I will try notepad or Word 2000 with CueCat and see what happens.

Nope, neither Notepad or Word 2000 register barcodes. :(

What driver / dll, or whatever does CUeCat use in XP Pro. I've updated to SP3 on this laptop and Vista SP1 on my DELL desktop. Anyone using CueCat with the latest MS OS updates?

I'm going to forward this thread to Lindsey, who ships the CCs. She has more experience troubleshoot it than I do, but I suspect she'll give you a choice of a refund or another one.

Thanks Tim. I suspect it is a missing driver or DLL, rather than the CueCat.

I'd like another one if the choice arises. CC must use an existing XP Pro driver or DLL. I'd like to know what it uses in case mine is corrupted, or overwritten, by my HP printer / scanner model HP PSC 1410 software. Bazza

I really don't know—we are usually able to resolve the problems by sending a new one. PC internals aren't something I know about.

Hey, I've had some cuecats die on their bumpy way to Australia - the problem was solved by extra extra bubblewrap. Anyone needing bubblewrap should just email me at lindsey@librarything.com or info@librarything to tell me so. The mailers are already padded with bubble, but I guess sometimes it's just not enough. sigh.

I am happy to replace broken cuecats with new cuecats. Just email me, include your mailing address to make me less insane, and it will happen!

I'd suggest that you check the CueCat Guide as it's not always obvious how to get a CueCat to scan correctly.

Thanks, GreyHead. I'm printing out your guide. :) Bazza

Still waiting for replacement CueCat. It has been sent, but not arrived in OZ as yet. :( :( Bazza

CueCat arrived. :) Still to try it out. Busy helping loading CD's onto 3 iPODS.
