I think it is cool to find out when fellow bloggers are having contests for their ARCs - and I like it that there is a central place for people to post them.

Perhaps when this thread gets too large/unwieldy we should move it to the Tuesday Thingers group with a link over there.

I don't think this thread is out of line, but I think in the future our other group would be somewhat more appropriate than here, since "Tuesday Thingers" is basically the group for ER book bloggers.

I can create a new group for this if you feel it'd be more appropraite. I was thinking about that last night when I set up the thread, but I was also half asleep and not fully functioning.

I like it here. I don't really need to join another group that I need to check! And it's totally not spam. We did ASK for a list for contests! Spam would be an unwanted post that was unsolicited. But seeing how it was solicited by the readers it can't be Spam. If you don't like it put yourself on the "do not call" list and don't bother reading it! LOL

No offense but I'm not a huge fan of the Tuesday Thingers group because I'm not a huge blogger. (I don't have time for that, usually!)

It would be nice if Readafew came back and explained why they think this is spam. A thread for giving away books in an Early Reviewer forum hardly seems like spam to me.

Since you asked. The early reviewer forum is for LT's early reviewer program, not every Tom, Dick, and Harry.

What is abuse?
Do not use LibraryThing as an advertising medium. Egregious commercial solicitation is forbidden. No matter how great your novel, this does apply to authors.

This is also generating hits for the bloggers and is a form of advertisement. That is where I was coming from.

Also just because Abby has NOT said anything does not mean she agrees it's OK, she's busy and possibly hasn't seen/read this one yet. Beyond that I seem to be the only one who feels this way. I was just giving a warning.

I think the key words are EGREGIOUS and COMMERCIAL, neither of which apply. It's neither egregious nor commerical to have a clearly marked thread, which can be avoided, advertising blog giveaways that are not going to generate scads of revenue for the blogger, or lucrative prizes for the winners. Besides which, isn't the entire Early Reviewers program a form of advertisement for the authors and publishers, and putting reviews on LibraryThing and/or your blog is helping to advertise a product. That's certainly commercial, and more money is at stake for publishers than is at stake for bloggers running a giveaway. So if LT is to have no ads or promotions of any kind by that logic we should get rid of the whole ER program, no?

I was not planning to get into an argument over this. I expressed my opinion that this thread was a borderline case of abuse, an awful lot of people seemed to get very huffy about it and I left it alone until I was specifically asked Why.

Justify it however you want, but to be honest comparing personal blog advertising to the current COMMERCIAL site's own program and saying they are equal is stretching the things beyond all credibility to me.

I think I was saying they are NOT equal. And that that was my point.

I'm sorry you are upset by all the discussion on this subject but when you post something on a discussion board that's what happens- people discuss it.

Earlier, someone asked if this thread should stay here or if a new group should be made. I believe this should be a new group or posted elsewhere. This group, Early Reviewers, is specifically for the LibraryThing Early Reviewer's program. After reading several of the posts above, it seems as if many of the give-aways are not related in any way to the LTER program. For those of us ER'ers who don't want to participate, it would be very nice not to see this thread. Thanks.

A thread specifically set aside for letting people know about contests to win free books is not at all what I would consider COMMERCIAL. If we were selling books, that would be an entirely different matter.

And as far as I can see, Readafew, you are the first person to mention blog advertising. Someone did mention that the contests increased hits to their blogs, but have you visited any of the blogs that are mentioned? Not big on commercial advertising.

And to reiterate what BostonBibliophile said: this is a discussion forum, not a post and run forum. We are perfectly happy to discuss the matter, but posting something vaguely insulting (and calling this thread spam certainly qualifies) and then sitting back to watch the reactions? That's what trolls do, and I'm sure that's not the impression you were hoping to make.

So click the little gray X and it disappears. I don't have an objection to moving it, but I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that folks who are interested in Early Reviewer books might also be interested in other free books.

I agree. I fall into that category. I don't have a blog, but I am interested in other readers' book blogs and book contests. Why not leave the contest thread here? If you're not interested in contests, don't read the thread.

Agreed. I posted about my giveaway and I know it cost ME money to send the books I giveaway, there is no benefit financially. I do it because I am thankful to the people who do come visit. I know it is the same for the others who have posted here as well.

In the tradition started by Nitestar in hosting the ER Group book bloggers web ring and Marie at The Boston Bibliophile for hosting the Tuesday Thingers meme I liked to throw my hat in the ring and offer to host and admin a blog site to gather and post our book giveaways and contests.

I couldn't sleep last night (look at the post time) and took the liberty of putting together a blogger site for us. Please feel free to stop by, take a look around and let me know if you like what you see or not. In no way will my feelings be hurt if this doesn't fly. It was simply an idea that was keeping me up tonight.

Heather, if that's a hardcover of Darkly Dreaming Dexter and that's the cover art, you might want to take a look at the value. The hardcover with the original cover art is a lot more expensive (since they changed it after the series came out) than the newer art.
