I recently sponsored a child in El Salvador, and would like to read more about the country. I'm open to both fiction and non-fiction.

Salvador by Joan Didion is a fantastic account of her time in El Salvador during the 80s, and really captures the fear and paranoia of the time. Similarly, The Massacre at El Mozote by Mark Danner is a brilliant, important book about a particularly horrific incident during the war. I can't recommend anything more recent or optimistic though I'm afraid!
