Not really a "win" but I was quoted in the feedback of Random House's reader's circle newletter which I guess means I have a shot at winning more free books.

So much fun to win things!

Aug 5, 2008, 8:37am (top)Message 34: jenlaw77

23-I was so suprised to see The Rabbit in the Moon waiting for me at home yesterday, even though I didn't win the contest! One of the groups I belong to on Shelfari is reading this in September and I mentioned that, so perhaps that's why I received it? There was a nice handwritten note thanking me for my support inside the cover.

Aug 6, 2008, 12:05am (top)Message 35: Kplatypus

Okay, this wasn't a contest, nor are they ARCs, but I had to find somewhere to share. On the way to dinner tonight, I dropped by The Green Apple's free book bin and hit the motherlode! Scored, all for free: Lady Oracle by Margaret Atwood, The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien, Sons and Lovers by D. H. Lawrence, Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis, The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon (this is the only one that I've read already and the only one that was initially an ARC), Saturday by Ian McEwan, 3 by Flannery O'Conner, Utopia by St. Thomas More, Letters from the Earth by Mark Twain, The Professor and the Madman by Simon Winchester, Visions of Cody by Jack Kerouac, and Remembrance of Things Past: Volume 1 by, of course, Marcel Proust.

If that's not winning, I don't know what is. Score! I guess I can live with not receiving any new ARCs for a little while longer. . .

Aug 6, 2008, 12:16am (top)Message 36: lovemybooks

Rock on!! I'm jealous! (what's the Green Apple?)

Aug 6, 2008, 12:26am (top)Message 37: Kplatypus

I know! So lucky! The Green Apple is a bookstore in San Francisco, or rather, a triumvirate of entertainment procurement locales. I find the used book annex a tad overpriced and am too broke/cheap to buy CDs in the music department but the new book store (which includes a ton of super-cheap overstock books) is awesome and filled with many wonderful books, toys, and other miscellanea. Plus, as their crowning glories, they have four free book bins out front that people are welcome to use to deposit old books or snag new ones AND intermittent mega sales wherein one can buy some great books for less than a dollar. Anyone visiting SF should totally check it out, if only to browse.

I know, funny, right? Just browse in a book store . . .

Aug 6, 2008, 9:40am (top)Message 38: LisaLynne

That sounds fabulous!

By the way - my blog post this morning is about great bookstores. I'd love it if you came over and put yours on the list.

Aug 21, 2008, 5:51pm (top)Message 47: DevourerOfBooks

I won littlebookworm/Medieval Bookworm/Meghan's contest for Marie-Therese. Hooray!

Aug 21, 2008, 7:52pm (top)Message 48: anysia

I got Breach of Trust by Kimber Chin from a FreshFiction.com contest (always wondered if anyone ever won those).

Aug 21, 2008, 7:59pm (top)Message 49: posthumose

Wow Devourer, this is a good day for you!

May I ask the group if it's worth my while entering the contests for books on blogs? I'm happy to support other bboo bloggers, but typing, creating links, etc.,it's all physically difficult for me and I've never won a book in two years of trying at Booklounge,Randomhouse, 5 places like that altogether. I'm careful about the rules. I have entered for 5 or 6 books on book blogs in the last two weeks. I even want to have some book contests myself.
Realistically, how often does anyone win a book that way? Anyone ever keep track or notice a trend, one in ten, twenty, fifty? Thanks in advance.

Aug 21, 2008, 8:05pm (top)Message 50: mint910

I've won 3 books in about 5 months or so. Two of these times I was a runner up, either the winner already had the book or never claimed their prize!

Edit: Actually I've won 4 books! Whoops!

Message edited by its author, Aug 21, 2008, 8:06pm.

Aug 21, 2008, 8:06pm (top)Message 51: DevourerOfBooks

I've won in at least 3 places in the last 6 months. I definitely don't enter every one I see, just the ones I'm really pretty interested in. Your chances will vary depending on the readership of the blog and the interest level in the book.

Aug 21, 2008, 8:09pm (top)Message 52: icedtea

>48
congrats, I've started to enter a few of those myself.

Aug 21, 2008, 8:51pm (top)Message 53: lovemybooks

I never won anything until I entered Blog contests. I had a great week a couple of weeks ago!

Aug 21, 2008, 9:07pm (top)Message 54: bermudaonion

I've won 2 blog contests, but I've only received the book for the second one. I only enter contests for books that I would ordinarily read.

Aug 21, 2008, 10:12pm (top)Message 55: anysia

Interesting. I've won about 3 in the last 4 or 5 months or so. I'm not sure how many I entered. I only enter contests where I'm really interested in the book (usually there's more chance that I'm interested in the blog doing the giveaway that way too).

You have a pretty good chance of winning Joy Nash's Immortals: The Crossing that a few of us here on LT are involved in (including me), based on the amount of entries so far.

Aug 21, 2008, 10:40pm (top)Message 56: littlebookworm

I've won once, only started trying about two months ago, though. I also only enter contests for books I'm actually interested in, otherwise I let it go to someone who is more excited about it than I am.

Aug 22, 2008, 1:25am (top)Message 57: lenoreva

I have won mostly blog contests, but I did win one book from Yummy Mommy and one from TeensReadToo. It took me about 2 months before I finally won and then I won like 5 in the space of 2 weeks.

There are a lot of contests out there where there are only 13 entries or so - and those are good odds.

Aug 22, 2008, 3:33pm (top)Message 58: writestuff

I've won several book from blogs - your odds go up if there are not many entries (obviously!!). I don't often do the "blog about the contest" thing (which usually increases one's odds by giving you additional chances), but just leave comments. I figure it is simple and quick and if I win a book - yahoo!

Aug 22, 2008, 4:53pm (top)Message 59: 24girl

#48 I also won Breach of Trust. My copy was pdf though. Was yours an actual book? I've also won one other Fresh Fiction contest but it was collectable figures not a book or gift card.

Aug 22, 2008, 6:30pm (top)Message 60: anysia

Yeah, it was an e-book. I don't mind the occasional one.

Aug 26, 2008, 3:23pm (top)Message 61: redladysbooks

I had good luck this past week! I won the book What Happened to Anna K. by Irina Reyn from a giveaway on the blog The things we read. I also won One Fifth Avenue by Candace Bushnell from a giveaway by Dar at her blog Peeking between the pages.

Message edited by its author, Aug 26, 2008, 3:24pm.

Aug 28, 2008, 11:19am (top)Message 62: LisaLynne

I won a book this morning! Talk about good timing - I was checking my feeds and there was a post at Read Street giving away 5 free books for foodies. I snagged a copy of The Spice Merchants Daughter...and it looks like there's one book left!

Posthumose, I have won one book on a blog and on another occasion I received the blogger's copy (very generous of them!). I think it's perfectly possible - there are surely fewer entries on blogs than on the contests sponsored by publishers, so I think your chances are better. I usually just post a comment, although I sometimes post a link, if there are several interesting contests going on.

Aug 28, 2008, 5:57pm (top)Message 63: bermudaonion

LisaLynne - I tried to nab that last book, but the site messed up. I got a nice email from them offering me Home by Marilynne Robinson, The Other Queen by Philippa Gregory, or Ms. Hempel Chronicles by Sarah Shun-lien Bynum.

Message edited by its author, Aug 28, 2008, 5:58pm.

Aug 28, 2008, 10:37pm (top)Message 64: redladysbooks

I tried to snag one of the foodie books as well but there were problems with the site. I also got a nice email like bermudaonion and was offered the same ones listed and Sweetsmoke by David Fuller so I asked for that one as I definitely want to read it. Bermudaonion, which book did you choose?

Aug 29, 2008, 8:23am (top)Message 65: bermudaonion

I chose Home by Marilynne Robinson. I'm excited about it and I was very impressed by how they handled the whole thing.

Aug 29, 2008, 10:19am (top)Message 66: LisaLynne

That's super! They do moderate comments, so I wasn't sure when I posted mine if there were any books left. I think it's great that they offered you another choice!

Aug 29, 2008, 8:10pm (top)Message 67: redladysbooks

I won a CD audiobook set of Dorothea Benton Franks Bulls Island from a random drawing through Reading Group Choices. I get their free newsletter which qualified me for the drawing.
