Jul 29, 2008, 8:02pm (top)Message 1: PhoenixTerranI know that at least several of us have received e-mails from Bostick Communications. Does anyone know anything about them? I responded to the first three e-mails they sent, but haven't heard or received anything from them. I know nothing about them except sometime in the last two weeks I started getting emails from them. I haven't requested any of their books though. No idea! Bostick Communications is a spammer see http://www.techsurvivors.net/forums/lofi... and http://ceruleansanctum.com/2008/05/sacre... Message edited by its author, Jul 29, 2008, 8:41pm. Jul 29, 2008, 8:49pm (top)Message 4: AliramblesFrom their website: "Bostick Communications began in 1988 as one of the largest broadcast fax providers of financial press releases to the financial community. Over the years we have expanded to four data centers and offer not only broadcast fax services, but also broadcast e-mail services. Within the past nine years, we have become one of the dominant press release distribution services, offering e-mail distribution of releases to specific writers in major print, trades, radio, television, e-zines and blogs." "For a flat rate of only $20 we will transmit your press release to your custom database of 500 recipients or less in minutes." They also have a page of testimonials, many of them from authors who have used their services. Personally, I'm holding off on responding to any of their offers for now. Personally, I don't mind getting the emails if they're legit, but I have yet to hear of anyone actually receiving a book from them. Are the books being sent out? I've received about 4 books from their efforts. I've forwarded the messages on to friends who have received books from them as well. So, they are legit! I've never received a response that I'm getting the book, it just arrives in the mail. which books have you gotten? Just wondering if they were the ones that I (along with the others here) have requested. Message edited by its author, Jul 29, 2008, 9:21pm. Jul 29, 2008, 9:30pm (top)Message 8: TooFondOfBooksI've received 2 children's books that I requested in response to the emails. One is The Rabbit and the Snowman, the other is Little Bit and Big Byte, a Day at the Beach (no touchstones, apparently). I haven't requested any Bostick books other than these two aimed at kids. The books both came to me directly from the author. Jul 29, 2008, 9:30pm (top)Message 9: silverheronI have received one book Fiscal Pear and Shimmer in the Call of River Whale (My review of this interestingly odd little book will be forthcoming). I also requested The Organ Grinder and the Monkey and received a letter from the author letting me know this is forth coming. Some of the books seem a little off beat but I think that they are worth a look at if you are tired of the same old stuff. You never know you may find some real gems out there and discover an author before anyone else. Now on the down side my TBR stack is so huge it is hard to devote much time to really unknown work. I think I can only handle them every so often. It does appear that the books listed are legit. The authors contacted me really fast after my contact email with them. Jul 29, 2008, 9:31pm (top)Message 10: jenlaw77I haven't requested any from them in a few months. I requested and received The Age of Innocence, Boone's Creek, and a few others. Jul 29, 2008, 9:32pm (top)Message 11: KegsoccerHm I guess it hasn't been that long since I've requested any... looks like the earliest was 7/2 so they really could still come. Glad to hear that some people have been successful! Jul 29, 2008, 9:37pm (top)Message 12: nbmarsI received both Fiscal Pear and Little Bit and Big Byte, and I have to say, based on those two, I probably won't request any more from Bostick! Jul 29, 2008, 9:43pm (top)Message 13: yourotherleftI received a couple from responding to their e-mails a while back - Heavier Than Air by Nona Caspers and The Painter From Shanghai by Jennifer Cody Epstein. I never received a response to my e-mails either, but the books showed up on my doorstep pretty quickly. Jul 29, 2008, 10:02pm (top)Message 14: jenlaw77In my experience, most books I've received are from new, self-published authors. Jul 29, 2008, 11:48pm (top)Message 15: anysiaYou have to look up the publisher. Although there are a lot of self-published authors promoted through Bostick, not all of them are. Jul 30, 2008, 1:39am (top)Message 16: lovemybooksI've received a few. Jul 30, 2008, 6:51am (top)Message 17: PhoenixTerranThanks for all the responses, everyone. Aug 1, 2008, 9:25am (top)Message 18: LisaLynneI've requested three (Point of Entry, Will I Ever Know and The Front Porch project). The earliest was in late July, so there's still plenty of time for them to show up. I don't mind reviewing stuff by unknown authors, as long as its worth reading, so why not? According to the TechForum entry, they send only religious spam, which doesn't seem to be the case from the emails I've seen. I also don't know if I would consider it necessarily spam, at least in my case. I have my email up on my blog and I've encouraged folks to contact me if they have books they'd like me to review, so if I get an email like that, I guess I asked for it. Aug 2, 2008, 11:13am (top)Message 19: dcw888I received today Scarecrow Finds a Friend by Blume J. Rifken which was offered by Bostick (mailed directly from the author). I opened it immediately and it is a beautiful, hardcover, full color, well done book. I read it to my kids as soon as I opened it and they wanted me to read it again. I won't hesitate to take Bostick up on their offers if I think I'll enjoy it. They are legit. Aug 2, 2008, 12:21pm (top)Message 20: lovemybooks19--oh good, I hope I get that one. here's my theory...Bostick sends the requests to the authors and they decide who to mail to. The books always arrive directly from the authors. Aug 2, 2008, 12:48pm (top)Message 21: thekoolaidmomlovemybooks: I think you are correct on that, because whenever I have requested the books offered through Bostick the email confirmation comes from the author. Aug 2, 2008, 12:56pm (top)Message 22: lovemybooksI've never gotten a confirmation email! But some of the books have shown up. Aug 3, 2008, 11:21pm (top)Message 23: Alirambles>19 I thought about requesting that to review with my kids but I wondered if it was too young for them and would hate for them to give it an unfair review based on that. From the day the president first kissed Monica Lewinsky on November 15, 1995, to his tragic downfall and public scandal, The Clinton Diaries brings the sensational headlines to startling life in the President's imagined secret diary. In the novel, Clinton, obsessed and beleaguered, tells the story as only he can. Encounters in his private Oval Office study. Lying to Hillary. Crying with Chelsea. Playing self-righteous during marriage counseling. Angry when having his blood drawn. Remorseful when praying with clergy. The Clinton Diaries is a work of fiction, satire and parody. The conversations between the characters are uniformly speculation and solely products of the author's imagination. The author acknowledges the wealth of material upon which he has drawn inspiration, including the historical record and major printed works by and about the primary protagonists. The author acknowledges his debt to The Starr Report, the grand jury testimonies of the major players, and the accomplished reporting by the nation's journalists. If I was any more "empowered" I'd gag...oh wait, I doubt very much that self help gurus intend female empowerment to mean fixing my leaky plumbing, painting my house, blogging and quilting. she probably means I should sit around a carp about men. I've noticed in the past that "female empowerment" seems to mean an awful lot of complaining about our lot in life. And I just don't have the patience for that!! (Don't think hubby is a jerk...I like to paint and I'm too cheap to pay someone to do a worse job than I do, hubby doesn't do plumbing, but its ok, I don't do electrical. Webs of Power is set in unforgiving environment of the corporate playground. It's a raw, unsentimental portrayal of greed, manipulation, and relationships set in the excessive, insatiable retail industry of the 1980s. It is a story about three dynamic and determined women who find the courage to drastically reshape their lives in the face of crises and the twists of fate. When a hostile takeover of the retail giant Consolidated is announced, the lives of three determined women, each linked to the corporate upheaval, are unexpectedly thrown off course: Paige Toddman's marriage to Consolidated's West Coast Division CEO is threatened when she decides to step out of her fast-paced lifestyle to raise the unwanted child she is carrying, a choice driven by her secret past. The fabric of Ashleigh McDowell's life begins to fray when her fiancé, the president of Consolidated's West Coast Division, moves away and her father figure faces a lawsuit that could wipe out his controlling shares of the company's stock. Vain and power hungry, Viviana De Mornay will stop at nothing to become the wife of the man leading the takeover. Quinn has written a thrilling, real-world drama with dynamic characters. The immediacy of the prose and fast-paced storyline quickly captivate the reader and hold that attention throughout Webs of Power. Much of the dialogue seems authentic to the characters while also servicing the plot, and Quinn skillfully imparts background knowledge and descriptive information necessary to establish context for the reader. For those who want to complement daily media accounts of swim times, medal ceremonies and gymnastics scores with a late-summer read, The Dharma King will hit the shelves just in time. Described as a thrilling novel of one man's quest to save Tibet - and himself - The Dharma King is an epic chase to find and bring the baby Panchen Lama, the spiritual counterpart to the Dalai Lama, to safety. The timely story guides the reader to examine the competing interests of capitalism and spirituality, China's emergence onto the world stage, Tibet's future and the personal struggle to find meaning in a changed world, says B.G. Stroh, while raising individuals' spiritual awareness. "The inescapable tragedy of the current Tibetan situation drew me to the struggles of the Panchen Lama," explains Stroh, who has traveled throughout Tibet, Bhutan and Nepal, and studied Tibetan Buddhism. "The novel ties together one man's personal quest with responsibility for something greater in the world in a fascinating story." The story traces the physical and spiritual journal of a young American man, the eldest son of a wealthy San Francisco family. With a guaranteed life of privilege and power ahead of him, he books a flight to Kathmandu on a whim after college graduation - a flight with events that will change him forever. Samuel Falk Simms, Jr., races against time, a vicious Chinese colonel and his own demons to save what may be the last hope of a religion and culture in peril. Searching Buddhist temples and foreign cities, and crossing the Himalayan plains, he is guided by a fleeting glimpse of an obscure map, a new love and the long-buried truth within him. On his journey to find the Panchen Lama, says Stroh, Sam comes to terms with a deeper level of meaning in his own life. "I hope that each reader can be his or her own 'Dharma King' and follow his or her own path by being mindful and aware.because until we take personal responsibility for the world that we live in, and until we each follow our own hearts, nothing will change." A portion of the proceeds from the novel will be donated to the re-established Sera Jhe Monastery in southern India. About the book: The Dharma King by B.G. New book: Vulture Culture Dirty Deals, Unpaid Claims, and the Coming Collapse of the Insurance Industry A Hard-Hitting Exposé of a Problem-Plagued Industry and a Compelling Case for Federal Regulation "A must-read for anyone who is interested in understanding the moral decline and fall of America's insurance industry." − J. Robert Hunter, Director of Insurance, Consumer Federation of America Newton Square, PA - August 6, 2008 - 47 million Americans are living without health insurance.as we all know from the raging political debates over health care reform. Less familiar but just as serious are the risks for the 257 million Americans who have invested their money and faith in health, home, life, auto, business, or other insurance. Ask anyone who's been denied coverage for a critical surgical procedure. Ask the hundreds of thousands of homeowners devastated by the damage of Hurricane Katrina and unpaid claims. Forget peace of mind. For the majority of insured Americans, the insurance industry promises emotional turmoil and financial peril. "The insurance system, as it exists, offers no reliable protection," writes attorney Eric D. Gerst. After decades of representing clients in the insurance business, he began to question his belief in the benefits of insurance when his trusted carrier inexplicably turned down a legitimate claim. While reeling from his experience, he began to take a hard look at the huge insurance industry, with over $1.4 trillion in premium volume in 2006. What he found shocked, outraged, and compelled him to write Vulture Culture: Dirty Deals, Unpaid Claims, and the Coming Collapse of the Insurance Industry "A poorly regulated, uncontrolled business climate, where negative forces are allowed to flourish and prey on the unwary".that's how Gerst came to view a cornerstone of the U.S. economy. His probing research into the insurance industry uncovered a treacherous trio: rampant fraud and corruption among insurance businesses; 50 separate state fiefdoms with unequal, frequently clashing regulations; and glaring lack of oversight or intervention by the federal government. In Vulture Culture, Gerst reveals how a once respected industry got to such a shameful, precarious state. Filled with candid interviews, shocking numbers, and horrifying stories, chapters shed arresting light on: Bid-rigging, secret payoffs, deceptive accounting, fraudulent sales and marketing tactics, and other unscrupulous practices conducted by well known, top-of-the-line brokers and insurers. Tales of rogue insurance executives-like Martin Frankel, who looted millions from policyholders at eight life insurance companies, then fled to Europe with suitcases packed with diamonds-that exemplify the failures of CEO accountability and the regulators. The uproar after Hurricane Katrina, riled up by a small print "gotcha clause" backing up the denial of an estimated $2 billion in insurance claims by policyholders whose property damage was caused by a combination of hurricane wind and floodwater. The rise of "alien insurers"-that is, foreign takeovers of U.S. insurance companies- and the huge financial problems that come with the territory of unregulated reinsurers. A dozen ominous insurance trends, poised to strike in the next decade. They include the continued growth and unassailable power of HMOs; increased skyrocketing of medical malpractice premiums; public conversion of companies, favoring shareholders over claimants; wild sales of insurance on the internet; and battles over terrorism coverage. Is there any hope for salvation? Yes, as Gerst persuasively argues. In the midst of the industry's current mess, looming disasters, and escalating public uproar, many insurers and policymakers have started movements toward significant regulatory changes. After assessing four popular options, Gerst makes a strong case for a Uniform Federal Omnibus Insurance Law (UFOIL). As he explains, this would transform the entire insurance industry in a two-step process. The first step, "consumerization," would focus on improving communication and claims resolution between policyholders and insurers. The second step, "federalization," would establish one set of standards and rules for the industry and give the federal government regulatory power over state insurer's decisions. "The insurance system needs to be overhauled, and quickly," Gerst stresses. "Failure to do so could mean that each of us, as individuals or business insurance consumers, might be one major contested insurance claim away from a crisis, one major insurance company failure away from financial disaster." Calling urgent attention to America's latest-and most widespread and costliest- business scandal, Vulture Culture is also a call to action for insurance industry professionals, legislators, consumer activists, and America's 257 million diligent policyholders. About the book: Vulture Culture by Eric Gerst ISBN: 978-0814400265 Publisher: AMACOM Date of publish: April 23, 2008 Pages: 256 S.R.P.: $24.00 About the author: Eric D. Gerst has worked as an attorney and legal consultant for more than 30 years. He was formerly a senior partner in a law firm with offices in Philadelphia and Washington, DC, where he served as general counsel to a national insurance brokerage company, as well as represented various corporations and individuals involved in the insurance business. In addition to testifying before Congress on insurance industry abuses, he made a case to the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee for the establishment of a natural catastrophe insurance fund to protect coastal homeowners. He lives in Newton Square, Pennsylvania. Note: Review copies of this book are available by replying to this e-mail. Please include your mailing address. It was sent by the author, address label hand written, return address sticker looks like its his personal address, not some publicist type. I thought it sounded like a good book, its looks at least, don't disappoint. It depends on the author as to whether they ship to Canada or not. I got one confirmation that I was getting a book (hasn't shown up yet) and I had sent them my address with CANADA in caps underneath it. Edit: I must be thinking of another Bostick thread. I requested it 7/3 and it looks like Bostick emailed the author/pub the same day. Then there's a letter dated 7/30. And finally it's postmarked 8/9. So they didn't move very quickly, but I'm glad I did finally get it. Aug 11, 2008, 3:16pm (top)Message 57: KegsoccerAnd today's Bostick message: Beverly Hills' Top Healer Reveals Revolutionary Disease-Curing Secrets in New Book West Hills, CA - August 11, 2008 - For years alternative healer Nick Kostovic's practice in Beverly Hills has been a place of pilgrimage for those seeking revolutionary alternative medical treatments. Now, Kostovic is sharing the secrets behind many of his remarkable medical and scientific discoveries in Universe God's Jewel, a fascinating new book just published by Outskirts Press. Universe God's Jewel explains how Kostovic's practice, the Bio Technological Health Center, has managed to improve the lives of terminally sick patients¾people with diseases such as cancer, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis and more, many of whose stories and remarkable transformations are detailed in-depth. The breakthrough involves equipment developed by Kostovic enabling him strengthen the energy field for the complex attraction of elementary biochemical charges to the central nervous system. The applied power emanates from the elementary field of sun's rays, which he conducts through the body of the patient. End result? When properly applied to the diseased human body, this energy, through a machine called the Biotechnological Energizer, slows down the aging process and actually cures terminal degenerative diseases, giving hope to those who have been written off by the traditional medical establishment. The nuts and bolts behind such audacious claims are explained in two parts. The first describes elementary biochemical electricity in easy-to-understand language, while the second part tackles subjects from antimatter to the theory of the general harmony of diversity. The book lays out much of the exciting research Kostovic has completed over the past 15 years, which has succeeded in discovering how to stimulate and heal the central nervous system by awakening the billions of passive nerve cells and by strengthening the active nerve cells-in essence, using the body's own ability to heal itself by issuing a "wake-up call" to healthy cells. But Universe God's Jewel doesn't stop there. A holistic work, the book touches on intriguing aspects of astronomy, human origin and energy. The latter is discussed in relation to another important invention by Kostovic: a forthcoming engine that will utilize eco-friendly electric fuel as an absolute replacement for crude oil and gas. Truly a major contribution to the literature of alternative healing and scientific research, "Universe God's Jewel" is a must-read for those looking for the latest research into healing technologies that fall outside of mainstream medicine-but have the potential to save innumerable lives. Aug 12, 2008, 7:25pm (top)Message 61: TrishNYCIn my humble opinion, Bostick Communication appears to be a legit outfit(at least as far my dealings with them goes). I have requested and received many books from them including: The painter from Shanghai by Jennifer Cody Epstein Fire Fish by Davy Liu Divorcing Dwayne by J.L. Miles Sweet Mandarin by Helen Tse Revolution by Alex Tamayo Wolf The Tuscan Trilogy by Derek Adie Flower Ringside, 1925 by Jen Bryant Nineteenth Street by Brett Wood(In fact this just arrived as I was writing this post) Boycott by Jerry Caraccioli ...and others that I can't remember right now. In my experience, most of the books are sent out by the authors themselves and the emails are sent out by Bostick which I guess is their advertising company. I have so far not had any problems with them. Sometimes books get to you within days of your response to the emails sometimes, its takes weeks. I have never gotten an email from them telling me I would be getting a book. I just get it in the mail and sometimes by UPS. I send in my reviews when I write them(in addition to posting them on LT and Amazon) to someone called Ken(can't remember his last name right now). They never requested this but I just thought they may like to have it. Be warned: While majority of the books I have received from them have been pretty good, some are just terrible, from the front cover to the actual content. Aug 13, 2008, 3:07pm (top)Message 67: KplatypusA New Bostick Message: New book: YES, You Can Make It Happen St. Petersburg, FL - August 13, 2008 - YES, You Can Make It Happen, by Juna Jinsei Ph.D, is a non-fiction Self-Help/Personal Growth/New-Age book written to open the minds and touch the hearts of those seeking to bring wellness and balance into every aspect of their lives so they can continue to evolve into fulfilled happy individuals. It combines facts, drama, and humor to persuade people to stop concentrating on their differences, while letting go of their generalizations when judging others, lack of tolerance in social situations, and harmful negative attitudes. It is a tool to assist individuals in developing a healthy intellectual curiosity and seeking spirit. YES, was written to help those striving for self-improvement to overcome the prejudices, doubts, fears, and guilt deeply embedded in their lives since youth. Even though many, who suffer from the effects of wrong-thinking, continue to travel down the road that their families and society have carved out for them; they keep seeking elsewhere since they haven't found any real answers or relief for the problems and pain in their lives. YES, was written to smoothly fill the gap, like a bridge of salvation, between what the readers know and what they need to learn to reach a state of wisdom, wellness, wholeness, and eventually, indestructible happiness. It begins with the darkest moments of the author's life, when no hope seemed possible. This led her on a spiritual quest, which she shares step-by-step, as she experienced each new discovery. YES, allows the reader to examine the origins of mankind, the natural development of isolated civilizations, influential ancient philosophies, and an array of different religions and belief systems to demonstrate that the essence, nature, and needs of all people worldwide are the same. The present age of Mappo is explained through Shakyamuni's predictions, which demonstrate that we are currently at a time when global awareness will help mankind achieve world peace. This is followed by the origins and uses of many popular New-Age metaphysical sciences and healing arts being reintroduced into society today, along with the theologies of Yoga, Huna, and Zen, and the practices of Tibetan, Hindu, Yahweh, and Buddhist chants. These comparisons lead to the introduction of the life and heart of Nichiren Daishonin, his incredible discovery, and how he sacrificed by teaching others about the essence of the Lotus Sutra. Its analytical approach mingled with interesting personal experiences of self-discovery leads to its uplifting conclusion, describing the author's progressive revelations and personal development, while practicing these metaphysical arts and concludes with the joyful experiences of her friends and family, before and after applying these alternative healing techniques. The ancient wisdom between these pages offers the opportunity to learn a variety of natural healing methods to apply that are safe, easy, and effective ways to overcome any suffering, as well as the perfect tool to help others to achieve their own personal growth. Sacramento, CA - August 15, 2008 - It took Philip Chabot 40 years to tell his story. Chabot was an integral part of what he believes to be an American conspiracy, where the U.S. Government and the CIA took advantage and held hostage a select group of people who had psychic abilities in order to spy on other countries. In his new book, Operation Blue Light: My Secret Life Among Psychic Spies , Chabot finally divulges his frightening experiences as a Psychic Spy with the United States Military Intelligence. An unusual and compelling memoir, this is a true account of deception and subterfuge-a book unlike any other on the market today. Traditional methods of gathering intelligence include using satellites, intercepting communications and recruiting agents. However, now top secret documents have emerged revealing that the Ministry of Defense ran a covert project to recruit psychic during the Cold War in the hope of tracking down people and items of interest to the government and the military. According to Chabot, "The use of psychic spies may still be happening today. Most recently, by the 1990s, it was revealed that the Pentagon continued to employ a highly classified team of 'psychic spies,' who use a form of remote viewing to aid in the gathering of intelligence in foreign countries." Operation Blue Light: My Secret Life Among Psychic Spies, reveals the government's never- ending fascination and involvement with "mental" technologies and their collusion with psychiatric types to master control of the human mind for their own purposes and schemes. For the very first time, we get a chance to see what they were doing in the 1960's. Chabot gives us a look at abilities, techniques and practices never before revealed. You can also view Chabot's harrowing tale through 12 videos on You-Tube by visiting www.philipchabot.com . Aug 15, 2008, 5:00pm (top)Message 69: charlenemartelI've had a number of books from them. I would say 6 or 7 so far. That said, not every book I have requested has been sent. In one of the parcels containing a book that was obtained through bostick, there was a print out of my email. The publisher/author had included it for me and from what I read on there all that happens when you respond is that bostick forwards it to the author/publisher in question with a statement saying you have requested the book. It's then up to that contact to respond to you by sending the book or declining - or as it always seems, ignoring your request. They do however take quite a time to arrive. I usually seem them arrive a good month /month and a half after I request a title. Aug 18, 2008, 2:16pm (top)Message 82: KplatypusNew fantasy fiction thriller - Lord Tophet Merion Station, PA - August 18, 2008 - Author Gregory Frost introduces his newest work , Lord Tophet , a fantasy fiction thriller part of the Shadowbridge duology. "A master class on storytelling and myth-making by a gifted writer working at the top of his game." So says SciFi Weekly about Gregory Frost's Shadowbridge duology, which is transforming the face of fantasy fiction. The first volume introduced us to the world of Shadowbridge-a world comprising infinite spirals of bridges ("think of a Ponte Vecchio the size of the world")-upon which travels Leodora, the young shadowpuppeteer. Filled with tales within tales, the novel wove its way toward the very heart of storytelling. With the release of Lord Tophet, "the satisfyingly multilayered sequel to Shadowbridge" finds storyteller Leodora blessed-or cursed-by the attention of the gods whose tales she knows. As she seeks for the mythical inverted realm of the Pons Asinorum, darker forces are hunting her, intent on silencing her before she recites the tale of their death-dealing master, the faceless Lord Tophet. "(T)he charm of an ancient storyteller and the wit of a contemporary tale-spinner" "The prose has an exotic, even ethereal feel, and Frost twines Leodora/Jax's tales into the body of the story quite nicely. The legends she recounts somehow make this fantastic Shadowbridge place more real, as if it has an actual history among and beyond the tales and myths." - San Diego Union-Tribune About the book: Lord Tophet by Gregory Frost ISBN: 978-0345497598 Publisher: Del Rey Date of publish: July 29, 2008 Pages: 240 S.R.P.: $14.00 About the author: Gregory Frost is the author of seven novels, the most recent being the acclaimed duology, Shadowbridge and Lord Tophet, as well as many short stories of the fantastic, including those in the collection Attack of the Jazz Giants & Other Stories. I think Bostick thinks I'm a new age hippie type. Odd. First The Secret Became a Publishing Phenomenon. Now Get Ready for The Truth. "The Secret" has sold more than 5.3 million copies while bringing the Law of Attraction to the forefront of the public mind. Now a new book called "The Truth," which uses the results of experiments by respected researchers to overturn a basic tenet of modern science, explains why the Law of Attraction works some times but not others. According to the publisher, those who read this book will not only become empowered, they will experience a shift to a new, higher level of consciousness, fulfilling prophecies the world as we know it will end by December 21, 2012. Richmond, VA - August 18, 2008 - A new book called The Truth: What You Must Know Before December 21, 2012 by award-winning author Stephen Hawley Martin draws on research by noted quantum physicist Raymond Chiao of the University of California, and that of professor and philosophy department head at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, Stephen Braude, to overturn the basic tenet currently held by science that awareness, intelligence and the mind are created by the brain. Evidence developed through research conducted by a number of other credible sources is also cited to substantiate this claim and to explore the ramifications of it, including that by the late Ian Stevenson, Carlson Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Division of Personality Studies at the Health Sciences Center of the University of Virginia, the late Harold S. Burr, Hunt Professor Emeritus of Anatomy at Yale University School of Medicine, and Rogerio Lobo, chairman of obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University's College of Physicians & Surgeons. The author said, "All I've done is connect the dots, but even so, the implications and ramifications of The Truth are enormous and far-reaching. They have to do not only with how and why we create our personal realities -- as well as our collective reality -- but how we ought to relate to one another and the planet. Once The Truth and its implications are widely known, a major shift in humanity's consciousness to higher ground should indeed occur, as well as a big leap forward in the personal empowerment of individuals - - and of groups connected by a common cause." What does this have to do with 2012? Several ancient and modern prophecies exist of a significant change taking place by the end of that year. The Mayan Calendar, for example, ends on December 21, 2012. The 5000 year old I CHING of ancient China can also be interpreted to predict end of the world on that date. The Web Bot, a computer program said to have predicted the 9/11 attracts, the destruction of Hurricane Katrina and other catastrophes also predicts a world-altering event by then. Rather than widespread physical destruction, however, many leaders of the New Thought movement believe a shift in consciousness will occur culminating in 2012. New Interactive Children's Book Instills Life Skills Authors to Donate 50 Percent of Royalties to Charity Plains, PA - August 20, 2008 - In a world where self-worth is often defined solely in monetary terms, it's not easy these days teaching children to become caring and responsible adults. But a beautifully illustrated new children's book is offering parents and teachers a secret weapon in the effort to instill important life skills-and become better people in the process. Just published by Books for Living, "Daddy, What Is Success?" from authors Richard A. Singer Jr., Helen Thomas and Joseph Betty, helps establish the foundational principles that experts agree form the bedrock for a child's future happiness and achievement: from recognizing the importance of equality and being willing to share, to seizing on their inherent potential and helping others. The book's message starts with a homework assignment. When Kaitlyn and Emily are asked to write about their meaning of the word "success," they ask the other kids at their school. The answers-to have the nicest clothes or biggest pile of money-don't satisfy them, so they ask their dad. What follows are eight secrets "that will make you the best big person you can be," the kids are told. Presented in an engaging rhyme format, these secrets encourage children to live each day to the fullest, and are sure to get them thinking beyond themselves and recognize the value of caring. Children will learn why everyone is created equal; how sharing increases everyone's happiness; why money isn't the goal of life and much, much more! But "Daddy" doesn't stop there. Following each secret is a list of interactive parent/child questions designed to spur discussion. For instance, the questions that follow secret No. 2¾which encourages helping others¾asks children what they will do to help someone; another asks how they might receive help themselves. Each secret is also expressively illustrated in vibrant full-color, and questions throughout the book encourage children to come up with their own stories describing what is happening in the pictures. "This book...was inspired by the divinity we observed in our own children and it is written for each and every child that inhabits this Earth," the authors state in their introduction. "The purpose of this book is to provide children with the foundational principles for successful living." And now parents and teachers can spread the goodwill even further. Fifty percent of all royalties from book sales will go to benefit six nonprofit organizations: The Make A Wish Foundation, the Damon and Stella Foundation for Mental Health, Elton John's Aids foundation, Indra Loka Animal Sanctuary, Scholarship Fund for Choices Drug and Alcohol Treatment center and the American Cancer Society. It's all part of the Million Dollar Run, co-author Richard Singer's charity effort to break a 27-year-old world record By traveling on foot from Los Angeles to New York City. Loosely based on Little's humorous magazine column - MEXICAN BOWL FISHING is a collection of short stories describing the bad karma and embarrassing events in Little's life and the lessons that he's taken from them to make life better. Common sense fables derived from ridiculously funny situations, Little's tales keep the reader vividly entertained while pointing out where he's gone wrong along the way. Unlike his column, however, MEXICAN BOWL FISHING's focus is on how to apply those lessons to everyday life rather than business. William Douglas Little's writing style is casual, real world and conversational helping to gain the acceptance of a wide audience demographic. His tales, all based upon real events, are funny and often purposely exaggerated, yet quite recognizable by readers as representative of their own worst moments. Through humor, Little expresses that even those situations that seem hopeless are really only another day in our lives and best confronted with laughter. "Very seldom," says Little, "is anything in life so big that we can't laugh about it later. I simply push the laughing part to the present in these situations. 'Laugh it off' is a good motto to live by!" About the book: MEXICAN BOWL FISHING: And Other Tales of Life by William Douglas Little ISBN: 978-1434382580 Publisher: AuthorHouse Date of publish: June 20, 2008 Pages: 264 S.R.P.: $15.98 About the author: William Douglas Little began his career with 8-years of late night, then morning drive radio in Eastern Missouri, where he also did stand-up comedy for more than a year. In 1997, he founded a motorcycle dealership, Unique Powersports, which has since grown to reach Top 25 National Sales status within the motorcycle industry. Little is also President of Wilkes Group, a large direct mail and promotional packaging firm with plants in St. Louis and Perryville, Missouri and a featured columnist within Motorcycle Product News Magazine - one of the top read dealer publications. Little's debut book, MEXICAN BOWL FISHING: And Other Tales of Life has received multiple 5-Star acclamations in it's first month and recounts more than thirty hilarious life stories about learning to laugh at his many misfortunes, accidents and just plain bad luck! Aug 23, 2008, 3:42pm (top)Message 99: KplatypusNew book: The Next Falling Empire, a comprehensive plan for getting America back on track. LOS ANGELES - August 22, 2008 - With the next presidential election looming, rising gas prices, the ongoing war in Iraq and countless other issues facing the American people, debut author Marc Boyajian's The Next Falling Empire could not be more timely. In this riveting work, Boyajian explores issues ranging from foreign policy and health care to immigration and education. Throughout it all the prescription is the same: a complete overhaul of the system. Boyajian is not shy in deriding the system: It may be very difficult for any of us to accept the fact that we, the people of this great nation, are heading towards becoming the fastest-falling empire in history! We have guided ourselves towards losing everything our country used to be. Many nations despise us, jobs have left us, our health care system is broken, Social Security does not provide the security it once did, our borders do not protect us, our educators cannot educate, our families have shrunk, we have no energy policy, we are ruining the environment, and our schools are infested with sex, drugs, and carelessness. We have redefined our military's job, most of us have no retirement plans, immigration is politicized, poverty has increased, democracy is no longer democracy, elections have become a joke, taxes have become confusing even to those who devise them, our prisons are overcrowded, our patriotism is in question, and our sense of sacrifice has lost its luster. All too often the market is flooded with books which only critique and fail to offer a solution; this is not the case in The Next Falling Empire. Boyajian offers an in depth and comprehensive plan to fix America's broken democracy. Innovative in his approach the book explores the ideas of health care centralization, eliminating the IRS, implementing mandatory national service for all college students, and a new approach to the war in Iraq. History has shown that empires rise and fall, but ours does not have to be next. About the book: The Next Falling Empire by Marc Boyajian ISBN: 978-1432728090 Publisher: Outskirts Press Date of publish: July 22, 2008 Pages: 136 S.R.P.: $29.95 About the author: Marc Boyajian is a Syrian-born author raised in Lebanon who moved to the United States in 1982, realizing a life-long dream to reside in the country he has loved since childhood. Currently an independent investor, Boyajian learned the value of hard work through a variety of jobs, having worked in manufacturing and as a small business owner. Her client, Paige Sorensen, is the young widow of a rich older man whose adult children hate her and are dead set on proving that she forged their father's signature on his will. He left his entire estate, including the swank Sorensen Academy, to Paige. His children had other plans. Is Paige romantically involved with the school administrator, or the fitness instructor; perhaps even her stepson? And what about the studio head who's reputed to have ties to organized crime? Treachery and foul play, dark family secrets-their handwriting will tell tales. Intrigued by this real-life soap opera, Claudia breaks one of the cardinal rules of business: Never get personally involved. But Claudia has grown attached to a troubled Sorensen student, and when faced with tragedy, she'll realize that reading between the lines can mean the difference between life and death. San Ramon, CA - August 25, 2008 - San Francisco Bay Area Author, and Common Sense Psychic, Phyllis King, will release her second book installment in her Psychic Perspective series on September 8. A Psychic Perspective, 10 Steps to More Love, Wealth, and Personal Happiness, includes a 30 day plan to jump start your life. It's a true "how-to" with no mumbo jumbo. The new book offers practical, down to earth advice in a spiritual context. Audiences will agree that they've never heard "God talk" quite like this before. What separates this book from most metaphysical publications, is its down to earth, real world advice. According to psychotherapist, Donna Morrish, even skeptics will see the value in the advice offered in this work. In her book, Phyllis explains why science has such difficulty proving the value of psychic awareness. She offers clear and specific information about how to have more in your life, and why a strong spiritual center is the key in the equation. "Phyllis tells her life story in synopsis form, as a means for demonstrating to the reader what progress can look like in the midst of transformation" said Jennifer Barton, President of Barton Communications. "She is fearless and brutally forthcoming in recounting the difficulties of her own life. Yet her story is inspiring, and shows a personal humility, although she is clearly a strong person with strong views. With no attempt to do so her book reveals a sensitivity and generosity that is undeniable." About the book: A Psychic Perspective, 10 Steps to More Love, Wealth, and Personal Happiness by Phyllis King ISBN: 978-0615-24637-6 Publisher: Cambia Publishing Date of publish: August 2008 Pages: 195 S.R.P.: $15.99 About the author: In addition to being a professional psychic for the past 29 years Phyllis has lived a very diverse life, which in her words "make her a better life coach." Those experiences include being a classically trained cellist, a professional pop singer, a marketing director for a record company, a human resource manager for a major fast food retailer, and a CEO for a non profit mental health agency. She may be psychic, but she uses common sense, and real life experience to help others achieve their own goals. Phyllis is the host of the internet radio program, The Common Sense Psychic on www.TALKZONE.com, and regularly guest hosts the personal growth radio program Seeing Beyond in San Francisco. Aug 27, 2008, 3:10pm (top)Message 122: KegsoccerThe Dune book: PAUL OF DUNE - THE DIRECT SEQUEL TO THE CLASSIC DUNE Monument CO - August 27, 2008 - After numerous internationally bestselling prequels and sequels to Frank Herbert's classic "Dune Chronicles," Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson have released their most ambitious and daring novel yet, PAUL OF DUNE, the direct sequel to DUNE (1965). At the end of the original novel, Paul Atreides is a charismatic, optimistic hero who has just overthrown the corrupt Emperor, crushed the evil Baron Harkonnen, taken the Princess Irulan for his wife, and is about to launch his faithful Fremen on a violent jihad to cement his control of the galaxy. Frank Herbert's own followup in the series, DUNE MESSIAH (1969), opens twelve years after the original book: The terrible jihad is over, countless billions have been killed, and Paul has become a tyrant -- an extremely unsympathetic character who has turned a blind eye to the corruption in his government and the awful things being done in his name. What in the world happened between those two novels to cause such a dramatic shift in one of the most popular characters in science fiction? PAUL OF DUNE is the untold story of that vital gap in Dune history, how the legend -- and the tragedy -- of Paul Muad'Dib unfolds, and how Princess Irulan becomes his biographer, propagandist, and myth-maker, willing to doctor history as she sees fit. This story is the vital "missing link" that millions of Dune fans worldwide have been waiting for. After writing eight popular and critically acclaimed prequels and sequels to the Dune Chronicles, Herbert and Anderson have created an "in-quel," a story entwined with both DUNE and DUNE MESSIAH. This novel posed a great challenge for the writers to fit such a major story into Frank Herbert's complex framework and dealing intimately with the most important character in the series. Frank Herbert's DUNE is the best-selling science fiction novel of all time, the genre's equivalent to "The Lord of the Rings." A film version and two TV miniseries have been based on the novels, and a new film is currently in the works from Paramount to be directed by Peter Berg (Hancock, Friday Night Lights); Herbert and Anderson are co- producers. In support of PAUL OF DUNE, the authors will embark on an 18-city book-signing tour. About the book: PAUL OF DUNE by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Now, she's sharing the strategies and secrets that helped her through this difficult time in How to Heal Your Heart and Soul from Divorce: A Quick, Easy-to-Read Guide to Healing. This book is a highly personal look at how Lynn overcame the pain related to her 2006 divorce. While many people going through divorce initially focus on lawyers and financial issues, unresolved psychological trauma often remains long after the legal drama is over. Feelings of guilt, uncertainty and "why me?" can derail a return to productivity and a happy outlook. But it doesn't have to be this way. Addressing readers' fears and challenges, Lynn provides a slew of tools and coping mechanisms to emerge victorious. Drawn from first-hand experience, these activities and strategies are designed to return to readers a sense of worth, promise and peace. In step- by-step fashion, Lynn shows how to translate hope into positive change in one's daily life; ways to use exercise to quiet the restless mind; how to lean on a network of friends for support during the toughest periods; and approaches for returning to work and independence. She even offers advice on dating when the time is right-and on how to avoid settling for the wrong partner. "It is my hope that I can help others emerge from the horrible pain that is felt at such a deep level during this very sad and uncertain time of your life," Lynn writes. "The road to recovery is both a long and difficult one that must be undertaken in order to go on living a more fulfilling, healed life." Through it all, this engagingly written and confiding book shows readers they aren't alone in experiencing the emotional struggles related to divorce. But by learning to let go of old patterns of behavior, bitterness, fear, and anger, Lynn offers the courage to move forward and work toward achieving desired goals in a new and hopeful chapter of life. It was also said that he was the Union's greatest general officer. "George H. Thomas," wrote author Henry M. Cist following Thomas' death, was "the grandest figure of the War of the Rebellion." Although mostly forgotten by all but the most astute Civil War historians, Thomas, a native of the South, chose to remain with the Union at the most critical juncture in the nation's short history. It was a decision which caused him to be estranged from his family and at the same time distrusted by Union generals above him. But by the end of the war, Thomas had won the admiration of his peers and the respect of his enemies. The Virginia-born Thomas was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and served in the Mexican-American War. During the War Between the States Thomas developed a reputation as a deliberate general who shunned self-promotion and who turned down advancements in positions when he did not think they were justified. Yet he won one of the Union's first victories in the West at Mill Springs, Kentucky and his determined defense at the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863 saved the Union Army from a rout and earned him the nickname "Rock of Chickamauga." The two most one-sided victories in the War-at Missionary Ridge and Nashville, Tennessee-were led by his men. In A CIVIL GENERAL authors David Stinebeck and Scannell Gill have written a cinematic novel that brings Thomas to life in his relationships with his devoted soldiers, his friends and his loyal, independent wife. The story's narrator, a young colonel who becomes his confidante, absorbs the General's wisdom, grief and commitment to carrying out the devastating battles which, Thomas believed, would both end the war and hold his country together. The novel pictures George Henry Thomas as the kind of leader American needs now, one who fights for and respects all human beings, and is determined to see American whole. Despite not achieving the same historical acclaim of some of his contemporaries, when Thomas died five years after the war ended, 10,000 mourners attended his funeral including President Grant and his cabinet. Yet not one of his relatives was present. Again Peter Talbert, aviation expert investigator, is commissioned to find out what has happened but the situation is complicated by a missing crash recorder, a courageous stewardess and by a drug baron being on the aircraft. The book will appeal to anyone who loves a good yarn Southampton, UK - Sept 2, 2008 - Tony Blackman has released a fourth book, FLIGHT TO ST ANTONY, in his series of aviation mystery crime thrillers. Once again his detailed knowledge and understanding of all aspects of aviation has enabled him to write this brilliant mystery thriller. A twin engined airliner flying from London, Gatwick to Barbados in the Caribbean has an engine failure in the middle of the Atlantic and then all communications is lost with Air Traffic Control. The aircraft tries to land at St Antony near Antigua but has to ditch at night just off the coast. Again Peter Talbert, private aviation expert, is commissioned by the insurance company to look after its interests and he arrives from Australia only to find that one crash recorder is missing and the other has problems. The situation is further complicated because there was a UK drug baron and two associates flying on the aircraft. Peter manages to interview one of the two surviving stewardesses and who tells him the whole unnerving story of the flight and the escape into dinghies. While waiting for a salvage vessel to arrive for the aircraft, they fly back to England only to hear that one of the survivors has been murdered. Peter returns and meets the Chief of Police who explains some of the problems on the island. From there he travels to San Francisco to meet the dispatcher of the fatal flight and then gets briefed on the aircraft systems by the aircraft manufacturer in Seattle. The stewardess returns to St Antony to be with Peter but she disappears as they plan to go on holiday. As he joins in the search he realises that the problem is much more than just a straightforward technical fault. Modern aircraft are incredibly safe and it takes all Peter's skill and understanding of human nature finally to convince the accident investigators and the airline and what really occurred. This fast moving book is one that no-one will want to put down, be they lovers of mysteries or aviation experts and if they haven't met Peter Talbert before they will want to read about his three other investigations. When he stopped flying he joined the Aerospace Board of Smiths Industries as Technical Operations Director developing the then new digital electronic displays and flight management systems. He was asked to join the Board of the UK Civil Aviation Authority as Technical Director where he served for five years. As a result of his intimate knowledge of modern digital systems and regulations he has been able to write authentic action packed aviation mysteries featuring, in all four books, a very human aviation expert who represents either an airline or an insurance company. I just cut and paste and this is what shows up- I really don't want to go through and fix them: Crafting Jewish: An Exquisite New Guide to Homemade Traditions Monsey, NY - Sept. 3, 2008 - Rivky Koenig is passionate about three things: family life, crafting, and preserving Jewish traditions. Not surprisingly, the upstate New York teacher, wife, and mother of five found a creative way to weave her enthusiasm into a single focus - Crafting Jewish: Fun holiday crafts and party ideas for the whole family. A delightful and visually appealing volume, Koenig's book appeals to novice and experienced crafters alike, offering more than 130 projects themed around Jewish holidays. A teacher of Literature, Language-Arts, and Social Studies, Koenig gained recognition for her tactile, hands-on approach to pedagogy, reinforcing subject matter through artistic and creative tasks. "It's well known that people learn more by doing than by hearing," she reflects. Her foray into Jewish crafting began with a stint as director of a series of crafting workshops for a popular teens' summer camp in the Catskill Mountains. "I saw kids get turned on by the idea of handmade traditional crafts they could make at home with family and friends. As we created, we'd discuss the significance of the project to Jewish values and practices. These lessons stay with them for life." Rivky Koenig's talents are captured in full display in Crafting Jewish, a concept that caught the attention of ArtScroll Mesorah Publications in Brooklyn NY, a major publisher of Jewish books for more than three decades. "Crafting Jewish is a brilliant way for families to share significant and quality time together," enthused Gedaliah Zlotowitz, Executive Vice-President of Sales and Marketing at ArtScroll Mesorah Publications. "In today's economy, everyone's looking for less expensive activities. Here's a resource that saves money and time while enriching everyone's knowledge of Jewish traditions." Crafting Jewish follows the Jewish calendar year, beginning with projects for Rosh Hashanah and concluding with crafts for the Sabbath and everyday fun. Among them are: a painted honey dish, sweet-scented sachets, a "stained-glass" flag, a mini-succah centerpiece, a wooden-block menorah, Purim puppets, a seder plate, a mezuzah, and Sabbath candlesticks. The book also suggests party ideas and quick menus for each holiday, such as: Round Raisin Challah, Breakthe-Fast Muffins, Butternut Squash Kugel, Potato Latkes with Applesauce, Falafel & Fruit Buffet, Purim Pops, a Passover Week Picnic, Frozen Cheesecake, and Koenig's Best-Ever Chocolate Chip Cookies. Woman's Day magazine plans to feature Koenig's Glowing Glass Menorah as part of a Chanukah spread. Each project in Crafting Jewish features very clear and easy-to-follow instructions, along with a full-color picture of the completed item. Koenig provides a detailed tool and ingredient list, as well as a description of all tools and decorative materials needed to recreate her ideas. The illustrations, shot by food photographer Jennifer Levy, are aesthetically rich and inspiring. Koenig notes that many of the crafts are easily adaptable to multiple holidays or everyday fun and will appeal to adults and children alike. While Crafting Jewish releases to the general market November 12, it may be pre-ordered through Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, or direct from the publisher at www.artscroll.com. Sep 4, 2008, 1:57pm (top)Message 141: KegsoccerBostick email #2: Lean & Luscious: New Kosher Cookbook Promotes Healthier Lifestyle Brooklyn, NY - Sept 4, 2008 - Five and half years ago, who knew Susie Fishbein? Today, she is a household presence in tens of thousands of kosher-loving kitchens across North America. The five books in her celebrated Kosher by Design cookbook series have sold over 300,000 copies. On November 17, she releases her sixth - Kosher by Design Lightens Up: Fabulous food for a healthier lifestyle. Fishbein's rocket ride to national recognition caught the attention of the New York Times last April, resulting in a major feature on her fifth cookbook, Passover by Design, which sold over 40,000 copies in barely two months. She's had national media exposure, including The Today Show, CNN On The Money, Sheila Bridges: Designer Living and Martha Stewart Radio. She taught at the prestigious de Gustibus School of Cooking, at the Viking Culinary Centers, and on Chosen Voyage cruises. During Thanksgiving Week she's holding cooking classes in northern Israel's chic Bayit Ba'Galil Spa, followed in January by a week of cooking demos in the Caribbean on board Kosherica Cruise Lines. Her coast-to-coast, sold-out cooking classes are booked deep into 2010. Kosher by Design Lightens Up is a shift in Fishbein's approach to bringing simple elegance into kosher home cooking. In explaining the swing toward whole grains, healthier oils, less fat and reduced sugars, she said, "Since the original Kosher by Design was published in 2003, I've certainly grown as a home cook and my kids have grown. I was looking to do better by them and so I began investigating and experimenting with healthier foods and cooking methods. Lightens Up is the homegrown result." For expert nutritional advice for Lightens Up, Fishbein recruited certified nutritionist Bonnie Taub-Dix, national spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. A frequent guest on Good Morning America and CNN, with many published articles in the New York Times, the Washington Post, WebMD, and other national publications, Taub- Dix was delighted to be part of the project. "When Susie asked me to collaborate on this book, I jumped at the challenge of combining my love of the science of nutrition with my passion for the art of cooking," she enthused. As with Fishbein's previous cookbooks, Kosher by Design Lightens Up is visually exquisite. Each of the over 140 new recipes is accompanied by a stunning photo by acclaimed food photographer John Uher, whose client list includes Godiva Chocolates and Bacardi Rum. Fishbein loves to present unique entertaining ideas and her new book doesn't disappoint, with imaginative suggestions such as an olive oil tasting and a fruit spritzer bar. While traditional kosher cooking invokes images of heavy, fatty Eastern European fare, Fishbein's cookbooks are a cosmopolitan tour-de-force. Lightens Up showcases international influences that are varied and inspired, including: Argentinean Bison Steak, Korean Beef Kim Chee Skewers, Merquez Sausage on Whole Wheat Couscous, Chicken Tikka Masala, Lebanese Salad, Mexican Citrus Salad, Thai Chicken Soup, Moroccan Spiced Vegetables, a Greek Frittata Ring, and Tangy Mediterranean Vegetables. With 21 different desserts, such as Baklava Bites and a Frozen Pumpkin Pie, Lightens Up proves that sweet and healthy can be complementary adjectives. Fishbein advises, "Most people find that if eating healthier involves a drastic change - the dreaded diet syndrome - they will not stick with it long-term. My concept is simple. Take small steps." Her own positive experience comes through in Lightens Up as she admits, "I have noticed that as I eat more whole grains and cut back on fats, sugars, and oils, I've developed new taste buds! The new flavors are refreshingly pure and satisfying." Food editors, culinary bloggers, and food media producers can preview Lightens Up at www.kosherbydesign.com/media.html . Thirty-five years ago marks the production of a little film called "The Lords of Flatbush." In his new book, The Making of The Lords of Flatbush, writer/producer/director Stephen Verona* chronicles the mini-classic film from inspiration to perspiration to final reward. It is the story of one man's dream to make an independent movie based on his life in a motorcycle gang in the 1950s. From the original idea through the pain of raising money and the rigors of independent film production to the film's instant success and sale to Columbia Pictures, topping the box office as the biggest grossing film in release, The Making of The Lords of Flatbush tells a sometimes hilarious and often dramatic, but never uneventful story. For dollar invested to dollar returned, "The Lords of Flatbush" was one of the biggest money- making films of all time. The book reveals how everyone involved went on to become legends in their fields: From Sylvester Stallone who went on to become Rocky to Henry Winkler who became the Fonz, from Richard Gere who was cast as the original lead to Bette Midler whose manager pulled her out at the last minute...from composer Joe Brooks who won an Academy Award for "You Light Up My Life" to Paul Jabara who won an Oscar for Donna Summer's "Last Dance"...add to the list the names of Perry King, Armand Assante, Ray Sharkey and Susan Blakely and the impact of this picture in Hollywood is more than evident. This film started a cultural revolution with the TV shows that it inspired. Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley and Welcome Back Kotter all found their inspiration in "Flatbush." Sometimes though, a dream is more than just the ordinary expression of the subconscious, but rather a glimpse of a person's hidden memories. Sometimes these dreams create a vision that stays with a person forever, guiding their life through passing clouds of despair and confusion. In Escape From Oblivion, author Toby Smith leads readers through a young woman's challenge to confront the dreams she once had as a child. Her dreams, good and bad are only the first step to understanding. Through her courageous journey, readers learn what matters in life is an individual's response to reality, because it generally reflects what one chooses to value. From an early age, the book's heroine, Carrie suffers from nightmares so severe and so vivid; she is able to experience sensations of her own death. Escape From Oblivion tells Carrie's story of her haunted and neglected past, as she grows to overcome her nightmares borne of a terrible secret even she doesn't know. Carrie's wisdom, even as a young girl, leads her to move forward in her life, towards academic and social success. Though, it is only after Carrie allows herself to uncover that dangerous secret, buried deep in her memory, can she finally be free to live her life's true path. A deeply moving novel, Escape From Oblivion, is a compelling story about survival, choosing to heal one's wounded soul and facing personal demons powerful enough to destroy. This fictionalized study of abuse, denial and awareness demonstrates the courage we somehow find when it is most needed and is an impressive showing of how the human spirit survives the most heinous forms of abuse. Liz Brown, a 20-year-old college graduate, is feeling aimless after completing her undergraduate work, and disillusioned with romance after discovering her boyfriend's infidelity. With no better ideas and the encouragement of faculty mentors, she enrolls in a master's program at Syracuse University in New York, embarking on an independent, soul-searching experience. Living on her own, Liz is confronted with formidable choices about sex, relationships, work and friendships. She ruminates on the meaning of life, pondering the merits and meanings of her own intelligence, struggling with inner and external conflicts. Her inherent attraction to an older student, Bob Hardwick, presents yet another conundrum as she confronts her attraction to him, wrestling with the ghosts of former, more youthful lovers: Let me say that I had always thought Hardwick to be eccentric and something of a phony - or at least a person who staged himself rather more than I liked. Compared to Johnny, he was less mainstream, more peculiar, far more histrionic, but equally as provincial. While he was brilliant, literate to the max and far more calculatingly macho than Johnny, perhaps because he was older, he was also, like Johnny, very much a boy from the suburbs of a small city, not particularly sophisticated socially. I thought he and Johnny would have had little to say to each other. He'd find Johnny too regular; Johnny would find him too weird. But they were in some ways brothers under the skin. Written in the style of a personal journal, Syracuse integrates dialogue with narrative, delving deeply into issues prevalent in the 1960s but almost more relevant today. Outspoken, literate, insecure and ambitious, Liz Brown is representative of young women on college campuses across the nation who will surely recognize themselves in the pages of Syracuse. These ordinary people; a skeptical black man, an analytical Asian woman, a blind Muslim boy, a inquisitive archaeologist and an innocent Catholic girl are hired to plan this event by a retired Jewish publisher who has been inspired by an Indian guru and a 95-year old priest. Together with the Native American Pueblo leader on whose lands the sages and wise ones will gather, they begin their quest for Ecumensus. As all of them struggle to make sense of the cryptic clues designed to help them identify and locate the master teachers of our time, they begin to glimpse some of the insights that will come to light when the wise ones and sages from all over the world finally speak as one voice. From the gathering place at Acoma Pueblo - the place that always was - they uncover the truths that have always been and devise the means by which they can be taught once again to the world. Through love, logic, re-cognition and inspired understanding, these seven ordinary people and seven special sages come to discover a new spiritual perspective that is as old as all the religions of the world and as new as tomorrow's headlines. Memoirs of a Homeless Man Escondido, CA - Sept. 16, 2008 - In his new book Who Lied and Said We Left the Garden of Eden, author Daniel Martin gives a first hand accounting of life as a homeless person who conquers the streets and turns his life around for the better. Providing a rare first-hand glimpse into the life of a homeless person, Who Lied and Said We Left the Garden of Eden is a lucid, eye-opening chronicle of author Daniel Martin's time on the mean streets of Texas and California. As a teenager, he turns to drugs for relief from his Christian fundamentalist upbringing-a tactic that plunges him into escalating burglaries to pay for his high of choice: speed. Before he's 18, Martin has become a ward of the state. Soon, he finds himself living out of a shopping cart, funding his addiction by selling his body. And that's just for starters. But there's a light at the end of this long, dark tunnel. After an array of treatment and rehabilitation programs, Martin finds the strength to escape his circumstances following a stint in Norwalk State Hospital's Cider House (made famous in Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest). How he did it-and the belief that his experience proves it's possible for anyone-lies at the crux of the book's powerful message of hope, faith and perseverance. Interspersed throughout his harrowing ordeal, Martin reveals the small courtesies that sustained him from various "angels" he met along the way. In the process, he uncovers the essential humanity that endures underneath even the most wretched of circumstances. Koenig, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Duke University Medical Center Vancouver, B.C. - Sept 17, 2008 - An estimated 22 to 23 percent of the U.S. population experiences a mental disorder in any given year, but almost half of these individuals do not seek treatment. In 1999, the U.S. Surgeon General said, "Powerful and pervasive stigma prevents people from acknowledging their own mental health problems, much less disclosing them to others." Today, in 2008, not much has changed. The shame people with mental illness feel often causes more suffering than the symptoms of their disorder. Canadian writer Marja Bergen's book A Firm Place to Stand: Finding Meaning in a Life with Bipolar Disorder dispels this lingering stigma. In this her second book about living with this painful illness that affects 3-5% of the population she speaks about her struggles in an honest and engaging way, describing what she learned about faith and life as a result of it. The author traces her forty-two years with the disease, describing her hospitalizations at the psychiatric facility Riverview Hospital and her repeated episodes of depression, mania, and psychosis. She recounts her years of searching for meaning in a life that denied her an opportunity for a career. She always knew she wanted to make a difference, to do something worthwhile. Eventually she found fulfillment in helping others who, like herself, suffer from mental illness. With the help of her church, Bergen became a pioneer in establishing faith-based support groups called Living Room. She believed in the importance of this form of Christ-centered support and created a website and manuals to help more groups start up. The movement is growing. Soon, only two years after Living Room's founding, there will be nine groups, one as far away as New Zealand. In the words of John Toews, psychiatrist and author of No Longer Alone, Mental Health and the Church, "Bergen's new book is a gift to Christians who struggle with mental health issues. This is a splendid resource to be read, not only by those who struggle, but by their friends and families, and by counselors and church leaders." About the book: A Firm Place to Stand by Marja Bergen ISBN: 978-1-897373-45-3 Publisher: Word Alive Date of publication: July 23, 2008 Pages: 220 S.R.P. $19.99 About the author: Marja Bergen has lived with bipolar disorder for over forty years. She has been helping people who suffer from mood disorders since 1999 when her first book, Riding the Roller Coaster (Northstone), was published. She has counselled and supported both individuals and groups, devoting herself to reducing the stigma attached to mental illness and helping Christians learn how to be supportive. Her articles, written from the perspective of a person who lives with bipolar disorder, have been published widely. She received a second place Fellowship of Christian Newspaper award for a First Person Article published in 2007. Marja lives in the Vancouver area, British Columbia. Sacramento, CA - Sept 22, 2008 - It took Philip Chabot 40 years to tell his story. Few alive today remember what it was like to have to carve your existence out of untamed land. In his novel, Jenford, Hendrik E. Sadi illuminates this forgotten way of life through the eyes of a simple farming family in Northwestern Connecticut. An act of neighborly concern opens the door to a distant time and culture for a young man in 1970s New England. When Ranen Sarensen visits the family's elderly neighbor, Will Jenford, the atmosphere of defeat and sorrow in the small, untidy mountain home alarms the concerned neighbor. Will sits alone in a freezing room, unable or unwilling to light the nearby woodstove to warm his bones. Ranen suspects suicidal tendencies, and engages Will in conversation. As the old woodstove is warmed up, Will opens up to Ranen and shares a history of Upland that lingers with the young man long after he leaves Will's side. As the story unfolds, Hendrik invites readers to move back with him to a time the mountain was being settled by small farming families. The Jenford saga begins at the end of the Civil War, when Will's grandfather, Clayborn Jenford, returns to Connecticut with an artificial leg and the scares of war. Searching for peace from years of destruction and the death of his fellow man, he hobbles up to his newly purchased land on Mt. Lake and starts a farm and a family. This is his redemption from the ravages of war: The dream of making a living from the land and passing it on to his sons. Years pass, and Clayborn's solitary existence expands to include a family of five. His admiration and love for his wife and children is tempered with high expectations of the sacrifice and dedication that life on a farm demands. Out of his three sons and one daughter, only May Jenford, Will's mother, proves her merit as a worthy descendent of Clayborn. Long after Clayborn's sons have abandoned the farm to follow their own individual dreams of farming elsewhere, May remains and eventually raises Will and his two brothers as stalwart of the land in Upland, and accepts her daughter's capricious restlessness to eventually escape to the city. But the strong remain. And this is their story of a relationship that weaves and develops in the family and among the neighbors living in a long forgotten time on Mt. Lake. And throughout the telling of it, Sadi evokes a gentle reverence for the past, when hard work and responsibility and deep seated spirituality of the land nurtured a satisfaction rarely experienced today. Craig Reed's latest global thriller, DNA, is a savage and brutal ride, blending science, history, mythology, and religion into a whip-fast and smart story. Riveting and breathlessly paced, it's a story that begs to be read in one sitting." -James Rollins, N.Y. Times bestselling author of The Last Oracle "DNA is an enlightening and terrifying journey that offers a unique answer to the most controversial argument of our time: Intelligent Design or Darwin's Evolution? Based on five years of solid research, DNA is a riveting story that will compel you to read the other books in the series." -Malcolm Boyes of Entertainment Tonight San Jose, CA - Sep 23, 2008 - DNA by W. Craig Reed (Rain Publishing, September 2008) will plunge readers into the most controversial topic of our time: Intelligent Design vs. Darwin's Evolution. Based on six years of genetic, historical and psychological research, DNA will take readers on an intense journey with a genetic question that, once answered, could unleash an equal measure of hope and horror for us all. Just after the Gulf War, Ensign George Anders parachutes into Iraq with a Navy SEAL team to hunt down Fahkir Kaseem-an impassioned fanatic bent on continuing his own private war against the West. After finding evidence that Kaseem has commandeered a group of Russian scientists and bio-weapon production equipment, George is thrust into a battle between two opposing forces that each have their own agenda for the future of mankind, and have manipulated world events for centuries to fulfill their plans. Russian bio-scientist Annelia Salenski is taken captive by Kaseem-who plans to exploit her expertise in genetics. She soon discovers Kaseem's true agenda-one that involves using a terrifying technology developed by the Soviets during the Cold War, a technology that could alter the definition of what it means to be human. Racing against time to rescue Annelia and prevent Kaseem from unleashing the most horrific genetic weapon imaginable, George comes face to face with his true identity and unravels an astonishing truth behind a discovery made by an eighteenth century scientist-a man that Voltaire once claimed "knows everything and never dies." Through the words and formulas recorded by this enigma from the past, George discovers the answer to the most important argument since the dawn of man: Intelligent Design or Darwin's Evolution? And the proof is hidden in the twisting turning bundle of phosphate atoms that determine the destiny of life. With a unique angle and heavily researched story, DNA will appeal to fans of Dan Brown's DaVinci Code who are seeking to unlock the mysteries of our complex world. DNA will shock readers and bring light to spiritual truths. About the book: DNA by W. I love coming home to new books! It looks like this one came from the author. I don't remember requesting it (LOL, I think my subconscious is trying to sabotage my efforts to do something other than read and review books!) but it looks good. This story takes children through the metaphorical journey of a caterpillar as it evolves into a butterfly. During the process, the caterpillar (Lady Flatterley) faces some of the fears that plague children and adults alike - the fear of failure and the fear of change. Wagner chooses to use one of "God's little miracles in nature" - the caterpillar - to illustrate her message in a way that children can readily understand. She wants them to know that even though they may be shy or fearful of change, nothing should stand in the way of their dreams. The fear of failure is often a roadblock preventing people from achieving their goals, and Wagner wants children to learn at an early age to overcome that fear. Change is difficult, but Lady Flatterley gently gives her young audience the message that the effort is worth it. Lady Flatterley begins her journey of transformation by building a cocoon. This starts a chain of events in her life that will eventually allow her dream of becoming a butterfly to come true - which was God's plan all along. Now you have seen How butterflies are made Caterpillar to cocoon, then to butterfly 'Tis God's loving way About the book: Lady Flatterley by Linda Wagner ISBN: 978-1432732332 Publisher: Outskirts Press Date of publish: Sept 30, 2008 Pages: 41 S.R.P.: $22.95 About the author: Linda Wagner, RN has been a registered nurse for 29 years and is in the process of writing other books. Oct 6, 2008, 12:39pm (top)Message 201: Jacey25I e-mailed to request an offered YA novel today and was asked if I would accept a PDF copy instead. I know I don't want a PDF copy- I'm not good at reading a lot on a computer screen and the book is 256 pages but feel rude saying no.... thoughts? Oct 6, 2008, 12:52pm (top)Message 202: PhoenixTerranI requested the same book and was also offered a pdf. Here was my response: "Unfortunately, I do not read large amounts of digital text very well and I do not have access to a printer in order to print an entire book from pdf. If a hard copy is unavailable, I understand--I'll just have to keep an eye out for it at my library. Thank you for your time and consideration, Cheers!" Oct 6, 2008, 12:53pm (top)Message 203: PhoenixTerranOh, and yes. Let's start a new Bostick Thread. Good call ThePam! Oct 6, 2008, 12:55pm (top)Message 204: Jacey25Oh, that's fantastic! It looks like the authors are just starting out. I've just read one so far, but likely wouldn't have bought it for myself. May 19, 2009, 4:17pm (top)Message 207: lauranavI received one within a week of responding to the email. It's the 3rd in a trilogy and the first two were in our local library so she isn't a brand new author. Oct 9, 2009, 12:23pm (top)Message 208: StappsI don't have much of a problem with them. One of the books they emailed me about I asked for a review copy of, and I got it. I know the author, Kevin J Anderson, to be a well known author, as he was one of the authors who wrote the Dune series. I've not always wanted the books they've emailed me about, but I don't mind receiving them. Press releases on books I may be interested in isn't spam in my opinion, they're welcome. I only started getting emails from Bostick about... 6 months ago, and only last month did I finally find a few that I was semi-interested in. So I replied, but have not received any email back nor have I found the books in my mail box.
