Mrs. Weasley's Knitting Corner was getting longish, and there are a lot of us here who do non-knitting crafts I thought it would be fun to share. After two months of work, I finished this this weekend. (My reading suffered quite a lot, but it was worth it!)

The thing is, I have too much cross-stitch at home already, so I'm putting this up for grabs. If anyone likes it, post a note on my profile and I'll send it out to you on Friday!

Oct 27, 2008, 10:08am (top)Message 2: Ms_Bella

All I see is a red x Bib!! It is beautiful lol:)

Oct 27, 2008, 10:09am (top)Message 3: biblioholic29

Hmmm...it's showing up for me, anyone else having a problem?

Oct 27, 2008, 10:28am (top)Message 4: Mandy2

Oct 27, 2008, 10:29am (top)Message 5: Mandy2

I don't even see a red x -- just a blank spot between the first and second paragraphs of Bib's post.

Oct 27, 2008, 10:57am (top)Message 7: Ms_Bella

Aww bib that really is beautiful!

Oct 27, 2008, 11:28am (top)Message 8: biblioholic29

Thanks Bella!

Okay, I'm not sure what the problem is, because I did the same thing I always do, but here's a link for anyone who can't see it on the thread!

:o) I see a blank space, unless you want me to see something...Is this like the Emperor's New Clothes? Wow! What wonderful colors! This is awesome!

Oct 27, 2008, 12:09pm (top)Message 11: pollysmith

ooo Its beautiful! I had this same thought at work last night that we needed a thread for other crafts we do! I have started a mini guilt in christmas colors. I also have several needlework projects to work on!

Oct 27, 2008, 12:34pm (top)Message 12: biblioholic29

It's been claimed! I hope you'll post some of your work soon Polly! I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's handiwork!

Oct 27, 2008, 12:49pm (top)Message 13: Kerian

That looks absolutely beautiful bib! Fantastic job! :)

I used to cross stitch but it's been years.

Oct 27, 2008, 1:30pm (top)Message 14: jugglingpaynes

OK, I had to open this thread in Explorer to see the x and then look up the properties and copy and paste, but I finally saw it! It's beautiful, bib! Nice job!

Oct 27, 2008, 3:34pm (top)Message 15: lefty33

Bib, it's gorgeous! When you said you liked complicated patterns, this is way beyond what I was picturing. Absolutely stunning.

Oct 27, 2008, 5:52pm (top)Message 16: catbastet

Bib, is cross-stitching embroidery? I can't remember if there is a difference between the two. The pattern you did is beautiful!
This year I am trying to get all my Christmas presents done before the last minute. So far, I have knitted: A hat, a stuffed owl, a pair of wrist warmers, and I am working on a pair of slippers for JP. Hopefully my hands won't fall off before I've finished everything. ;)

Oct 27, 2008, 6:18pm (top)Message 17: Marensr

My goodness bib that looks like a lot of work. Lovely!

Oct 27, 2008, 9:27pm (top)Message 18: picolina

Wow Bib, that is amazing! Very lovely, and it does look like a lot of work. How long did it take you to do it?

Oct 28, 2008, 9:05am (top)Message 19: biblioholic29

Thanks everybody!

#16: They're both needle arts, but I think cross-stitching is a little more structured. They use different cloth and while some of the stitches are the same, they're used in different ways. I think the patterns are written differently too. The embroidery I've seen has the pattern printed on the cloth and a color chart whereas counted cross-stitch is a blank stretch of Aida cloth and you have to count your stitches using the provided pattern. I know there are others here who embroider, they may be able to elaborate.

#18: It took about two months of working on it pretty much every night after work (4-8:30ish) and my free weekends.

I have a few unfinished ones that I found when I was unpacking I'll start working on soon.

Oct 28, 2008, 10:02pm (top)Message 20: lefty33

#16/19 Bib did a good job of explaining the embroidery/cross stitch difference. Though I've never used a pattern to do embroidery, I do it freehand for lettering and embellishments. For example, I embroider my quilt labels by hand with my initials in a JRRT-inspired fashion and the year.

Oct 30, 2008, 7:36pm (top)Message 21: catbastet

19- Thanks for explaining! I was confused because I do some embroidery, and one of the stitches is called a cross-stitch. I do embroidery freehand, like lefty, sometimes. I like drawing a design and putting it on the cloth also. Last year I drew and embroidered a dragon that I made into a pillow for my brother.

20- Ooh! I like that, lefty! It's so nice!

Nov 13, 2008, 6:25pm (top)Message 22: lefty33

Surprise! Socks! This is a woven pattern. I wanted a simple texture-type stitch so that the focus was the gorgeous yarn. I love the yarn! The socks are big on me. The person they are for has much longer feet than I do.

Nov 13, 2008, 6:27pm (top)Message 23: pollysmith

gorgeous! They look soft and warm too!

Nov 13, 2008, 6:51pm (top)Message 24: jugglingpaynes

Oh, I like that color combination. I need to find that yarn and force ask cat to make me a sweater with it.

Nov 13, 2008, 6:56pm (top)Message 25: littlegeek

Yay! Everyone in HE is so talented.

Nov 13, 2008, 7:10pm (top)Message 26: foggidawn

I'd post pics of the little things I've been embroidering lately, except that whoever I get in the gift exchange is likely to get one as part of their gift! ;-)

Nov 13, 2008, 10:07pm (top)Message 27: lefty33

Foggi, at least take pictures so you can post them after the exchange!

JP, it's called jingleberry and I got it at theloopyewe.com. It's from the Araucania collection under ranco multi. I hope cat is agreeable! (or enslave-able)

#25 it's so fun to see what everyone does! When are you going to post pics of your work? ;)

Nov 13, 2008, 10:09pm (top)Message 28: pollysmith

soooooooon.....

Nov 13, 2008, 11:47pm (top)Message 29: jugglingpaynes

Thank you lefty. It took me a moment to remember what thread I was on and to decipher your knitter language, but I got it. :o)
Of course, now I have John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt running through my head. *wanders off humming*

Nov 13, 2008, 11:56pm (top)Message 30: Kerian

More beautiful socks! I love the colors. Also, your labels look fantastic, lefty! :)

All the craftiness makes me want to sew again. I think I'm going to make book covers. I've made them before and would post a picture but I gave them all away as Christmas gifts. It's the same story for jewelry I make.

Message edited by its author, Nov 13, 2008, 11:57pm.

Nov 14, 2008, 8:32am (top)Message 31: lefty33

#29 jp, lol sorry to confuse! And perhaps more sorry to have gotten that particular song in your head. I hope you weren't singing it in your sleep!

#30 K, thanks! You should sew again! What other things have you made?

Hmm, that was strange. I accidentally pushed "ctrl" and the "+/=" key and it made everything get bigger. I pushed it again and it got even bigger. The page was up to about a size 18 font and I was feeling a bit like Alice when she was in the pool of tears (minus the threat of drowning) before I figured out that "ctrl" and "-" reduced the size. Is that a normal keyboard shortcut?

Nov 14, 2008, 9:41am (top)Message 32: jugglingpaynes

That is so neat! *starts altering font size and thinks of a particular thread...*

Nov 14, 2008, 10:20am (top)Message 33: littlegeek

Last night was my knitting group, and my friend Sara taught us to felt in two ways. We learned needle felting and basic wet felting.

So much fun.

I'm still working on the lace stole. I'm about half way around the edging so I hope to actually finish it one fine day. ;-)

I have my next lace project all picked out. It's this.

Nov 14, 2008, 10:42am (top)Message 34: Mandy2

You're going to make that LG?? That is beautiful

Nov 14, 2008, 11:39am (top)Message 35: Ms_Bella

Oh my goodness LG your are talented... I would never be able to do anything like that...

Nov 14, 2008, 12:06pm (top)Message 36: littlegeek

I've been knitting for over 20 years so I should hope I would have gained some mastery by that time. anyway, it's easier than it looks. ;-)

I've got this amazing alpaca laceweight yarn to make it with, too. And the pattern has no edging. Yay.

Nov 14, 2008, 7:32pm (top)Message 37: Kerian

#31 lefty:
I started making a bag a long time ago. Technically it was finished, but I never added on the things I'd bought for it so I count it as an incomplete project. Otherwise, I only ever mae a tiny pillow: the first thing I sewed. (I've only sewn by hand.)
KIK! I just tried it on my keyboard and started panicking...'She says how to get it back, right???' ;)

Very impressive, LG. Good luck, though I'm sure you don't need it. :)

Nov 15, 2008, 9:24am (top)Message 38: compskibook

I've been felting like crazy to make my Christmas gifts. I may give one to my elfster person, so I will wait until then to post a picture.

33: LG: for the wet felting do you wash the wool in hot water and then dry on hot? That is what I have been doing. It sometimes takes two tries, but it is so fun to see the results.

Nov 15, 2008, 1:41pm (top)Message 39: littlegeek

#38 It was not knitted felt, which I have done before, but wet felting of roving. It involves a lot of use of a rolling pin.

When I felt knitted stuff, I use hot water in the wash, take it out several times during the rinse cycle until it's the right size, then rinse in cold water and air dry.

Do you actually put it in the dryer? Never heard of that.

Nov 17, 2008, 8:39am (top)Message 40: biblioholic29

So this weekend I had a nasty cold (still have actually, but I came to work, because they were all nice enough to share with me last week, I thought I'd return the favor!) so I "finished" my first knitting project. I had taken a long break while I was doing the project in #1 and had screwed up pretty bad so I had to start all over. It pretty much means I was only able to make about a three foot scarf. It'll work if I tuck it into my coat, so I'm keeping this one for me. Mostly I'm just glad to know that I can finish one. My sister now wants me to make a blanket for my nephew, as he's become a bit Linus-y with his knitted blanket and it's too long for him to not trip all over. Holly's hoping I can knit him a smaller version that he can carry around all he wants.

Nov 17, 2008, 8:53am (top)Message 41: lefty33

Congrats on finishing your scarf, bib! I haven't done any blankets yet. I'm not that interested in knitting a blanket since I quilt.

Since there are lots of crafty HEers, I thought I'd share this. The local quilter's guild does this charity every year for the humane society -- we all take 1/2, 3/4 or 1 yard cuts of fabric and sew them around the edges like a pillowcase. Then we stuff them with quilt leftovers, batting, and other fabric or yarn scraps and sew them shut. The pillows go to the humane society to put in the pens with the animals and all those scraps get a good use instead of going straight to the dumpster! I am just really excited about it, so I had to share. I wish I had though of this myself years ago!

Nov 17, 2008, 2:37pm (top)Message 42: catbastet

40- Congrats on finishing the scarf, bib!

41- That is cool, lefty! What a great way to use up all those scraps!

Nov 17, 2008, 10:03pm (top)Message 43: Always_Reading

That's amazing Lefty!!! I should see if I can get something like that started around here...

Oh my gosh, these pictures are all fantastic!!! I hope to see more, these look like skilled pieces of art to be framed and put in the louve! ;) But they're still so cool!!!

My mom's the only one of all my family that can knit well, and all I know is that she's an avid Stephanie Pearl fan (I think that's the name). She's entering in some sock pattern contest with plaid knitted socks! Hopefully she can get my vest done in time for Christmas, but I think all she has to do is half the front. It's the buttons that take forever to pick out. You knitters can probably sympathize.

Keep the projects going, they're fantastic!!

Nov 19, 2008, 5:25pm (top)Message 44: Marensr

Hooray bib!

I did put one felted project in the dryer LG. It was because the new washing machines are meant to be gentle on clothes and it wasn't working. I even boiled it in a pot on the stove before trying the dryer.

I have been longing to try needle felting. Your lace pattern looks funl. Like peacock feathers.

Is it wrong that I want to quit work and stay home and knit and make jewelry. I think I would be very poor.

I need to get some recent project pix uploaded but I always seem to be behind.

Nov 19, 2008, 6:00pm (top)Message 45: lefty33

Here are this week's socks. The pattern is made up of little parallelograms, if the pictures aren't clear enough. In the background is the quilt I'm working on right now. I'm still quilting it, which is why there are pins everywhere.

We want to see your pictures, mar! Maybe we can get enough HEers to buy our stuff that we can retire early. ;) I was at a quilter's guild yesterday and some of the women were talking about how much they've gotten done since retiring. I was very jealous.

Nov 19, 2008, 9:19pm (top)Message 46: compskibook

Lefty, you are amazing!

Nov 19, 2008, 9:43pm (top)Message 47: littlegeek

lefty, those are awesome!

Nov 19, 2008, 11:17pm (top)Message 48: kirbyowns

You are amazingly awesome! I wished I liked to wear socks.

Nov 20, 2008, 7:42pm (top)Message 49: pollysmith

wow! You are so quick! love the socks!

Nov 20, 2008, 9:24pm (top)Message 50: Kerian

I like that we see them on two threads. I get confused and think, 'What happened to that other pair?' Hee hee. ;)

Nov 20, 2008, 9:48pm (top)Message 51: lefty33

lol -- sorry, K. I switched threads since the other one was getting photo-intensive and, as bib said, longish.

kirby, are you sure you wouldn't like wearing a pair of lightweight eyelet socks that are more airy and less constricting than normal ones?

Thanks for all the encouragement, everyone. You guys are the best! Post photos of your stuff too so I don't feel like this has become "lefty's sock collection." ;)

Nov 20, 2008, 10:43pm (top)Message 52: catbastet

45- Those socks are so cool, lefty!

I finished most all of my Christmas presents, so I have started work on a big project. I am knitting a sweater for myself! It's my first time knitting a sweater, so I'm hoping it goes well. :)

Nov 20, 2008, 11:11pm (top)Message 53: Kerian

#51 lefty:
You have a collection of only left socks? ;)

#52 cat:
Good luck on your sweater, cat! :)

Nov 20, 2008, 11:20pm (top)Message 54: Always_Reading

Do your swatches carefully!
Good luck! (and be sure to post lots of pics!)

Nov 21, 2008, 5:50am (top)Message 55: lefty33

#52 Thank's cat! Good luck on your sweater! Do you have the yarn and pattern picked out? I haven't tried a sweater -- they are so much bigger, it would definitely take me longer than a week to finish one.

#53 Well, K, the left side is the best side.

Nov 21, 2008, 9:23am (top)Message 56: jugglingpaynes

#55- She said she's using a pattern from Charmed Knits because they had a nice simple pattern, but she is changing it a little.

And she has knitted a tank top before, but she won't count that because it didn't have sleeves.

Nov 21, 2008, 6:05pm (top)Message 57: lefty33

So a friend has wanted me to cover this silly little chair for her niece to use. The niece is 1. I've been putting it off for quite some time, but at last, it is finished! It was really annoying, which is why I was putting it off.

Nov 21, 2008, 7:55pm (top)Message 58: catbastet

Aw, that's cute! Too bad it was so annoying, but at least it turned out great! :)

55- I picked out a nice dark green yarn and a blue yarn (I managed to get the yarn on sale too!).

Nov 25, 2008, 2:31pm (top)Message 59: Marensr

Oh cat I am excited to see your first sweater. That is always a big step. I can't wait to see it.

I was such a backward knitter as child (not literally) but I didn't finish a single project until I knit my first sweater. I needed to have a big project to motivate me.

Then I went backwards it wasn't until a few years ago that I started knitting hats and lacy scarves when I started designing them myself. I think I like making things more complicated.

Nov 25, 2008, 4:08pm (top)Message 60: Kerian

#55 lefty:
Of course! When was it ever a question? ;)

#56 --> What a cute chair!

I was thinking of these threads this weekend when I bought some fingerless mittens. I had never seen any in a store before. Cat's pair was the only ones I'd seen.

Nov 25, 2008, 4:20pm (top)Message 61: lefty33

I just know fingerless gloves will be my next addiction. I have plans to make myself a pair with the flap that comes over the fingers. This flap can be put up to cover your fingers like normal mittens or down to give you use of your fingers.

Cat, great color choices! You can't go wrong with deep greens and blues! Just curious, are you on Ravelry?

LG, how interesting that a big project motivated you to finish something! I have no ambition to make a sweater exactly because it is such a big project.

Nov 25, 2008, 4:24pm (top)Message 62: littlegeek

I will finish the stole tonight. Yay! But I have a small matter of a pair of sox to make before I start the new shawl. (Can anyone guess who for?????)

I can bang out a pair of sox over the long weekend, tho.

Nov 25, 2008, 7:32pm (top)Message 63: catbastet

59- I almost always change a pattern a little to suit my purposes. I'm making the sweater in the pattern I'm using a bit longer in the body, and I'm deciding whether I want to change the neck.

61- Ooh, I've seen patterns for those types of fingerless gloves, lefty.
I'm not on Ravelry, but I have heard of it. I subscribe to a free online knitting magazine called knitty. I considered joining Ravelry, but I probably spend to much time on the computer as it is. ;) Maybe some day...

Nov 25, 2008, 8:43pm (top)Message 64: MrAndrew

I love fingerless gloves. They're so hobo-ey.

EEEK! I've stumbled into a craft thread! Must reaffirm manliness.*gets out power tools*

Nov 25, 2008, 11:22pm (top)Message 65: Marensr

63 cat changing the pattern is how it starts. Next you'll be designing them yourself. I love that about knitting you can tinker to make things fit properly or add some detail you want.

64 ah but you did use the word hobo-ey which is sort of masculine-ish perhaps.

Nov 26, 2008, 12:16am (top)Message 66: Espeon200

#64 *Imagines Mr.A knitting socks using power tools.*

Nov 26, 2008, 12:34am (top)Message 67: jugglingpaynes

What a beautiful sweater MrA! Did you use a .75 mm drill bit for that?

Nov 26, 2008, 1:46am (top)Message 68: MsDonna

I'll have to post a pic of the sample tray Mr A. made for my sample candles.

Nov 26, 2008, 6:34am (top)Message 69: lefty33

#64/66/67 kik!

#65 re: #63, yep, tinkering is how it starts!

#68 MsD, wait, so MrA is crafty and helpful and useful? His secret is out! ;)

Nov 26, 2008, 11:51am (top)Message 70: littlegeek

Patterns are more a set of guidelines, really.

Nov 26, 2008, 4:18pm (top)Message 71: catbastet

Yeah, I tend to take away and add to patterns no matter what. And I have designed some things, like the bag I knitted for myself. I've also designed some small things. :)

LOL MrA!

Nov 26, 2008, 8:03pm (top)Message 72: kirbyowns

I'm working on something for my person from Elfster. But I can't tell you what, or for who!

Nov 26, 2008, 8:28pm (top)Message 73: Kerian

A lot of people want handmade gifts. I've wondered if my person wants anything handmade but don't want to give away that I don't knit. I sew things and make jewelry. I can't make socks, or not yet. I want to learn how! I think that would take too long for Secret Santa. ;)

Nov 26, 2008, 9:24pm (top)Message 74: littlegeek

My person is getting hand knit something. I finished the stole!!! OMG! Once I pin it down to block it, I will take a picture.

Nov 26, 2008, 9:30pm (top)Message 75: jugglingpaynes

You knit a stole for someone? Let me guess. Espy or MrA, right?

Nov 27, 2008, 1:12pm (top)Message 76: littlegeek

No, sorry, the stole is for me. My secret santa person will be well taken care of, tho.

Dec 2, 2008, 10:13pm (top)Message 77: lefty33

A couple more pairs of socks! The black ones are for a boy, therefore do not fit me. But I pretended for the picture. I like the red ones a lot -- they are alpaca, so very soft!

Dec 2, 2008, 10:17pm (top)Message 78: kirbyowns

I must say that I'm coming along nicely on my secret gift for my secret santa person. I even used it today in a reading lesson. Dual purposes.

Dec 3, 2008, 12:39am (top)Message 79: Kerian

#77 lefty,
One of my aunts used to have alpaca llamas. :)

Dec 3, 2008, 3:55pm (top)Message 80: pollysmith

K? one of your aunts had a pack of llama's?

Dec 3, 2008, 3:59pm (top)Message 81: Kerian

I wouldn't call it a pack, but yes, she had several. They live a good two plus hours away and used to have a barn and a pasture. I didn't like visiting there much. ;) My cousins used to tease and call me 'city girl.'

Dec 3, 2008, 4:01pm (top)Message 82: pollysmith

okay, you missed the pun, alpaca=a pack of? Oh well, I can do better.

Dec 3, 2008, 4:07pm (top)Message 83: Kerian

Sorry! I'm slow sometimes. I bet others would have gotten it.

Dec 3, 2008, 4:09pm (top)Message 84: pollysmith

anyway I've heard alpacas are easy to care for animals

Dec 3, 2008, 5:40pm (top)Message 85: lefty33

And their long, soft fur can be spun into great yarn! I'm actually considering getting alpacas eventually. I've been teaching myself to spin and I just love the idea of making clothes completely without a manufacturer involved. It's like clothes from scratch!

I think they are easy to care for too, Polly.

Dec 3, 2008, 6:44pm (top)Message 86: LadyN

Maaaaaaaan I'm misreading a LOT tonight. I just thought K's message #81 read "They live a good two plus hours." That made me think "Wow, llamas have a much shorter life expectancy than I originally thought"...

I need some sleep....

Dec 4, 2008, 8:36am (top)Message 87: biblioholic29

#86 ROFL! That's hilarious. Totally something I could see myself doing!

Dec 4, 2008, 10:30am (top)Message 88: readafew

I just finished these the other night.

Dec 4, 2008, 10:39am (top)Message 89: Mandy2

OMG those are fantastic! You made those! WOW, I'm so untalented.

Dec 4, 2008, 11:42am (top)Message 90: lefty33

Those are so awesome I feel compelled to ask whether you really made them or if you're teasing! They're adorable! Are they Christmas presents?

Dec 4, 2008, 11:46am (top)Message 91: readafew

thanks guys, yes I really made them. All the way from cutting down the tree for the wood. These 3 are Christmas presents but I plan to make more to sell on my Etsy store.

Dec 4, 2008, 2:29pm (top)Message 92: Kerian

#86 lefty:
KIK! I suppose I could have changed my wording to be more direct. ;)

#88 readafew:
Those are adorable! Great work! :)

Dec 4, 2008, 3:47pm (top)Message 93: jugglingpaynes

readafew, make sure you let us know where your Etsy store is!

Dec 4, 2008, 3:54pm (top)Message 94: readafew

It is listed in my 'Also on'. But to be easy it's http://makeafew.etsy.com
Right now I only have 2 chess boards on there. Hoping to have more things by Christmas.

I was thinking the same thing. I've been browsing it and see very nice things there but if there were a way to let HE friends profit, I would rather buy from them.

Dec 4, 2008, 3:58pm (top)Message 96: jugglingpaynes

The chessboards are nice, but I love the pull toys!

My sister makes jewelery and has a shop here http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=647.... take a look. She's much better at art than I am. She is also making my banner for my shop for me so when you see it you'll know who made it.

I hope to have at least one of the pull toys up by the end of the month.

I've been trying to get stuff together for an Etsy store for months, but I keep giving away everything I could put on there! I will have to stop being charitable. No more season for giving for me. Bah-humbug!

It is good to know HEers' Etsy stores though. I would definitely look at their stores before a random person's. Anyone else have a store?

Dec 4, 2008, 4:57pm (top)Message 99: readafew

98 > I hear you, I made those two chess boards specifically for Etsy, everything else I've made this fall is turned into Christmas presents.

Is there a list of who all has Etsy shops here?

Dec 4, 2008, 7:50pm (top)Message 100: pollysmith

Oh those pull toys are so cute!

Dec 5, 2008, 6:40am (top)Message 101: LadyN

readafew - you're so clever! those are just gorgeous!

Dec 5, 2008, 11:06am (top)Message 102: readafew

Thanks, I'm glad people like them. 2 of them will be going to homes this weekend.

Dec 5, 2008, 6:59pm (top)Message 103: catbastet

I love those pull toys, readafew! They are so beautiful!

Dec 5, 2008, 7:00pm (top)Message 104: pollysmith

How much do they sell for?

Dec 6, 2008, 9:34am (top)Message 105: readafew

not sure, haven't tried to sell any of them yet. That was my first batch and they are all presents. However I have one more of that style which is almost complete and I would like to get somewhere around $25-$30 dollars for it when I'm done. Then I'm changing the assembly design a little bit to 'improve' things and those I'd like to see over the $30 mark, though in reality I think (with time & materials) they should be closer to $50. I'll be looking at pull toys closer to get an idea of what things are going for on Etsy before I really set a price.

So Polly are you still interested?

What would any of you be willing to pay for one? Honestly curious. If people think they're worth $10 then it's not worth my time to continue outside of presents.

Dec 6, 2008, 11:18am (top)Message 106: biblioholic29

Hmmm....interesting question. I'd need to know a bit more about the changes. How much labor goes in to them, finishing, painting, etc. The ones you have above I'd definitely spend $25, maybe $30, depending on comparable prices. My nephew would love a "ga ga" he could walk around the house, which definitely makes things worth paying for.

Dec 6, 2008, 11:30am (top)Message 107: Mandy2

I'm in agreement with bib, espicially since it's the same nephew that's worth spending money on.

Dec 6, 2008, 11:52am (top)Message 108: jugglingpaynes

I don't think your prices are unreasonable readafew. I get a lot of toy catalogs with handmade toys and something like yours probably would sell for $50. Do some research. I think your toys would fit with the style of Hearthsong's merchandise. If you were worried about them selling, I would lower it to $40, but considering cr*p plastic toys that are selling for $50+ and break after a week or two, I would rather spend my money on something timeless that will last. IMHO

Suggestion: Market it as a "sturdy heirloom toy." It's good to know your buzzwords.

Dec 6, 2008, 5:52pm (top)Message 109: pollysmith

I was just curious Readafew, But I think 25-30 dollars for a handcrafted toy is not at all to much. Just about right

Dec 6, 2008, 11:51pm (top)Message 110: readafew

bib > The changes I plan to make are mostly in how the joints are connected making them easier and sturdier allowing a 'cleaner' look. Otherwise visually they should look very similar.

I'm glad to see others are agreeing with my first thoughts on the price range. I'll do some more research before actually pricing them but I feel a little better. BTW i might be willing to give an HE discount on future sales when I actually get more things up. The chess boards are already at rock bottom prices right now.

JP > Good suggestion, I'll definitely keep that in mind!

Dec 7, 2008, 1:52am (top)Message 111: Marensr

readafew those are great! By all means don't sell yourself short. There is a lot of work and materials there. Think about a fair hourly rate for your work and then consider your price accordingly.

I would be curious to hear about you experiences with etsy. I have purchased things on etsy have thought of putting items on etsy but my sister has convinced me to wait and try and put any jewelry I make on a webiste we hope to launch in February for our knit patterns. Etsy seems easier but my sister is persuasive.

Dec 7, 2008, 8:13am (top)Message 112: readafew

111 > I'll certainly let you know how things go. It's a little early yet for me and I do only have 2 items out there sooo, only time will tell.

KIK! I looked at the screen waiting for a picture to load. Finally I read on. That is sneaky, kirby. ;)

I'm up to a few things as well. I just had to retype my post because I near gave a detail away. Yikes!

Dec 9, 2008, 9:06pm (top)Message 115: littlegeek

readafew, those are awesome!

Dec 10, 2008, 9:07am (top)Message 116: readafew

Thanks littlegeek!

I'm hoping to have one for sale on Etsy by this weekend, so let people know! I hope to get more up quicker so there are a few things to look at.

Dec 14, 2008, 3:51pm (top)Message 117: lefty33

These socks are for a coworker. She was saying recently how she wanted a diamond, so I made her diamond-patterned socks. Okay, maybe she meant the kind of diamonds you find on a ring that sparkles and goes on the left ring-finger, but close enough. ;)

Dec 14, 2008, 5:46pm (top)Message 118: catbastet

Those are nice, Lefty! The pattern almost looks like crisscrossed sandal straps! The color is pretty too. :)

Dec 14, 2008, 9:39pm (top)Message 119: pollysmith

yes I love that color! Lefty you are so talented!

Dec 14, 2008, 10:12pm (top)Message 120: mindylou182

lol. Missy you are ridiculous. But I love you =)
Thanks for getting me addicted to knitting =)

Dec 14, 2008, 10:37pm (top)Message 121: Kerian

Those are pretty, lefty! I'm really going to miss seeing all your new socks after the holidays.

Dec 15, 2008, 8:55am (top)Message 122: biblioholic29

I'm going to be starting on the blanket for my nephew tonight. I had to do some serious math last night to figure out how many stitches I should cast on to make the pattern I'm using the size I want. The whole point of making the blanket is so he'll have one he can drag around the house Linus-style without tripping over it, which means it can't be any bigger than 2 1/2 feet square. This will be my first attempt at modifying a pattern in any way, with me luck!

Dec 15, 2008, 8:56am (top)Message 123: pollysmith

good luck Bib, keep us posted!

Dec 15, 2008, 9:34am (top)Message 124: lefty33

#118 Cat, Thanks! You're right, it does look like sandal straps!

Thanks, Polly and K! After Christmas I'll still be making stuff, just not on a deadline. First on the list is to finish my bed quilt!

#120 Mindy, yeah, it was really hard to talk you into knitting. ;)

#122 Bib, Best of luck! You know you have a huge support group here if you get stuck or have questions!

Dec 15, 2008, 10:14am (top)Message 125: readafew

lefty33 > you make a lot of cool socks. I think my wife would love a pair! What would you charge for a pair like the ones in the last pic?

Dec 15, 2008, 11:21am (top)Message 126: lefty33

Readafew, I haven't ever tried to sell a pair before. Would you want the same kind of yarn? Actually, I have several questions -- I'll just send you a message.

Dec 15, 2008, 11:36am (top)Message 127: littlegeek

I MISS KNITTING!!!!!!

I can knit on big needles for row or two, but then my wrist gives out. whinge, whinge...i'm hating life.

nice sox, as always, lefty!

Dec 15, 2008, 11:55am (top)Message 128: lefty33

:( Poor LG! I hope you get better enough to knit soon! Are you still in a cast and everything?

Dec 15, 2008, 12:57pm (top)Message 129: littlegeek

I'll be in the cast for at least another 2 to 4 weeks.

I get xrayed again tomorrow so i'll know more then.

Dec 15, 2008, 1:49pm (top)Message 130: Kerian

*hugs for LG* I hope your x-ray results bring better news.

Good luck, bib!

Dec 15, 2008, 3:22pm (top)Message 131: mindylou182

I'm sorry LG!

#124 As I remember Missy you said "Are you interested in knitting?"
"YES!"
It was quite a debate =P

Dec 16, 2008, 7:55am (top)Message 132: LadyN

Sending you big wrist-avoiding hugs LG. Mwah!!

Dec 17, 2008, 3:11pm (top)Message 133: Marensr

Poor LG we need to get you Mrs. Weasley's knitting needles.

I finished two hats but I gave one away without photographing it. I'll have to snap a photo the next time she is over.

Dec 17, 2008, 5:58pm (top)Message 134: rissa

I found out that my boyfriends mom is working on a baby blanket, I don't know how she's making it though, I don't remember if she knits, crochets, or quilts.

Jan 13, 2009, 6:04am (top)Message 140: lefty33

Jan 13, 2009, 9:19am (top)Message 141: Mandy2

WOW! That is amazing Cat! You must be so proud!

Jan 13, 2009, 9:52am (top)Message 142: kirbyowns

Jan 13, 2009, 11:02am (top)Message 143: biblioholic29

Truly beautiful cat! I love the color choices!

Jan 13, 2009, 11:04am (top)Message 144: elbakerone

Wow! I never would have guessed that was a homemade sweater - looks like one I recently saw on a rack at Macy's! Great work!!

Jan 13, 2009, 11:11am (top)Message 145: LadyN

cat, you are one clever fish! looks great! Is it for me??

Jan 13, 2009, 2:53pm (top)Message 146: littlegeek

#144 pssst....el, just so you know, many knitters actually hate it when people say that their work looks just like "store bought." It seems like a compliment, I know, but it isn't taken that way.

Jan 13, 2009, 4:02pm (top)Message 147: catbastet

Thanks everyone! I was relieved that it turned out so well. It's hard to tell sometimes how something will look just based on the pattern.

142- KIK!

Jan 13, 2009, 4:08pm (top)Message 148: Kerian

You did an outstanding job, cat! It's very impressive! :)

Jan 13, 2009, 4:14pm (top)Message 149: elbakerone

144/146 - oh, sorry :( It was supposed to be a compliment (hope you know I'm impressed, Cat!) Obviously Cat's is much cooler because it's unique and individual and special but I did see a similarly striped sweater at Macy's and all I was trying to say is that the quality and style appeared comparable to high end clothing retailers. My bad.

Jan 13, 2009, 4:20pm (top)Message 150: catbastet

No problem, el! I took it as a compliment. ;)

Jan 13, 2009, 4:53pm (top)Message 151: Espeon200

I'm just dying of curiosity, so I have to ask, is the blue stripe he bamboo yarn that "someone" got you for Christmas. It looks similar, but I can't remember exactly what it looked like.

Jan 13, 2009, 5:21pm (top)Message 152: jugglingpaynes

LOL espy! She's saving that for something super special because she loves it and it's super soft!

Jan 13, 2009, 5:28pm (top)Message 153: littlegeek

#149 I knew what you meant, just wanted you not to get blindsided by some cranky knitter some day. (I have seen this.)

To clarify: suppose you spent hours selecting the perfect pattern, purchased high quality yarn, spent hours and hours knitting, shaping, ripping out, knitting again, until you created a perfect garment, custom made for some lucky person. And they said, "looks just like something someone made on a machine in Indonesia and sold at Macy's for $50."

That's how some knitters hear it. (And it wasn't me.)

You have been warned.

Jan 14, 2009, 11:29am (top)Message 154: pollysmith

Cat! thats just beautiful! You are truely skilled!

Jan 14, 2009, 1:07pm (top)Message 155: readafew

Nice sweater!

Jan 14, 2009, 2:39pm (top)Message 156: mindylou182

pretty sweater! I love the colors!

Jan 15, 2009, 1:35pm (top)Message 157: MEM82

Jan 16, 2009, 6:22pm (top)Message 158: Marensr

Hooray cat! Congratulations. That is a splendid sweater.

Jan 24, 2009, 10:56am (top)Message 159: lefty33

Quilt is finished! It's a king-sized quilt though the bed is queen. I like plenty of blanket hanging down the edges. I wasn't sure that I liked this until it was finished. My style is typically less scrap-look, more ordered. But I wanted to do something different that I had done before. The block is called a disappearing 9-patch. I loved putting the blocks together and choosing where to put them so that I was happy with the way the colors flowed. But then I wasn't sure that I was happy with my color choices. Until I put the borders on. Now I love it. The quilting design is my favorite one I've done so far.

Here it is on the bed:

This is the detail of the quilting. It's a leafy/viney meandering design. I quilted it on my very normal home machine. I don't own a long-arm quilter or anything (unfortunately) so it was quite an undertaking to quilt this!

My signature. I use it for all my quilts with the year of its completion.

That's beautiful lefty! I'll think twice now about posting my lame attempt at making a rag quilt. If I ever finish it! :o)

When you say home machine, you mean sewing machine right? Not a specially made just for quilting home machine?

Jan 24, 2009, 11:34am (top)Message 161: Renald128

Very beautiful Lefty! It looks warm and SO soft! You are very talented!...Just out of curiosity: Do you do them as a hobby or do you sell them? (or the secret third option: Both)

Message edited by its author, Jan 24, 2009, 11:36am.

Jan 24, 2009, 11:41am (top)Message 162: MEM82

Oh, that is lovely, Lefty. You have a talent! There are special quilting machines? Neato!

Jan 24, 2009, 11:42am (top)Message 163: lefty33

JP, I just mean a normal sewing machine. I don't have any kind of special fancy quilting machine. Someday! But not yet.

Ron, thanks! It is mostly a hobby, but I have sold them too. Usually for selling I prefer to do it custom for the buyers so they can choose a color palate. I don't have gobs of quilts sitting around for people to buy already made. In fact, this is the first quilt I've kept for myself since I started quilting a couple years ago. I keep giving them away. This is why I am a bad businesswoman.

Jan 24, 2009, 11:43am (top)Message 164: lefty33

Oh, Mem, there are AMAZING quilting machines!! The really awesome ones are in the neighborhood of $10,000. Ones that are plausible for use at home are around $3,000. This is why I don't have one.

Jan 24, 2009, 1:56pm (top)Message 165: littlegeek

lefty, that quilt is gorgeous!

Jan 24, 2009, 2:25pm (top)Message 166: mindylou182

Jan 24, 2009, 5:37pm (top)Message 169: compskibook

Nice work lefty, and I love the colors!

Jan 24, 2009, 7:52pm (top)Message 170: Kerian

159 lefty:
I've never seen a quilt that looks like that. It's absolutely beuatiful! I love the colors. I'm so glad you are finally keeping one for yourself. I don't think I can begin to imagine just how much work goes into making quilts. :)

Jan 26, 2009, 1:04pm (top)Message 171: kirbyowns

BEAUTIFUL! You did an awesome job.

Jan 26, 2009, 1:57pm (top)Message 172: lefty33

Thanks everybody! I was telling my brother last night that I've had a hard time believing compliments for that particular quilt because even my mom just gave me a funny look when I first showed her the top. That was when it was just blocks pieced together, before borders and quilting. I was prepared for people to say "oh ... interesting." But, as always, you've all helped me feel better and more confident about it! :)

#167 LadyN, you have no idea how much I want to make one for all of you! Let's see ... that one took 6 months, times many friends... Just give me about 10 years and I should be done with the lot. ;)

P.S. Mom has since said she liked it after all and taken back the funny look.

Jan 27, 2009, 10:57am (top)Message 173: catbastet

I love that quilt, lefty! It is so beautiful!

Jan 27, 2009, 3:29pm (top)Message 174: mindylou182

Jan 27, 2009, 11:42pm (top)Message 176: Kerian

I was looking over the thread and just realized we were teased with lefty's quilt in post #45.

Jan 28, 2009, 6:52am (top)Message 177: lefty33

Thanks Cat and Bella! I'm glad you like it!

Bella, quilting isn't really so hard, just time-consuming. You should give it a try!

#176 K, kik! Yes, you were. But no one cared yet -- we were all thinking "socks, socks, socks, socks!" ;)

lefty, you just referenced yourself, and it's early (for me). I just read your message three times in confuzzlement before I realized you meant K's post.

Jan 28, 2009, 11:44am (top)Message 179: lefty33

Sorry to confuse you early in the morning! Just keeping everyone on their toes!

Jan 28, 2009, 3:09pm (top)Message 180: Ms_Bella

I wish I could... but if it took you that long to do it with a machine it would take me forever to try it by hand! I don't have a sewing machine any more... mine broke about a year ago and I haven't been able to replace it.

Jan 28, 2009, 7:34pm (top)Message 181: lefty33

Bella, by hand certainly takes a lot more time! I wouldn't enjoy piecing by hand at all. I hope you can get a new machine!

Apparently I'm in Finish Mode and have just now completed a pair of socks I'd been putting off finishing. It's a pattern I made up. Rather more simple than the last pair of socks I did. These are just knit and purl stitches.

Jan 28, 2009, 7:36pm (top)Message 182: pollysmith

they look great to me. lefty!

Jan 28, 2009, 7:47pm (top)Message 183: catbastet

I'm hoping compski got her sox today. Waiting for a post!

Jan 28, 2009, 10:04pm (top)Message 185: lefty33

Thanks, guys. And I thought they were too plain. They're for a boy, so I avoided the fancy stuff.

I can't wait to see Compski's socks sox! I love the yarn you chose for them, LG.

Jan 29, 2009, 9:43am (top)Message 188: Mandy2

That is a beautiful quilt, lefty! and those socks look soft.

Jan 29, 2009, 9:58am (top)Message 189: lefty33

The quilt in the background of these socks is one my grandma made. It was a wedding present. She's the one who inspired my quilting.

Jan 29, 2009, 12:42pm (top)Message 190: LadyN

Oh that's lovely. My grandma taught me to knit, but I haven't done it for years. You guys inspire me to try again, but I'm not very good. I know, I know...practice!

That's it. You're some sort of sock goddess.

#189 lefty:
I was going to ask about the quilt. I'm glad you said. ;)

I was in Michael's a few days ago when I ran into someone from work. Another knitter! I was getting things to make cards for my grandmother who is sick. I'm going to make a book card for her, too, but those take more time so I won't be able to send it for at least a week. I've only ever made one book card before.

I was wondering if any of the crafters around here have heard about the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act. It's really been buzzing in the homeschooling blogs I visit.
Here are a couple of articles about what is going on.
This one is from Forbes:

This is from the American Library Association:

There's a good, cheery article, JP! That seems like the most ridiculous of a lot of ridiculous laws. Where do I sign up for the that-is-a-stupid-idea group? How on earth do they suppose they are going to regulate all that anyway? Oh, how I hate everything politics. Stuff like that makes me want to move to an undeveloped jungle area. Oops, started to rant ... I'm stopping now.

I'm glad to hear you like the socks. Too bad it's about to be illegal to mail them anywhere. I almost forgot I was done ranting.

Jan 29, 2009, 8:11pm (top)Message 194: jugglingpaynes

LOL! I hear ya, lefty!
This was the government reaction to all the lead in toys. I guess we should be happy the recent plane crash ended well, or they would be eliminating birds as too make sure the sky is safe for airplanes.

Jan 29, 2009, 8:17pm (top)Message 195: pollysmith

how utterly stupid!

Jan 29, 2009, 8:30pm (top)Message 196: Kerian

I heard about it on LT's BookMooch group. I agree it's completely ridiculous and it makes me very angry. I just backspaced my rant until it was deleted.

Jan 30, 2009, 7:09am (top)Message 197: LadyN

WHAT???????????!!!! I am dumbfounded...

Jan 30, 2009, 10:42am (top)Message 198: readafew

They can kiss my @$$. I will continue making my pull dogs and I am NOT paying $1000 to have each unique dog 'tested'. This is a problem that could have been solved with a law saying 'Don't make children's toys with lead or phthalate" and then prosecuted anyone found to be doing so. This kind of blanket overreaction does not belong in the land of the free.

True that. I think Etsy had a petition or action kit about it readafew. I'll see if I can find the link for you.

The action kit is here, just hurry. I think today is the last day for comment.

I completely agree, readafew! I was certain when I heard about these laws that I was being misinformed but nope, it's true. It's just going to fail spectacularly.

That is completely ridiculous...

Jan 30, 2009, 8:38pm (top)Message 202: rissa

apparently our government doesn't even know the difference between an infant and a tween. infants are the ones who put everything in their mouths and are therefore affected by such things in anything they can reach to put in their mouths. tweens are not at risk. I can't remember the last time I saw a 12 year old sucking on a book.

Thanks for that link, JP. I've contacted the consumer protection people and my Congressman.

The action kit. Sounds like a superhero kit.

Jan 31, 2009, 7:27pm (top)Message 205: lefty33

Shh, don't tell anyone else about my secret identity.

I've finished my cushion project! I am so relieved to have them finished. They're on my blog here. But here's a before and after:

Jan 31, 2009, 8:17pm (top)Message 206: foggidawn

Nice, lefty! I need to make a new cover for Espy and MrsE's couch -- it really clashes with my living room furniture, but we needed the extra seating -- but I've been dragging my feet on that. Maybe seeing your pretty cushions will inspire me!

Jan 31, 2009, 8:39pm (top)Message 207: lefty33

I don't blame you for dragging your feet, Foggi! Upholstery stuff isn't very fun.

Feb 1, 2009, 12:37am (top)Message 208: Kerian

What a difference, lefty! I love the after photo!

I'm told none of our furniture really matches, but we have a blue theme going on in this room. The living once had a gold theme. (I'm technically in the family room.)

Feb 1, 2009, 9:00am (top)Message 209: MEM82

Wow! That looks like a completely different set. Makes me wish I had a different couch so I could re-upholster it. 8) But, alas, we just bought our couch last year and it's holding up rather well *knock on wood*.

Feb 1, 2009, 11:02am (top)Message 210: MrsGrinch

Geez thats amazing!!!! I would never have such discipline.

Feb 1, 2009, 6:10pm (top)Message 211: kirbyowns

I'm working on a toy snake for the boys. I'll post pictures when I can.

Feb 1, 2009, 10:37pm (top)Message 212: biblioholic29

I finished the mini-blanket in the car on the way to Holly's, so I don't have a picture for you. The next step is to convince him to carry it instead of the big one. That's the hard part and up to his mom!

Feb 2, 2009, 8:37am (top)Message 213: lefty33

No pictures?? :(

Make Holly take one! :)

Feb 2, 2009, 9:52am (top)Message 214: biblioholic29

I'll see what I can do. :)

Feb 4, 2009, 11:10am (top)Message 215: readafew

have some new and improved dogs up on Etsy Finally finished them last night, I have a week to sell them before that stupid law comes into effect (though I ain't taking them down). I changed the design just a little but I think it makes a big difference.

Feb 4, 2009, 12:32pm (top)Message 216: lefty33

They look great, readafew! And I love that your Etsy name is makeafew.

Feb 4, 2009, 1:08pm (top)Message 217: kirbyowns

The sock snake for the boys isn't going too well. It's actually very ugly. Oh well.

Feb 4, 2009, 1:12pm (top)Message 218: biblioholic29

Any one else read the words "sock snake" and immediately think of a certain episode of Coupling?

(The real one, not the lame American version that lasted for, like 3 episodes.)

Feb 4, 2009, 1:24pm (top)Message 219: jugglingpaynes

It's very simple readafew. Just say they are for adults only. ;o)

And now you have one less to sell. I'm going to save it for the next toddler birthday I have to go to. (I never remember when the birthdays are, so it's good to have a gift in advance!)

Feb 4, 2009, 1:35pm (top)Message 220: readafew

219 > I just saw the email! Thank you very much! (My first Sale!) If looking at the picture you have any preferences (They are pretty close but not identical) let me know. I'll try to get the package out tomorrow certainly by Friday. I hope you like it.

216 > since I already had this one and snapafew at flickr I thought why mess with a good thing?

Feb 4, 2009, 1:37pm (top)Message 221: jugglingpaynes

Surprise me. :o)

There's no rush. I think I have at least a couple of months before any birthdays come up. Almost all the children I know were born in the spring or summer. Except for one lucky girl who shares my birthday.

Feb 5, 2009, 10:38am (top)Message 222: LadyN

THey're gorgeous readafew!

bib - glad you like Coupling, I loved it. :-)

Feb 5, 2009, 12:28pm (top)Message 223: biblioholic29

They still play it constantly on BBCAmerica here and it's always available OnDemand, which is pretty much the only reason I haven't bought it on DVD. One of the funniest shows ever.

Feb 5, 2009, 12:50pm (top)Message 224: LadyN

I am ever so slighty in love with Richard Coyle. It was quite a shock to discover he isn't really welsh!

Feb 5, 2009, 1:26pm (top)Message 225: biblioholic29

Hmmm...me too. I even watched Strange, which I randomly found On Demand one day. I was able to watch three episodes and then it disappeared.

Feb 5, 2009, 1:45pm (top)Message 226: elbakerone

If there are still some left I'll be ordering one in a month or so. I don't have a budget to buy gifts in advance but I think that would make an adorable gift for my nephew. He absolutely LOVES the book Go, Dog Go and I think your toys would remind him of that dog!

Feb 5, 2009, 1:58pm (top)Message 227: readafew

well they aren't flying off the shelves, so if I get down to 1 left I'll try to let you know, otherwise thanks for seriously considering spending your hard earned money on them.

Feb 7, 2009, 2:30pm (top)Message 228: Marensr

Lefty, your quilt is gorgeous.

I finally uploaded a link to some of my christmas knitting projects (the hats and a scarf, one hat I gave away without photographing :( )

cat for you I included the first sweater I ever knit (I think I was about 12 or 13) I am just lucky I liked things oversized because it still fits but I wish I hadn't chosen pink. Oh well.

http://picasaweb.google.com/marensr/Knit...

Coupling use to run on our PBS station- hilarious but yes not for children. LadyN which one was Richard Coyle?

Oh and part of why I have been gone was so my sister and I could design a website for our knit patterns and things. We're not quite done but hope to have it up in March. If anyone is interested I'll post it when we are done. My sister is an incredible knitter so there are some good things on there.

Feb 7, 2009, 4:02pm (top)Message 229: jugglingpaynes

Wow! Nice work Maren! I think the sweater is a nice color. When you said pink, I thought something lighter, like pastel pink. Cat liked that it had a hood and pockets.

Feb 7, 2009, 6:06pm (top)Message 230: Ms_Bella

Wow Maren! I absolutely love your hoodie/sweater. It is gorgeous! And you hats and scarf are wonderful too.

Feb 7, 2009, 8:25pm (top)Message 231: catbastet

228- Beautiful, Maren!

Feb 7, 2009, 9:26pm (top)Message 232: biblioholic29

Gorgeous Mar! And I know you asked LadyN, but since I know the answer...Richard Coyle played Jeff. The funniest one.

Feb 8, 2009, 8:53am (top)Message 233: readafew

There are a lot of talented knitters here!

Feb 8, 2009, 10:00am (top)Message 234: lefty33

Maren, those are all gorgeous! I especially love the red hat. Husband thinks hoodie sweaters are the best idea ever. I thought it was a good pink. Not really very pink at all. And I would certainly be interested in seeing your finished website!

Feb 8, 2009, 10:16am (top)Message 235: pollysmith

lovely! just lovely!

Feb 10, 2009, 10:39pm (top)Message 236: Marensr

Thanks for all the nice compliments.

Hey they Hoodie pattern was really simple from a pattern called Wonderful Wallabys It had all the sizes from Baby to Large man so Lefty you could knit husband his own hoodie. I suspect someone must still be selling the pattern. I'll have to ask my mom if she still has a copy.

Of course it is Jeff. He was hilarious. That is why the American attempt was not as good no painfully funny Jeff.

Feb 12, 2009, 11:14am (top)Message 239: readafew

Thank you, I always worry cause I know where all the 'mistakes' are. Yes Etsy does have a feedback system and I can use all the happy/positive feedback I can get. I haven't used it yet so I'll have to look and see how it's done.

Feb 12, 2009, 11:31am (top)Message 240: lefty33

Feb 12, 2009, 11:46am (top)Message 244: jugglingpaynes

Everyone is so crafty! I need to take pictures of some of my scrapbook pages. That's really what I throw the most of my creative energy into. I just started self-teaching myself to knit, though. It's more amusing to my husband and cat than it is productive, at this point.

Feb 12, 2009, 12:06pm (top)Message 246: jugglingpaynes

Helpful hint, jfslone, never leave your knitting projects out. I can't tell you how many times a cat has unraveled or tangled my daughter's knitting.

Feb 12, 2009, 12:09pm (top)Message 247: kirbyowns

Or simply stolen it. Kirby tends to do that. Especially if it's shaped like a pot holder.
Oh, guess what Kirby taught Finnegan last night. (rolls eyes)

Sophie found a skein of yarn in my room that she likes to carry around the house. Fortunately, she hasn't figured out how to unroll the yarn . . . yet. And she doesn't chew on it -- just brings it out and leaves it in the middle of the living room. She also does this with socks and slippers.

Also thankful that my door to the "crafting room" shuts securely!

When I was casting off the "mini-blanket" my nephew was far more interested in the ball of yarn. It being a ball and all. I was a little worried he'd make off with it. Then I finished and he wanted the needles (he's a budding percussionist).

Feb 12, 2009, 7:41pm (top)Message 253: LadyN

#232 - Thanks for picking up the ball there! haven't been in for a couple of days (should be asleep now...). Ah yes, Jeff. Love. Him. A favourite Jeff moment - "she thinks I collect womens' ears in a bucket!". tee hee hee. Must watch again...

Gorgeous, gorgeous things you peeps are making. I am humbled.

Fun new socks Lefty!

LadyN or Jeff and the wooden leg?

Feb 24, 2009, 8:14pm (top)Message 258: Kerian

What interesting socks, lefty! I like the pattern. Is that a cat tree for Larry that I see in the first photo? :)

Feb 25, 2009, 8:06am (top)Message 259: lefty33

I like socks, and I love new socks, I think if I knew how to make socks (and had the patience for it) that would be a dangerous thing. Still, I'm jealous of your abilities.

Feb 25, 2009, 12:45pm (top)Message 261: biblioholic29

Plus poor Pepper might just explode with the awesomeness of a never-ending array of socks!

too true too true.

Feb 25, 2009, 1:04pm (top)Message 263: littlegeek

Not to mention the yarn laying around that s/he could destroy.

Feb 25, 2009, 2:24pm (top)Message 264: kirbyowns

My "craft" tonight will consist of sewing leashes together.

Feb 25, 2009, 4:33pm (top)Message 265: foggidawn

#260/261 -- Does Pepper love socks, too? Because Sophie thinks they are the best thing ever! She likes to carry them around the house. She is fond of yarn, too: I have a skein of it in my craft stuff, and Sophie likes to get it out and carry it around.

Feb 25, 2009, 4:56pm (top)Message 266: Mandy2

Oh yes, my little angel loves socks. I can not take them off in front of her unless i want her to have them. And we usually wake up in the morning with a few extra socks on the bed.

Feb 25, 2009, 5:20pm (top)Message 267: kirbyowns

Kirby will get socks out of the hamper. He keeps one and gives Finnegan the other. He'll steal "borrow" new ones too, but dirty ones seem to the the best.

Feb 25, 2009, 5:22pm (top)Message 268: Mandy2

Oh yes Pepper definately prefers the dirty ones.

Feb 25, 2009, 6:35pm (top)Message 269: foggidawn

LOL! Our last dog had no interest in socks, so I was really bemused when Sophie started dragging ours around. Guess it's fairly common, then. I love that Kirby shares with Finnegan! :-)

Feb 25, 2009, 6:57pm (top)Message 270: littlegeek

My old cat used to love stinky sox. They were second only to catnip.

Feb 25, 2009, 7:45pm (top)Message 271: compskibook

Feb 27, 2009, 9:41pm (top)Message 273: lefty33

I got a letter back from my congressman about the new crafting law. The letter said that individual crafters and small business owners/crafters are not going to be targeted because they will be getting their supplies from larger companies and those companies will be paying for their products to be tested. Therefore items made from tested materials are safe. Didn't mention things like fabric, yarn, wood, etc that don't start out as children's items and wouldn't have been tested.

I've finished two more pairs of socks but I shipped them to HE people today and want them to see the socks first. So no pictures yet.

Feb 27, 2009, 10:19pm (top)Message 274: catbastet

I was wondering about that. If they are going to hold crafters responsible, they would need to have some way of getting supplies certified. The problem is, someone like readafew is creating most of his own supplies, except for the finish he uses.

I was reading a site today called National Bankruptcy Day about the CPSIA. Apparently, this ruling is managing to polarize activists and the writer complains about the act being used as a litmus test for how much you care about children. (If you don't support it, you must not care)

It will be interesting to see where this leads. The thrift shops near me have definitely been affected. My Goodwill store wouldn't accept a Thomas train toy box because they can't take painted wood items.

Feb 28, 2009, 4:26pm (top)Message 286: kirbyowns

Yes, they will be Truffula trees. Let me get them on a wall and I'll post a picture.

I've never read the book but I did see the movie several years ago. I remember thinking it was sad. I guessed from the start that it was for your classroom and have to say I've never seen a classroom create things from Dr. Suess's books before. Yours will be very interesting! Good work, btw. You've captured his books well. :)

I'm actually making them to put in our Science Lab for our Seuss-a-thon celebration on Monday. We'll be doing activities all day and watching Horton Hears a Who at the end of the day. The Seuss-a-thon is in celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday, and the whole school (1st & 2nd grade) will be celebrating by doing different activities that day. This day is also a kick-off of a 2 week long author study for the 2nd graders.

I will be saving the things that I am making if possible. I'm going to try to laminate them and save for my classroom for next year.

Feb 28, 2009, 4:49pm (top)Message 290: catbastet

Does she have some ideas for it? We could post cats in hats? Quote a book? Perhaps MrA can run around the threads as MrA and his other persona playing the roles of Thing1 and Thing2.

KIK
Well, some ideas from our Seuss-a-thon
*Read Dr. Seuss books for 1904 seconds (31 min., 44 sec.) to celebrate the year he was born.
*Watch a movie made from a Dr. Seuss book.
*Graph you're favorite Seuss character (we did favorite books last year).
*My pod (group of teachers) are dressing up as Thing 1, Thing 2, and Thing 3. We may even have a Thing 2.5, I'm not sure yet.

Ooh I love Whoville kirby Very creative. Hmm I wish I could see bib's picture.

Whenever you just see a red "x" you can right click on the space where the "x" is, click properties, and then copy the url address. Once copied paste it into your browser and it will take you to the picture on another website usually.

Mar 4, 2009, 10:45pm (top)Message 307: Kerian

Beautiful socks!

Mar 5, 2009, 12:37am (top)Message 308: littlegeek

I can't see bib's sox!

kirby those decorations are awesome.

OK, I came into this thread to kvetch. I dropped a couple of stitches in the massively complex lace shawl I'm knitting, and I have to tink out about 5 rows. UGHGHGRRRGHGHGH!!!! So frustrating!!!

I was so bummed I just started the second sock for my husband. *sigh*

Mar 5, 2009, 7:29am (top)Message 309: lefty33

Yay Bib! I'm glad you like them! The little gathers in the pattern showed up better in your picture than they did in the ones I took before I sent them.

LG, I don't blame you for starting a sock instead. Unknitting is quite frustrating indeed! You can just see all your time in each stitch unraveled. Messing something up usually puts it on the back burner for a while until I can build up the patience to fix it.

Mar 5, 2009, 11:40am (top)Message 310: littlegeek

Yeah, that's what I get for knitting lace. It's impossible to frog it, you can only tink it. I tried to fix it with a crochet hook and just ended up making it worse.

It's a lesson for my students. They think I'm infallible, I keep telling them I'm just patient. Most of the time. ;-)

Mar 5, 2009, 2:28pm (top)Message 311: Marensr

Oh LG I know how stinking that can be. I often keep the more difficult project next to the less difficult one so I can switch when frustrated and yes- lace gets all funnly looking when you try to pick up the stitches with a crochet hook.

For years I used to make my mom rip things back for me. (Probably my freshman year in college was the last year). Now I find it a little sickly satisfying to yank something off the needles and pull it back if it is not right. Although with lace I would do it a stitch at a time as well which is a pain.

Still on the bright side your husband will get a second sock.

Mar 5, 2009, 2:45pm (top)Message 312: littlegeek

I always have an easy project on tap when I'm knitting lace. Nature of the beast. I was doing really well on this project until this, but it seems I have to tink at least once every time I do a giant lace project.

Mar 5, 2009, 3:35pm (top)Message 313: Marensr

This may be why I keep my lace project small.. . ;)

Well in the next week or two I'll have some pictures of my flock of loons I'll be putting up for sale. (Garden/Yard ornaments.

Norman! Listen! It's the loons! They're welcoming us back.

Sorry. "On Golden Pond" moment.

Mar 7, 2009, 7:40pm (top)Message 322: littlegeek

I fixed the lace today and it wasn't bad. Only took 2 episodes of Buffy.

god, Spike is a hottie.

Mar 8, 2009, 9:43am (top)Message 323: biblioholic29

Yes. He. Is.

Mar 8, 2009, 11:01am (top)Message 324: Marensr

Ah good LG at least you found a way to make it less painful. The actor who plays Spike was originally a Chicago actor. Surprising I know.

Mar 8, 2009, 11:26am (top)Message 325: biblioholic29

But he was born and grew up in Modesto, CA which is where the last bookstore I worked at was. Apparently he could often be seen at Target when home visiting family. I never ran into him though. :(

Mar 8, 2009, 4:56pm (top)Message 326: puppetmaster101

i have nothing to say :)

Mar 9, 2009, 11:31pm (top)Message 327: Kerian

Puppet maybe you should post pics of some of the puppets you have made.

Mar 14, 2009, 7:02pm (top)Message 330: catbastet

I'm working on an embroidery that will hopefully turn out looking like a phoenix. I drew the design, but I can never tell how the colors will look until I've put them in. However, it seems to be working out so far. If I like the way it turns out, maybe I'll post a picture.

Mar 14, 2009, 7:18pm (top)Message 331: pollysmith

I'd love to see it Cat!

Mar 14, 2009, 7:54pm (top)Message 332: catbastet

Thanks! I like doing embroidery. Once, I embroidered a dragon surrounded by treasure for my brother for Christmas. I was really happy with the way it turned out. :)

Mar 26, 2009, 12:10pm (top)Message 333: littlegeek

I finished the peacock shawl, y'all! Pictures to come in a few days.

It's going to look amazing once I block it.

Apr 1, 2009, 12:39pm (top)Message 339: littlegeek

The shawl pics are taken, we are still having problems with the internet at home because *ahem* my husband refuses to get help. I keep asking him to call the guy that messed it up and he keeps on thinking he can fix it himself. And he keeps making it worse.

Tip for guys: ASK FOR DIRECTIONS!!!!

Yeah, MrA -- keep in mind that some HEers have kids that read over their shoulders . . . and some of us check in from work!

Apr 2, 2009, 8:46pm (top)Message 350: readafew

HAHA, Mr A needs to check is posts after posting. I was a little concerned for him when I saw that. If you copy the link and post it in the browser it is a cartoon of a kid with a real sock puppet. Apparently this is their way of dealing with hot-linking. So don't be to harsh on Mr A. hopefully he'll be back soon and fix the problem.

Apr 2, 2009, 8:48pm (top)Message 351: readafew

OH even BETTER. After visiting the picture in a browser, the actual picture shows up. So Mr. A has NO CLUE what the rest of us saw/are looking at. That is a REAL dirty trick from the web site.

if you click on this link it is the picture Mr A tried to post.

This is MsDonna *stern look on her face*

I just noticed MrA's post and have logged on as him and deleted it. *pulls out pro-forma apology letter again*

On behalf of MrA I would like to sincerely apologize to anyone who was forced to view the image posted by him. Please be assured that it was not his intention to post an image of this nature and Readafew's explanation is probably correct (I hope). Steps will be taken to ensure that MrA is more careful in the future.

Hi,

My apologies for my hotlinking protection disturbing this group so much. Unfortunately that particular image is very popular and is hotlinked by many, many sites. The result is that each time the image is accessed on a remote site the bandwidth used is charged against my account. Hence the little substitution trick which aims to deter the practice :-).

But it was not my intention to upset what appears to be a fairly mild group, and for this my apologies!

All the best,

Andrew Strong

>#374: Dude, are you serious? Is that a sockpuppet account created as a joke? If you are the person really responsible for that little trick, i've got some things to say to you. Starting with, change your smurfing name.

Apr 13, 2009, 2:48am (top)Message 377: andrew.46

Hi Mr Andrew,

It is not a joke it is a measure designed to protect against the unethical activity of hotlinking someone else's images, which is exactly what you have done.

The page itself is not a joke and if you take the time to read the attributions at the base of this page you will see that I sought and received permission to use that image. You sir did not seek that permission.

And the name btw is my real name: Andrew Strong. If you really have some things to say to me there is an email address on every page on my site, feel free to email me.

Andrew

Apr 13, 2009, 3:05am (top)Message 379: MsDonna

#377 - andrew.46 you could have achieved the same thing by simply having the image change to a message stating what was occurring ie, permission not sought to hotlink this picture. You may be aware of the implications of hotlinking, but you can not assume that everyone does. Not only have you exposed children to pornography, but you have also placed people in jeopardy who may have logged onto a safe site from their workplace.

I personally think you do this for attention and for no other reason, why else would you go looking at the sites where the image was posted? Go away troll.

Apr 13, 2009, 3:06am (top)Message 380: Kerian

*applauds Donna*

I'm in agreement.

#379 -- Well stated.

Apr 13, 2009, 8:35am (top)Message 382: andrew.46

Hi,

Well, just to prove I am not such an evil troll I have removed the offending image and replaced it with a less provocative one.

My apologies to all.

Andrew

Apr 13, 2009, 8:39am (top)Message 383: foggidawn

#382 -- Much more appropriate, and I think it gets your message across, which the other one did not. You apology is appreciated

Apr 13, 2009, 10:29am (top)Message 384: jugglingpaynes

Thank you for the apology andrew.46
As an artist, I understand your feeling about the hotlinking. I also understand that the internet is a big place as hard to police as the Wild West and that some have chosen drastic methods to protect their little homestead. I also know that children tend to get caught in the crossfire (my own 15 y.o. inadvertently saw the picture) so I appreciate you changing the picture.

Now let's move on to the new thread. I hear lefty made some dresses... :o)
