Nov 1, 2008, 10:43am (top)Message 1: Espeon200

Well, the candy-crazed month known as October has ended, and now we move into the Turkey-Day and shopping-crazed November.

I have a lot of books from the Library that I need to read, but I working on finishing Grave Peril first.

Nov 1, 2008, 10:48am (top)Message 2: pollysmith

I'm finishing up "Victory of Eagles" and then will start on "Cat in a Sapphire Slipper" Jim is reading "Wicked"

Nov 1, 2008, 11:03am (top)Message 3: foggidawn

I'm reading Flora's Dare right now -- sequel to Flora Segunda, which I really enjoyed. I'm also reading Little Women, because I realized at the last movie watch that I hadn't read the book in several years, so I thought it was time for a reread.

Nov 1, 2008, 1:00pm (top)Message 4: lunacat

I'm reading The Lords of Vaumartin and I Dreamed of Africa (which I left at work on wedneseday....grr!)

Nov 2, 2008, 1:14am (top)Message 5: Kerian

I read the first chapter of Rebel's Angels today, book two in Libba Bray's Gemma Doyle trilogy.

Nov 2, 2008, 3:37am (top)Message 6: paola2601

I'm readingThe thirteenth tale.I like it a lot!

Nov 2, 2008, 8:33am (top)Message 7: compskibook

I finally finished Warrior Boy and Dragon Girl (aka Brisingr). Now I can return it and no longer have the library overdue fees hanging over my head. I owe 70 cents!

Now it is time to catch up with Fellowship of the Ring and then I am going to reread Little Women like Foggi. Comparing the two movies during Group Movie night has really got me wondering what was original and what was made up. I am also interested to see which stuck to the book better. I might have to rent the June Alyson version and watch that, too.

Nov 2, 2008, 9:50am (top)Message 8: tiegster

Almost finished with Fellowship of the Ring. After that I'm going to do Nick and Norah's and maybe Eldest if I can get ahold of a copy. Basically, I've found I will never finish my TBR's...I keep adding to the list. Oh, and I just read a bunch of children's christmas books...I was in the mood.

Olivia Helps with Christmas
Shall I Knit You a Hat?
Angelina's Christmas
Toot & Puddle: I'll Be Home For Christmas
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Eloise at Christmastime
One Snowy Night by M. Christina Butler
and Little Red's Christmas Story

I know...Hallowe'en just finished.

Nov 2, 2008, 11:54am (top)Message 9: lefty33

#6 paola, I love The Thirteenth Tale! I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it!

#7 Hooray for compski for finishing Fire!

Nov 2, 2008, 3:33pm (top)Message 10: foggidawn

All of you who are finishing Fellowship of the Ring, don't forget to comment on the appropriate thread(s)! (Yes, I know, I need to catch up, too . . .)

Nov 2, 2008, 6:29pm (top)Message 11: mindylou182

Still reading Ptolemy's Gate. I've been lazy.

Nov 2, 2008, 6:49pm (top)Message 12: Ms_Bella

I just finished The Golem's Eye and am going to start Ptolemy's Gate in the next hour or so.

Nov 3, 2008, 10:42am (top)Message 13: Espeon200

I finished Grave Peril last night, and now I'm about a third of the way through Speaker for the Dead.

Nov 3, 2008, 12:40pm (top)Message 14: readafew

reading Danny Birt's book Ending an Ending, not too bad, about half way through. Should finish by this weekend.

Nov 3, 2008, 12:56pm (top)Message 15: Kerian

I've almost finished reading The Enneagram Made Easy.

Nov 3, 2008, 2:52pm (top)Message 16: Marensr

I finished Fingersmith and started Summer at Tiffany and the second Kiki Strike book. I reading research right now so these are my fun books and necessarily a bit lighter.

Nov 3, 2008, 5:44pm (top)Message 17: catbastet

Right now I am in the middle of Izzy, Willy-Nilly. After that, I want to read Unexpected Magic, which looks really good.

Nov 3, 2008, 7:26pm (top)Message 18: Espeon200

I finished Speaker for the Dead a little while ago, and I've moved on to the next book in my stack.

Nov 4, 2008, 7:32pm (top)Message 19: Ms_Bella

ok...I put down Ptolemy's Gate today and decided to read Wicked Lovely which is really really good the only reason I put it down is because Tom came home... he had a bad day so I am babying him.

Nov 4, 2008, 8:47pm (top)Message 20: Renald128

I just finished the stories of eva luna by Isabel Allende and I started Blindness by José Saramago and Flashback by Jenny Siler has anyone read any of the books I'm reading i would love to hear some of your opinions on any of them. thanks

Nov 4, 2008, 10:20pm (top)Message 21: lefty33

#20 Renald, I haven't read any of those, but welcome to HE! :)

I FINALLY finished a book! It's probably been about 2 weeks since my last completed book. :( I'm blaming Dragon Girl & Warrior Boy Do Pointless Things. And having too many dresses to alter and kids to teach (..and socks to knit). Anyway, I finished Dewey. It was great, of course, for anyone who likes cats or pets. Non-animal people might not understand. ;)

(Did I get all the common emoticons in there?)

Nov 5, 2008, 2:01am (top)Message 22: Kerian

I think you missed one, lefty.

:P~~~

I want to read Dewey! I need to remember to borrow it. Only, my mom is afriad to lend it to me. She told me his full name - it's so cute!

Nov 5, 2008, 7:14am (top)Message 23: lefty33

Oh, right -- thanks for reminding me of that one, K. :P~~~

Is she afraid to let you borrow it because you'll never give it back?

Nov 5, 2008, 3:40pm (top)Message 24: lunacat

#20 Renald128

I love Blindness. Its one of my favourite books, I can read it again and again and get something different from it every single time.

Nov 5, 2008, 5:17pm (top)Message 25: Kerian

#23 lefty:
You're always welcome! ;)
I don't think she'd worry about that. I still have her book, Sickened, but she has my copy of A Little Princess.

Nov 5, 2008, 5:19pm (top)Message 26: littlegeek

I just finished The Hero of Ages and Looking for Alaska, but now I'm reading Touchstone by Laurie R. King.

Maren, how did you like Fingersmith? I loved it!

Nov 5, 2008, 5:29pm (top)Message 27: Kerian

LG, I just finished Fingersmith, too. Great book! Thanks for recommending it.

Nov 5, 2008, 5:40pm (top)Message 28: littlegeek

Glad you liked it, K!

Nov 5, 2008, 6:03pm (top)Message 29: Ms_Bella

I finished Wicked Lovely Last night and started Ink Exchange a bit ago, Tom picked it up for me I was very suprised that he came home with both Ink Exchange and Revelations : A Blue Bloods Novel! Lol he has been peeking at my wishlist.

Nov 5, 2008, 6:09pm (top)Message 30: lefty33

#26 LG, did you like Looking for Alaska? I read it a few months ago. I was hooked from the first page when the chapter was marked "before."

re: Fingersmith>> It's high on my TBR list and it just got higher. I need more reading time!!

Nov 6, 2008, 12:19am (top)Message 31: Kerian

Looking for Alaska is in my TBR pile. I'm not even sure that I remember what it's about, but so many of you had mentioned it that I got it from a used bookstore a while ago. ;)

Fingersmith is nice. It isn't modern and reminds me a bit of a classic I've read, but it's truely unique and has some mystery as well. Extraordinarily plot twisting.

Enjoy your books, bella! I've only read the first half of Ink Exchange - I was reading it when I left NY. (It was suge's.) From what I did read, it was good. I hope Revelations is, too. That one snuck up on me. I hadn't known the release date until day of.

Nov 6, 2008, 10:13am (top)Message 32: pollysmith

I need to write down all these titles and then go get them to read, maybe that will expand my reading interests

Nov 6, 2008, 11:37am (top)Message 33: Ms_Bella

Ink Exchange was as wonderul as Wicked Lovely I am now rereading Blue Bloods and Masquerade so I can read Revelations

Nov 6, 2008, 12:16pm (top)Message 34: littlegeek

lefty, check my review of Looking for Alaska. It was pretty good, but it had a couple of flaws, imo. I didn't love the ending. It definitely had good characters and a good "feel" of high school.

ETA: poop! LT did that post-eating thing with my review. I had to recreate it, but the magic of my original prose is now missing.

*grumble, grumble, technology, grumble*

Message edited by its author, Nov 6, 2008, 12:26pm.

Nov 6, 2008, 12:22pm (top)Message 35: kirbyowns

Revelations is out! How exciting. *makes an addition to her B&N list*

Nov 6, 2008, 12:52pm (top)Message 36: lefty33

LG, I agree! But it was a good read anyway.

Nov 6, 2008, 5:48pm (top)Message 37: Espeon200

I think that An Abundance of Katherines was a much better book by Green. I liked Looking for Alaska; I thought it was a good read, but Katherines was much better.

Nov 6, 2008, 6:47pm (top)Message 38: Kerian

Bella, I am in shock. You hadn't read books 1 or 2 yet?! Your boyfriend either knows what he is doing by getting you to read your TBR pile (books 1 & 2) or is a bad influence as much as we are for your TBR pile increasing. ;)

I'm still reading Rebel Angels and The Enneagram Made Easy. I hope to finish the second of the two today.

Nov 6, 2008, 7:15pm (top)Message 39: mindylou182

I'm still reading Joy Luck Club and Ptolemy's Gate.
I usually read a couple chapters before I go to bed. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem like there is enough time in the day to read them all.
Stupid school and all the homework.
And stupid me for not reading.
Soon I'll have to get a job too so that will slow me down.
::sigh::

Nov 6, 2008, 9:33pm (top)Message 40: Ms_Bella

lol K! no I have read books 1 and 2 both but I wanted to reread them before I read Revelations

Nov 6, 2008, 11:28pm (top)Message 41: Kerian

Ah, that makes much more sense. I'm considering rereading Son of a Witch before buying A Lion Among Men.

Nov 6, 2008, 11:48pm (top)Message 42: littlegeek

*smacks hand to head*

I keep forgetting to read Son of a Witch. I promise I will read it, Kerian, some day.

Nov 7, 2008, 1:38am (top)Message 43: Kerian

Someday. Sure. ;) Hee hee. I'm honestly being just as awful about reading it for the second time. I can't really remember a great amount about the book so I don't want to read the new book until then. I do remember my theories about book 2, though! I can't say anything so must bite my tongue. Any luck with it being available on your kindle?

Nov 7, 2008, 8:31am (top)Message 44: biblioholic29

Hey, remember I bought Son of a Witch the day it came out and still haven't read it (hollybeee's fault!)

Nov 8, 2008, 12:27am (top)Message 45: cmbohn

Marensr - I haven't read the second Kiki Strike book. Is it as good as the first?

I just finished listening to Heir Apparent, which I love, but the narrator was a little annoying. Still, the story was great. I'm going to start The Thief tonight. And I got The Well of Ascension and Men at Arms from the bookstore today, happy happy!

Nov 8, 2008, 7:18am (top)Message 46: foggidawn

Oh, enjoy The Thief! I love that book! And the sequels are, in my opinion, even better.

I'm almost done with Little Women, which is a good thing because I have TBRs stacking up like planes over Atlanta.

Nov 8, 2008, 8:22am (top)Message 47: lunacat

I finished The Forgotten Beasts of Eld which was BRILLIANT!! and have now started Dragonflight which isn't what I was expecting but I'm going with it!

Nov 8, 2008, 10:48am (top)Message 48: pollysmith

I just reserved Gregory Maquires book "A Lion Amoung Men" at the library it sounds really good

Nov 8, 2008, 4:52pm (top)Message 49: MrAndrew

Nov 8, 2008, 5:03pm (top)Message 50: lefty33

I got The Eyre Affair at this weekend's book sale so I'm probably going to start it soon. It is the first one, right?

I started The Other Book because I have it out from the library and feel compelled to read it before it's extremely late.

The Thief is on my TBR pile. Glad to know the series only gets better -- that's rare!

Nov 8, 2008, 5:17pm (top)Message 51: MrAndrew

yep, that's the first one. It's very good, too.

Nov 8, 2008, 5:45pm (top)Message 52: Renald128

#49.MrAndrew : I read that book and I thought it was just ok, I mean the story was interesting and everything but I felt something was missing. How are u liking it so far?

Nov 9, 2008, 6:02am (top)Message 53: MrAndrew

It's interesting enough so far, but i'm only halfway through. It's not the sort of thing i usually read.

Nov 9, 2008, 6:04pm (top)Message 54: littlegeek

the Thief was just ok, imho.

Im reading Touchstone.

Nov 9, 2008, 8:33pm (top)Message 55: mindylou182

I finished Joy Luck Club.
Now I can concentrate on Ptolemy's Gate. I've been slacking on that.

Nov 10, 2008, 6:20am (top)Message 56: Ms_Bella

I finished Ink Exchange and Revelations. I started Night World by: L.J. Smith A book which includes Secret Vampire, Spellbinder, and Daughters of Darkness

Nov 11, 2008, 5:34pm (top)Message 57: catbastet

I am reading The Science of Fear right now. It's pretty good so far!

Nov 11, 2008, 6:53pm (top)Message 58: foggidawn

I finally finished Little Women, went through Happenstance Found and Magic's Child, and have started in on A Curse As Dark AS Gold finally.

Nov 11, 2008, 6:56pm (top)Message 59: compskibook

I finally finished Fellowship of the Rings and I finally got going on Little Women.

Nov 11, 2008, 6:59pm (top)Message 60: littlegeek

Finished Touchstone, which was just ok and I'm now reading My Name is Will.

Nov 11, 2008, 7:09pm (top)Message 61: Kerian

I don't think it's possible to finish the enneagram book I'm reading since you can apply it to other people after applying it to yourself. It's like that book, If you give a mouse a cookie (which insisted that you reread it once you completed it. ;) I'm going to have to put it aside. I hope by the end of tomorrow to finish my other book, Rebel Angels.

Nov 11, 2008, 7:15pm (top)Message 62: compskibook

60 LG: Wouldn't Touchstone touchstone for you :)

Nov 11, 2008, 7:24pm (top)Message 63: Kerian

I saw it touchstoned recently and laughed to myself about it.

Ah, I see your review, LG! Maybe she'll write a better one next time.

Nov 11, 2008, 9:30pm (top)Message 64: littlegeek

It wasn't bad, just not her best.

Nov 11, 2008, 9:38pm (top)Message 65: tiegster

I just read Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist now I'm lost on what to read next. I should really read that last chapter in The Fellowship of the Ring.

Nov 12, 2008, 7:43am (top)Message 66: Ms_Bella

Okay so I finished Night World 1 and I am now thinking of doing a reread of twilight, HP, or Womens Murder club series... it is getting cold out so I figure I need to go back to a comfort book for a bit. I am also thinking that after Thanksgiving I am going to read A Charles Dickens Christmas

Nov 12, 2008, 8:53am (top)Message 67: biblioholic29

I decided, since my lunchtime/work read is on the heavy side, I'd go for a light fun reread at home, so I'm reading The Cove. I have the whole series and haven't read the last two yet, so I'll probably work my way through the whole thing. They're not great writing, but they're fun.

Nov 12, 2008, 10:33am (top)Message 68: Renald128

I just finished Blindness by José Saramago and Lemony Snicket: The Bad Beginning and I liked them both, I think that Saramago's book was unusual and very well written although I don't share the author's point of view on many things I still think it was an excellent book and I think I'm going to start reading Inkheart since I've heard so much of that book through here :D

Nov 12, 2008, 12:34pm (top)Message 69: LadyN

So far in October I have read My Booky Wook by Russell Brand, Middlesex, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and The Silver Sword. I am now reading Notes from an Exhibition.

Nov 12, 2008, 12:43pm (top)Message 70: lunacat

I'm two thirds of the way through The Doomsday Book and loving every second of it.

Nov 12, 2008, 4:58pm (top)Message 71: Espeon200

I finished Furies of Calderon because a friend suggested I read it since I like The Dresden Files, and I enjoyed it enough that I immediately checked the next book out from the library.

Then I picked up Dragon and Thief because it was next in my stack, but I was having trouble getting into it, so I set it aside.

I also just finished a reread of The King of Attolia because I felt like it.

Nov 12, 2008, 5:45pm (top)Message 72: 06nwingert

Thanks a bunch Espy, for adding another book to my already- overlong tbr list: Furies of Calderon. I looked at the book after you mentioned it, and since it looks good, I added it to my tbr pile. lol. ;-)

Nov 12, 2008, 6:14pm (top)Message 73: mindylou182

#68 Renald
Inkheart is a really good book. It's one of my favorites =)

Nov 12, 2008, 9:08pm (top)Message 74: lefty33

nwing (#72), sometimes when people talk about the awesome books they've just read, I skim over the name of the book so I am not tempted. And sometimes I just add it to the list. After all, at this point, what's one (or twenty) more on the pile?

Nov 12, 2008, 10:09pm (top)Message 75: 06nwingert

74, lefty: I know what you mean. When my tbr pile is about 60 book long, what's another 1 or 2... or 10?

Nov 12, 2008, 10:26pm (top)Message 76: cmbohn

So Kerian, which one on the enneagram are you? I just took the online test and apparently I'm a Helper. No surprise there.

I just finished Good Omens and now I'm ready to start Here Be Monsters.

Nov 13, 2008, 4:31am (top)Message 77: Kerian

#76 cmbohn:

Honestly, I was left a little confused. It's because of taking different versions online when I went to write my blog entry for the book.
I answered the questions in my book about two weeks ago. It said I was a questioner the most. The questioner is for the head - my heart was a helper and my gut instinct was an asserter. Taking different versions of the test online Tuesday, two tests told me I was a helper the most, that I was still a questioner, but that I was a perfectionist versus an asserter. I'm not sure what to make of gut instinct anymore.

. . .

I didn't finish my book today. I thought I would be reading during my sister's tests, but the lights were out during them and I was in the room with her. Five minutes to sleeping beauty, an actual hour to me. ;)

Nov 13, 2008, 5:14pm (top)Message 78: catbastet

I'm still reading The Science of Fear, and just finished Duchessina, which is by Caroline Meyer.

Nov 13, 2008, 6:47pm (top)Message 79: pollysmith

started Kay Hoopers, Amanda, today pretty good so far

Nov 13, 2008, 7:08pm (top)Message 80: foggidawn

I finished A Curse As Dark As Gold (very good book, by the way) and started on Chalice, the new Robin McKinley book. So far it's good. The style is closer to that of her earlier novels (which I tend to like best; I felt that the last two or three were rather weak).

Nov 13, 2008, 10:16pm (top)Message 81: lefty33

I'm glad you liked Curse, Foggi! I read it a couple months ago and really liked it. I hadn't heard McKinley had a new book! I'll have to look into that!

In 4 days our library is closing its youth section for a month because they're putting in new carpet and furniture. This means they are checking out the youth books for a month instead of the normal two weeks so they won't have to deal with incoming books. After work today I went and rented just about every title that caught my eye. I have a big, big stack. :D

Nov 14, 2008, 12:37am (top)Message 82: cmbohn

#77 - Hope you can figure it out. Mine was pretty much dead on, so I feel confident about it. But these tests are all in the way they're worded, so it's hard to tell for sure.

My son got me The Maze of Bones for my birthday and now I'm all into this 39 Clues thing. It's so much fun. I was playing with the website for hours.

Nov 14, 2008, 6:06pm (top)Message 83: 06nwingert

I'm reading Memoirs of an Anti-Semite (won't touchstone for some reason). When I read, I'll have to get out my audio copy of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince due to the recently released trailer. Also, in 2 weeks when I go home for Thanksgiving, I'll be able to read Harry, a History.

Nov 15, 2008, 8:06am (top)Message 84: grkmwk

Finished The Historian on the 3rd (wonderful, if a tad long), slogged through Fair and Tender Ladies for my bookclub read for a week before abandoning it, read New Moon earlier this week, and am now onto Eclipse. I was at work yesterday and happened to mention to my coworker that I'd devoured New Moon and didn't know what I'd do while waiting for Eclipse, as I was 44th on the waiting list at the Library. She turned around, walked to her office, and returned a moment later with both Eclipse and Breaking Dawn for me to borrow!!

The Messenger by Markus Zusak

Nov 15, 2008, 8:55am (top)Message 86: lefty33

#84 grkmwk, what a nice coworker!

#85 MrA, good choice! Is that your first Zusak book?

Nov 15, 2008, 5:08pm (top)Message 87: Espeon200

#85 — You'll have to tell me what you think of it when you're done Mr A. I loved the book, as you already know.

Nov 15, 2008, 9:16pm (top)Message 88: mindylou182

I finished Beauty today and I loved it!

Nov 15, 2008, 9:55pm (top)Message 89: foggidawn

#88 -- So glad you loved it! Beauty is quite possibly my favorite book. Have you read The Hero and the Crown or The Blue Sword yet? Those are by the same author, and I highly recommend them, as well.

Right now I'm reading Into the Woods by Lyn Gardner. It's pretty good, but not great. I've had it out from the library for almost a month, so I thought I had better read it.

(Edited for typos and touchstone wonkiness.)

#86: i've read The Book Thief lefty, it was great.

>#87: I surely will. Were you still after an Australian edition? This is just a 2007-edition paperback, it's all i have been able to find *shakes fist at hard-to-get books*.

Nov 15, 2008, 11:29pm (top)Message 91: Espeon200

#90 — I was sort of looking for a hardcover edition, but I don't even know if the book was printed in hardcover. I Wonder what the internet says... Well... it seems I gave you a Sisyphian task. I just checked the book's publisher (Pan Macmillan Australia) and they don't have a hard cover version listed. Nor even for The Book Thief, which seems weird (though your paperback of TBT looks much better than ours, in my opinion).

I have a paperback copy already, so I'm not too worried about it. Maybe you can tell me, though. What is a B-format Paperback? Foggi hasn't the foggiest. The page for The Book Thief is here.

Nov 16, 2008, 12:05am (top)Message 92: MrAndrew

Actually, this particular Sisyphus was slouched down behind the boulder having a smoke, hoping that Tartarus didn't notice. I don't take my tasks very seriously.

No idea what a B-format paperback is either. My copy is about 6x9inches, i would have called it trade-format (is that the right term?). I can't see reference to the format/binding type. We used to have another, smaller copy, which was good for the comfortness of reading and carrying. I would have called that mass-market.

Both my copes had that cover shown in the Pan Mcmillan site.

Nov 16, 2008, 8:47am (top)Message 93: mindylou182

89 Foggi
I haven't read those ones yet. I own Rose Daughter so I'll probably start that one soon.

I also started Dragon Keeper last night.

Nov 16, 2008, 10:40am (top)Message 94: littlegeek

Finished My Name is Will and now reading Can You Forgive Her.

Nov 16, 2008, 1:46pm (top)Message 95: lunacat

#89 Foggi and #93 mindylou

I second the recommendations for The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown, they rank VERY high up on my list of favourite books and I can read them again and again and again without getting bored or fed up.

Nov 16, 2008, 2:04pm (top)Message 96: cmbohn

Chalice is her new one. It's on my wish list. But Beauty is my favorite.

Now now, Maura11. Like my mother always used to say, if you don't have something nice to say, staple your tongue.

#99 — So your tongue is full of staple holes?

Nov 16, 2008, 4:12pm (top)Message 101: foggidawn

#96 -- I just read Chalice, and liked it (at least, better than Dragonhaven, which was the release before this one). It's not up there with Beauty and other of my absolute McKinley favorites, but it's one I'll read again.

Today's Crack me up score: MrA - 1, Espy - 1! Thanks to posts 99 and 100!

ETA: MrA did crack me up on elfster with his comment (optional). Should that count in the score?

I have finished my reread of the twilight Series... now I am rereading the HP series too... holidays are stressful, and these are my comfort books lol

Nov 16, 2008, 10:30pm (top)Message 104: jugglingpaynes

Just finished The Graveyard Book.
Maybe I'll read The indigo King next, before it's due back at the library.
I'm cursed with all of my library holds coming in at the same time.

Nov 16, 2008, 11:42pm (top)Message 105: kirbyowns

#102 compski- Sure. Why not? Any objections espy?

Sooooo.... I'm still working on Brisingr and The Paradise War. I'm about halfway through both.

Nov 17, 2008, 2:14pm (top)Message 106: Kerian

I put Brisingr down to read later. Rebel Angels is going poorly (?). It's hard to keep interest when I'm reading slow.

Nov 17, 2008, 4:52pm (top)Message 107: readafew

Read the first 4 books of "a Series of Unfortunate Events" last week with a couple other books mixed in. Currently reading Orcs, a book were the Orcs are the protagonists. not to bad so far.

Nov 19, 2008, 4:14am (top)Message 108: MsDonna

I'm reading Reading Lolita in Tehran. So far I'm really enjoying it, the writing is sublime and I haven't read a book for some time where I feel like I'm in the room just observing what is going on. While it would normally be an all-nighter I've decided to savior it for a while and read it in a few chapters at a time.

Nov 19, 2008, 6:30am (top)Message 109: Ms_Bella

Tonight or is it today? I finished HP/CS and started my reread of HP/PoA

Nov 19, 2008, 9:47am (top)Message 110: kirbyowns

I'm 2/3 of the way through Welsh Terrier.

Nov 19, 2008, 10:06am (top)Message 111: andusir06

I read Harry, a history and started Stone Cold but lost my book. So I picked up The Colour of Magic at a comic book store and am loving it so far.

Nov 20, 2008, 9:38am (top)Message 112: suge

I challenged myself to read 100 books this year, alas, I'm only up to 84 :( I don't know that I will make it.

I've been struggling thru Brisingr since the day it came out. I'm also reading Saint Maybe which is probably the most depressing book I've read since God don't like ugly and She's come undone. Gah. I'm almost finished with Nightlife and I'm half way thru Ender's Game, which is excellent.

Nov 20, 2008, 10:09am (top)Message 113: kirbyowns

I'm about 1/2 way through Brisingr, and 2/3 the way through Welsh Terrier. Brisingr is starting to go a little better for me.

I'm in the middle of Cybele's Secret. I really loved Wildwood Dancing (first book in that series), but am not quite as fond of Cybele's Secret.

I just started Dragon Rider again. And I finished The Terracotta Army, about China's First Emperor. It was really good.

Nov 20, 2008, 1:43pm (top)Message 117: Tigercrane

I tried to read Mister B. Gone but put it down about halfway through. Reading Clive Barker's stuff reminds me of middle school kids playing the "What's Grosser Than Gross?" game.

Nov 20, 2008, 6:50pm (top)Message 120: mindylou182

I started A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf for AP Comp. I read a couple pages... so far it's interesting.

Nov 21, 2008, 8:25am (top)Message 121: biblioholic29

Started Broad Street this morning, my Early Reviewer. It's not an ARC though, it's the actual book. It's the author's first book and the publisher's first book and the author works for the publisher, so it came signed, which was pretty cool. The publishing company is for Philly based writers, and the book is based in mid-90's Philly, so it should be somewhat familiar for me. :)

Nov 21, 2008, 1:56pm (top)Message 122: 06nwingert

In English, we're reading Gulliver's Travels and A Modest Proposal. I'm listening to half-blood prince and reading Memoirs of an Anti-Semite. I can't wait to go home next week to read Harry, A History and possibily Charlie Bone and the Shadow.

Also, less than 2 weeks until Tales of Beedle the Bard!

Nov 21, 2008, 3:13pm (top)Message 123: littlegeek

We have to do a group read of Beedle the Bard.

#123 -- Oh, we so do! After the holidays, perhaps. I suspect that many HE'ers have that on their Christmas list!

Nov 21, 2008, 3:38pm (top)Message 125: kirbyowns

Nov 21, 2008, 8:42pm (top)Message 126: catbastet

JP's getting it for her birthday, so we'll have it!

I finished The Graveyard Book (I really loved it, even though it made me cry at the end), and Eleanor of Aquitaine: Medieval Queen (which was great!).

Nov 21, 2008, 9:33pm (top)Message 127: lefty33

And Graveyard is now on my TBR list.

I am almost done with Brisingr!! I also started my ER book, The Jumping-Off Place.

Nov 21, 2008, 9:36pm (top)Message 128: tiegster

Currently reading The Dark is Rising for the first time.

Now stop posting about all these great sounding books...my TBR list is inconceivably long.

An Anthropologist On Mars
Interview With The Vampire - Again... to see if I can finish it
Harry Potter And the Chamber Of Secrets - Again... just because

Nov 21, 2008, 10:17pm (top)Message 130: Renald128

#129: I struggled to finish Interview with the vampire too!!! It's just that I consider Anne Rice as a great author but her books move a little too slow for my taste. Let me know what you think of it when you finish it.

P.S. GO ELLEVEE!!! U can do it.

Nov 21, 2008, 10:21pm (top)Message 131: ellevee

#130 Thanks! I'm writing my own vampire book (but it's funny/scary, and has no vampire romance, and the vampires are BAD) so I'm partly reading it as research to see how other people characterize their vampires. But mainly, I don't get it. I still think Louis is whiny and Lestat is boringly obnoxious. Maybe I was spoiled by too much 'Buffy' at a young age.

But I AM giving it another shot, and I WILL succeed this time! Thanks for the support!

Nov 21, 2008, 11:58pm (top)Message 132: Kerian

I just read The Diamond of Drury Lane. I enjoyed it -- it reminds me of something, but I can't think what. I wouldn't say it was great writing, but it was a fun read.

have you watched the Twilight movie yet??
It made me love them even more.

Nov 23, 2008, 2:02pm (top)Message 139: foxfire

I've just started Roads to Quoz. I'm also about halfway through A Tale of Two Cities, and recently started No Country for Old Men, though I'm not particularly enjoying it.

Out of them all, my favorite will probably end up being Quoz.

#138 mindylou182: Not yet, but I hope to go soon. Of course, this coming week is rather crazy busy with multiple Thanksgiving gatherings with friends and family, so I might have to wait 'til early December. I'm really excited, though!

Nov 23, 2008, 8:09pm (top)Message 141: mindylou182

I liked it a lot. As much detail as the book had, I think they did a pretty good job picking out details for the movie.

I've been rereading the Little House books -- about all I can handle, since I am not feeling well. Now I've moved on to a reread of The Outlaws of Sherwood. More comfort reading.

Nov 25, 2008, 10:13pm (top)Message 146: compskibook

144 Thanks for the warning, LG. I have read Autobiography of a Face so based on what I know, should I get one box of Kleenex or two?

Nov 25, 2008, 10:34pm (top)Message 147: lefty33

I finished The Jumping-Off Place! I will definitely be done with Brisingr by the end of Thanksgiving break. Or perhaps I'll just finish it tomorrow to get on a "finishing book" roll.

Nov 25, 2008, 10:40pm (top)Message 148: jugglingpaynes

I just finished Indigo King which I liked much better than the second book in the series. Next I think I'll read Wesley the Owl.

Nov 25, 2008, 11:09pm (top)Message 149: ellevee

I read On Chesil Beach today, and liked it more than I expected. Now I want to finish rereading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets before starting on something more intensive... *looks at TBR pile and winces*

Nov 26, 2008, 9:43am (top)Message 152: foggidawn

I lost my page yesterday when Tumbledore took my bookmark from Rebel Angels. I still need to find it. I won't get to LT much so I will say that the next book I read will be a two-in-one of Lewis Carrol's Alice stories. I might start it before finishing the other book.

Nov 26, 2008, 1:40pm (top)Message 156: suge

I'm (crying) reading Untamed and Moonshine. I've all but abandoned Brisingr and Saint Maybe, but I don't want to give up on them.

Foggi I loved Wicked Lovely. I saw a reference to its "sequel" Ink Exchange yesterday in a book I'm reading.

Nov 26, 2008, 1:59pm (top)Message 157: Kerian

You're just now getting to Untamed?! You bought it the day it came out, didn't you? ;)

I know what reference you're taking about for Ink Exchange. It was in P.C. Cast's book.

Nov 26, 2008, 2:10pm (top)Message 158: biblioholic29

Now that I've seen the movie and it won't make me crazy, I'm rereading the series. I finished Twilight on Monday and have about 200 pages left of Eclipse (I read the last chapter (Vote) of New Moon, but didn't feel like plodding through the whole thing right now). I mostly want to reread Breaking Dawn. I'm also trying really hard to not read what Stephenie posted of Midnight Sun, I don't think it's ethically right, but I'm dying to get inside Edward's head.

Nov 26, 2008, 4:13pm (top)Message 159: grkmwk

#158 bib - As the copyright/IP educator at my library, I was horrified by what happened to Ms. Meyer with regard to Midnight Sun. Unfortunately, misuse of (intentional and otherwise), and outright theft of, intellectual property, and moral rights (which are NOT protected by US copyright law), happens frequently, although usually not with someone as well-known and beloved as Ms. Meyer. However, after her initial anger and hurt, I believe she handled the situation well, in that she made the excerpt available on her site for her fans to read so they would not feel guilty or compromised in reading it, while also giving everyone a great lesson on copyright and its importance. Because of that, I decided to read it, as I've had significant withdrawal issues since finishing Breaking Dawn last week. I'm really glad I did, although after finishing it a little while ago, I'm sad all over again.

Over the holiday weekend, I am going to attempt to get past my Twilight fixation by reading my book club's December pick: Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters.

Nov 26, 2008, 4:40pm (top)Message 160: Ms_Bella

I think I have settled on reading Pet Semetary or Bag of Bones Both seem just right for the holiday....haha

Nov 26, 2008, 5:45pm (top)Message 161: mindylou182

I finished Dragon Keeper yesterday. Hopefully I'll be able to finish Ptolemy's Gate soon. I've been very lazy lately.

Nov 26, 2008, 7:35pm (top)Message 162: kirbyowns

My goal this long weekend is to finish Brisingr.

Nov 26, 2008, 7:45pm (top)Message 163: Renald128

#160: Ms_Bella, I read Pet Sematary and really liked it, and I can totally see the resemblance between it an thanksgiving *says it in a sarcastic tone* lol

Nov 28, 2008, 9:45pm (top)Message 164: biblioholic29

#159: Thank you. Having just finished my reread of Breaking Dawn, I think I probably will break down and read it. I'll just continue to hope that she'll be able to finish it someday, at which time I will happily purchase a copy and hopefully alleviate my guilt for reading it free! I hope you like Crocodile on the Sandbank, that's one of my favorite series and definitely my favorite mystery series. :)

Nov 28, 2008, 9:50pm (top)Message 165: 06nwingert

Finished Harry, A History two days ago. It's a great relaxing read, which brings back some of my nostalgic Harry Potter-related memories. I started Frostbite two days ago and will finish tonight. Tomorrow, I'll go to the library and get a book (or two) from my uber long tbr list to read at school.

ETA: at library; got Fordor's France 2008 , Chew on This, and Kingdom Coming: the rise of Christian Nationalism.

I finished Brisingr! :D You can do it, Kirby! It gets better the farther you get.

I have a huge stack from the library right now, so I'll pick something from that next. Or perhaps I'll finish something else on my "currently reading" list.

Nov 29, 2008, 11:08am (top)Message 167: lunacat

Finished a reread of A Town Like Alice, one of my favourite 'romantic' books. Good for when I'm feeling tired or rundown!

Now started The Summer Tree which I didn't think I'd like at first, but I'm giving it a fair chance.

Nov 29, 2008, 2:51pm (top)Message 168: Espeon200

I've recently had to return my entire library stack unread. It's amazing how much time a job takes up. I need to find a way to get paid to read books... or play video games...

Nov 29, 2008, 3:22pm (top)Message 169: jugglingpaynes

No proofreading jobs are open?

Nov 29, 2008, 8:07pm (top)Message 170: lefty33

I read Changeling by Delia Sherman today. I haven't sat down to read a book in one sitting in a while, and it was one of the shorter ones off my library stack. This book has nothing to do with the movie that recently came out, by the way. It's about fairies and New York Between (an alternate, fairy-run NYC). A nice little fantasy adventure story.

Espy, too bad those kinds of jobs don't seem to hire often. Though maybe proofreading.

Nov 29, 2008, 8:46pm (top)Message 171: Ms_Bella

I am still having issues on what to read out of my TBR next... I just can't decide.

Nov 29, 2008, 8:50pm (top)Message 172: tiegster

I think it's going to be A Holiday for Murder or maybe something from The Complete Sherlock Holmes Treasury next.

Nov 29, 2008, 9:21pm (top)Message 173: jugglingpaynes

I don't think they hire proofreaders as much as they used to. And judging by some of the books I've read lately, they don't even hire editors.

Nov 30, 2008, 10:31am (top)Message 179: lefty33

#173 True!!

After finishing Changeling, I started Here Be Monsters! by Alan Snow (why are authors not touchstoning lately?). It's mildly amusing, but not as good as I was hoping.

Nov 30, 2008, 12:43pm (top)Message 180: mindylou182

I've been reading Ptolemy's Gate lately. Its getting really good.

Nov 30, 2008, 12:45pm (top)Message 181: Ms_Bella

Nov 30, 2008, 1:22pm (top)Message 182: Kerian

Hi, holly! One of my sisters wondered the same thing about that book.

I'm still reading Rebel Angels. I haven't really been getting much reading in.

Nov 30, 2008, 3:55pm (top)Message 183: grkmwk

#164: I, too, hope she finishes Midnight Sun, as I will also buy it, both because the partial draft was tantalizing and because if she does have the courage and strength to finish it, I want her to have rockin' sales to assuage any lingering doubt or anger over the leak. And thanks for the good word about the Elizabeth Peters book. I didn't get a chance to start it over the weekend, but will soon!

Nov 30, 2008, 9:17pm (top)Message 184: hollybeee

Kerian: I did read Son of a Witch and A Lion Among Men and I did end up disappointed.

I am currently reading The Wordy Shipmates by Sarah Vowell and One for the Money as my throw away read.

Nov 30, 2008, 9:55pm (top)Message 185: biblioholic29

I finished Midnight Sun, but I'm still unwilling to leave the world of Twilight. I noticed that the chapter titles for the two books are the same, so I decided to read them somewhat simultaneously. Read a chapter of Twilight to get it from Bella's P.O.V. and then a chapter from Midnight Sun. Of course, I can only do this for half the chapters, but it should be fun. I have to say, I think I prefer reading Edward...his insecurities are less grating for some reason.

Nov 30, 2008, 9:59pm (top)Message 186: lefty33

I prefer Edward's version too, Bib. Less ... girly? Or maybe it's that forbidden quality to it that makes it more exciting. No, really, I think it's just that the Cullens are far more interesting than, well, humans. And from Edward's side, we're surrounded by Cullens.

Dec 1, 2008, 8:25am (top)Message 188: kirbyowns

I did the same thing. Marley and Me was so worth it though. I cried for the last 3 or so chapters.
*hands jp a tissue*

Dec 1, 2008, 8:41am (top)Message 189: lefty33

Was it Marley and Me, JP? If so, *handing over several more tissues*

I hope you enjoyed the book nonetheless!

Dec 1, 2008, 10:54am (top)Message 190: jugglingpaynes

It was Wesley the Owl, but thanks for the warning. I'll take my time before picking up Marley and Me.

My book was hilarious for most of it. I kept reading passages out loud to the family. But the author does mention at the last chapter: "The one thing I hate about animal stories is that after you'ver almost read the entire book and you really care about the animal, they go and tell you all about how the animal died." She even tells you to stop reading there if you don't want to hear about it. But I have a compulsive need to finish what I start.

Dec 1, 2008, 2:55pm (top)Message 192: Kerian

#184 holly:
I am sad to hear it! I still need to read book three.

RE Midnight Sun,
I have only read the first chapter. I refuse to read the thirteen or so chapters available online until Meyer has it published.

#187 --> *big hugs for jp!* I have done the same thing. I know it is very sad. :(

Dec 1, 2008, 7:51pm (top)Message 193: grkmwk

bib & lefty - I too found Edward's POV to be much more engaging than Bella's. Strictly as a character, I found Edward much more compelling throughout the Twilight series, so I'm not surprised by my preference for Midnight Sun. Of course, this only makes me that much more eager for her to finish!

Dec 1, 2008, 9:03pm (top)Message 194: biblioholic29

lefty & grkmwk: I agree with both of your reasons. I think it helps to understand his point of view too, it makes him a little more....human....weirdly. It's nice to see that he's almost more insecure than Bella (but conversely makes me even more upset by the way Kristin Stewart played her in the movie)

Dec 2, 2008, 1:59pm (top)Message 195: suge

157--> Yep. I bought it the very day, but with one book (Twilight) or another (Twilight) I hadn't been able to get into it. It was great btw. I really like that series.
