I am looking for as near as straight-to-English translations of the Vulgate and Luther bibles as may be.
What I am *not* looking for is English translations of the same *sources* used for the Vulgate and Luther bibles, or English translations of those bibles that made use of other, intervening English translations (ahemKJVahem)). I am not looking for faithful English renditions of original biblical texts but faithful English versions of the Vulgate and Luther bibles. Basically, I would like to read the Vulgate and Luther's versions of the bible but I read neither Latin nor German and have neither time nor inclination to learn — hence the hope for English translations of them. And I'd like to avoid English translations that make use of the KJV (such as Challoner's), if possible.
Any suggestions?
Before
William Tyndale, the first to translate to English from the
original languages, which you don't want, was the fascinating early Reformation scholar
John Wycliffe (probably with the help of others, "the Lollards") who came up with a "straight-to-English translation of the Vulgate" -- I'm over on Amazon now looking for you to see what's available of the Wycliffe Bibles. Both his first & second names are spelled in different ways, so try John, Jan, Wycliffe, Wyclif, etc.
Here's
Wycliffe New Testament 1388 -- but I can't remember (I've seen this) if the font is regular Roman print or if it was the hard-to-read calligraphy looking font like the picture on the cover. Either the Wycliffe or the Tyndale modern reprint was like that, but I can't remember which, but it popped up in LT touchstones, so might want to ask an LT user that actually has that Bible on them.
The Wycliffe Old Testament appears to be available in several volumes, here's the Amazon page for Volume One:
