Nov 5, 2008, 5:08pm (top)Message 26: cal8769I'm so lucky. After many dry months I got Low Man by T.J. Vargo. Nov 5, 2008, 5:11pm (top)Message 27: loopyloo100>25 I believe that to be true over the last couple of months, but prior to that some books were offered just to the UK and so then there was a higher chance of obtaining one. Nov 5, 2008, 5:30pm (top)Message 31: elizabeth_sNothing again, but at least the next batch will be posted soon! And I hope someone will want to get rid of Cracked Up to Be when they're done with it. Not including this book, I have snagged five books and have reviewed the four I have received. Still no "Any Given Doomsday" Seeing how I only posted one favorable review, and yet I snagged The Uncommon Reader, I guess I am proof positive that they do not judge the content of the reviews. This will be my second ER book. I actually kind of hope that it won't get here too soon because I just checked out 6 books from the library, which will take me at least the two week circulation period to get through, without any distractions. It's funny, because I actually contemplated checking out The Uncommon Reader from the library! Nov 6, 2008, 2:00am (top)Message 83: lonelyfillyI'm getting Rocket Man by William Elliott Hazelgrove. Nov 6, 2008, 9:49am (top)Message 96: WildMaggieWaiting for Coyote's Call which is clearly an excellent match with my library, so a no-brainer. I'm very pleased and looking forward to it. I have to admit I would have really, really liked one of the graphic novels (and I do have a couple similar cataloged) but I'm not surprised they went elsewhere. Also still waiting for September's Museum of Human Beings. Have to check the other thread to see if other ERers have gotten theirs yet. Nov 6, 2008, 10:31am (top)Message 97: CityLoveI got Broad Street by Christine Weiser. I am excited to read it! Nov 6, 2008, 10:34am (top)Message 98: mskeensI snagged Evermore by Alyson Noel. This month I got Jane Eyre the Graphic Novel Should I be excited? I have no idea what a graphic novel is. Is it in cartoon form?! Well it sounds interesting and I love Jane Eyre. (The book, that is!) - TT Nov 6, 2008, 11:32am (top)Message 101: jensviewI got The Gates of Trevalyan by Jacquelyn Cook and I am so excited. This is just the sort of book I am in the mood for, a Civil War time romance novel. Nov 6, 2008, 12:42pm (top)Message 102: momgeeHey jensview - I read and reviewed that book on my blog http://www.kayespenguinpost.blogspot.com I loved it! You'll enjoy it, its one of the best books I read this year. Nov 6, 2008, 1:25pm (top)Message 103: streamsongI got Moving Your Aging Parents: Fulfilling Their Needs and Yours Before... by Nancy Daniel Wesson. It wasn't my absolute first choice, but should have useful information for me--my parents are in their 80's and dealing with health issues, so it's just a matter of time before they choose to live somewhere smaller. Nov 6, 2008, 2:06pm (top)Message 104: Bitter_Grace100> A graphic novel is a novel in comic book format. If you click on the publisher info under the description of Jane Eyre (on the request page) and then click on the black book cover at the bottom of the publisher website, it will show you what the first few pages look like. Definitely be excited! It looks like a really great book, and you were one of the lucky few of very, very many ;) Nov 6, 2008, 2:17pm (top)Message 105: TheTortoiseThanks BG - I checked it out and the artwork is excellent - now I am excited! I haven't read a comic for about 50 years! But a classic comic is something else. I can't wait! I feel like s big kid again. Whoooooo! - TT Nov 6, 2008, 2:29pm (top)Message 106: WildMaggieNew comment from Abby says that Waiting for Coyote's Call will not be a physical copy but reviewed through an online site. Having read some of the thread on the October bonus book, distributed electronically, I'm hoping for the best but a little less excited. I spend a lot of time sitting in front of a computer already (seem to be doing that right now). Well, guess the worse-case will be that I take a lot longer to get through the book in this format than I would a physical copy. Message edited by its author, Nov 6, 2008, 2:29pm. Nov 6, 2008, 6:15pm (top)Message 111: momgeejust out of curiosty, checked out a lot of book winner's profiles it seems you have to be a paid member to snag a book. There were a token two or three who aren't hmmmmm interesting Nov 6, 2008, 6:21pm (top)Message 112: littlebookwormI think that you're wrong there, momgee. Paid members have more books than free members, which ups their odds of matching with the ER books. If someone only has 200 books, their library just isn't likely to be the best match because they probably don't have that many similar books. If they had plenty of similar books in their small library, they'd get the ER book, but their odds are less than someone who has 5 times as many books cataloged and thus a much greater variety and chance of hitting on a close match. At least, that is how it seems to me. *edited for clarity Message edited by its author, Nov 6, 2008, 6:24pm. Nov 6, 2008, 6:34pm (top)Message 113: Grace2133I got Jane Eyre the Graphic Novel. Thanks, Al. Oh, yeah, and thanks to Tim and Abby too. I love LT! Nov 6, 2008, 7:48pm (top)Message 117: crasoJust curious, why did a person who has never read a graphic novel get one? Does the algorithm not search tags? Nov 6, 2008, 8:00pm (top)Message 118: Moomin_Mama>100 & 117: I'd say that the 78 classic English novels in The Tortoise's library did it. I'd trust their judgement on whether Jane Eyre worked as a graphic novel. Maybe the publishers are hoping to attract a different type of reader to the graphic novel, rather than getting fans of graphic novels switched on to classics. The Tortoise would be a pretty good reviewer in that case. Nov 6, 2008, 8:08pm (top)Message 119: kaelireneeI snagged Phraseology-which is certainly because of all the etymology books I have in my collection. Woohoo! Nov 6, 2008, 8:17pm (top)Message 120: Esta1923Mixed blessing! Nov 6, 2008, 11:29pm (top)Message 123: CutestLilBookwormWow, I'm supposed to receive my first early review book The Low Man by T.J. Vargo. Looking forward to it :-) Nov 7, 2008, 3:22am (top)Message 124: rastaphrog*sigh* no snag for me again this month. Looks like Tales From Outer SUburbia and Phraseology will be going on my 'To buy' list. (Gawd, between books I now own and have on my to be read list and things I still want to get, I'll have enough reading material for a few months!*G*) If my friend out in California posts in her blog about snagging yet another book tho, I may have to take a trip out there and hit her over the head with the thickest dictionary I can find. *G* Congrats to all those who got a book! Nov 7, 2008, 10:48am (top)Message 125: bnbookladyI got Things the Grandchildren Should Know and I'm super excited about it. I almost bought it last week but held off in hopes that ER would come through for me. Woohoo! For those interested in Phraseology, I'm doing daily posts with fun facts, one letter of the alphabet at a time, at The Book Lady's Blog. Nov 7, 2008, 12:09pm (top)Message 126: sydamyI snagged Bitten. No complaining here, but I was wondering if the agorithim checks where you are located. I'm in Canada and now my last two ER books were Canadian. I do have some Canadian authors in my library, but it is sure not weighted that way. Does location have an impact?? or was it only coincidence...twice? Message edited by its author, Nov 7, 2008, 12:11pm. Nov 7, 2008, 12:47pm (top)Message 127: lasperschlagerI got Marco Flamenco and am looking forward to reading it. Nov 7, 2008, 1:50pm (top)Message 128: writemegI also snagged Courtney Summers's Cracked Up To Be! This is my first ER, too, so I'm really eager to get it. Sounds good! Nov 7, 2008, 2:11pm (top)Message 129: GoldengroveI snagged 'A Christmas Carol' graphic novel - really looking forward to it, I love Dickens and can't wait to see what the artist's done with it. I am on a 5 month streak now so I hope I don't jinx myself! Nov 8, 2008, 12:09am (top)Message 133: anysia>111, I think 112 is right. There's a better chance of making a match, the more books you have in your library. There is a connection, but only because the number of books you can add is limited in the free account, not because the algorithm looks at the status of the account. Nov 8, 2008, 1:12am (top)Message 134: SuziRI got Echoes from the Dead by Johan Theorin and it arrived today! Nov 8, 2008, 6:44am (top)Message 135: TheTortoise>117 & 118: I agree with moomin-mama that “The Tortoise would be a pretty good reviewer in that case.” The 78 classics in my library are a fraction of the classic novels I have read throughout my lifetime. So it is definitely a perfect match. Also, I am now intrigued and want to check out more Classic Comics – so this is working: “Maybe the publishers are hoping to attract a different type of reader to the graphic novel, rather than getting fans of graphic novels switched on to classics.” I am not a naturally Graphic Comic reader, but I am a Classic Books reader who is now interested in Graphic Comics of Classic Books. - TT Nov 8, 2008, 8:34am (top)Message 136: ireed110I'm psyched! Nov 8, 2008, 10:03pm (top)Message 145: Esta1923Reading "Waiting For the Coyote's Call" on line. (Due to age of my coputer am reading it on Victor's when he's not there.) So far book is interesting, and it overlaps many on my shelves. Nov 9, 2008, 12:35am (top)Message 146: aviddivaI thought I posted but can't find the post, so forgive me if this is a duplication. I snagged Soldier's Heart, which kind of surprised me because I didn't remember having requested it! It's not my usual sort of read, but the mighty algorithm has so far been pretty good at matching me well, so I'm looking forward to "reading outside the box" this time! Nov 9, 2008, 12:52am (top)Message 147: CatieNRocket Man for me. This is my second ER book. Thanks LT! Nov 9, 2008, 5:04am (top)Message 148: foof2youBeyond Belief by Josh Hamilton, saw an interview on Real Sports looking forward to reading it. Nov 9, 2008, 10:52am (top)Message 149: bjtiltI didn't snag anything, as usual. I have never received an ER book. Oh well, I'm glad for the rest of you. Nov 9, 2008, 11:28am (top)Message 150: DevourerOfBooks>149 It seems that if a good knitting or crocheting book comes up you'd be first on the algorithm's list. It can only match to what is in your library, though, so you are unlikely to get any fiction that you like. Nov 9, 2008, 11:48am (top)Message 151: SqueakyChu--> 149 A suggestion. Perhaps you can start adding fiction that you've read to your LibraryThing library but tag them "read and released" or any other tag name you desire to separate them from your actual Library. You may then have a better chance (no promises, though!) of being in the running to receive an Early Reviewer book. Nov 9, 2008, 12:49pm (top)Message 152: macygmaI got zip this month but that's okay because I usually do snag a copy and am behind in reading overall. Hopeful for November's book, though! Nov 9, 2008, 5:53pm (top)Message 153: stypulkoskiI also got a copy of The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett. I'm pretty excited. : Nov 9, 2008, 6:23pm (top)Message 154: pandora05I got The Gates Of Trevalyan...my first arc win from this site...I'm very excited. Months and Months of trying and I finally got one - YEAH!!! Nov 9, 2008, 10:09pm (top)Message 155: JeephpyI got Gladiatrix by Russell Whitfield. I am so excited! Yea! Nov 9, 2008, 10:10pm (top)Message 156: brendaholmesI also got The Gates Of Trevalyan. Nov 10, 2008, 12:47am (top)Message 157: vintage_booksI'm very excited to have already received The Amish Cook at Home: Simple Pleasures of Food, Family, and Faith by Kevin Williams. On a quick glance, two words: Absolutely beautiful! And a couple other thoughts: The publisher spent over $10 to get this book to me quickly! They should be complimented on their kindess. I have over 115 cookbooks listed in my library so far. Based on the above comments about the algorithem, this appears to have contributed to me being chosen. vintage_books Message edited by its author, Nov 10, 2008, 12:48am. Nov 10, 2008, 10:18am (top)Message 158: TrishNYCDoes tagging your books really help you as concerns the algorithim? I joined ER sometime this year and I have since gotten 5 books including one for this month and I have nary a book tagged. Anyways I snagged The Gates of Trevalyan by Jacqyelyn Cook. Nov 10, 2008, 11:09am (top)Message 159: SqueakyChu--> 157 and 158 Does tagging your books really help you as concerns the algorithim? It is probably is not the main factor, but I think it helps. I also received The Amish Cook at Home: Simple Pleasures of Food, Family, and Faith by Kevin Williams (which I, too, think is gorgeous, vintage_books!). I have many books in my library tagged either "recipes" (23), "cookbooks" (12), "baking" (11) or (...well, you get the idea!). Message edited by its author, Nov 10, 2008, 11:11am. Nov 10, 2008, 4:00pm (top)Message 160: anysiaI have only seen tagging referenced as a deciding factor if you tag books that have NOT been tagged by anyone else. I rarely tag my books and I seem to be on the algorithms good side more often than not lately (which could change at any moment). Nov 11, 2008, 11:25am (top)Message 161: daisy32I snagged The Uncommon Reader. Very happy about that! Nov 11, 2008, 11:36am (top)Message 162: lesliecpThis message has been deleted by its author. Nov 11, 2008, 11:38am (top)Message 163: Jim53I got all the books I requested from October's batch, which was none. I really just wasn't inspired. November's list is a different story. Nov 11, 2008, 11:39am (top)Message 164: lesliecpI got Things the Grandchildren Should Know. I can't wait to get my hands on it and read it! Nov 11, 2008, 11:42pm (top)Message 165: pandora05I don't know about the tagging thing - because I had all of mine just as read or reading the last couple months but recently added a bunch of tags and this is the first time I've been selected to win a arc here. If it helped that's awesome and I'll keep doing it. Nov 12, 2008, 10:48am (top)Message 166: jhedlundAfter several dry months, I snagged Peripheral Vision. It's nice to be back in the action. Nov 12, 2008, 11:45am (top)Message 167: eawsmomI snagged "The Gates of Trevelyan." I have been very fortunate and received one ER book each month since I joined the ER group in June. Not sure why the algorithm likes me, but I'm not complaining. Doubt I will get anything in November, though, as there was only one book which looked the least bit appealing to me and there were already hordes of requests for it. And I'm still waiting for my July book, for what that's worth! Nov 16, 2008, 8:12pm (top)Message 168: paeoniaI'm a first time reviewer. I snagged tales from outer suburbia by shaun tan, which is a lovely book to hold and to look at - a kind of hybrid between prose and graphic novel. I wouldn't mind reviewing something every month - fingers crossed! Nov 17, 2008, 10:09am (top)Message 169: Sean191I got my first and it actually made it to my apartment last night (my landlord dropped it off). Will be reading http://www.librarything.com/work/3403916 as soon as I finish the book I'm reading now - probably by my subway ride home from work tomorrow. Nov 17, 2008, 10:09am (top)Message 170: Sean191Hmm...I was going for Me Chi And Bruce Lee. I guess I have to figure out how to post titles :( Nov 17, 2008, 10:51am (top)Message 171: MrsLeeSean - You just use the square brackets around the words of the title. See the light grey words next to the text box when you are writing a post? Those will tell you how. Nov 17, 2008, 10:53am (top)Message 172: LibrarysCatAfter months of no snagging, I am getting Gates of Trevalyan by Jacquelyn Cook. I am very excited and hope that I enjoy this historical novel. Nov 17, 2008, 3:24pm (top)Message 173: medievalmamaHi, 141 Madcow299 and 142 MusicMom41 -- I got The Last Gifts also -- received it the day before I actually got the notice, in fact. I'm not on a church staff, but I do Lay Eucharist Visits, and I seem to get the psych, abuse, death-and-dying type books. I devoured it in one night and have been rereading bits and pieces since -- loved it. Guess the algorithim knows what it's doing although I would SOOOOOOO love some fiction!!! Nov 17, 2008, 3:43pm (top)Message 174: Sean191It's kind of ironic that I'm on this site and I don't bother to read instructions... thanks MrsLee! :) So...here it is with everything right. Me Chi And Bruce Lee Nov 17, 2008, 3:44pm (top)Message 175: medievalmamaI teach with Jack Riggs and have been in a writer's group with him and REALLY wanted to review his book. After forty years of marriage and twenty-three years in the same house, we moved to an apartment a couple months ago. We're paying $290/month on storage because we can't decide/agree on what to keep (although we have agreed on many things to give away - there's just too much!). So THANK YOU! to Abby and Algorithm and most especially to Victor of Loving Healing Press, for the perfect book to help us through this (not-so-little) crisis. Nov 23, 2008, 5:49pm (top)Message 182: bonsamI just signed up to be an Early Reviewer....when does the December list come out? thanks Nov 23, 2008, 6:02pm (top)Message 183: DevourerOfBooks>182 I'm not sure if you did or not, but it is still possible to request books from the November batch, that batch is actually open another whole week almost from this very minute. There were hints of Twilight in here however it had it's own twists and turns. Ever - What a beautiful name for a character, she is haunted by her families death until she can finally let it go with the help of her handsome dark and mysterious boyfriend. The teens were well portrayed in this book. A very good Read and was very glad to add it to my collection. Thank you again LT for having good books available to us as member for Early Reviews. I snagged this book, too. Unfortunately, it still hasn't arrived. Did you get yours?
