What are you reading this hectic holiday month? Seasonal selections, or same-old, same-old? I'm finishing off my reread of The Outlaws of Sherwood, and then I plan to start Wicked Lovely. I'm reading Queen of Subtleties, another tudor fiction novel. And not the best I've ever read either. It's written from alternating points of view - Anne Boleyn writing to Elizabeth from the tower, and the King's confectioner over the course of a year a little while before. For me, the character voices aren't different enough, and so far I'm wondering what the point of it all is.... I'm determined to finish though. Dec 1, 2008, 8:17am (top)Message 3: pollysmithI am reading Brisingr Ha, ha, ha. Me too! I'm like on page 306 or something. This book is going soooo sloooowwwww. The last 300-ish were much faster, Kirby. Hang in there! :) I will definitely reread Letters from Father Christmas again this year. It's one of my favorite holiday reads, and it's not even a proper book. Oh Foggi I hope you like Wicked Lovely I loved it! I decided that I am not ready to leave the twilight world yet... so I am going to read Midnight Sun and hope that I will be ready to move on... Dec 1, 2008, 10:50am (top)Message 7: elbakeroneI've been away from reading in favor of writing so here's the list I hope to tackle in December: Rocket Man - reading now The Warded Man First Among Sequels A Feast for Crows The Invention of Hugo Cabret I'm reading The city of ember (well about to start it) and I'm also starting Do androids dream and I hope I can finish Flashback that for one reason or another I put it away :P I wont be able to read any books this month because I have my exams next week:( Dec 1, 2008, 12:02pm (top)Message 10: kirbyownsWell, after your exams you should have plenty of time for reading! And reading books to study for exams counts. Dec 1, 2008, 4:06pm (top)Message 11: mindylou182I'm going to finish Ptolemy's Gate tonight. Then I'll probably move onto Beast because it has been sitting on my side table for too long. Dec 1, 2008, 7:36pm (top)Message 12: grkmwkStarted Crocodile on the Sandbank at lunch today. After that, not sure. Either something totally engrossing (Mists of Avalon perhaps?) or fun rereads (Harry Potter probably). There will definitely be some seasonal reads, such as The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree, A Christmas Memory, and The Night Before Christmas, as well as daily readings from Watch for the Light. #7 - elbakerone: The Invention of Hugo Cabret was one of my favorite reads this year. Enjoy! Dec 1, 2008, 7:59pm (top)Message 13: cmbohnDragon Flight is next on my list. I loved the first one. Dec 1, 2008, 9:07pm (top)Message 14: mindylou182Officially finished Ptolemy's Gate and I loved it =D Dec 1, 2008, 9:43pm (top)Message 15: Kerian#2 LadyN: I just realized I've read that book. It was the first historical fiction book I ever read. I agree, I've read better. I hope it gets better before you finish it! (I can hardly remember the story - it's been years.) Message edited by its author, Dec 1, 2008, 9:45pm. Dec 1, 2008, 9:53pm (top)Message 16: kirbyownsI just ordered Harry, a History due to many of you liking it. Dec 1, 2008, 10:31pm (top)Message 17: lefty33I'm glad you liked Ptolemy's Gate, Mindy! Did you think it the best of the three, or did you like Amulet of Samarkand better? Dec 1, 2008, 10:38pm (top)Message 18: KerianI wasn't going to get Harry, A History, either, but have to agree everyone's interest in it is making me change my mind. (See where that touchstones?!) Dec 2, 2008, 6:43am (top)Message 19: LadyN15 - K I think my problem with it is the dichotomy (sp?) between having one charater we know a great deal about from history, alternating with a character we know nothing about at all. Because of this, there's a constant niggle in the back of my head throughout the Lucy Cornwallis chapters which keeps saying "this is completely made up. None of this happened", which jars with me. We shall see... Dec 2, 2008, 9:22am (top)Message 20: MrAndrewThe Sunday Philosophy Club. I'm reading it on different days though, not just sunday. I'm a rebel. Dec 2, 2008, 9:26am (top)Message 21: pollysmithIn addition to Brisingr I have begun a Terry Pratchett titled "Small Gods" Dec 2, 2008, 9:40am (top)Message 22: MrAndrewI liked small gods, polly. Dec 2, 2008, 9:45am (top)Message 23: pollysmithgood I've enjoyed it so far Dec 2, 2008, 10:41am (top)Message 24: mindylou182Ptolemy's Gate was definately my favorite of the three. Followed by Amulet of Samarkand and The Golem's Eye. Dec 2, 2008, 7:02pm (top)Message 25: catbastetI'm halfway through The Indigo King, which I find moves along much faster than the book before it in the series. Dec 2, 2008, 9:52pm (top)Message 26: Ms_BellaOk, I decided December is going to be a month of nothing but rereads, I am going to save my tbr pile for my 100+ book challenge in 2009.... Dec 2, 2008, 11:32pm (top)Message 27: KerianGood luck in 2009, bella! :) Dec 3, 2008, 6:41pm (top)Message 28: LadyNooh, Ms_Bella, that sounds like fun! Dec 3, 2008, 7:44pm (top)Message 29: compskibookI am two chapters into The Book of Lost Things and I really like it so far! Dec 3, 2008, 8:15pm (top)Message 30: lefty33Hooray, Compski! I'm glad you're reading it before the book loses itself, as it has a tendency to do. Dec 3, 2008, 9:23pm (top)Message 31: Ms_BellaOk.. so my decision of nothing but rereads is adding 1 new book lol.. I just recieved my early reviewers copy of Evermore By: Alyson Noel and I just have to read it, the back cover makes it sound wonderful!!!!! Dec 3, 2008, 9:29pm (top)Message 32: picolinaDec 3, 2008, 10:42pm (top)Message 33: cmbohnI really liked Dragon Flight. In some ways it was better than the first. I think I'll do Shamer's Signet next, another cool series. Dec 4, 2008, 2:50am (top)Message 34: Ms_BellaI finished reading Evermore and posted my (spoiler free) review. All in all I did like it very much. Now back to my December of rereads! Dec 4, 2008, 7:23am (top)Message 35: isirionthis december i (again) have a big paper for school, so all my reading will be related to that. bu-huu Dec 4, 2008, 8:20am (top)Message 36: foggidawnI finished Wicked Lovely and have started on The Hero of Ages. I liked Wicked Lovely despite the fact that urban fantasy is not usually my thing. I'll probably grab Ink Exchange later. Right now I'm just really excited to finally have Hero of Ages . . . but I'm having a hard time remembering details from the first two books. I really should have reread, but I don't have the time. Dec 4, 2008, 8:59am (top)Message 37: lefty33#33 cmbohn, I love the Shamer's series! I still haven't read the last one yet. Dec 5, 2008, 6:33am (top)Message 38: hollybeeeI am not on here too much, but I love this thread. I like seeing recommendations. I just picked up The Butt which is apparently not a touchstone, but is the new Will Self book. Compski- please post how you end up liking The Book of Lost Things because I am thinking of picking that up. Dec 5, 2008, 7:39am (top)Message 39: MrAndrewit's a very good book, hollybeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. *goes off to post on the rumour thread about what hollybeee is picking up* Dec 5, 2008, 8:28am (top)Message 40: lefty33Oh, Holly you should definitely read Lost Things! It's excellent! Dec 5, 2008, 8:42am (top)Message 41: biblioholic29I started my Oct. ER book, Broad Street last night. I would have finished it if I didn't have rehearsal, it's only 233 pages, I'll finish it tonight. Dec 5, 2008, 9:59pm (top)Message 42: cmbohnI started Shamer's Signet and then got distracted. Just not the right mood. I wanted some comfort reading, so I pulled out my old mysteries and read some Emma Lathen Banking on Murder. Holiday stress! It was so much easier when my children were younger. Message edited by its author, Dec 5, 2008, 10:02pm. Dec 5, 2008, 10:15pm (top)Message 43: biblioholic29I finished Broad Street (you can see my review here) so I'll be already to go when my next ER book comes. Until then I'm debating between People of the Book and The Poe Shadow, both of which have been on my shelves for about 6 months. Dec 6, 2008, 12:26am (top)Message 44: kirbyownsBrisingr- Really, I am getting farther along. I read it for almost the entire time I was waiting on my car being fixed (1 1/2 hours). Descendants of Darkness- Someone suggested this one to me, so I picked it up at B&N tonight. It's my first manga. Dec 6, 2008, 3:04am (top)Message 45: KerianI'm still reading The Tales of Beedle the Bard. I probably won't get a chance to finish it till Sunday. Dec 6, 2008, 8:08am (top)Message 46: MrAndrew>#43: People of the book. I need to know if i should get it/read it. BTW, Espy: I Am The Messenger was really really good. Marcus Zusak has an exceptional gift. Thanks for the recommendation. Dec 6, 2008, 8:15am (top)Message 47: compskibook46: Birthday Being, Zusak really is amazing. IAtM was so different from The Book Theif but both are among my favorite books ever. Great storytelling. Dec 6, 2008, 10:54am (top)Message 48: MarkJHCurrently reading The Shack by William P. Young. Too early to say what I think yet though. Dec 6, 2008, 11:13am (top)Message 49: grkmwkStill reading, and enjoying, Elizabeth Peters's Crocodile on the Sandbank. Next up will be The Tales of the Beedle Bard, then some seasonal books. And due to recent life changes/developments, I am also reading What to Expect When You're Expecting and What to Eat Before, During, and After Pregnancy. :o) Message edited by its author, Dec 6, 2008, 11:13am. Dec 6, 2008, 11:15am (top)Message 50: elleveeStill leisurely reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Collected Fictions Heat: An Amateur's Adventures... Dec 6, 2008, 11:31am (top)Message 51: biblioholic29#46: You're in luck that was my final decision. I'll probably spend my afternoon on it! Dec 6, 2008, 7:02pm (top)Message 52: LadyN#49 - Eek!!! Finished Queen od Subtleties today, and have just written a less than favourable review. I'm now trying to decide wether to read The Gathering before launching into more historical fiction with World Without End, which I've been putting off, while simultaneously champing at the bit to read... I'm currently in the mood where I want to read everything at the same time! Dec 6, 2008, 7:03pm (top)Message 53: LadyNThis message has been deleted by its author. Dec 6, 2008, 8:58pm (top)Message 54: Espeon200>#46 I'm glad you liked it. I'm really looking forward to his next book... of course that will be after he writes it. I hate his American Web site because it's so aenemic compared to some other current writers *cough, Brandon Sanderson cough*. It feels like they handed some poor intern who knew how to do flash a write-up about Zusak and about his books and said "make a Web site." No class at all. Speaking of current writers, I finished Cursor's Fury and need to get the next book in the series, but the library doesn't have it. Funny thing, I didn't realize until I was half way through the book that I hadn't read the second book in the series. I think the next thing I'm going to read is Hero of the Ages... once Foggi finishes it and hands it over *glare*. Dec 6, 2008, 11:24pm (top)Message 55: biblioholic29Finished People of the Book, I'll probably do The Poe Shadow next. MrA, yes you should procure a copy and read it, it was excellent. I'll write a review sometime in the next couple of days after I've had some time to process what I want to say. Dec 7, 2008, 5:01am (top)Message 56: MrAndrewGood to know. Dec 7, 2008, 11:11am (top)Message 57: biblioholic29Changed my mind and decided to stay somewhat in the same time-period/area of the world (at least one of them) and read The Blood of Flowers. Dec 7, 2008, 5:12pm (top)Message 58: biblioholic29OMG! I posted my review of Broad Street on my blog and I just got a comment about it from the author! I'm slightly horrified! Dec 7, 2008, 5:14pm (top)Message 59: lefty33KIK, Bib! But your review isn't negative, just not overly positive. Was the author friendly? Dec 7, 2008, 5:16pm (top)Message 60: foggidawnI'm trying to finish off The Hero of Ages today, but I don't think I will. I'm only about halfway through, and I have a lot of stuff I need to get done around the house. Next up I have Ink Exchange, and my October early reviewer book, Cracked Up To Be. Dec 7, 2008, 5:46pm (top)Message 61: LadyNbib! That's so exciting! Dec 7, 2008, 7:28pm (top)Message 62: biblioholic29#59/61: She was friendly. Said this was the first she had heard about there being an abundance of errors and since I was in the Philly area, did I know any good editors for the next publication. Craziness! Dec 7, 2008, 7:56pm (top)Message 63: jugglingpaynesbib! Now's your chance! Offer to be her editor! Dec 7, 2008, 10:00pm (top)Message 64: lefty33Awesome, bib! Go be the editor we all wish we could be! Dec 8, 2008, 2:15pm (top)Message 67: Kerian#58 bib: That's happened to me twice. It's very exciting, isn't it? I second #63 and #64! :) Will you let us know what you think of The Poe Shadow when you decide to read it? I've wondered about that one for a while. Dec 8, 2008, 2:39pm (top)Message 68: biblioholic29#66: Yeah, except in the review she read I said I live in the Philly area. :) #67: Of course I will! I'm getting a lovely 5-day weekend for Xmas, so if I haven't gotten to it by then, I should definitely get it done then! A couple people at work are also trying to get me to offer to edit for her. I don't actually think I'm qualified to be a "professional" editor, but I guess it can't hurt to offer, what's the worst that could happen? They tell me I'm not qualified, which I already know! Dec 8, 2008, 2:55pm (top)Message 69: KerianThanks, bib! That sounds so exciting! *happy dance for bib* Dec 8, 2008, 6:03pm (top)Message 70: cmbohnI finished Beedle the Bard and the Banking on Death compilation, plus Double, Double, Oil and Trouble. My daughter said that Shakespeare ought to sue over that last one. Dec 8, 2008, 7:46pm (top)Message 71: biblioholic29I'm two chapters in to The Blood of Flowers. It's a 370 page book and there are 7 chapters. Go ahead, do the math! Dec 8, 2008, 8:08pm (top)Message 72: LadyN71 - That's maths I can't do. I settled on reading The Gathering before starting on World without End. Sort of regretting it at the moment, but I'm sure I'll get something out of it, and then I'll be really pleased and ready to tuck in to the Follett. Right. Bed time. Dec 8, 2008, 8:14pm (top)Message 73: lefty33You're never going to bed, LadyN!! Dec 8, 2008, 8:16pm (top)Message 74: LadyNI am, I am!! (I'm actually in bed right now. I just need to turn off the lap top and go to sleep.). Ok, going now. Night night!! Dec 8, 2008, 10:09pm (top)Message 75: Ms_BellaI finally decided on reading Lightning by Dean Koontz I figured it has been a while since I read an adult fiction book. Dec 8, 2008, 10:29pm (top)Message 76: jugglingpaynesI just forced myself to finish Stargirl. All I can say is I am so glad I homeschool my kids, because this book just brought me back to everything I hated about school. Dec 9, 2008, 4:07am (top)Message 77: MrAndrew>#71: 52.8571428571429 pages per chapter. Exactly. How odd. I just finished a book and am pondering my next move. Dec 9, 2008, 9:05am (top)Message 78: biblioholic29#77: Precisely! It's making for a somewhat difficult read. There are plenty of breaks within chapters, but I don't really like to stop at those. Dec 9, 2008, 10:35am (top)Message 79: Mandy2Dec 9, 2008, 10:40am (top)Message 80: lefty33Bella, Lightning is the only Koontz book I've ever read. I liked it well enough, but I think I'm just not much of a Dean Koontz fan. (hmm, that's interesting... for you, Lightning touchstoned but not Koontz. Opposite for me!) Dec 9, 2008, 10:43am (top)Message 81: Mandy2Yes i just got it from the Library last night and started it this morning. My friend told me in like june that I should read it and when I saw a commercial that they made it into a movie i figured i'd better go get it. So far i'm a few pages in and am already sad that I had to leave it and go to work today...STUPID WORK!!! Dec 9, 2008, 10:49am (top)Message 82: lefty33Yes, work is stupid. Let's all give ourselves a day off. Maybe ... December 25th? Does that work for everyone? Dec 9, 2008, 10:59am (top)Message 83: biblioholic29Excellent idea lefty, but why go for just one day? I think I'm going to go for the days on either side of the 25th as well. Plenty of reading to do! Dec 9, 2008, 11:00am (top)Message 84: foggidawnLefty, that sounds great. In fact, I think I'm going to take the 24th, as well. Call me a rebel, but that's just how it's gonna be. Dec 9, 2008, 11:05am (top)Message 85: lefty33I'm actually taking the week before and after the 25th, so all you rule-benders are certainly welcome to join me on their extra days! I'm sure Kirby will at least. ;) Dec 9, 2008, 11:41am (top)Message 86: Mandy2all of you are so lucky. I'll be taking just the 25th off. :( Dec 9, 2008, 12:45pm (top)Message 87: Renald128As of Friday I will be on a strike and will not go to work until January 7th of next year to protest that Mandy doesn't have more holidays (ok we have vacations at work and don't judge me I only get vacations once a year) Dec 9, 2008, 12:48pm (top)Message 88: KerianI'm probably going to be the same as Mandy with just the 25th off. Since today's a day off, I'm going to finish The Tales of Beedle and the Bard. I think I'm going to set Rebel Angels aside since I can't seem to read it and pick up something else to read. Dec 9, 2008, 1:03pm (top)Message 89: Mandy287: I'm going to ignore the part in parenthesis and say well Thank you very much! Dec 9, 2008, 1:48pm (top)Message 90: sugeHmmm there's nothing wrong with a little civil disobedience. I'm reading Specials I've really enjoyed this series. Which goes to show that every once in a while, I am wrong. I thought this series was going to be totally bogus and lame. I'm also still trying to finish Brisingr Dec 9, 2008, 2:14pm (top)Message 91: foggidawnI'm flitting from book to book. I started Ink Exchange but am not in the mood. Then I picked up Suite Scarlett which looks light and fun. However, Nation by Terry Pratchett is on its way to me, and I've heard rave reviews from colleagues, so I may have to read it when I get it. I'm betting I'll finish Suite Scarlett tonight, though, unless it starts to drag. Dec 9, 2008, 2:17pm (top)Message 92: KerianMy sister's boyfriend needs to be on this site. Foggi, he swore to me that Nation is excellent. (He's a major Pratchett fan.) Dec 9, 2008, 2:55pm (top)Message 93: kirbyownsI'm starting the 3rd book of the Descendants of Darkness cycle. I think one of our B&N has the next 2 books, but after that I'm sunk. I'm surprised that I'm actually interested in them. I'm also going to finish Brisingr (I can do it!) someday. I want to finish my super secret Christmas present before I get back into reading that. I'm hoping to finish it tonight. Dec 9, 2008, 6:34pm (top)Message 94: Renald128#89: Oh come on Mandy remember that the intention is what REALLY counts lol Dec 9, 2008, 9:54pm (top)Message 95: biblioholic29Finished chapter 4 so I'm over 200 pages in! Dec 10, 2008, 3:29pm (top)Message 96: lefty33We took our weekly class trip to the library this morning. The kids' room had been closed for several weeks to put in new furniture and new carpet, and it opened on Saturday. Today was the first time I got to see the new stuff. It looks so great! And they have all new shelving too, which is beautiful, and they rearranged the room so that you can find your way through it better and the sections are arranged in a much more logical way. I can't wait to go back! I took out several guides for buying a house while I was there, since the next step in house hunting seems to be "figure out what to do next." ;) Dec 10, 2008, 3:33pm (top)Message 97: 06nwingertI had a random urge to reread the Da Vinci Code. I don't know where it came from. Must've been a subliminal message from somewhere. Anyhow, I have it on cd, so I'm listening to it while I study for finals. Dec 10, 2008, 3:40pm (top)Message 98: biblioholic29#97: I'm having a hard time imagining the audio Da Vinci Code. Maybe that's because I have the illustrated version and I think the most fun part of reading that book is scrutinizing the art the reference. Okay, so glutton for punishment that I am, I left a comment on my blog to see if the author goes back to read it. I couldn't find any other way to contact her. We'll see. Dec 11, 2008, 6:47am (top)Message 105: lefty33That phobia book is an interesting idea! There are bound to be big spiders and snakes popping up everywhere. Not a good book for you, K -- you were right not to buy it. ;) Dec 11, 2008, 8:48am (top)Message 106: kirbyownsSo I bought The Tales of Beedle the Bard, but not for me. I bought it for a friends birthday. I was afraid she had already bought it, but she had not. I am impressed that I have lasted this long without buying myself a copy. I feel like addict, wanting to buy a copy but knowing I have to wait. Dec 11, 2008, 8:53am (top)Message 107: ellevee*does happy dance* Finished The Crimson Petal and the White, so have added The Argumentative Indian to my 'currently reading' pile for a bit of nonfiction (I'm trying to read more of it). I should have read the cover and saw that Publishers weekly warned about reading this book when you don't have the time to read it through. I can't believe this book has been sitting on the very bakc of my shelf for years. Dec 11, 2008, 10:33am (top)Message 110: LadyN#108 - AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! The book might look interesting the tittle arresting...but until I don't hear one of my lt friends rave about it i AM INCAPABLE OF PURCHASING A BOOK!!! WHAT HAVE YOU PEOPLE DONE TO ME!! I'm trying to break away from that habit to give books a chance, but it is hard. So what I get is more books than I can read at any given time. Lefty if you are like me, you may have more jewels sitting on your back shelf, just waiting to be read. lol Dec 11, 2008, 12:15pm (top)Message 114: LadyNI will I will, but I must not buy it until after I have finished The Gathering and World Without End. It may have been a different version... but it was really cool. I remember they had a dentist, a skyscraper (for heights), a spider, a clown... I don't remember what else. The skyscraper one was really cool because it actually looked like you were far up. Dec 11, 2008, 6:05pm (top)Message 120: KerianI didn't think of there possibly being a dentist in it. That's a good one! Now I'm really curious about what the skyscraper page looks like. *Must-not-get-phobia-book!* Ekk. Can't spell. Message edited by its author, Dec 11, 2008, 6:06pm. I finished Ink Exchange, which I did not like as much as Wicked Lovely. I also read Cracked Up To Be, my Early Reviewer book. I wasn't madly impressed with either, and both were a bit gritty and depressing. I'm ready for a fun read, now, and nothing I have lined up really seems to qualify. Dec 12, 2008, 10:17pm (top)Message 140: lefty33A_R, have you read the first two in the Heir series? I liked the first two much better than the third. I just started The Sea of Monsters tonight. That takes control to not give into! ;) Dec 12, 2008, 11:23pm (top)Message 143: MrsGrinchIm going to read Inkdeath when I get it. I already read The Tales of Beedle the Bard. And I have to read the last Great and Terrible Beauty. Dec 13, 2008, 9:21am (top)Message 144: biblioholic29I started my 50 book challenge in April, but I wanted to try to finish it by the end of this year instead of going all the way to April. I'm up to 33 books (because I haven't been counting rereads within the year or I'd be up to 41). So now I'm reading America because I think I can finish that this weekend, then I'll do The Poe Shadow which I'm hoping I can finish by Tuesday. I'm really glad I'm getting 5 days off for Christmas, that should help a lot! Dec 13, 2008, 9:57am (top)Message 145: 06nwingertI read (and finished) The Tales of Beedle the Bard last night. I started on a reread of Les Miserables. Due to the length of my tbr list, when I visit the library on Monday, I'm going to get (and read) lots of books, including: The Book Thief more France travel guides books on mythology books on the origins of Christmas vampire-esque books (e.g., Blood and Chocolate) Coraline City of Ember Charlie Bone and the Shadow Alice in Wonderland and many, many more. Dec 13, 2008, 8:18pm (top)Message 146: lefty33Bib, a late thank you for the Blood of Flowers recommendation. I have put it on my TBR list! (er -- I put it on the higher-priority list, since if it goes on the main list it might get lost!) Dec 14, 2008, 7:32pm (top)Message 147: KerianI'm still reading Alice's Adventures in Wonderland! I just didn't like the illustrations. (I got weird looks on the bus.) I'm reading that one at home and another, Dewey, to and from work. I need kleenex! I'm only around page 45 so I think I might need a couple boxes of it at the very least. Edited for touchstones not working. Message edited by its author, Dec 14, 2008, 7:33pm. Dec 14, 2008, 7:43pm (top)Message 148: lefty33K, did you get "permission" to read Dewey or did you just steal it? I finished Sea of Monsters and can't wait to read Titan's Curse! I also started The Eyre Affair today. Interesting so far! Dec 14, 2008, 7:48pm (top)Message 149: Ms_BellaI am reading Scarpetta and so far it is really very good. Dec 14, 2008, 9:05pm (top)Message 150: compskibookI just finished The Book of Lost Things today and I really liked it. Very dark and at times disturbing, but I got through it! Great story. Now I just have to get it to the library before I lose it. I usually read The Best Christmas Pageant Ever each year, but I was in the middle of something last year and missed it. I am going to read it next so that doesn't happen this year. Dec 14, 2008, 9:56pm (top)Message 151: Kerian#148 lefty: I'm not sure if it was either. I asked to borrow it, though, and she knew I'd go through her books if she didn't get it out for me. ;) I'm eager to read The Titan's Curse as well. I hope you enjoy it! Also, I absolutely love The Eyre Affair. It's one of my favorites so I likewise hope you will be fond of it, too. :) #149 Bella: My sister who reads the series will be reading that one not long after Christmas, I believe. ;) #150 compski: Good luck getting it there! I think they should reduce the late fee fines for that book. Either that, or raise them to help bring in more funding. ;) Dec 14, 2008, 10:06pm (top)Message 152: mindylou182Well... I read Midnight Sun. I couldn't resist. But now I'm sad that it's over since it's not complete. Oh well. It was nice to get a different viewpoint than Bella's in the Twilight series. My friend is letting me borrow her copy of Forever in Blue but I haven't started it yet. Dec 14, 2008, 10:06pm (top)Message 153: lefty33#150 Compski, I'm glad you liked it! I love that book! Come to think of it, I haven't seen my copy in a while... I think a friend is borrowing it. K is onto something regarding the late fines for that book.. #151 K, I'm glad you are reading Dewey, anyway. It was a good pet story. :) I heard of Fforde's book from all of you liking it, so I'm sure I will like it too. The first couple pages I was kind of confused, but I understand the world now, so I am liking it! I can't wait to understand Hades ... or is this a continuing series and I'll have to read additional books for the whole story? Dec 14, 2008, 10:28pm (top)Message 154: KerianThanks! I agree. I love Dewey already. The Eyre Affair is part of a series titled after Thursday. There have been five books so far. Book six won't be released until at least next summer. However, each story has it's own adventure and is complete on it's own. I have a tough time picking a favorite in the series. Like for you, the beginning had confused me some. I may have reread the first chapter during my first reading of that book. I used to reread them once a year along with the Harry Potter books. Dec 15, 2008, 9:11am (top)Message 155: pollysmithI finished Brisingr and picked up Small Gods again. Don't know what I'll read next Dec 15, 2008, 9:31am (top)Message 156: sugeCat A room with a view is one of my favorites! Have fun! (wow you guys are going to Italy. Dec 16, 2008, 7:14pm (top)Message 163: grkmwkAm currently tearing through Silent in the Grave by Deanna Raybourn. It's the first in a new mystery series featuring Lady Julia Grey, set in the late 1880s London. Dec 16, 2008, 7:37pm (top)Message 164: foggidawnSince the last time I posted, I've read Fingersmith (which was all right) and Graceling (which was really good). Dec 18, 2008, 10:34am (top)Message 184: Renald128I think they are both entertaining Mandy, and to me the best one out of the two of them was the kite runner, maybe because I read that one in English and A Thousand Splendid Suns in Spanish but I liked them both, I hope you enjoy them and tell us what you think about it. P.S. I cried a little bit with that book so have the tissues close by just in case... Dec 18, 2008, 10:39am (top)Message 185: Mandy2Thanks for the heads up. I'll be sure to have tissues near by. Dec 18, 2008, 12:40pm (top)Message 188: suge#187--> uncanny! I just had that book in my hand yesterday! wowza! I'm still reading Gone, which is a really great sci-fi type book. I'm also reading Shadow Kiss I'm absolutely obsessed with the Vampire Academy series! I've also hit 1001 in my library!! I haven't catalogued the stuff I bought yesterday (birthday gift card!!). It was a great haul! I'm also reading my 96th book this year, and I'm feeling good because I might just make it to 100, or more!!! Dec 18, 2008, 2:52pm (top)Message 189: kirbyownsI also recieved a Scholatic order, so my school LT account just increased by about 20 books. Dec 18, 2008, 6:11pm (top)Message 190: biblioholic29I decided to go with The Last Cato. Apparently this is another author who doesn't know about chapters. 7 Chapters, 452 pages! Dec 19, 2008, 9:10am (top)Message 191: Mandy2I don't know how that's possible. I like chapters. Marley and Me was good about chapters...289 pages 29 chapters. Dec 19, 2008, 7:48pm (top)Message 192: biblioholic29I'm now waiting for my dinner to be ready before I start on chapter 5, I really don't like to stop between chapters if it can be at all helped. Dec 19, 2008, 9:09pm (top)Message 193: Ms_BellaI finished Scarpetta and decided to start This Lullaby I needed some light reading. Dec 20, 2008, 9:07am (top)Message 194: biblioholic29I finished The Last Cato at a little after 2 in the morning. Since I still have 14 books to read to hit my goal of 50 books in 9 months, I'm going to spend the weekend (except of course party time and rehearsal) in Narnia. I figure that's seven books that are all very short and fast reads but aren't picture books. (I'm trying really hard to not stoop to reading Duck for President or Dream Snow and then counting it, but I will if I have to! Dec 20, 2008, 12:10pm (top)Message 195: jugglingpaynesHey! I happened to love Duck for President! As well as Click Clack Moo and Dooby Dooby Moo. I also recommend Sandra Boynton's books with CD, especially Dog Train. I'm almost finished with Battle for the Labyrinth. You people are too distracting. :oP Dec 20, 2008, 3:33pm (top)Message 196: biblioholic29I'm not knocking Duck for President, it's one of my favorite books and it's in my library, but it would feel like cheating to resort to reading books like that to finish my challenge by the end of the year! Dec 20, 2008, 3:39pm (top)Message 197: kirbyownsEah. You do what you gotta do. ;) I'm in the middle of reading The Tale of Despereaux with my class. We just finished book the second yesterday. When we come back we will start book the third (that will be Jan. 5th). I've told my kids that if anyone sees the movie, they have to keep what happens a secret. At home I'm reading Descendants of Darkness 7, The Paradise War, and Brisingr. I will finish Brisingr by the end of the year!!! I will! I've been very distracted by trying to make a certain unnamed present for a certain unnamed HE'r, and taking care of a puppy. Dec 20, 2008, 4:27pm (top)Message 198: lefty33Oh I just love Despereaux! Today I'm heading into the library, so here's my list of potential books to get/ read during the holiday (plus during our exciting trip to Nice over New Year): A Lion Among Men, Graceling, Alice in Wonderland, and Notre Dame de Paris. P.S. I'm also racking up Border's gift card, so I can buy Petit Robert, an upper-level French dictionary for school. Just checked out Graceling, Alice in Wonderland, and Notre dame de Paris. Now I've started reading a book called The Risky Way Home, which isn't my typical read (it's contemporary fiction), but the author is a homeschooling friend and she sent me her book for my birthday. I also read The Dot and the Line by Norton Juster to my children. If I read 19 more picture books before January, can I say I read 50 books this year? :o) Dec 22, 2008, 1:12pm (top)Message 207: Kerian#195 JP: My kid sister loved Click Clack Moo! :) RE Despereaux: I once ordered it with my sister's school for her as a Christmas present. All the other students got their books except my sister. I never saw a refund, either. #200 Bella: That was one of my favorite series by VC. She died so early on in the publication of her books, but this one she lived for. It was her very first book. #201 polly: I only wanted to read new books, but I'm going with a comfort book myself. :) #206 jp: Only if you spend a full minute on each page you read. :P I'm still reading Alice's Adventures in Wonderland because I had lost it among gift wrap. I hope to finish it in the next couple of days. (It's kind of busy.) The next book I plan to read may be my first reread of Deathly Hallows, in which case I'll look for the threads to post about the chapters. Dec 22, 2008, 1:42pm (top)Message 208: jugglingpaynesDid you accidentally wrap it K? :o) Dec 22, 2008, 3:39pm (top)Message 209: biblioholic29My Early Reviewer came!!!! Dec 22, 2008, 4:38pm (top)Message 210: lefty33K, the next couple of days are busy or Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is kind of busy? ;) Dec 22, 2008, 6:42pm (top)Message 211: Ms_Bella#204 Renald, No, I haven't read it yet... I received it a couple of months ago and it has been begging me to read it ever since (yes, yes, rumor, the books talk to me lol) Thanks for the heads up on the tissues! I usually don't read sad books but the last book I have read made me cry so I have a box right next to my reading chair! Dec 23, 2008, 2:20pm (top)Message 218: foggidawnHmmm, I started rereading Mansfield Park earlier this year. I ought to try and finish it before the end of the year. *sigh* So many books, so little time. Dec 23, 2008, 2:39pm (top)Message 219: KerianI mean to read that one before the year would be over. It's too busy to now. Dec 23, 2008, 8:23pm (top)Message 220: Ms_BellaOk, I switched from Flowers in the Attic to Zen and the Art of Vampires... but I don't know if I should read it because I am not sure if it is a sequel to anything... Dec 23, 2008, 8:42pm (top)Message 223: Renald128And maybe it's a sign that you should read Flowers in the attic.... sorry I induced some of my friends to read that series and it's a habit that is hard to quit...but seriously read it....;) Dec 23, 2008, 8:44pm (top)Message 224: lefty33I just finished The Eyre Affair! It was wonderful! I love Hades -- especially that he and his brother are named Acheron and Styx Hades. How great! Especially since I've been brushing up on my Greek mythology since reading the Percy Jackson books. Tonight I started Coraline. I am loving it so far, 30 pages in. I might just read the whole thing tonight. We'll see. Somebody also has to wrap presents, so... #120-122 Bella, I hate when that happens! Dec 23, 2008, 10:12pm (top)Message 225: biblioholic29I finished my ER, I'll write the review...probably after Xmas, but it was enjoyable. Currently reading The Manning Sisters by Debbie Macomber My first book in December was Skipping Christmas by John Grisham After that I read an older book my son found in his packed boxes. I remembered reading this book when he was small The book of Christmas - The Enchanted World from TimeLife Books. Towards Zero by Agatha Christie was the third book of the month. Friend's husband loaned me 23 Days of Terror by Angie Cannon Then there was, what I have choosen, to be the best book of 2008, And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. Dec 25, 2008, 1:23am (top)Message 231: lefty33I knew you'd enjoy it, Mindy! :D I finished Coraline this afternoon, which I loved. Though I think I would be a bit freaked out if I had read it as an 8-year-old. I started The Shamer's War, which is the 4th book in the Shamer's Chronicles and am enjoying that so far too. Dec 25, 2008, 8:37am (top)Message 232: Espeon200Well, I was planning on reading Alcatraz and the Scrivener's Bones today, but I have three new video games and a collector's edition copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard to grab my attention, so I may be putting off my reading a bit longer. Dec 25, 2008, 8:43am (top)Message 233: foggidawnI'm currently reading I Put A Spell On You, a kids' book about hi-jinks at a spelling bee. I just finished Trouble by Gary Schmidt, which was all right, but not as good as The Wednesday Wars. I also got The Tales of Beedle the Bard for Christmas (I got the standard edition, so Espy and I can compare editions), so I imagine I'll be reading that soon. Dec 26, 2008, 11:13am (top)Message 234: Espeon200I finished The Tales of Beedle the Bard yesterday. It was a fun read, but it really made me wish that the Harry Potter series wasn't over :'(. I really will have to read the next Alcatraz Versus The Scrivener's Bones book now. Dec 26, 2008, 11:39am (top)Message 235: sugeOoooh, Espy what vid games did you get??? I'm reading Graceling which was my Lt Secret Santa gift. I love it so far. Dec 26, 2008, 12:13pm (top)Message 236: biblioholic29My intentions for the end of the year have completely changed and I no longer care about my challenge, I'll just count my rereads and be fine. I'm about halfway through Harry, a History and I love it. I'm doing a series reread when I'm done. I recommend that you all read this book. In large part its about the internet and its effects on HP fandom and the friendships and bonds that HP and the internet have helped to create. I find myself thinking of you all constantly. The descriptions of meeting the people you've been obsessively discussing the series with in person and the way it's so easy....well, I know how Melissa feels. Buy it, read it! I love you guys! Dec 26, 2008, 2:37pm (top)Message 237: foggidawn*adds Harry, A History to wishlist* Dec 26, 2008, 2:40pm (top)Message 238: Espeon200#235 - I posted them all in the "Share Your Pile of Presents" thread. Dec 26, 2008, 6:22pm (top)Message 239: lefty33Bib, when you wrote "I know how Melissa feels" I was so confused -- I thought your status as Elfster Supreme Being had given you insight into others' feelings or something. Then I realized the author was also a Melissa. #237 Me too. I finished The Shamer's War, which I really liked, though the very last paragraph lowed my overall enjoyment of the series. I read Nicholas in Trouble -- such a fun series! And I'm nearly done with The Titan's Curse, also great. Christmas break is the best!! Dec 26, 2008, 6:33pm (top)Message 240: catbastet235- Ooh, I loved Graceling suge! Also, and I don't know if it's her writing or just my insanity, but I actually cried when reading about her reading about the parts of the books that made me cry when I read them. What did you do - put the wrong dust jacket on it? ;) #251 jp: And about half a million ghosts. Have you ever been there when you have visited CA? The air is so cold it almost makes me feel like there is another presence unseen to us. #252 kirby: Ah-ha! So that's the case. ;) I'm reading.... :( When am I reading? This is the busiest week of the year. My work is swamped. I am happily imagining what I will read when I'm not reading, though, and still getting through Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Dec 27, 2008, 11:31am (top)Message 258: Ms_BellaI don't think I am going to be reading much more this month because I have decided to de-clutter my apartment so I am going to focus on that so it is done for the New Year. Then Starting in January I am going to read Vampire Academy. Dec 27, 2008, 1:44pm (top)Message 259: Espeon200#256 — Try not to get too excited. City of Ember was fabulous, and I'd recommend it to anyone, but The People of Sparks just didn't do it for me. It just felt too political for my tastes, and not the good kind of political like The King of Attolia or Dune. I finished The Great Divorce, which was just as fantastic as I remembered, though I'm sure I still haven't gotten everything out of it that I can. Next on the list, officially, is Alcatraz Versus the Scrivener's Bones, but I'm sure I'll find something else to read beside it. Dec 27, 2008, 3:37pm (top)Message 260: tiegster#214: I just finished Monkey High! vol. 1 and 2. Pretty good shojo. Dec 27, 2008, 3:55pm (top)Message 261: lefty33I agree with Espy about the Ember series. I LOVED the first one, second one was more like "eh" and the third was completely the author standing on a soap box proclaiming personal beliefs. I heard there was a fourth (?) and if that's true, I'm not sure I'll read it at all. Dec 27, 2008, 5:00pm (top)Message 262: Renald128#259 and 261: Espy and Lefty thanks for the heads up, I won't expect much from the next parts of the Ember series, but everytime that I start a series of books I feel the need to finish it entirely even if I didn't like one of them (i.e. Eragon and Eldest and I've heard so many people struggle with Brisingr I'm scared to go near it) and I might as well finish them all. Dec 27, 2008, 6:42pm (top)Message 263: tiegsterJust read The Importance of Being Earnest on google books...what a lover-ly way to spend my Saturday...I've read three books so far. And there's still time left in the day. Dec 28, 2008, 11:35am (top)Message 264: grkmwkFinished The Lace Reader well over a week ago and still don't know how I feel about it. I'd like to reread it to see if knowing the ending affects my interpretation of the story, but I don't have much desire to pick it up again so soon. Plus, it's from the library and there's a long waiting list so I should probably get it back. Currently reading Dewey: The Small-Town Cat Who Touched the World for book club, then it'll be The Cellist of Sarajevo, which is due back at the library soon. I'm still in the midst of Rebel Angels. I'm not sure when I'll be able to pick it up. I've been very busy. Is there anyone here who has read it? I thought I had the whole thing figured out by the 20th page or so, but the end surprised me. I reread The Last Apprentice: Revenge of the Witch. I really love that series. There are several books more in it now that I need to catch up with (and what do I do? Reread the first ones instead). Now I'm rereading the second one too -- The Last Apprentice: Curse of the Bane. They are really great books. I've also read Tales of Beedle the Bard. I got it for Christmas. It was good, but I would have liked more fairy tales and less commentary. I have always loved all the original fairy tales, so to have "new" fables was great! There just weren't enough of them. :( Last Apprentice touchstones don't want to work. Did I say that already? ;) They have a bit of HP flavor in the morals (for example, we all have the capacity for good and evil; it's the choices we make that define us; prophecies suggest a future that is still open to what we make of it), but they are much darker than HP in a way that make them great fun to read after dark (despite or perhaps because of the warning!). They are the type of scary that make you like to be a little scared while knowing you're safe on your couch and could close the book, but why would you want to? Okay, now everyone go read them and then I won't have to preach about them anymore. ;) #277 Yes, Mitzy! See post #273. Lots of us here have read it. There is also an official Beedle the Bard thread. I didn't see anything scary about the page after that, either. ;) (Surley I must have missed something having skipped all the previous pages and books up until that point.
