You are the only one so far I've seen doing PG Wodehouse. I love his books! For the 888 challenge I had a few of his on my Books that Made Me Laugh Out Loud list. I can't wait to see what you read!

Dec 30, 2008, 3:15pm (top)Message 3: OldDani

I adore Wodehouse cmbohn. I have some of his books that I haven't red for years and I thought the challenge would be a great opportunity to track more down : )

He is definitely a Laugh Out Loud writer.

Great idea to choose books from the library's recent returns shelf!

Jan 1, 2009, 2:50pm (top)Message 5: RidgewayGirl

I'm interested to see what you read with your five-year-old. We do chapter books with our two (one five, the other eight) with me reading a chapter of one after the picture books and then my husband reading a chapter of a harder book sitting in the hall while they lay in bed.

Big winners with both were A Tale of Despereaux, the Series of Unfortunate Events and anything by Beverly Cleary.

Amysnortts I've discovered some absolute gold there over the years.
RidgewayGirl were currently on Peter Pan which is a little over his head. Just finished a heap of Enid Blytons.

A PG Wodehouse category is a fantastic idea!

I also love the idea of reading books from the recent returns shelf. I don't think my library has one though, too bad...

I have had such good luck with Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day ... especially the semolina recipe for sandwich rolls, pita, naan and more. What have you tried and liked?

Mar 8, 2009, 6:52pm (top)Message 11: OldDani

Tracyfox I adore this book. I used to bake all our bread traditionally and I can't believe how much time this saves me and the results are just as good. So far I've made the master recipe, the European peasant bread, the oatmeal one, the Vermont cheddar, deli style rye and the light whole wheat.I've liked them all. I think the European peasant bread is my favourite so far.

That oatmeal bread really looks great. I've got the ingredients for it on my shopping list. Did you use a hot oat bran cereal for the oat bran (like Bob's Redmill) or something else?

I will have to give the peasant bread a try too.

I read an enjoyed Mendel in the Kitchen about genetically modified food. I also enjoyed Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human which is about evolution and food. Both books gave me a lot to think about.

Thanks! I'll track those two down, they sound interesting : )

The 09/09/09 deadline date is only as an added challenge. The 999 challenge extends to the end of the year.

Last night on my local PBS station they showed The Botany of Desire about the tulip, marijuana, apples, and potatoes -- at least half of it could count for your food category. It was fascinating viewing.

And did you know that Jeff Hertzberg & Zoe Francois have a new bread book out? It's called Healthy Bread in Five Minutes a Day. Just met the authors today -- they stopped to sign copies of their book on their way to a signing at another bookstore. They said their next book will cover pizzas and flatbreads of the world, and sauces to dip them in.
