Hi! I'd like to know which unfinished book series you're in the middle of reading; and are looking forward to the next installment of the story.

For me, it's Abarat by Clive Barker. It's supposed to be released Summer 2009 _at the earliest_.

What stories are you waiting for to be continued/finished?

=)

Jan 1, 2009, 12:54pm (top)Message 2: Musereader

Lets see,
Next book in the Gentlemen Bastards sequence by Scott Lynch Republic of Thieves July? August?
Patrick Rothfuss' follow up to The Name of the Wind, Wise man's Fear April
Sarah Micklem's Wildfire, sequel to Firethorn that I read in 2004 is definatley released this year, june, maybe.
Next Witcher book by Andrzej Sapkowski to be translated is Times of anger, September.
Final/12th book from Robert Jordan (RIP)
Sharing Knife by Bujold, Passage, January
Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Mercy, June
Karen Miller's Hammer of God, January
Anne Bishops Black Jewels Tangled Webs, and Shadow Queen March
Celia Freidman's Magister Trilogy Wings of Wrath, June
Hero of Ages Sanderson, April

Yes some of the above are avalible in USA and/or hardback, but i'm waiting for them in the UK and/or Paperback.

Jan 1, 2009, 1:00pm (top)Message 3: littlegeek

Shall I be the first to mention GRRM? *sigh*

Also, the sequel to The Name of the Wind is preordered.

If TV counts, I'm way past ready to know who the final cylon is.

As for series that are already published, I have lots: Tawny Man by Robin Hobb, Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan, Pallisers by Anthony Trollope, still working on the Wicked series, and I've got 2 more Patrick O'Brian books.

There's probably more I'm forgetting.

Jan 1, 2009, 1:02pm (top)Message 4: WholeHouseLibrary

I'm anxiously awaiting for word of the release date of the 3rd (of 4) book(s) of The Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen R. Donaldson. I just checked his website - there's no mention of it, not even a title.

Jan 1, 2009, 1:07pm (top)Message 5: Musereader

#4 WHL - Fantasticfiction.com has a title of Against all Things Ending and a date of October 2010 for that book.

Jan 1, 2009, 1:39pm (top)Message 6: DeusExLibris

I've been waiting with baited breath for Turncoat the next book in the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher to come out ever since I heard about it late last year.

Jan 1, 2009, 4:08pm (top)Message 7: WholeHouseLibrary

Thanks very much, Musereader!

Jan 2, 2009, 2:04am (top)Message 8: ulan25

#2 Musereader: I'm waiting for Scott Lynch's book, too! I hope it really does get released this year. =)

Jan 2, 2009, 2:59am (top)Message 9: MrsLee

The sequel to The Name of the Wind, Mistborn series, #1 Ladies Detective series, Laurie King, if it's a Holmes and Russell novel, I'm dying to read the last book in the Harry Potter series, I know it's published, it's just not at our library.

Jan 2, 2009, 4:32am (top)Message 10: Seanie

I'm waiting for the conclusion to Robert Jordan's WoT series, I was given the first 7 books in 1998 or 99, read them all then, then read them all again í got the 8th & again when the 9th & 10th came out so I'm pretty attatched to the characters :) When the final book comes out (hopefully later this year, but Brandon Sanderson's got a big job ahead of him getting it written for Robert Jordan so I wouldn't be surprised if its delayed) I will read the prequel for the first time, then the series for (mostlly) the fifth time before reading the conclusion...

Because its been such a long wait with WoT, I've mostly avoided starting any series that havn't been finished yet. I've held off on George R Martin's ASoIaF but am eagerly awaiting the final book so I can buy & read them all :)

I've got the first 2 books of J.V. Jones's Sword of Shadows trilogy on my shelf unread too, havn't found the 3rd in standard format yet, but will add the series to my TBR list when I get it...

I'm waiting for Allison Croggon's The Singing to come out in the same format as the first 3 of that series on my shelf so I can buy & read it - I got tricked into reading that one, lol, I thought it was a trilogy & didnt realise til late in third book that there was still more coming...

WHL

I was just about to start Fatal Revenant myself. If it's going to be almost two years before book three comes out, I'm wondering if I should even bother. :(

Jan 2, 2009, 7:29am (top)Message 12: Jenson_AKA_DL

I'm waiting to hear info on another Nightrunner book by Lynn Flewelling.

I'm also looking forward to Rachel Caine's new Weather Warden and Morganville Vampires books despite the fact that her cliffies bug the heck out of me.

For manga I'm most anxious for the last volume of Her Majesty's Dog which had an original release date back in November.

Jan 2, 2009, 7:31am (top)Message 13: scaifea

Speaking of book series, does anyone else hate it when this happens?:
I got a page-a-day calendar that gives a different book recommendation for each day (yeah yeah I know, just what I need). Now, already, on the second day, the recommendation is for a book that is 13th (!) in a series. Ack! That's not just *one* recommendation - it means I have to add *13* books (at the least - there may be more in the series) to the list! This bothers me.

Re: #2 MuseReader-

Hero of Ages was AMAZING. You are right that it's out here in the US in hardback, and it was killer good. It's nice to meet other Brandon Sanderson fans. Did you participate in the Elantris group read with Brandon we did a year ago here in the GD?

I am also BREATHLESSLY waiting on Patrick Rothfuss's sequel to The Name of the Wind. I was sad when he delayed it last year.

Other than those two, I'm not really embroiled in any series right now. I was reading Scott Lynch's Gentlemen Bastards books, but he really lost me with Red Seas Under Red Skies. The tone of it was so different than the first book. The Lies of Locke Lamora was like a swashbuckling Ocean's 11 with magic thrown in. The second book in the series was so angsty, I'm afraid it lost me.

Jan 2, 2009, 9:52am (top)Message 15: bibliophool

Like others here, I'm currently waiting for new releases by Jim Butcher, George R. R. Martin, the last book in the WOT series, The Wise Man's Fear and The Republic of Thieves.

But I'm really looking forward to the next Steven Erikson book, Dust of Dreams.

Jan 2, 2009, 10:12am (top)Message 16: Busifer

Like so many others I'm waiting for the 2nd installment of the Kingkiller Chronicles.

Also I'm eagerly waiting for #10 in the Foreigner series - Conspirator. I wonder when she'll run out of -or words, but until now they've all been good reads, so ;-)

Jan 2, 2009, 11:45am (top)Message 17: Kaysee

I am waiting on George R. R. Martin. The book was supposed to be released this year - but then they decided to wait until fall of 2009. Boo!

Jan 2, 2009, 4:39pm (top)Message 18: Severn

OOohweeee do I have a list, like Muse. In fact, there are only 3 on Muse's list that aren't on mine (Jordan, Sanderson, Friedman - although I've had my eye on the latter). Glad to hear the Micklem is coming out, Muse - I loved Firethorn, even though the treatment of women was disturbing. And I have been waiting and waiting for Kushiel's Mercy...

My other big ones, not including the ones on Muse's convenient list:
Steven Erikson's Malazan novels. I refuse to read anymore until that series is done.

Brian Ruckley's follow up to Bloodheir - brilliant book.

Jim Butcher's Codex Alera - which I have been recently reading, isn't the greatest but only two to go, and want to know what happens.

George R R Martin of course. Could be waiting awhile.

The fourth book in Sarah Zettel's Camelot series, which was canceled by her publisher I think - the tards.

Doomed Series:

Melanie Rawn fnished a book called Mageborn Traitor in 1997. It's number 2 of a trilogy. Sigh. Really loved the first two. Guess she's given up.

Isobelle Carmody published Darksong in 2002, which is again second in a trilogy. Since then she's been focusing on other projects.

Ricardo Pinto's third book in his Stone Dance of the Chameleon series is nowhere in sight. Mind you, the second book was verging on dire, while the first was superb. I was hoping for a balance between the two in the third...if it's ever published.

There's more...but for most of those number one in the series is sitting on my shelf, still in the queue.

Jan 2, 2009, 4:43pm (top)Message 19: mindylou182

For me its the Inkeart series. My sister is letting me borrow her copy of Inkdeath though... so I'm getting close to finishing it.

Jan 2, 2009, 6:26pm (top)Message 20: Shanra

I'll be another who's waiting for Martin's ASoIaF. (Am I the only one who has that in their heads as ASoFaI?)

I'm also looking forward to The Angel's Cut which, while not necessarily a series, is a sequel(ish). And there's C.S. Friedman's Magister series of which the second book is set to be released early this year.

I'm looking forward to continuing in With the Light, though I'm only on volume 2 so far and that's already out. I think that's it in terms of my series, but I could be wrong. These are just the ones I can think of and the ones I want to finish. I'm going to start reading several series this year too.

Jan 2, 2009, 6:43pm (top)Message 21: Musereader

#7, thats ok WHL, I have a round up of my favorite authors on that site every 6 months or so to make sure I don't miss releases or announcements.

#12, Jenson, no Nightrunner book announced as of yet, (I'm a fan too), but she did only release one last year.

#14, dressage don't think I did post in the Elantris discussion, though I did read it, it was a bit before I started to post here, Not actually read the other two just yet because if its a finite series (trillogy, quad ect as apposed to an open series like discworld) I like to try to have them all on hand before I read them, (occasionally I fail), But i'm fairly sure i'll like them based on what i know about them.

Read seas under red skies wasn't quite as good, but I want to give him a chance to get back to par.

#18 Wildfire has been pushed back soo many times, but I think it really is going to be published this year, it actually has a price on Amazon unlike the previous times it was announced for *holding thumbs*

I'm a fan of Carmody too, she just bought out the continuation of the Farseekers after an 8 year gap, so I wouldn't say that one is quite doomed yet. Though I don't have Darkfall yet as it's expensive to get carmody books here, being shipped from Australia and all that.

But hey if we are pitching open series here may as well throw in Discworld, I'm always looking forward to a new discworld, He's announced he's working on Unseen Academicals ATM, and has mentioned Raising Taxes as a possible future title. I hope he does a good few more before he can't anymore. Auel needs to hurry up with that 6th Earths Children book, and I'd like Terry Brooks to do another Landover, but I really doubt it.

Doomed Series

Hey, you never know... an author I loved 10+ years ago has just started writing again, and is finally going to finish a series whose most recent book came out in 1998!

#12 Jenson_AKA_DL & #21 Musereader - oooh tricked again! I thought Nightrunner was just a trilogy too, Traitor's Moon seemed pretty conclusive to me...

*goes to check fantasticfiction.co.au*

OK, seems she's started a newish story ark, I'm guessing another 2 books to come, I have 2 reactions to this:
1 - Yay more Nightrunner books - I loved those!
2 - Oh no, more to be added to my wishlist which hasnt even been written yet...

#14 dressagegrrrl - Oh that's annother one on my "To be bought & read once series is completed" list, cant remember who on here said it but something along the lines of "Patrick Rofthus is like Crack" had me giggling so much I had to look him up & add him to my list :)

#14 dressagegrrrl & #21 Musereader - Oh & Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn etc.. is on that list too (or should be, hmmz, better make sure that list is updated)...

Jan 3, 2009, 8:57am (top)Message 25: Morphidae

Anyone else still have any hope of another Jean Auel+?

Jan 3, 2009, 10:35am (top)Message 26: GeorgiaDawn

I read the first 3 Auel books and stopped. Maybe that's a series I should pick back up.

I also keep thinking I'll read the entire Outlander series, but I have only read the first and part of the second book.

Jan 3, 2009, 12:12pm (top)Message 27: AnjilaG

I've got all the Jean Auel series, so far. It's been read repeatedly, especially the first book.

I think she's working on another one, but it'll probably take as long to come out as the last one.
She definately does massive amounts of research.

Jan 3, 2009, 1:59pm (top)Message 28: MerryMary

Auel writes at the speed of glaciers.

I'm another waiting on the Kingkiller and Nightrunner books. In addition, I await new Laws of Magic, Larklight and Ranger's Apprentice books, even though they each released a book recently. I always keep my eye out for new Sookie Stackhouse books and Deverry books.

They're the main ones at least.

Jan 12, 2009, 11:18am (top)Message 31: viciouslittlething

Melanie Rawn Mageborn: Exiles series and sad but true L.J.Smith Nightworld Series. That series started so many years ago, I can't remember what it was all about tho!

Jan 12, 2009, 11:26am (top)Message 32: reading_fox

#29 - Dark Tower is finished. Seven books that's it. No more. It's a rubbish ending, but he won't be adding to it.

There's a Specific group Upcoming Books to bemoan the delays in your latest favourite.

I too am about to start fatal revenant and wait for the rest. Donaldson is a very slow writer.

Cherryh. I'm waiting for Regenisis, (published but not yet available as paperback in the UK), Deciever and Conspiritor (one writen but not yet published the other close to being finished)

Plus U-Z of the Alphabet mystries

Whatever Brin is doing these days, and Alistair Reynolds and many many more..

Jan 12, 2009, 11:38pm (top)Message 33: Seanie

& a certain group read on here has conned (tehehe)me into getting the first book of Danny Birt's Laurian Pentology...

Jan 13, 2009, 8:44pm (top)Message 34: rare_bird

I'm also waiting for Scott Lynch to hand in his manuscript!! After being let down by the Harry Potter movie being pushed from November to this summer, I was hoping "The Republic of Thieves" could tide me over... but noooooo... this I must also wait for until the summer. Poop.

I just purchased Fatal Revenant the other day. I'll probably put off reading it until Against All Things Ending comes out in 2010. The final book, by the way, is slated to be called "The Last Dark" (though book #3 underwent a name change before publication -- it was originally going to be "Shall Pass Utterly".)

On the subject of Donaldson, his The Man Who... mystery series is still open-ended, and hopefully there'll be at least one more book coming.

Also another Malazan fan here, eagerly awaiting the publication of Dust of Dreams, as well as the MMPB release of Esslemont's Return of the Crimson Guard so I can import that.

Besides that, I just finished The Warded Man, whose two sequels have yet to be published.

Oh, and I can't forget Matthew Stover's Acts of Caine! The first two stand on their own, but book #3 (Caine Black Knife) ends on a cliffhanger...

Other than that, I generally try to steer clear of series-in-progress; I've actually got the first three books of A Song of Ice and Fire sitting on my shelf, but I refuse to start into them until I've got my hands on at least the first 5 books.

Jan 16, 2009, 12:36pm (top)Message 36: TheOneTree

I have so many 'unfinished' series, I'm almost too frightened to look - and don't even wish to think about it to be straight. Lets face it, over half of the above are series that I either wish to own, or wish to complete.
I too would love to see another Terry Brooks book from his Landover series, because it was so delightful. Book twelve to complete the Robert Jordan series is eagerly anticipated, as I avidly read this collection from whoa to go, and loved every book, although it's going to be a tuffy not being written by the original author.
Patrick Rothfuss Name of the Wind the next one in this series, best not forget Danny Birt.
Raymond Feist continuim. And then there's Melanie Rawn, Isobell Carmody and Kirsten Britain new novels!
Anne Bishops Black Jewels also.

Gad, I didn't even know about Stephen R. Donaldson The Last Chronicals of Thomas Covenant being available. I mistook this for being a reprint of his earlier work!

Sometimes, coming in to the Green Dragon is almost as dangerous as walking into a book store!

So many books, so little time/money.

I've just finished reading Victory of Eagles by Naomi Novik and realise I have no idea when the next book in the Temeraire series will be written.......oh impatient me !!

I don't know much about how many books Jasper Fforde intends to write in his Thursday Next series, but I'll probably read them all.

I got some of this in an email...

"Beginning: Second Book of the Laurian Pentology" by Danny Birt, was supposed to be officially released on February 1st, but Amazon released the book earlier than that, because they've already made it available!

... I forwarded the email to White Dwarf (book store) and they have placed it on order and confirmed same.

I'm soooo excited, I can't wait for it to get here.

Sorry, had to share, had to share... rofl.

Like Many I am waiting to finish the George Martin and WoT books.

#21 and #36 I think there is supposed to be a Landover Book coming out next August called Princess of Landover.

I would say I am waiting for the Shanara series to be over, but he has sequels scheduled out until 2014.

Jan 26, 2009, 5:56pm (top)Message 43: DanoStone

I'm just about finished with Homeland : Book 1 of the Dark Elf Trilogy which is also Book 1 of The Legend of Drizzt series. I received The Hunter's Blades Trilogy (which is like books 14-16 in the Legend of Drizzt) so I thought I'd better start with book one. Book one has been excellent. I'm really looking forward to the rest of them.

Jan 27, 2009, 6:08am (top)Message 44: Musereader

#42 Melsar OMG, the last Landover was 14 years ago, I seriously wasn't serious about wanting a new one, I just wished there was because I enjoyed it and it's an open series, so he could, but I didn't think he would, but wow! no way! that's going on my wish list like right now. OMG!

Jan 27, 2009, 10:57am (top)Message 45: Melsar

#44 Here is my source so it seems pretty legit. Sounds like it has already been written and is at the publisher.

Terry Brooks What's Next

Jan 27, 2009, 3:43pm (top)Message 46: Musereader

Oh, yeah, I know, I googled it the instant I read your post, and got the official Terry Brooks site, with all the announcements in 2008 about finishing and editing it, not to mention pre-ordered it on amazon already.
