No prognostications about how many books I'll get to this year as I'm trying to get back into my old film viewing habits. I'll be keeping track of both.

May 28, 2009, 3:39am (top)Message 47: zanix

I appreciated the more intellectual approach to standard genre scenarios but I can't say that I was overwhelmed. I wouldn't be opposed to giving one of his other books a try.

May 28, 2009, 4:12am (top)Message 48: zenomax

Impressive reading list so far this year. Quality wise as well as quantity.

Which titles of those read would you most recommend?

May 29, 2009, 12:09pm (top)Message 49: Dyrfinna

Thanks! I assume you meant me. :-)

You've probably done all the classics already, so I'll skip those. I liked Black Flies, Serena, Lark and Termite, Little Bee, Tinkers, The Crow Road, Waveland, Disquiet, How the Dead Dream, and All the Living. Probably my favorite has been The Flying Troutmans.

Did you like Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close? I read Everything is Illuminated but it didn't really float my boat.

May 29, 2009, 7:12pm (top)Message 50: zanix

@zenomax - Thanks. I'll try to keep it down to 15:

Darkness at Noon, The Guns of August, Invisible Man, Justine, Les Liaisons dangereuses, Narcissus and Goldmund, Portrait of a Lady, The Power and the Glory, Remembrance of Things Past, A Sorrow Beyond Dreams, Three Exemplary Novels , Travels with Charley in Search of America, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Waiting for the Barbarians, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

@ Dyrfinna - Hey! try not to steal my compliments :P

I thought 'Everything is Illuminated' was amusing (really enjoyed the movie) but 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close' was just a poorly conceived, sentimental horse-pucky festival. If I could punch the book hard enough that the author could feel it, I would.

Thanks for your 15 recommendations.

Koestler has been on my mind for a long long time (decades rather than single years!), and Murakami more recently.

Of the others I have only read Durrell & Proust but would always put them near the top of any list too. So I think we are on roughly the same wavelength here....

Jun 4, 2009, 7:14pm (top)Message 55: zanix

For an Orwell fan I'd say 'Darkness at Noon' is a must -- I don't see how we'd have a '1984' without it. Murakami can be a bit hit or miss but 'Wind-Up' is simply transcendent.

Did you like the Larsson? The sequel should be out any time now.

I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' (more for the characters than the entertainingly wonky plot) and definitely plan to pick up the sequel.

Hi Z, what were the Emma Goldman essays like? Do they still hold up in the 21st century?

Oct 19, 2009, 7:19pm (top)Message 99: zanix

I think the essays fit in perfectly with the poorly reasoned political diatribe that still circulates today (but what else is new?) Light on ideas, heavy on propaganda and sentimentality.
