I'm traveling on and off to Indonesia and would love to learn more about the country to get more out of my busy visits. Any suggestions?

Nathaniel's Nutmeg describes the 17th century Dutch - English spice wars in Indonesia. Not much of a travel book - but interesting.

Simple ... seek out books by Pramoedya Ananta Toer, Indonesia's version of Naguib Mahfouz.
