I like your urban homesteading category. I'm going to look for this book next time I'm at the library.

I highly recommend the first book in that category, and I've been doing recipes from the 3rd (the book on breadbaking) from the book's website. It's so great I'm going to read the book as well.

There's a group starting Dante's Inferno Feb. 25. Maybe that's one to consider for your classics category?

Thanks for the idea! It's one I've already read, but I'll be interested to read everyone's comments!

Dead and Gone comes out 5-5-09, can't wait for that. I love the Dresden files. Going to try Butcher's fantasy series next. I need some help on my classics/award winning category. Any recommendations? I'll do Dante's Inferno is you will. Are you game?

Oh, you've already read it. Nevermind!

Leah,
I added Dead and Gone to my list. Maybe when it comes out we can read that one together. I think we also have the latest Hollows book, Bone Crossed, and Kitty books on our lists as well - that will be fun!

More fun than the Inferno, which I doubt I will read again in this lifetime. I'm having a hard time coming up with Classics too because I've already read most of the ones I'm interested in reading. I refuse to read Wuthering Heights no matter how many good things I read about it.

I loved the Three Musketeers and think you will too. Actually, I've never read a book by Dumas I didn't like. Have you read the Handmaid's Tale?

Good things? I read Wuthering Heights and it sucked. Period. I am at a loss to explain what is so fabulous about that novel. I couldn't stand any of the characters in that story! I did enjoy Jane Eyre though by Charlotte B. I haven't read the Handmaid's Tale but I will add it to the list on your recommendation. I loved the Count of Monte Cristo so I am really looking forward to the Three Musketeers.

I think you'll like the Handmaid's Tale. I'm glad to hear you hated Wuthering Heights, as now I feel even more justified in never ever reading it!

Finished the 1st Dresden files - fun, and a good break from the fountainhead.

Finished the Fountainhead. Am counting it twice (a second time in the Anything Goes category) because it was such a BEAST.

Got some reading done on a business trip and have finished a lot of my in-progress books. I still have an Early Reviewer book I have to wrap up, and then I can read some of the fun stuff my library finally sent me!

Mar 16, 2009, 1:22 pm

Finally finished my last due-out Early Reviewer book (Getting Naked Again) and knocked out another Lemony Snicket book.

Just discovered the China Bayles mysteries and really enjoyed the first one I read.

And of course - new Pratchett, always a joy!

I can't believe it, but I seem to be on schedule so far with the challenge!. I lucked out and got a Kitty book as an Early Reviewer, so that one will be coming up soon. And I'm still loving my local library, who got me the latest Kim Harrison book (which I am reading ATM) pretty darn quick.

Stephanie Plum is done and now it's back to Dresden. I've also received two Early Reviewer books I need to finish in between all the library deadlines.

Thanks, I hadn't expected to be pretty much up to date with all that's going on for me, but seems like I read pretty much no matter what.

I just finished the third novel I've read using DailyLit, the email service that sends you an entire novel in bite-sized chanks. I can't say I liked Madame Bovary, but I like the service. Also, I started reading Jacob's room using it but HATE the book too much to continue. I'm going to try Barchester Towers by Anthony Trollope instead. I've edited my list accordingly.

Apr 18, 2009, 12:27 pm

I hated Wuthering Heights too. But I loved Barchester Towers. What did you think of Johnny and the Bomb? I really liked that one.

21hjjugovic
Apr 23, 2009, 10:28 am

I just love Terry Pratchett, and his Johnny series is really underappreciated. My favorite is Only You Can Save Mankind, but Johnny and the bomb was great too.

I'm doing Barchester Towers through Daily Lit, so it will take me a while to finish it. I'm having a hard time keeping track of who is who, but I'm enjoying the tone. The author has some great one-liners in there.

looks like I am barely on schedule. But just barely.

23hjjugovic
Jun 18, 2009, 5:28 pm

Am officiall on schedule, with 40/81 done before June is finished. Since my sweetie is away for a few days, I know I'll finish the breadbaking book and Beguilement this weekend. It's also time to start a new DailyLit, which I'm really liking. I've finished almost all of my "classics" this way, and am going to replace another off my current list with something available on the service.

It's amazing how much reading I'm getting done with my sweetie away. DailyLit continues to rock.

25cmbohn
Jun 23, 2009, 6:06 pm

What is the site for DailyLit? Does it cost anything? I have a couple of books on my historical fiction book that I can't get at the library, so I was planning on substituting another book. But if I can read them online, I will keep them on my list.

26hjjugovic
Jun 26, 2009, 1:05 pm

Daily Lit is www.dailylit.com, and it's free for most of their books. They specialize in classics, which, since they are beyond copywrite, they can reproduce in emails. They have some modern fiction for reasonable fees, but their catalgue is not huge. But if you want to read Shakespeare or Austin or Poe, it's a great resource.

So I tried cleaning up my touchstones, basically by removing those that are broken. I'm not going to go through and put links in for those that link to the wrong thing. I really wish touchstones worked better.

Maybe there's an easy way to fix mine?

Does anyone know where the site FAQ or help is?

28cmbohn
Jun 30, 2009, 11:47 am

I have the same problem. Some I never could get to work, but sometimes it helps if the touchstone is bringing up the wrong book all the time to add the authors name like this March - Geraldine Brooks.

29hjjugovic
Jun 30, 2009, 12:21 pm

Well crap. I was using your trick and it was working for more than half my un-Touchstoned items, and then they suddenly all disappeared, except the most recent ones I'd added. Can there only be so many in one post, or something?

30hjjugovic
Jul 13, 2009, 12:28 pm

I can't believe I might actually finish this list. My boyfriend has asked that I read a book he recently read, so that'll be another TBD under anything goes filled in. and I'm finally poised to make a dent in historical fiction.

Sorry the touchstones aren't working. I'm bummed and can't figure why they broke.

31cmbohn
Jul 22, 2009, 2:57 pm

Honestly, touchstones are just weird. It's very frustrating.

One more to go, in my categories, though I'm already over 81 books total. Fun!
