In my last post here I mentioned I'd more books on hold at the bookstore. Bought those, except for one that LT helped me realize I already owned. Hoping to s-l-o-w down on books purchases now.

Bought two nonfiction:
* Casualty Figures: How Five Men Survived the First World War by Michele Barrett
* Seven Daughters of Eve by Bryan Sykes (about DNA & history)

And four genre fiction:
* Scandal by Carolyn Jewel (chancy, this, because although I've seen fairly good reviews, I swear her previous book{s} were panned)
* The Runaway McBride by Elizabeth Thornton (pen name for Mary George, which is how the touchstone comes up; one of my favorites)
* So Enchanting by Connie Brockway (really like some of her older stuff, especially As You Desire).
* Wicked Intentions by Lydia Joyce

Happy reading.

Shoes.

;-)

2> Rather you than me. I'm not sure which I hate more: shoe shopping or purse shopping.

Acquired five free books in the last 48 hours; first one was a gift from a fellow classics book group member, others are romance ARCs:

* Sherman's March by Cynthia Bass - Civil War historical fiction
* _What Would Jane Austen Do?_ by Laurie Brown (5/09)
* _Too Hot to Handle_ by Robin Kaye (5/09)
* _SEALed with a Promise_ by Mary Margret Daughtridge (4/09)
* _Lady Anne and the Howl in the Dark_ by Donna Lea Simpson (4/09)

By the way: I read Seven Daughters of Eve already and LOVED it. I'm just sayin'.

Bought two books today that I've coveted for some time. Had I not bought them, they would've been returned from the store to the publisher & I would've had to order them. (Yes, I am rationalizing.)

* Journal of Dora Damage by Belinda Starling (historical fiction)
* The Horse, the Wheel, and Language by David Anthony (history and historical linguistics)

Went to Borders ALONE (yes!) and wandered for over a hour. It was very lovely! I had a stack of books I wanted to get but eventually forced myself to narrow it down to two; one manga Black Sun Silver Moon volume 5 and Fugitive Lovers by Jennifer Dunne.

Feb 10, 2009, 4:50pm (top)Message 7: saraslibrary

#2: Ha, love it! ;) Which reminds me, I need some new ones, too . . . .

#6: I love Borders, but they're so pricey! I usually go book shopping alone, because I will literally spend hours in a store (if it's big enough). :)

I don't think I've bought a whole lotta books these past couple of months; I've just been swapping them with new stuff we have donated at work. New stuff (mostly genre fiction):

  • All I Want for Christmas Is a Vampire by Kerrelyn Sparks (for my Paranormal 999 Challenge)

  • M or F? by Lisa Papademetriou

  • An Ice Cold Grave by Charlaine Harris

  • Female Ejaculation and the G-Spot by Deborah Sundahl (As if the title alone doesn't elicit some nervous laughter, I found this one stuck between two religious books. Someone trying to tell me something? ;)

  • Lucky by Alice Sebold (I've already read it and love it.)

  • Teacher's Pet by Domini Taylor

  • Princess Bianca and the Vandals by Nick Licata

  • Only Pleasure by Lora Leigh

  • A Girl, a Guy, and a Ghost by Sherrie Rose (another for my Paranormal 999 Challenge)

  • Bard's Blood #2: A Midsummer Night's Scream by David Bergantino

  • Simple Principles to Eat Smart and Lose Weight by Alex A. Lluch, et al. (in the process of reading this one)

  • Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison (Paranormal 999 Challenge)

  • Night's Master by Amanda Ashley (ditto)

  • Two for the Dough by Janet Evanovich

  • Devil in the Details: Scenes from an Obsessive Girlhood by Jennifer Traig

  • My Hot Dog Went Out, Can I Have Another? by Bill Amend (Read and love!)

That's great that you can swap books at work! I work in a fairly small office and only one other person here has any interest in reading. Right now she has my copy of Wuthering Heights.

I didn't pay the full price for either book at Borders. The manga I used my 30% off coupon for and the romance was on clearance for 50% off. I'm always on the look out for a sale :-)

    Feb 11, 2009, 9:53pm (top)Message 9: saraslibrary

Yeah, I consider myself pretty lucky working where I do. That's too bad there's only one other person who likes to read in your office. But hey, I guess it's better than nobody, right? I don't think I ever read Wuthering Heights, though I think I've seen almost every movie of it. And smart shopping, btw. I love sales! :)

    Feb 17, 2009, 9:24pm (top)Message 10: ReneeMarie

8-9> Did you know there's a teen novel called Wuthering High? I've always been more of an Anne fan than a Charlotte or Emily fan, but I do want to read the teen novel that riffs on Emily's novel at some point. Lockwood also wrote other Bard Academy series titles, all of which play on and with classic literature.

    Made another purchase today:

    * Tempted All Night by Liz Carlyle
    (historical romance; autobuy author)

    * Passing Strange by Martha A. Sandweiss
(historical nonfiction about Clarence King, who lived a double life as a white explorer of the 19th century U.S. West, and as a black Pullman porter and steelworker named James Todd -- just arrived at the bookstore today and I had to have it)

    Feb 17, 2009, 10:07pm (top)Message 11: saraslibrary

#10: Wuthering High sounds like fun. I love when authors do spin-offs of classics. Thanks for pointing out that series. I'd definitely love to read it. And Moby Clique?? Omg! XD

    Feb 21, 2009, 4:02am (top)Message 12: trinah

Today I bought The Hours by Michael Cunningham for $5 at Dymocks, in their bargain basement. Good find, as I wanted to read this sometime soon.

    Feb 23, 2009, 6:20am (top)Message 13: ReneeMarie

Two more on the pile. Still on a genetics kick.

    * The Sea Captain's Wife: A True Story of Love, Race, and War in the Nineteenth Century by Martha Hodes

    * The Agile Gene: How Nature Turns on Nurture by Matt Ridley

Yay: nothing on hold at the bookstore anymore!

    Feb 23, 2009, 12:23pm (top)Message 14: saraslibrary

#12: How bad is this? I knew The Hours was a movie, but had no idea it was a book. (sheepish smile) Hope you enjoy it, trinah.

#13: Yay for no more holds. :) I'm sure the bookstore's bummed though.

    Me:

  • Revenge Gifts by Cindy Cruciger (currently reading and getting a kick out of it)

  • Animal Liberation by Peter Singer

  • Blow Me Down by Katie MacAlister

  • The Cabinet of Curiosities by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child (my boss liked it, so this one should be interesting)

  • Courting Midnight by Emma Holly (I'm not really into historical romances but I love Ms Holly's erotica, so we'll see . . . .)

  • Probably some more, but I've misplaced them. :)

    Feb 23, 2009, 9:25pm (top)Message 15: ReneeMarie

14>Yay for no more holds. :) I'm sure the bookstore's bummed though.

Made the mistake of going to work today. 3 more items on hold now. Happily, no hardcovers.

Courting Midnight by Emma Holly (I'm not really into historical romances but I love Ms Holly's erotica, so we'll see . . . .)

Isn't Courting Midnight paranormal? I'm not much into paranormal or romantica, but did enjoy Beyond Innocence and *really liked* Beyond Seduction. Apparently the two are also available in one volume as Beyond Desire.

    Feb 24, 2009, 2:43am (top)Message 16: saraslibrary

I thought Courting Midnight was paranormal, too, by the description on the back cover (vampires and all that); but the spine says it's historical romance. (shrugs) I'm going with paranormal. Are Beyond Innocence and Beyond Seduction part of the series or just other books by Emma Holly?

    >10 I had both Wuthering Heights and Wuthering High on my 999 Challenge lists LOL! Haven't gotten to Wuthering High yet, but it does look cute.

Today I picked up my special order manga Satisfaction Guaranteed Volume 6 from the bookstore. I've almost finished the complete manga series I've been collecting and will now be reduced to waiting for new volumes of current series to come out.

    Feb 24, 2009, 9:29pm (top)Message 19: ReneeMarie

16> I think the "Beyond" books by Holly tie together, but aren't part of any other series. (Hence the omnibus.) I wish she would write more historical romance.

18> I'll have to take a look and see what else is lurking over at 999. I've started trying to read the 75 threads, too, but man those people can talk.

    Feb 25, 2009, 11:47am (top)Message 20: saraslibrary

Thanks for clearing that up, Renee.

I've started trying to read the 75 threads, too, but man those people can talk.

Didn't mean to butt in, but I know what you mean. :D By the time I'm done reading one message, someone's posted again. It's hard to keep up sometimes.

I'm fairly new to LT and have just found this group today. Perhaps a good way to purge my guilt!.

I went out to some second hand bookshops looking for Virago Modern Classics and came back with two:
    The Gentlewoman by Laura Talbot
    and
The Life and Death of Harriett Frean by May Sinclair.

    I also bought:

Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner (I've seen this recommended quite a few times)

Lettice Delmer by Susan Miles (a Persephone Book which I also have a weakness for)

    and

The Blood of Flowers by Anita Amirrezvani (recommended on BBC Radio 4's A Good Read)

lol . . . I never thought about it like that, but I guess this thread is kind of like confession time. :)

Technically, I didn't buy this one (it was a gift), but I now have Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer and am currently reading it.
