I'll nudge A Fine Balance. It's the only one I've read of the list. But I also liked the book quite a bit.

I haven't read any of these but both A Fine Balance and The Street of Crocodiles are on my list of books to read this year.

I will also nudge A Fine Balance. I just read it this year and thought it was amazing. That said, I have not read any of the others on your list ... but you will not be disappointined in A Fine Balance.

I'll nudge Palladian - I love Elizabeth Taylor. But can I also add a half-nudge for The Street of Crocodiles since I would really like to read it? I saw a theatre production based on it by the brilliant Theatre de Complicite, many years ago.

Let me nudge King Leopold's Ghost by Adam Hochschild because it is on my TBR pile and it looks interesting.

I too will nudge A Fine Balance, only because it is the only one I've read, and because it is indeed well done. I have a caveat though--it is possibly the most depressing book I've ever read. It's an excellent book that I hated.

If John Gardner of The Wreckage of Agathon is the same dude who wrote Grendel and that seminal book on writing (can't remember the title), I will strongly denudge that one. He's the kind of writer who distracts me into thinking about how much I loath him. Extremely pompous and full of himself.

A Fine Balance is the only one I've read, and I'd definitely nudge that one, although not if you need the sort of read that doesn't engage all your emotions...

A tentative nudge for Boy A too, but only 'cos it's on my own TBR and I'm keen to hear what you might think of it.

Okay, well I'll give a positive nudge, then, for Boy A. It's rare indeed for me to read a book after I've already seen the film but the Channel 4 production of this story so moved me that I was tempted for once and I'm very glad I was. It's a beautifully written book, fairly short and decidedly accessible without ever being simplistic. Honest, compassionate and one of my favourites of last year.

I just finished King Leopold's Ghost. It's a wonderful book of a terrible time. I'll nudge that, while admitting I haven't read any of the others. Judge Sewall's Apology is on my TBR list. I'll bet that's a good book.

>10 I'm late. I'd nudge the Djebar, but I haven't read that one yet:-) Soon!!! However, i'm with baobab, King Leopold's Ghost is a pretty potent tale...

The only one on this list I've read is The Street of Crocodiles so I'll nudge that -- it's weird, but it's beautifully written, oddly appealing weirdness.

I'd also nudge A Fine Balance but be prepared to have your heart mangled as Rohinton Mistry makes you fall in love with his characters then assigns them the most dreadful depridations. The Street of Crocodiles is my second nudge - strange, atmospheric and full of stonking descriptions of the weather and the town.
