It is the Ancient Greek history class of Donald Kagan on both video as well as the transcript.

And it is free.

RE the following: The style and substance of both lectures are absolutely excellent. The very best in my experience. And I certainly found it better than his one volume bk on the Peloponessian War. (I haven't cked out his multivolume work.)

The academically initiated among us will know the Bryn Mawr Classical Review. Not surprisingly, it is a journal of reviews of books pertaining to Classical Studies. New issues and the archived ones back to 1990 are available electronically to anyone by free subscription:

Are bibliographies still worth publishing in the age of searchable databases, searchable documents, online resources etc? Why/why not?

11LamSon
May 19, 2009, 4:12pm

>10 Yes, I think it is still worth putting out bibliographies. It saves having to
reinvent the wheel over and over, provided they are kept up to date. It is also nice to have them annotated.

The Vietnam one I listed is massive and it doesn't have everything. I would not want to do all that on my own. Prof. Moise at Clemson U does a good job of keeping it up to date.

I have tried to find bibliographies or reading lists in other areas of interest and they are scarce.

My wife the research librarian told me about this major tool. It is complicated to access but if you get it you are getting one very major tool.

Roughly speaking it is the databases available through the New York Public Library. As you read on you can can those databases are global in reach.

Now then, how do you get access? Answer: not easily but here are some suggestions:

1-IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY CARDS

The Library is currently in the process of combining LEO and CATNYP, our two online catalogs, into a single search interface. This new catalog will expand considerably on the many services already provided in LEO in CATNYP and make NYPL’s collections more accessible than ever before. Our new Catalog is expected to launch on Monday, July 6th 2009. More information on the new catalog will be made available on nypl.org in the weeks ahead.

As part of this process, as of May 4th 2009, ACCESS cards will no longer be issued. Current ACCESS cardholders will not be affected.

New applicants interested in using the non-circulating collections of The Research Libraries who apply on-site will instead be issued a Branch Library card. This card will afford them the same level of access to Research collections as the current ACCESS card as described below.

Borrowers who apply for (or currently possess) a library card in The Research Libraries, but wish to also use the circulating collections in The Branch Libraries must take their card to their local Branch Library and request that it be activated in that system. Please bring the identification requested below when you do so.

Borrowers who apply for (or currently possess) a library card in The Branch Libraries, but wish to access Research Library materials, must take their card to a Research Library location and request that it be entered into that system. Note that some restrictions may apply.

Duplicate records of borrowers found in either system will be merged so that all activity on their record, including items checked out and outstanding fines, will be combined into one record. In these cases, only the most recently issued Library card will remain in the system.

Applicants for New York Public Library cards after July 6th will not be required to cross-register for use of Library collections.

***

An NYPL library card allows you to do more than simply borrow books and other materials. You can also use your card to access our online databases from home. There are two different library cards used at The New York Public Library: a Branch Libraries Card is needed to borrow circulating items, use online databases from home and renew or reserve books. An ACCESS card is used to request materials in any of the readings rooms of the Research Libraries.

Of course the last one in the list is:

WorldCat

If the book you want is available by interlibrary loan via your local library,

worldcat.org

will tell your library where they can get it.

So you can really get any book you want.

Also in the list is:

What Do I Read Next?

Which is a helpful reader advisory for you if you have a book you really like and want to move on to the next one similar to it or choose from similar choices.

enjoy,

Ur

Wow, I spent most of a day looking through those two sites. Once I found the National Archives Flicker account it was all over.

Love the American Memory site. You can page through images of the pages of rare books, or use very reliable text transcriptions.

Speaking of rare books, Google Books http://books.google.com has done a public service together with the academic libraries at Harvard, U. of Mich., U. of Calif., etc., etc. I've been amazed at what's available for free downloads as PDFs or EPUBs (whatever that is). When you use the feedback link to call attention to an illegible or missing page, Google staff has been diligent (from what I've seen) in redoing the scans to get it right. It has allowed me to peruse 18th- and 19th-century journals and magazines as well as half-forgotten traveler's books, geographies, and advice books for emigrants to the United States.

The only downside is that naive users may well hit upon something like Monette's History of the discovery and settlement of the Mississippi Valley and swallow it all, without question, because of its lofty prose and relative antiquity. The Internet is already a haven for the absurd misapplication of random data about the past.

I agree about the downside. Because of computer systems and applications most of us (in my very unscientific observation of colleagues, coworkers, and students) have conflated knowledge with skill. Plus most non-historians still think of History in a very late nineteenth century "positivist" terms. Thus they think all you need is to find the information and write it up in order to be a Historian.

The skill of interpreting and analyzing information is then ignored. Information that cries out for both interpretation and analysis is absorbed whole rather than evaluated, compared, weighed, and tested.
