Welcome to the Group Movie Watch (IV) thread! If you are new to our group (or to the group movie watch), welcome! We watch movies every Saturday night at 9:30 LibraryThing time (Eastern USA time). Anyone is welcome to join us -- just grab a copy of the week's movie selection and join us in the chat room. We will all start watching together, and comment along as we watch.

This thread is for the upcoming movie watch schedule, any survey that might be running about the movie watch, recent movie watch history, and discussion about the group movie watch. Keep an eye on this first post for (mostly) up-to-date information about the group movie watch!

Schedule of upcoming movies:

1 August -- The Princess Bride, hosted by foggidawn

Since everyone is hesitant to host in August, we will do free-for-all nights on August Saturdays -- if you are free on Saturday night, drop in to chat, and whoever shows up can choose a movie to watch.

We'll go back to our usual schedule of member-hosted movies in September, so if you're interested in hosting on September 5, 12, 19, or 26, sign up below!

I'm just letting everyone know that I'm still able to run my movie this weekend, hope to see yoy guys there!

Jun 3, 2009, 1:12pm (top)Message 4: littlegeek

You know, I really miss these. I've been so busy lately I haven't had time to attend. Maybe after summer is over....

Nice to see you around again, Alyss!

Jun 3, 2009, 2:18pm (top)Message 5: kirbyowns

Me too lg. I haven't been around lately on Saturdays, or had access to the chat room. I'd like to host but I don't know when I'll be gone to Washington yet.

Jun 3, 2009, 2:50pm (top)Message 6: foggidawn

Something has come up in regards to my movie night on June 13th -- a college friend sprang party plans on me a few days ago, and I said "Great!" . . . completely forgetting that I was supposed to host the movie that night. Would it be okay with everyone if we moved that movie watch to the evening of June 14th?

Jun 3, 2009, 2:52pm (top)Message 7: littlegeek

If you did, I could do it. (June 13th is roller derby night.)

Jun 3, 2009, 2:53pm (top)Message 8: littlegeek

btw, foggi, which version of Phantom of the Opera were you thinking? There's been several.

eta: Realizes that you young'uns probably have no interest in the Lon Chaney, Sr. silent version CLASSIC nor the half-way decent Claude Rains versons, but instead must subject me to the horrors of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Even Gerard Butler can't save that for me.

Still, it does make it seem more horrible to me. ;-)

Jun 3, 2009, 3:01pm (top)Message 9: foggidawn

#8 -- Yes, alas, the most recent version (with Gerard Butler) was the one I had in mind, if only because it's going to be the easiest for everyone to get their hands on. I'll have to track down the others you've mentioned some time, though!

Jun 3, 2009, 5:38pm (top)Message 10: compskibook

1: Foggi, I can host Master and Commander on July 11 or 18. Maybe the 4 and 24 can be Harry Potter movies.

5: kirby, When you do know your schedule we should reschedule Kate and Leopold.

8 + 9: LG and FD, Once I rented the Weber Phantom and by mistake they sent some horror version. It took me about 10 minutes to figure out it was the wrong one. I remember the credits looked cheesy and then some guy was attacked and lost his legs!

ETA: 6: Foggi, June 14 works for me!

Jun 3, 2009, 6:26pm (top)Message 11: lefty33

June 14th would mean I should be able to be there for it, Foggi, so it's fine with me!

Jun 3, 2009, 7:21pm (top)Message 12: littlegeek

compski, I love Master & Commander! I'm such a giant Patrick O'Brien fan and the movie was pretty good at getting the flavour of the novels. (Although they left out Stephen's spying.)

Jun 6, 2009, 11:40pm (top)Message 13: QueenAlyss

wat happened?

Jun 6, 2009, 11:41pm (top)Message 14: foggidawn

Whoa! I was in chat, and then . . . I wasn't. I think it's doing the same thing it did last week -- I'll check with JPB and see if it's a problem.

Jun 9, 2009, 5:54pm (top)Message 15: Hogwarts_Express

Okay, Phantom of the Opera is officially moved to Sunday, June 14th -- see you then!

~foggi

Jun 9, 2009, 7:08pm (top)Message 16: kirbyowns

Oh! I hope I can make it. We'll see.

Jun 16, 2009, 9:05pm (top)Message 17: Hogwarts_Express

This thread and the homepage have been updated. Compski and Kirby, do you want to retry your movie watch selections on the 11th and 18th? If so, who wants which night? We need to make a decision on that soon so people can get copies of your movies.

I put down Order of the Phoenix for July 4th, hosted by "Dobby" (aka, whoever shows up). It doesn't have to be Order of the Phoenix -- I just thought people might want to watch that one to refresh their memories in time for the upcoming release. I'm still not sure if I'll be there or not that evening.

~foggi

Jun 16, 2009, 10:03pm (top)Message 18: compskibook

I will take either one. Kirby can make the final decision.

Jun 16, 2009, 11:44pm (top)Message 19: kirbyowns

First of all: I am sooooo upset I missed the last movie! I got caught up in working on VBS stuff that I forgot! :(

Hmm....I'm not sure which date I will be in Washington yet. It will be one of those dates. I'll have to wait...

Jun 17, 2009, 8:28am (top)Message 20: compskibook

Kirby, maybe you should pick a weekend in August that you know you will be back for and someone else can do the extra weekend in July. Maybe the fourth could be a different HP movie, I could do the 11th, and the 18 could be OotP.

Jun 17, 2009, 10:03am (top)Message 21: biblioholic29

I just want to let everyone know that I'm still hosting this weekend. I have a new DVD player, so I shouldn't have anymore issues there.

Jun 18, 2009, 1:12am (top)Message 22: ChelseaBottomley

Oooo I can't wait for Saturday! I've been so busy or I'd forget about the group movie watch. But I love this movie so just remind me to come! ;)

Jun 20, 2009, 8:11am (top)Message 23: biblioholic29

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium tonight! I hope people will be able to attend!

Jun 20, 2009, 8:25am (top)Message 24: foggidawn

I'll be there! Espy is still having computer problems, but he and MrsE will be watching, so I'll relay their comments.

Jun 20, 2009, 11:21pm (top)Message 25: lefty33

Whoops! Sorry guys, I got caught up in reading pet stories. It was fun to join you for a few minutes! I'll be back when I've actually watched the movie to tell you how much I loved it too. ;)

Jun 23, 2009, 4:45pm (top)Message 26: compskibook

Foggi, I guess put me down for July 11. If Kirby can't do the 18, we can maybe put her down for August when she will be home for sure.

I can't wait for Bridget Jones, Edge of Reason! Yum! Donna, as the host, would you say Mr. Andrew is more like Hugh Grant or Colin Firth?

Jun 27, 2009, 7:50pm (top)Message 27: JPB

The heat out here (104F/40C) got to the chat room about a couple of hours ago. It's up and running now, with a new powerful fan keeping it cool. If it crashes again, I am going to move the server into the house.

Jun 27, 2009, 7:54pm (top)Message 28: MrAndrew

Thanks for the warning, JPB. Hope the weather cools down for you soon.

Jun 27, 2009, 8:28pm (top)Message 29: biblioholic29

So, I was planning to be there tonight, but I've just discovered that a new (to the U.S.) Doctor Who is on tonight. I'll try to stop in when it's over!

Jun 27, 2009, 8:54pm (top)Message 30: Kerian

#27 JPB:
Thank you, JPB! And what a horrid difference. I think I live very close to you. It's 90F here. I hope you have AC or that it cools down soon.

I don't have tonight's movie but may stop by all the same. My family's about to start Inkheart but it will be the second time that I've seen it.

Jul 4, 2009, 9:45pm (top)Message 31: foggidawn

We did our fireworks already, and now I am in chat, if anyone cares to join me. I don't have a movie in, but I could if we wanted one.

Jul 5, 2009, 9:05pm (top)Message 32: Hogwarts_Express

All right, the rest of July's schedule is set! We'll be watching Order of the Phoenix on the 18th, in anticipation of the Half-Blood Prince meet-ups on the 25th. Remember to come chat about the movie on the 26th, even if you're not part of one of the movie watch groups!

Also, if you want to choose and host an August movie watch, go ahead and sign up now! Dates are in the first post on this thread.

Jul 6, 2009, 8:39am (top)Message 33: biblioholic29

Are we sticking with the regular time on the 26th? Just wondering, I know people will be traveling that day so we don't want it too early, but people also have to work the next day...

....and there might be a new Doctor Who on that day...

Jul 6, 2009, 9:45am (top)Message 34: foggidawn

Well, I don't think we'll be discussing the movie for as long as it would take to watch a movie, if that makes sense, so I don't anticipate being up as late as we usually are on Saturday evenings. We could go a little earlier if we need to, but too early and it gets really inconvenient for the west coast -- and I'm hoping some or all of that meet-up group will come chat.

What time would not conflict with Dr. Who?

Jul 6, 2009, 9:59am (top)Message 35: biblioholic29

Apparently, I should have checked the BBC's schedule first, because it's showing earlier than the last new Who and 9:30 will actually be perfect. So nevermind, nothing to see here, go back to what you were doing. :)

Jul 6, 2009, 10:06am (top)Message 36: foggidawn

Yay! Glad that worked out. :-)

Jul 7, 2009, 12:42am (top)Message 37: lefty33

I watched Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium! (Did I spell his name close to correctly?) It was lovely! I'm sorry to have been a couple weeks late but I am glad I got to see it. There are some really great lines in there!

Jul 7, 2009, 9:13am (top)Message 38: biblioholic29

I was pretty sure you'd like it. It feels like the kind of magical place we would all frequent if we could!

Jul 9, 2009, 8:38pm (top)Message 39: compskibook

Don't forget Saturday we are going to try Master and Commander, The Far Side of the World again.

Jul 10, 2009, 11:12am (top)Message 40: littlegeek

If we get home from the wedding in time and there's no baseball game, I'll join you guys. I love that movie. It gives a pretty decent "flavor" of the books. (But read the books!)

Jul 18, 2009, 9:30pm (top)Message 41: foggidawn

We're watching Order of the Phoenix tonight, if anybody's interested! We'll probably start a few minutes late, so even if you're running behind, drop in and say hi!

Jul 19, 2009, 8:18pm (top)Message 42: Hogwarts_Express

Any takers for August movie watch dates (August 1, 8, 15, 22, or 29)? Remember, if you can't host on the normal day/time, we can arrange for the movie watch to happen at a time that fits your schedule! We need someone to take August 1 ASAP, so people can get their hands on the selected movie.

Jul 23, 2009, 7:37pm (top)Message 43: foggidawn

Nobody? We could do a Princess Bride re-watch on the first, since that's a movie lots of us have on hand. Or we could take a break from doing the movie watch for a while, if everyone's lost interest.

Jul 23, 2009, 9:15pm (top)Message 44: biblioholic29

I've been hesitant to host in August because I seem to keep having plans crop up...

Jul 24, 2009, 10:35am (top)Message 45: Mandy2

I'll be away just about every weekend in August...SCOTLAND HERE I COME!! 2 Weeks from today I'll be on a plane!

Jul 26, 2009, 8:41pm (top)Message 46: biblioholic29

Bad T-Storm, might miss the chat tonight. Will hit the thread tomorrow.

Jul 27, 2009, 9:45am (top)Message 47: jugglingpaynes

Yeah, we got that storm too. Pretty scary at times. I had to leave chat.

Jul 28, 2009, 2:37pm (top)Message 48: catbastet

Yeah, at times the thunder shook our house like an earthquake.

Jul 28, 2009, 9:49pm (top)Message 49: Espeon200

You only thought it was thunder. The giants were out in full force!

Jul 29, 2009, 2:07am (top)Message 50: MrAndrew

bowling. *nods wisely*

Aug 1, 2009, 6:24pm (top)Message 51: Hogwarts_Express

For August, I'm thinking whoever shows up in chat on Saturday nights can choose a movie together, and we'll go back to our normal member-hosted format in September -- sign up below to host one of those evenings!

Oh, and Princess Bride tonight, if anyone's interested!

Good call, Foggi. Thanks for being a wonderful manager for us!

Aug 5, 2009, 2:53pm (top)Message 54: PollyAnnaHP

I'll host Sept 12, not sure which movie I'll pick yet though....

Aug 29, 2009, 3:05pm (top)Message 55: foggidawn

Okay . . . is anybody going to be around for a movie this evening? I'm planning on watching something -- but I don't know what, yet, and I don't really know when, either. I'll try to remember to stick my head in to the chat room around the usual time.

Also, do we want to go back to the member-hosted format for September? PollyAnna, do you have a movie picked for the 12th? Does anybody want to host the 5th, 19th, or 26th? If we're doing one on the 5th (that's a holiday weekend in the USA, so I'm not sure what impact that might have on a movie watch), we need to pick it soon so people can get it.

Aug 29, 2009, 5:43pm (top)Message 56: littlegeek

I'll be home tonight for a change, but there's a Giants game. I will check in, tho. I miss you guys.

Sep 12, 2009, 7:39pm (top)Message 57: foggidawn

. . . Anybody? Or is everybody tired of this except for me?

Even if we're not going to do movies, we should set a regular time each week when people are likely to be in chat.

Either way, I'll be in tonight around 9:30 LT time.

Sep 12, 2009, 9:31pm (top)Message 58: foggidawn

Or not. Chat seems to be down. I'll try again in a little while, in case it's just me.

ETA: I'm in now!

I have a call-in shift next Saturday. I'm definitely busy afterward (surprise birthday party) but if they don't call me in I know where I want to be. I'll drop in chat if I don't have to go into work. :)

Sep 18, 2009, 11:07pm (top)Message 60: foggidawn

Arr! Since tomorrow do be Talk Like a Pirate Day, methinks it be only right to watch Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl for our movie watch. If any of ye scallywags be willin' to join me, we'll crew the chatroom and cast off at the usual time.

Sep 18, 2009, 11:16pm (top)Message 61: kirbyowns

Aye, i plan t' be thar unless I'm dragged off by my parents. A pence for an old man o'de sea?

Sep 19, 2009, 9:26pm (top)Message 62: Espeon200

It's been many a fine moon since I last laid eyes upon this talkin' picture. I be ready fer it!

Nov 14, 2009, 9:56pm (top)Message 63: foggidawn

Is anybody interested in doing group movie watches of holiday movies this Christmas season like we did last year?

Nov 14, 2009, 10:04pm (top)Message 64: PollyAnnaHP

Foggi, I would love too!

Nov 14, 2009, 10:21pm (top)Message 65: picolina

That would be awesome foggi! It's been a while since we've done a Group Movie Watch hasn't it?

Nov 14, 2009, 11:08pm (top)Message 66: foggidawn

Yep.

So, what does everyone want to watch this Christmas?

Nov 15, 2009, 5:33pm (top)Message 67: PollyAnnaHP

hhhmm, I've always been a fan of A Christmas Carol. I also love all the kids christmas shows, especially Charlie Brown.

Nov 15, 2009, 9:07pm (top)Message 68: compskibook

Last year we watched:

29 November 2008 -- White Christmas
6 December 2008 -- A Charlie Brown Christmas & The Muppet Christmas Carol
13 December 2008 -- Elf
20 December 2008 -- How The Grinch Stole Christmas
27 December 2008 -- Love Actually

Nov 15, 2009, 9:34pm (top)Message 69: jugglingpaynes

I can't get through the Christmas season without "The Year Without a Santa Claus"

*wanders off humming "I'm Mr Green Christmas, I'm Mr Sun.."*

...I'm mister heat blister, I'm mister hundred and one...

hoop de do, big woop. it's going to be 101 this week.

I think my favourite christmas movie is Scrooged.

"have you tried staples?"

Nov 15, 2009, 10:16pm (top)Message 71: foggidawn

#67 -- Which version of A Christmas Carol? I'm partial to the Patrick Stewart version, myself.

#69 -- Oh, I've never seen that one, JP!

Nov 16, 2009, 12:30am (top)Message 72: PollyAnnaHP

Foggi...I'm honestly not sure which version, I used to watch whichever one came on tv at Christmas time. So I guess I'm open to any.

MrA...what do/does staples have to do with Christmas programs?!

The Family Stone isn't actually a Christmas movie but it does take place over the Christmas holiday. It's another favorite.

I'm open to just about any movie...

Nov 16, 2009, 12:41am (top)Message 73: Kerian

I would love to but know I'm not going to get the Saturdays off. I also have to take my laptop in to get assistance getting our chatroom to work on it because it's blocked. I hope everyone has a wonderful time watching the movies together, though!

Nov 16, 2009, 10:10pm (top)Message 74: Renald128

I would love to watch Miracle on 34th street with you guys (I love the 1994 version because that's the one I used to watch when I was younger) but it would have to be a Saturday after December 11th because that's when I get vacations from college :P

Nov 17, 2009, 7:54pm (top)Message 75: littlegeek

I like Home for the Holidays, but that's Thanksgiving. I just love Robert Downey, Jr. sober or not. Planes, Trains & Automobiles, too. I guess I like Thanksgiving movies better than xmas ones.

Nov 20, 2009, 9:18pm (top)Message 76: lefty33

Planes and Trains is the best!!

Nov 23, 2009, 12:21pm (top)Message 77: mamzel

McAndrew- Scrooged is one of my favorites, too.

Carol Kane was hysterical!

Okay -- We have the following Saturdays coming up:

11/28
12/5
12/12
12/19
12/26

I won't be in town this Saturday (11/28). However, don't let that stop you! If anyone is planning on being around and wants to watch something, post here so that everyone will know. That would be a good weekend to watch one of the Thanksgiving movies mentioned above.

Since time is short, I'm proposing the following schedule:

12/5 -- Scrooged (1998)

12/12 -- A Christmas Carol (1999 version with Patrick Stewart)

12/19 -- The Year Without a Santa Claus (1974 version)

12/26 -- Miracle on 34th Street (1994 version)

That covers most of the suggestions made above. It puts the shortest one on the day of the gift exchange -- we could even watch it right after the gift exchange, if that would be more convenient than trying to watch it later in the evening. Is 9:30 LT time on Saturday evening still good for everyone? If the majority want it at a different time, we could move it.

What do you all think about the suggested schedule? Who's planning on watching?

Nov 24, 2009, 3:27pm (top)Message 81: foggidawn

#78/79 -- I'm with you, but we have to plan for it before Thanksgiving, or we won't be able to actually get around to watching them until January! :-)

Nov 25, 2009, 3:37pm (top)Message 82: ChelseaBottomley

I love The Year Without a Santa Claus! I hope I'll be able to make that one. And I have the old Miracle on 34th Street but I don't think I would be able to join the group watch anyway. I'd probably have some family thing. I'm looking forward to this next month. I love Christmas movies and the group watches are so much fun.

Nov 25, 2009, 8:34pm (top)Message 83: PollyAnnaHP

I picked up Scrooged from the library today, so we should hopefully be there. I make no promises.
