Hi - I just started this group because I wasn't able to find anything in LT for learners of the language. Seems anyone on LT interested in German is already pretty skilled. So, please feel free to join the party.

Hey! I'm a german major.... love to give help on anything german! or chat it up...
!!! My best recommendation is to READ! in german... my new favorite website is globalbooks.de the shipping is SUPER cheap!!!! it's great and they have everything! If you're looking for light reading Maxim Biller is great (short stories) or if you're good with something more substantial... i'm in LOVE with anything by Walter Moers, specifically "Der 13 1/2 Leben der Kaptain Blaubaer"

Thanks for the suggestion! When I was in German class, they had us translate weekly articles. It did help with a lot of the grammar stuff. I tend to listen to a lot of German music and that seems to help quite a bit too :)

You could try switching to the German version of LibraryThing, too :)

Wow, thanks for joining everyone. I've been on vacation for a couple of weeks and have gotten behind in my studies, but you've inspired me to get going again!
I agree with meggie10 about reading German. It's helped me tremendously to work through the written word. And I'm intrigued by the idea of listening to German music. If anyone has any suggestions I'd love them.

Well, what kind of music do you listen to? I can give suggestions easier that way because for some reason I quite the extensive collection of non-English music :P

Mostly indie-rock and alt-country, but for the purposes of learning a language, I guess I'd listen to most anything. Except maybe speed metal :-)

Well I got nothing for the country side, but for the alt or indie rock you could check out Silbermond, Etwas, or Wir Sind Helden. Here are some fun other ones outside of that genre too: Die Fantastichen Vier(Rap, kind of a silly version of the Beastie Boys), Die Arzte(Kind of punk-ish, but some of their lyrics are hilarious), and Die Prinzen(sorta pop, earlier stuff is more folk-ish pop). Enjoy! Let me know if you like any of them.

I have not been paying attention to my library listings for a while, so when I opened it today and found the invitation to join this group, I decided to dive right in. I am not a beginner, however: took German in high school in 1958-60; lived in Berlin from July of 1961 through December of 1963 (Die Schandmauer und John F. Kennedy); have a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in German language and literature and am a twice failed Ph.D candidate in German (failed for a number of reasons but never regretted the outcome); taught German in Klein, Texas; retired from public school administration a few years ago; now living in Elk River, Minnesota with the object in mind of moving out west when the house sells to be near the four kids and almost eleven grandchildren.
I find Freddy a good source of (albeit schmaltzy) music that is very understandable for the beginner. He was very popular in Germany in the 1960s and I still enjoy him. I have a reasonable library of German titles and enjoy reading and speaking every chance I get. If I can be of help, drop me a line.

I've been learning German from listening to Rammstein, however they are an acquired taste (listed variously as "industrial metal" and "tanz-metal") and they are not for children or those who are easily or even moderately offended. I will check out the short stories of Maxim Biller. I did think about reading German news articles online, but I'm not even interested in newspapers in English!

^You could try a German site and search for a type of article, ie music, politics, technology, etc.
I know a few bands with a similar sound as Rammstein that aren't as offensive. Eisbrecher and Oomph! are two that I really like. Though, for weird and morbid vocabulary, you can't really go wrong with Rammstein :P
