aka: "Where are you in Fantasyland II?"

I'm currently somewhere in limbo while I try to convince myself to return to Italy in Daylight, but I fully expect myself to be stuck in France and Hollywood with a fallen angel in a couple of days' time.

I'm in an anonymous US city in a world slightly different from our with the Cryptobiological Containment and Rescue Services people in Monster. We're trying to keep the yeti from eating all the ice cream in the local Food Mart. Although, it turns out they don't like vanilla...

My tour of Fantasyland is currently on hold as I bounce between travelling through Syndic space in Jack Campbell's Fearless and wandering the streets of San Francisco along with Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon.

I am poised to dive into the world of Warbreaker, however, and I've got a few other potential Fantasyland entry points lined up as well.

Jun 11, 2009, 9:56pm (top)Message 5: FicusFan

Thanks for the new thread. I am stuck in the real world reading required books this month. But hope to get back soon.

Jun 15, 2009, 6:18am (top)Message 7: Shanra

My tour in Fantasyland, currently sees me stranded at sea in broad Daylight, but afterwards my planned trip to tour 1920s Hollywood with a fallen angel will have to be post-poned. I think I'll go sing A Song for Arbonne instead. It'll be my third vacation in Arbonne. ^-^

Jun 17, 2009, 11:02am (top)Message 8: ncgraham

Ooooh, #3, I should like to go there soon! That's one of the McKillip books I've yet to read....

Yay! New thread!

I'm currently taking a short break on my journey, but fully expect to be both sailing on The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and joining The Fellowship of the Ring in a very short time.

Voodoo Season in New Orleans has just finished, so I'll either end up listening to the Whisper of Glocken or a Song for Arbonne as the mood strikes.

That or I'll be sauntering somewhere else in Fantasyland without quite knowing where until I get there.

Have just caught up with this thread after a long break. I've got a pile of fantasy and detective stories waiting but am currently alternating between the alternative Thirty Years War of Eric Flint's 1634: the Bavarian Crisis and the latest Jane Lindskold's Wolf books. Looking forward to returning to Sharon Shinn's world with Reader and raelynx.

I'm on New Earth and in Epic, in Epic, by Conor Kostick. I'm liking it fairly well. The idea is great, but the execution leaves a bit to be desired. I'm finding the writing to be very choppy.

I am reading A Choice of Destinies by Melissa Scott. It is about Alexander the Great and if he went west to Rome instead of east to India. I think it also has fantasy elements. I saw it on LT and got a used copy (its oop).

Jul 26, 2009, 1:42pm (top)Message 43: FicusFan

I finished A Choice of Destinies by Melissa Scott. It was historical fiction, really alternate history with a touch of fantasy (Greek gods) and SF (Alexandria in space).

It was about Alexander the Great, and what might have happened if he went west to Rome instead of east into India. He lived longer, was able to consolidate his realms allowing the empire to continue into the future. With no dark ages and religion held in check they developed faster scientifically. There were interludes from their future in between chapters of Alex in his own time dealing with the west.

I liked most of ideas and the characterizations. I find Scott's writing difficult and this was an earlier book (1986). The interludes were interesting, but made the story choppy. Still it was enjoyable and worthwhile.

She did have some differences with history before Alex had to make the choice to return to the west, and there was no explanation: Thebes was not destroyed, he had a 10 year old son. Would have liked that explained.

I just returned from another visit to Sealey Head; I rarely read a book twice in a year but this one was just begging me to. I had a lovely time speaking with Judd, Gwyneth, Ridley, and Miranda, and even managed to get Emma to open a door so I could have a few words with Princess Ysabo as well. Somehow I avoided both the Sproules and Mrs. Quinn's cooking.

Aug 4, 2009, 11:48am (top)Message 54: JannyWurts

#53, I loved Sealey Head, too. Had me listening for the bell, for days.

I finished Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. It is a YA fantasy that I was reading for a RL book group. It was OK, but not my cup of tea. Very simplistic, and kind of a disguised romance.

Aug 8, 2009, 8:13am (top)Message 61: kingoftheicedragons

I'm currently reading The Stepsister Scheme by Jim C. Hines; however, it's taking me some time to get through it due to my book club reading The Book Thief right now.

I'm in Osten Ard trying to get the final two swords (To Green Angel Tower by Tad Williams), but tiring of it at present. Maybe I'll just take a small trip to a juvenile Discworld as in The Wee Free Men.

I'm in Randland again. The Fires of Heaven.

Aug 9, 2009, 9:44pm (top)Message 67: DirtPriest

Osten Ard is a wonderful place with a windy but worthy ending. It is one of my all-time favorites. I'm walking through Scotland with Robert the Bruce on my way back to Krynn's Fifth Age for an extended vacation. I just can't get enough DragonLance!

Exploring Gormenghast with Titus Groan.

Aug 13, 2009, 2:41pm (top)Message 70: Shanra

Oooh, I hope you're enjoying Gormenghast, Saltmanz!

Today I've travelled from London to hear The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker to New York to visit the Fables: Animal Farm to Westeros and reacquaint myself with Ser Duncan the Tall who'd become a Sworn Sword.

I'm not sure yet where my wanderings will tale me next, however.

Aug 13, 2009, 3:03pm (top)Message 71: saltmanz

I am, thanks! It's slow going, though oddly, the pages seem to turn quickly--it's just paced such that I can't do more than 20 pages or so at a time. But the prose is wonderfully evocative and amusing, and the characters so very richly textured.

Aug 13, 2009, 4:15pm (top)Message 72: Shanra

*nods* That's a good way to describe the book. The sheer amount of detail can be quite overwhelming, but it's so beautifully done...

Aug 13, 2009, 4:21pm (top)Message 73: DWWilkin

Goddess Lady, Randland??? I am right behind you in my reread. I started The Shadow Rising again last night. This will be about the eighth time I've read it...

#73 DWWilkin This is still just my first time through. Since my last post here, I'm now in A Crown of Swords. I hope to be caught up through The Gathering Storm by the end of the year. It would go faster if I didn't take a break between each installment and read something else...The Wheel of Time is just so dense, I feel like I need something light in between to cleanse the palate!

Oh...were you questioning my use of the word "Randland"? That's what the world is called! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randland

Nov 14, 2009, 10:49am (top)Message 77: DWWilkin

Didn't know that the world was called that. I did get all the way through the reread by early October and waited for The Gathering Storm (which of course I have been waiting for a long time...

It was worth and I reviewed it. Now another year to wait for the next... I last heard the writing on that was 2/3rds complete. I think it is called A Memory of Light

Nov 14, 2009, 11:18am (top)Message 78: goddessladyj

Brandon Sanderson is my favorite. I even like his writing better than Robert Jordan's, so I'm super excited to get to The Gathering Storm.

Sanderson is great about updates on his website: http://www.brandonsanderson.com
