Jul 1, 2009, 6:49pm (top)Message 1: biblioholic29Got started on my Sorcerer's Stone reread today. Isn't it great how that first sentence just completely transports you? This is actually the first time I've reread it since reading DH (last year I listened to the audio) and I started crying when Harry got Hedwig. I also truly never cease to be amazed at how much detail Jo gave in the first few chapters that turned out to be major plot points by DH. She's a bloody GENIUS and classes will be taught about this for a long, long time! I have also started rereading Sorcerer's Stone. I needed a confort read and that is the first book that came to mind. I am putting my other reads aside for the moment. I just finished my reread of SS and COS and am starting POA tonight. I kinda feel outta the loop here since everyone so far has been reading HP. But oh well...right now I've just started reading the first book in the Landover series. Jul 2, 2009, 2:26am (top)Message 5: ChocoholicBecAt the moment, I'm re-(re-re-re-re-re-re-...)-reading The Secret Garden. However, I'm planning to re-(re-re-re-re-re-re...)-read Deathly Hallows after I've finished it. I finally finished my reread of HBP, which I intended to be finished with well before the movie. Now it's just a bit before the movie. Oh well. I enjoyed HBP more than usual. It's not very high in my HP rankings, but I think it's just moved up a little. I've picked up Dragonspell and the first Charlie Bone book but I'm not far enough in to say whether I like either. Finishing one book and starting two is probably not a good habit. Jul 2, 2009, 12:37pm (top)Message 7: littlegeekI'm still reading Naamah's Kiss, which I am kind of savouring. After this, I think I'm gonna reread HBP in anticipation of the movie. I love being able to say, "hey, that's not in the book!" and be right. Besides, I'm going with laia & Kerian so I have to know my stuff! Jul 2, 2009, 12:39pm (top)Message 8: littlegeekCan it really be TWO YEARS since Deathly Hallows came out? Remember how crazed we were? Good times.... #5 Welcome to HE 8) Jul 2, 2009, 12:40pm (top)Message 10: MEM82Oh wow! I can't believe I been hanging out here for that long. Definitely good times. 8) Jul 2, 2009, 3:09pm (top)Message 11: Kerian#7 LG: Heeheehee. I could bring my Harry Potter quiz book! The downside is it's only for up to book four, unfortunately. ;) RE #8 & 10: Outstandingly good times! Well, this month I am worried. There's a lot to finish, a lot to reread, and some other books I want to read before meeting LG and laia so I can discuss the books with them in person. That said, I'm still in P&P&Z and am picking up my 10th anniversary edition of SS by Saturday. It will be a reread of a book for which I've never read the copy of. Jul 2, 2009, 3:51pm (top)Message 12: pollysmithI am currently reading a book by Katherine Neville called "The Eight" Its really interesting but its hard to explain Jul 2, 2009, 4:04pm (top)Message 13: foggidawnI'm reading The Last Knight by Hilari Bell -- it's okay, but I really should have picked something other than YA fantasy to read after The Dragon of Trelian so I wouldn't be constantly making comparisons. Jul 2, 2009, 4:25pm (top)Message 14: Kerian#13 foggi: I feel the same way about books revolving around vampires. Jul 2, 2009, 6:09pm (top)Message 15: Ms_BellaToday I borrowed Dead until Dark from a friend. I am going to read that this weekend to see if I am into it before buying my own copies of the books. Jul 2, 2009, 7:04pm (top)Message 16: biblioholic29Just finished SS/PS so I'll start CoS either tonight or tomorrow... Jul 2, 2009, 8:02pm (top)Message 17: lefty33Foggi, have you read anything else by Hilari Bell? I read The Goblin Wood a while ago and really liked it. I haven't read The Last Knight though. Jul 3, 2009, 12:47pm (top)Message 18: LadyNJust got the epilogue of Dissolution to read, and then will either jump straight into Dark Fire (the novel, not the hot ouchy flamey thing, or The Reader. Message edited by its author, Jul 3, 2009, 12:48pm. Jul 3, 2009, 4:05pm (top)Message 19: mindylou182I'm still rereading Deathly Hallows. One night I got freaked out though after work because when I got home I noticed it was missing from my stack of books. And when I looked at my bookshelf all of my HP books were missing. I asked everyone where they were. Then I asked my brother's friend if he had them and he was like, "Oh yeah. They are right here." It bothers me when people take things from my shelf without telling me (or asking me). Jul 4, 2009, 10:35am (top)Message 20: Renald128#19: I hate when people take ANY of my stuff without telling me, mindy. And I am rereading Deathly Hallows too, I must admit that I cried with one of the death scenes, and it was really stupid coz I already knew what was coming and I didn't cry the first time I read it :P Jul 4, 2009, 4:48pm (top)Message 21: grkmwkFinally finished The Floating Book: A Novel of Venice, which while slow to get into, proved to be an engaging read. The historical detail was very rich, and I was delighted to learn in the afterward that many of the details were based in reality. For my next read, I debated starting something old and familiar, as my life is a bit up in the air at the moment while we wait on the baby to decide he's ready to arrive, but I decided instead to start something new, as that might prove a more engaging distraction. So, I've picked up what I hope will be light and quick: Girls in Trucks. Jul 4, 2009, 6:23pm (top)Message 22: foggidawn#17 -- I read The Wizard Test a while back, and enjoyed it. I'm liking The Last Knight, too, now that I have gotten in to it. It just took me a day or two. I also picked up Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind at a used book sale today, and started it, since I didn't have anything else on hand -- I like it, but it seems vaguely familiar, as if I might have read it several years ago. Jul 4, 2009, 7:43pm (top)Message 23: cmbohn22 - What did you think of Dragon of Trelian? I just started The Name of the Rose. I'm on pg 70 and have like 450+ pages to go! I'm really feeling drawn into the world, but I'm not enjoying all the Latin. I don't speak or read Latin! Are footnotes too much to ask? Jul 4, 2009, 9:19pm (top)Message 24: foggidawn#23 -- I really enjoyed it! I'm wanting the sequel now. :-) Jul 4, 2009, 10:14pm (top)Message 25: Ms_BellaI went to the book store today and picked up Alyson Noel's Blue Moon I can't wait to read it but I think I will have to do a reread of Evermore. Jul 6, 2009, 8:35am (top)Message 26: foggidawnNow I'm reading Thirteenth Child -- I'm so excited to see something new by Patricia C. Wrede! Jul 6, 2009, 8:36am (top)Message 27: biblioholic29I'm still working on Chamber of Secrets. I kept getting distracted by Tennis in the morning and family in the afternoons. I'm sure I'll finish it tonight though. Jul 6, 2009, 2:35pm (top)Message 28: readafewLadyN > what do you think of Dissolution? I've read that and Dark Fire and Sovereign's turn is coming up shortly. They really make you feel like you're in 16th Century England don't they? Jul 6, 2009, 2:50pm (top)Message 29: compskibookI finished Battle of the Labyrinth yesterday and really liked it. Now, is The Demigod Files required reading or just a side book? I am plugging along with my Harry Potter and the Teenage Angst reread and I think today I will start The Professor and the Madman. Jul 6, 2009, 3:20pm (top)Message 30: biblioholic29The Demigod Files isn't required, but it is a fun extra look at the world. And it helps to somewhat elaborate on some of the minor characters, which helps some of the events in The Last Olympian. It's more important than say, Quiddich through the Ages is to HP. Perhaps more like what His Book would be to The Book. You don't have to read it to follow the story, but you learn more than you otherwise would have. I just finished Chamber of Secrets so I'll get moving on Prisoner of Azkaban tonight. I can't wait to get rid of these cats tomorrow, for some reason they've really interrupted my reading time. Jul 6, 2009, 4:12pm (top)Message 31: littlegeekI couldn't stand it and yesterday I stopped reading Naamah's Kiss temporarily and began rereading HBP. It goes fast, tho, I just read the "Ron gets poisoned" scene. Jul 6, 2009, 4:48pm (top)Message 32: Kerian#29 compaki: Very nice touchstone. :) I was reading P&P&Z the other day when I had to drop my jaw so stunned to be reading what I was reading. I think I may have screamed. Heehee. Almost done reading it! Jul 6, 2009, 6:38pm (top)Message 33: compskibook32: K, I wonder if your jaw dropped at the same place my jaw dropped :-O Jul 6, 2009, 6:42pm (top)Message 34: jugglingpaynescatbastet desperately wants to know where your jaws dropped because she thinks she missed it. You can PM her if you want. I haven't read it yet. Jul 6, 2009, 9:45pm (top)Message 35: pollysmithI'm reading something called the Witches' Hammer by Jane Stanton Hitchcock. Interesting read about black magic, witches and grimoires but too much sex Jul 7, 2009, 4:27am (top)Message 36: KerianRE #33 and 34: I created a place safe for spoilers. Follow the link to the P&P&Z: Discuss thread. Jul 7, 2009, 12:18pm (top)Message 37: elbakeroneLooking forward to jumping in on the P&P&Z thread, but I have a few library books to read before I get to that one... Right now I'm reading League of the Scarlet Pimpernel which I don't like quite as much as the first one, but it's still a pretty fun story. Next up is either Blue Bloods or Blood of Flowers (not sure why my latest library trip landed me with two bloody books....) ;) And as for the whole "can't believe it's been two years since DH came out", what's even crazier is that I just realized that my home page lists me as an LT member since June 8, 2006 - really??? THREE YEARS??? No wonder I can't remember much of the days before LT. Thanks to all you wonderful folks for making those three years fly by in a rush of wonderful reading! :) Message edited by its author, Jul 7, 2009, 12:18pm. Jul 7, 2009, 12:23pm (top)Message 38: kirbyownsWell let's see. First I'm trying to play catch up on the threads. Then, I'm rereading Sorcerer's Stone. I'm also still reading Magic Kingdom For Sale. I just finished Dead Until Dark. I'm way behind in my reading and relaxation for the summer. VBS is over, so now I'll have some time for myself. Jul 7, 2009, 12:27pm (top)Message 39: biblioholic29I've got to finish up my HP reread before I read P&P&Z. I tried starring and red xing the thread, so that I won't see it right now, but it'll be easy to find when I'm ready. #37: Let me know when you've read Blood of Flowers, I really loved that one and think about it at least once a week. Jul 7, 2009, 1:46pm (top)Message 40: jugglingpaynesel, have you read The Elusive Pimpernel? I liked that one, although I was annoyed that Marguerite (is that right?) became such a worrier. Jul 7, 2009, 2:21pm (top)Message 41: elbakerone#40 - No, but I'll have to add it to my TBR! I read the first one (The Scarlet Pimpernel) and now I'm reading League. I love the characters and the adventure-y stuff, but TSP was a more straightforward story whereas LotSP is told in a more vignette style. It's still really enjoyable but I slightly preferred the first. Jul 7, 2009, 5:30pm (top)Message 42: jugglingpaynes41: I love the first, but since a lot of the same characters are in the second book (Elusive Pimpernel), it feels like an extension of the first book. Jul 7, 2009, 9:57pm (top)Message 43: Ms_BellaI finished my reread of Evermore and finished reading Blue Moon which was just as wonderful as the first. I felt like reading something a with a little more horror so I picked up Insomnia and am hoping that I can get through it... Jul 7, 2009, 11:26pm (top)Message 44: Kerian#37 el: Happy belated three year LT anniversary! :) I'd done with P&P&Z and am now reading about the wonderful boy who lived. Words are grabbing my attention here and there making me think of later books in the series. (Ex. Gingerly --> Crookshanks; jam (verb) --> raspberry jam, Dumbledore's favorite.) Message edited by its author, Jul 7, 2009, 11:27pm. Jul 8, 2009, 12:00am (top)Message 45: mindylou182I'm rereading The Book Thief. Jul 8, 2009, 3:21pm (top)Message 46: 06nwingertI'm read The Magician: Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, The Magician's Apprentice, and Stealing Myspace. Jul 9, 2009, 5:58am (top)Message 47: LadyN#28, readafew - Yes, really enjoyed it! I wasn't quite sure what to expect, as I love historical fiction, particularly of the Tudor era. It was intersting to read a book set against that political backdrop, but without directly being a speculation specifically about the monarchy. Will write a review later. Am about to start Dark Fire properly, but having a reading rest. Will get stuck in on the train tomorrow I think. Jul 9, 2009, 9:38am (top)Message 48: readafewJul 9, 2009, 11:12am (top)Message 49: LadyNHurrah! We shall compare notes, when I'm caught up with you! Jul 9, 2009, 11:34am (top)Message 50: lefty33Nwing, I've had The Magician on my TBR list for a while. I'd like to hear how you like it! Jul 9, 2009, 3:28pm (top)Message 51: elbakerone#44 - thanks :) #45 - *passes tissues* I finished Blue Bloods - entertaining if not phenomenal. Couldn't help but think of it as Twilight meets Gossip Girl. Such a quick read that I may pick up the rest of the series one of these days... Started Blood of Flowers this morning and it drew me in right away. I think this might be one of those books that I want to hide under my desk at work so I can read a page here and there and never quite pull fully away from... Jul 9, 2009, 3:37pm (top)Message 52: biblioholic29#51: :) Jul 9, 2009, 7:40pm (top)Message 53: Ms_BellaI am still reading Insomnia (of course) but I was given a copy of Dean Koontz The Husband today so I am going to make one my work book and one my home book! Jul 9, 2009, 10:07pm (top)Message 54: 06nwingert50 lefty, I'm enjoying The Magician, although I think I might enjoy it a bit more if I'd read book 1 ( The Alchemyst) first. I like seeing Nicholas Flamel outside of the HP/DVC context. Jul 9, 2009, 10:59pm (top)Message 55: Renald128I finished my HP reread and I must say I enjoyed DH more this time around because I wasn't scared for my favorite characters. I am going to start reading Shibumi which is very highly recommended by a friend of mine. Jul 10, 2009, 4:42pm (top)Message 56: lefty33I really need to read Blood of Flowers. Last night I finished Midnight for Charlie Bone, which was better than I expected but not exactly amazing. With its similar style cover art, I always considered it the off-brand Harry Potter. Still reading Dragonspell and liking it very much. Dragons are such lovely creatures. :) Jul 10, 2009, 6:27pm (top)Message 57: biblioholic29#56: Yep! I don't know if I've mentioned that I'm on PoA now. I'm also reading Great Expectations on gutenberg and I'm actually enjoying it! The first Dickens I've liked! Jul 11, 2009, 1:34am (top)Message 58: KerianI've finished rereading SS and am starting my reread of CoS. Jul 11, 2009, 7:38am (top)Message 59: lefty33Bib, I love the story of Great Expectations. There are parts where I wish Dickens would get on with it already, but I love the story. Jul 13, 2009, 11:53am (top)Message 60: LadyNI'm training myself to listen to audiobooks. I find them difficult as my mind wanders or I feel soothed into sleep by the narration. I'm currently listening to The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters, read by Simon Vance. I'm really enjoying it so far, and have only had to wind back once or twice.... Jul 13, 2009, 2:18pm (top)Message 61: 06nwingertLast night, I reread The Tales of Beedle the Bard and a few chapters of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince while listening to Goblet of Fire. Tonight, I have Idiot America, Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer, The Unlikely Disciple, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to read. Jul 13, 2009, 4:25pm (top)Message 62: sugeI left my HP re-read till really late so I'm still on OoTP. I have plenty of time to finish the re-read of HBP before the meetup, but I've become a snob in my old age and will only read the children's UK version of any HP books (I think my new credo goes a little like "American version is for amateurs"). Unfortunately, I can't find a copy of HBP anywhere, other than Amazon. I literally called every, and I mean literaly. every. book. shop. in Manhattan and BK with no luck. sigh. I'm also reading Totally Fabulous, the second book in a really cute series about an English girl with ESP. He he he they call themselves Espees. Jul 13, 2009, 4:25pm (top)Message 63: sugeThis message has been deleted by its author. Jul 13, 2009, 4:30pm (top)Message 64: littlegeekSuge!!! Hi, suge!! Jul 13, 2009, 10:21pm (top)Message 67: lefty33Good to see you Suge! I hope you're feeling better! I just finished The Culture Clash, which is a dog behavior and training book. It was awesome. Every dog owner should read it. Jul 13, 2009, 11:37pm (top)Message 68: jugglingpaynesI just finished Forever Rose, which I was much happier with than the last two books in that series. Jul 14, 2009, 7:48am (top)Message 69: Ms_BellaMy list keeps growing... I am reading The Wildflowers By: V.C. Andrews, The Husband by: Dean Koontz, and I think I gave up on Insomnia I just cant seem to get into the heavy reading.... Jul 14, 2009, 8:18am (top)Message 70: lefty33So Insomnia was making you sleepy? ;) Jul 14, 2009, 12:12pm (top)Message 71: mindylou182I've almost finished my re-read of The Book Thief. I also read a couple pages of my ER book Aracoeli but I started it at like midnight and I couldn't really concentrate. Jul 14, 2009, 4:32pm (top)Message 72: sugeHey guys! Big hugs all around! Lefty I'm feeling lots better thanks! Ron I dont blame ya. Its a pretty funny name. and the story after I got home and changed pants suddenly became significantly funnier. Jul 15, 2009, 8:53am (top)Message 73: biblioholic29Finished up Great Expectations yesterday, so I'm going to attempt another Dickens, Bleak House, we'll see how it goes. Jul 15, 2009, 9:36am (top)Message 74: SpottyblanketI'm currently reading The Tiger in the Well by Phillip Pullman. Wonderful stuff. Jul 15, 2009, 11:38am (top)Message 75: Ms_Bellalol Lefty, yes Insomnia was making me sleepy. I just couldn't get into it. I think it is because of summer. I like easy fluff reads in summer. Jul 15, 2009, 1:16pm (top)Message 76: foggidawn*waves to suge* #68 -- I loved Forever Rose! I agree, it's one of the strongest in that series. Let's see, what have I read? Well, I actually did a lot of reading on the plane to the conference and back. - I finished Thirteenth Child by Patricia C. Wrede, which I really loved. It's such a fresh take on magic. - I read The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan, which I've been hearing a lot about. It was scarier than my usual reads (maybe the first zombie book I've read?) and very sad, too. It's a good book, but not really my thing. - I read Rapture of the Deep: Being an Account of the Further Adventures of Jacky Faber, Soldier, Sailor, Mermaid, Spy by L. A. Meyer, which was fluffy fun like the rest of the series -- no big surprises there! I love the Bloody Jack series, so was thrilled to get an advance copy of this one, which will be published in September. - I read Viola in Reel Life by Adriana Trigiani, which reminded me of one of this year's earlier reads, Alive and Well in Prague, New York. It was good young teen novel. - I read Heartsinger by Karlijn Stoffels, a lovely little book with a sort of dreamy, mythical quality. It was originally published in the Netherlands, and I actually went to a panel discussion where the author, translator, editor, and publisher talked about the process of finding the book and getting it published in the USA, which was really interesting. (And it meant I got to meet Arthur A. Levine, J.K. Rowling's US editor. I managed not to squee too much about that at the time, but I thought it was pretty darn cool.) - I started Violet Wings by Victoria Hanley. So far it's completely unlike her other books -- meant for a slightly younger audience, for one thing -- but a fun little read. Jul 15, 2009, 2:29pm (top)Message 77: mindylou182I just finished my re-read of The Book Thief. I forgot how amazing it was. Jul 15, 2009, 2:41pm (top)Message 78: littlegeekI just downloaded Stone's Fall, the new Iain Pears novel. If I ever finish Naamah's Kiss, I'll start reading it. I like Jacqueline Carey, but her editor needs to sharpen her pencil. There are some seriously long and tedious dead spots in this book! Jul 15, 2009, 2:56pm (top)Message 79: cmbohnThirteenth Child sounds really good. I will have to look for that one. I finished Under Western Eyes and am ready to start Cry, the Beloved Country. Jul 15, 2009, 3:13pm (top)Message 80: kirbyownsI just started Dead to the World, which also means I finished Club Dead, Living Dead in Dallas, and Dead Until Dark. I'm almost finished with my re-re-re-re...read of Sorcerer's Stone, and am still working on Magic Kingdom for Sale. Jul 15, 2009, 9:42pm (top)Message 81: catbastetI read Forever Rose, which was great, and I'm about two-thirds of the way through The Woman in White, despite it almost getting ruined and lost. Jul 15, 2009, 11:48pm (top)Message 82: jugglingpaynesAnd I want to thank me for saving cat's almost ruined book. We are having issues with a nervous kitty. Her method of dealing with anxiety is...less than acceptable. And bleach is a wonderful thing. I'm reading The Gods of Manhattan. Not very far in, but it is a very interesting read. Jul 15, 2009, 11:59pm (top)Message 83: mindylou182I'm going to start reading Rant so I can get that back to my friend before he goes off to school. But I also need to read my ER book so I can write a review! Jul 16, 2009, 11:23am (top)Message 84: sugeFOGGI! *runs and hugs foggi (almost tackling her in the process)* I still have about 10 more pages left of OoTP. I brought in my dilapitated to the extreme copy of HBP (there is a 30 page detachable section near the back and I'm pretty sure Scholastic didn't put a sort of center fold area in the book, right?). I'm really into my re-read, but I'm very nervous because like I said I haven't re-read DH. I was crying so much yesterday. Sirius. My love..... Jul 16, 2009, 11:42am (top)Message 85: kirbyownsFinnegan doesn't think I should read HP in bed. I don't know why. It's not like my book light is keeping him from sleeping. He hasn't done this with any other book. Maybe he wants me to read it out loud to him. Jul 16, 2009, 11:43am (top)Message 86: kirbyownsSUGE! Glad to see you. That sounds like you have an extra special copy of HBP. I wonder how much it would go for. Jul 16, 2009, 11:51am (top)Message 87: sugeHEY KIRB! umm you know, what? I think that my copy looks a little like the namesake's potions book. People might think its the original! Let me write in little notes and dangerous spells! Jul 16, 2009, 12:02pm (top)Message 88: kirbyownsSounds like a plan! Jul 16, 2009, 12:03pm (top)Message 89: jugglingpaynesAll I heard was HBP and centerfold. Jul 16, 2009, 12:16pm (top)Message 90: sugeshhhhh JP! Don't let foggi hear that. She will be unable to contain her excitment. Jul 16, 2009, 12:17pm (top)Message 91: elbakeroneI finished Blood of Flowers (excellent book!) and just started Pride and Prejudice and Zombies - looking forward to joining the discussion thread! Jul 16, 2009, 12:40pm (top)Message 92: foggidawn#89 -- Wait, what?!? ;-) Jul 16, 2009, 4:03pm (top)Message 93: sugenaughty girl! Jul 18, 2009, 5:39pm (top)Message 94: 06nwingertCurrently reading: Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer, Idiot America, and Deathly Hallows. When I go to work at the library this week, I'm going to get Grimm's Fairy Tales, Last Exit to Normal, and the Communist Manifesto. For some unknown reason, I'm ion the mood to reread His Dark Materials. Jul 20, 2009, 10:31am (top)Message 95: biblioholic29For some reason it took me an inordinately long amount of time for me to really get into Potterworld this year. It didn't happen until Saturday, when I read pretty much all of GoF (okay, I read like 50 pages Fri. night) then I read a huge chunk of OotP yesterday and should finish it tonight. I'm wondering if it took so long this time because I didn't have the time to devote that patchy employment and no friends gave me in the past.... Also, to any fellow Song of Ice and Fire fans, more casting has been confirmed for the HBO pilot. Check the Ice and Fire group for more! Jul 20, 2009, 10:34am (top)Message 96: littlegeekJul 20, 2009, 10:35pm (top)Message 97: catbastetI finished The Woman in White, which was very good, and Tithe, which was also good, if a bit dark and icky in parts for my taste. Jul 22, 2009, 9:44am (top)Message 98: biblioholic29I'm blowing through my HP reread now. I've only got about 130 pages left of HBP, so I should finish that tonight and possibly get a start on DH (though SYTYCD is on tonight, so I'll have less reading time than I have had). This means I've read about 2300 pages in the last week. Not including my gutenberg read. I think I might just have kicked my reading rut! Jul 22, 2009, 10:16am (top)Message 99: sugeHey, me too, bib. I've only just started on DH. Its my first re-read since '07. I'm kinda scared because the first read kinda traumatized me (I don't think I've ever cried so much in my entire life). This time I've been a little more composed. Jul 22, 2009, 10:35am (top)Message 100: foggidawnI started Runemarks but couldn't get in to it, so set it aside. I'm having trouble settling on something to read at the moment. Jul 22, 2009, 11:42am (top)Message 101: lefty33I finished Dragonspell which was okay but nothing really special. I'm also reading The Witch Family. It is proving to be my least favorite Eleanor Estes book thus far. Usually I love her books. Over the weekend I started Gathering Blue, a companion to The Giver. I'm seeing a lot of similarities between the two and, at less than halfway through, I think I've already figured out the whole book. It's probably time for some trusted rereads. I've read several "meh" books in a row now. Jul 22, 2009, 1:42pm (top)Message 102: elbakeroneI finished Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and just started Heart-Shaped Box. Jul 22, 2009, 2:11pm (top)Message 103: compskibook101: Lefty, I feel like I am reading a "meh" book now. I am hoping to get lots of book suggestions at our midwest meetup! Jul 22, 2009, 2:13pm (top)Message 104: cmbohnI read Mrs, Presumed Dead last night and I'm still reading Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human. I'm really enjoying it. Jul 22, 2009, 2:33pm (top)Message 105: 06nwingert98, 99 bib and suge: Yesterday was the 2 year anniversary of the release of DH. As I'm rereading, I try to remember exactly how I felt reading DH 2 years ago, despite several rereads since its release. Jul 22, 2009, 3:03pm (top)Message 106: biblioholic29#105: The opposite of me then. The thing I love about rereads (all rereads) is the differences you see in the way you read it. The things you pay attention to. Each time I reread HP, my worldview has changed ever so slightly, and therefore what I take from the stories changes. For instance, within the last year, I've started to feel like an adult. I'm therefore identifying with the adults in the story far more than I ever have before. Snape in particular. I love that feeling, it keeps things fresh. :) Jul 22, 2009, 5:34pm (top)Message 107: littlegeekWow, we didn't commemorate the anniversary! It was so great to share that with all of you. The fun we had! Jul 22, 2009, 7:49pm (top)Message 108: MarensrWow it is strange it has been 2 years already. I recently finished my early reviewers book and finally reviewed it Au Revoir to All That and I read American Gods I am getting ready to start The Amnesiac Jul 23, 2009, 1:41pm (top)Message 109: sugeI don't think I'll ever forget the frenzy of the month or so coming up to the release in 07. There were moments where I thougth my head would explode with the anticipation. We were completely out of control. and as LG said it was wonderful to share that time with you guys. Wow two years! I really couldn't bring myself to re-read DH. I planned re-reads several times, but I never went through with it. Jul 23, 2009, 3:02pm (top)Message 110: Ms_BellaOkay, so I still haven't finished any of the books I have been reading I just haven't been able to get into them. But I picked up Everything's Eventual last night and I think short stories are exactly what I am in the mood for... Jul 23, 2009, 7:21pm (top)Message 111: foggidawnI've started a reread of the Hollow Kingdom trilogy. I'm noticing lots of details that I had either forgotten or not noticed last time I read this. Jul 23, 2009, 10:28pm (top)Message 112: cmbohnWe are reading Don Quixote for my book club. Did you know that book has 1124 pages???!! At least, my edition does. NOT counting the preface, introduction, author's biography, and footnotes! I just started this afternoon and I'm at page 58. I figure if I can do 100 pages a day, it will take me 11 days to finish. Which is doable, but then I have other stuff I'm reading too! Maybe I should have gotten the abridged version! Jul 23, 2009, 10:39pm (top)Message 113: foggidawnI think I started Don Quixote once. My copy is an ancient paperback with ridiculously small type, and is still 940 pages. I might read it someday. . . . Right now, I'm moving on to Close Kin, but I am making myself pack for the weekend and clean the kitchen first. Jul 24, 2009, 11:10am (top)Message 114: sugeSame here. I got to the part about the windmills and next thing you know I'm reading somehting else..... and something else... Someday I'll finish it too. Jul 24, 2009, 11:56am (top)Message 115: elbakeroneI just finished Heart-Shaped Box and it was one of the best ghost stories I've read in a while. Very much the kind of book that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and has you peeking over your shoulder at night to make sure nothing's sneaking up on you. ;) Next up - for a complete change of pace - is The Secret Garden. I'll ask you all to hold off the rotten tomatoes (or at least provide a table to duck under) when I admit that it's not a reread...I've actually never read it. I've seen the play, two movie versions and heard the musical soundtrack more times than I can count, but the actual novel is brand new to me. Jul 24, 2009, 12:05pm (top)Message 116: biblioholic29#115: *GASP* WOW! Well, enjoy it, el! I'm a little over halfway done with DH, though I'm not seeing myself getting a lot of reading done this weekend somehow. Perhaps when I inevitably wake up two hours earlier than everyone else I'll get some done. Not that I'm complaining, hanging with HEers is a good reason to postpone reading time. Jul 25, 2009, 6:26pm (top)Message 117: LadyNI'm reading The Reader at the moment, but having gone to see HBP tonight I feel inspired towards an HP re-read. It may just be spur of the moment. We shall see how I feel when I've finished what I've started... Jul 25, 2009, 11:10pm (top)Message 118: KerianSince I've been here last I've reread books 2-5 of the HP books, and read one first-time read, A Friend at Midnight (an ER book). I'm going to start rereading HBP this weekend. Jul 25, 2009, 11:22pm (top)Message 119: molliewattsOn my re-read of all the books and I'm about a 1/4 of the way through Half-Blood Prince. Probably shouldn't be doing that, seeing as how I had just finished reading Order of the Phoenix when that movie came out and I was so disappointed in it! I like it okay, now...they just left out a lot. So, yes, haven't seen the new movie, yet, so perhaps I should put down the book : ) I also was reading Guy Gavriel Kay's Ysabel, which I didn't finish but plan to - got caught up in my HP again and it was due back at the library, so... Jul 27, 2009, 3:16pm (top)Message 120: 06nwingertMy late July/ early August reads include: a reread of some of my favorites, The God Delusion and His Dark Materials, as well as The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder, Truth and Consequences by Keith Olberman, and Street Art and the War in Iraq. Since I have to go back to school in 3 weeks, these will be my last summer reads :-( I also want to pick up one of those learn French (or any other foreign language) audios at the library this afternoon in order to get my mind back in French mode for school. Jul 27, 2009, 4:50pm (top)Message 121: veronica1989I'm reading Outlander and Eat,Pray,Love. You guys remebered me that i wanna reread Sorcerer's Stone a long time ago,i just don't know when i'll be able to do it...It must be magical to see the details of the beggining of the story that are connected to the whole rest...I think i'll cry too, when i reread...Yeah,Jo is a bloody genious... :) Jul 27, 2009, 9:17pm (top)Message 122: lefty33I've been reading The Neverending Story and loving it. Somehow I never read it when I was younger. Jul 28, 2009, 12:49pm (top)Message 123: suge122--> Me either Lefty. I only ever saw the film. I'm (finally) reading The Last Olympian. I'm also reading a colorful children's copy of El Principe Y el Mendigo (Spanish edition of Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper). When he visited in April, my bio-dad brought me back a bunch of books. They are all teeny children's editions of classics, all published in the Dominican Rep. There's Poe, Virgil, Homer and so on in the set. They are really cute. But there has been so much other stuff coming out that I haven't read a single one. Also, the type is microscopic, so one would probably lose their eyesight reading them.I feel really guilty because every time he calls me, he asks me about the books, and I feeding him the same tbr line. Then, on Sunday, my mom told me he is flying in this Friday so I like, "CRAP!!" I'm trying to read at least one book so his feelings wont be hurt. I tell you, there is a price to having friends and family. I think I'm slightly crossed-eyed now. Jul 28, 2009, 12:54pm (top)Message 124: biblioholic29#123: Try getting a pair of reading glasses from a drugstore, I have some for when I read a book with exceptionally small print. I've finished me HP reread and am forcing myself to move on and not go back and reread them all again. Still slogging my way through Bleak House on gutenberg. I think I like Dickens when he writes 1st person, but not 3rd person. Since this one keeps switching between the two I'm occasionally riveted and occasionally bored to tears... Jul 28, 2009, 12:58pm (top)Message 125: sugeCool idea, Bib! Somewhere, I have purple half-moon reading glasses for when I moonlight as Dumbledore. I'll give them a try, but they usually give me a giant headache. Jul 28, 2009, 1:50pm (top)Message 126: biblioholic29Just make sure you only look at your book. Reading glasses will give you a headache if you wear them for walking around! Jul 28, 2009, 2:46pm (top)Message 127: cmbohnI had sort of a dud day yesterday. It seemed like every book I picked up was no good. I tried Fly on the Wall by Tony Hillerman and just couldn't get into it. Too much politics - so boring! And I have an ER book I just can't get into - The Forgotten Man. Super dry. And I read Sugar Cookie Murder, only to realize that it's more like a short story, with half the book being recipes! And, I had read it before! Very frustrating. So I tried reading more of Don Quixote, but just couldn't focus. I hate days like that! Jul 28, 2009, 3:10pm (top)Message 128: catbastetI have read Charmed Life, The Lives of Christopher Chant, and Witch Week. I liked them all a lot! Now I must decide what to read next. I have too many interesting books at the moment! ;) I suppose I should start with the library books... Jul 28, 2009, 8:26pm (top)Message 129: Ms_BellaI just finished Everythings Eventual and am starting Skeleton Crew. I have also started reading A Circle of Souls Which is very good so far. I am looking forward to recieving my next to reviewer books in the mail. I got 2 e-mails earlier today. Jul 28, 2009, 8:39pm (top)Message 130: MarensrWell I finished the first The Lightning Thief which was highly recommended at the Midwest meeet up and I suspect another volume will be in my future. I also finishing The Amnesiac and starting reading several biographies of Isadora Duncan -dramaturgical research. Jul 28, 2009, 9:34pm (top)Message 131: lefty33I'm glad you liked it, Maren! Cmbohn, I know what that's like. I hope you find something better! Jul 28, 2009, 9:59pm (top)Message 132: Espeon200I've been doing a lot of reading lately including such gems as The Dragon of Trelian, Foundation, The Homeward Bounders, and rereads of the later Harry Potter books. Right now I'm trying to get into Enchantress from the Stars, but it's slow going. Jul 29, 2009, 8:33am (top)Message 133: LadyNFinished The Reader, and now umming and ahh-ing. Think it may be time for World Without End Jul 29, 2009, 8:35am (top)Message 134: foggidawnI'm reading The Adventures of Sally right now -- I was in the mood for some Wodehouse. Jul 29, 2009, 4:31pm (top)Message 135: lefty33LadyN, did you like The Reader? Espy, I didn't know you had read Dragon of Trelian too. I love that one! :D Jul 29, 2009, 4:38pm (top)Message 136: kirbyownsI've had a hard time concentrating this month on new reads. So right now I'm finishing up SS. Jul 29, 2009, 6:36pm (top)Message 137: LadyN#135 - I did, yes. It was a very easy read - the short chapters helping to keep it pacy, and I found it asked interesting questions. I'm still chewing over the moral/philosophical question of whether or not you step in, potentially against the wishes of a friend, if what you're doing will benefit them. And that's just for starters. It's quite rich in food for thought, considering how relatively compact it is. I'm finding it difficult to formulate a review without spoilers though. I haven't yet seen the movie, but accidentally saw the trailer as I began reading it, which gave too much away, and I'm anxious not to do the same. Jul 29, 2009, 7:40pm (top)Message 138: pollysmithI'm rereading DH and something called The laughter of dead kings by Elizabeth peters Jul 29, 2009, 10:12pm (top)Message 139: cmbohnI just finished The Dead Father's Club, which is a remake of Hamlet. Only Hamlet is just 11. It was really good. Jul 30, 2009, 12:36am (top)Message 140: lefty33Thanks, LadyN! Good to know. I've been meaning to read it and you've just bumped it up my list. Cmbohn, I've added it to my TBR list. It sounds really interesting. I've always loved Hamlet. Jul 30, 2009, 5:45am (top)Message 141: LadyNYou're welcome lefty! Jul 30, 2009, 8:26am (top)Message 142: biblioholic29I read all of Finger Lickin' Fifteen in 4 hours last night. Tonight I'm going to start on (and finish?) Strangers in the Land of Egypt, unless my ER shows up today, in which case I'll be starting that. I've also got to get going on A Tale of Two Cities which I borrowed from Holly, but I feel like reading two Dickens' at once might make my head explode, so I'm waiting until I finish Bleak House for that. Jul 30, 2009, 12:09pm (top)Message 143: readafewI started Last Call by JD Seamus (can't find the right touchstones) I am pleasantly surprised so far in how good it is. Jul 30, 2009, 1:05pm (top)Message 144: elbakeroneFinished The Secret Garden earlier this week (glad to have finally read it!) and just got through I do (But I Don't) which was a fun Chick Lit summer read. Now I'm into Showdown by Ted Dekker which is very intriguing so far. Jul 30, 2009, 2:00pm (top)Message 145: biblioholic29#144: I actually think the sequel I Did (But I Wouldn't Now) is better, should you feel the urge for another chick lit read. Jul 30, 2009, 5:43pm (top)Message 146: cmbohnLefty - I'd love to hear what you think. It was in with the adult books, but I think older teens, who have read Hamlet, would enjoy it too. Aug 1, 2009, 9:15am (top)Message 147: biblioholic29Came home yesterday in a bad mood. Wasn't interested in TV so I thought I should read. I tried several books before deciding on a reread of Juassic Park, I decided rampaging dinosaurs eating everyone in sight fit my mood. Also, I haven't read it since 1993 right before the movie came out, so a reread seems reasonable. :) Aug 1, 2009, 10:06am (top)Message 148: lefty33*gently tiptoes around Bib* Aug 1, 2009, 11:14am (top)Message 149: PollyAnnaHP*whispering so as not to disturb the dinosaurs and Bib* I have finally finished Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and also Whoredom in Kimmage. I recently picked up a copy of Great Expectations at a local thrift store so I am now reading that. Message edited by its author, Aug 1, 2009, 11:15am. I'm reading Maisie Dobbs at Maren's recommendation -- I'm only a couple chapters in, but I like it so far.
