Can you guess it?

2Calwise
Aug 16, 2009, 5:40pm

"________ and sugar with your coffee?"

3SugarCreekRanch
Aug 16, 2009, 5:44pm

No thanks, I'll just have another Diet Pepsi.

Not cream.

cream

4Calwise
Aug 16, 2009, 5:49pm

how about what might rise if I decide to make tea instead?

5SugarCreekRanch
Aug 16, 2009, 5:56pm

Steam might make your kettle whistle, but it won't win this round of Crambo.

cream, steam

6Calwise
Aug 16, 2009, 5:58pm

what else might the noise the kettle makes be described as besides whistle?

7SugarCreekRanch
Aug 16, 2009, 6:02pm

EEEEEEEEEE! Not scream, but I like how it ties in with prior guesses. :-)

cream, steam, scream

8Calwise
Aug 16, 2009, 6:06pm

completely unrelated this time, but how about a great quantity of paper?

9SugarCreekRanch
Aug 16, 2009, 6:16pm

Not ream.

cream, steam, scream, ream

10Calwise
Aug 16, 2009, 6:20pm

how about how things appear? or a ray of light?

11Calwise
Aug 16, 2009, 6:21pm

or the line formed from sewing?

12SugarCreekRanch
Aug 16, 2009, 6:26pm

Not seem, beam, or seam.

cream, steam, scream, ream, seem, beam, seam

13Calwise

"wow, this jungle is ______ing with wildlife."

14SugarCreekRanch
Aug 16, 2009, 7:08pm

Not teem, or team.

cream, steam, scream, ream, seem, beam, seam, teem, team

15blondehornet
Aug 16, 2009, 9:00pm

how about to believe or judge?

16mirrordrum
Edited: Aug 16, 2009, 10:37pm

is it a unit of cultural information, such as a cultural practice or idea, that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another?

i do *not* understand this concept but it's the word that popped up first. go figure.

I I think I have it, or is it me squared. Thanks Joseph Campbell, wherever you are...

I have always deemed internet memes to be silly. But then, I thought it was pronounced "mee-mee". As in, "it's all about meeee!", which fits with the memes I've seen. Shows how much I know.

cream, steam, scream, ream, seem, beam, seam, teem, team, deem, meme

19mirrordrum
Aug 16, 2009, 11:45pm

it can be pronounced either way although meem is the preferred pronunciation.

lessee, is it one of the nice fissshes of the genus Abramas and in particular A. brama with silvery scales? is that it, preciousss?

20DirtPriest
Aug 16, 2009, 11:54pm

is it brightly reflective?

(My mistake on doubling meme, I thought it was mirrordrum's thread and she gave a too obvious clue. Oops)

21SugarCreekRanch
Aug 16, 2009, 11:57pm

Abramas Brama is a 70's rock band from Stockholm. It seems like there is a joke in here somewhere about Swedish Fish, but I don't quite have it. Regardless, my word is not bream.

cream, steam, scream, ream, seem, beam, seam, teem, team, deem, meme, bream

22SugarCreekRanch
Aug 16, 2009, 11:58pm

20: No worries. Meme waswas meantmeant toto bebe doubleddoubled.

Tech Point
Is it a small river, maybe with Kenny and Dolly as islands in it?

24SugarCreekRanch
Edited: Aug 17, 2009, 12:05am

Crambo players are both bright and reflective, but my word is not agleam.

cream, steam, scream, ream, seem, beam, seam, teem, team, deem, meme, bream, agleam

edited to turn off the strikies!

25SugarCreekRanch
Aug 17, 2009, 12:07am

I love the stream of guesses, but I'm not so wild about Kenny and Dolly.

cream, steam, scream, ream, seem, beam, seam, teem, team, deem, meme, bream, agleam, stream

26DirtPriest
Aug 17, 2009, 12:10am

Well, based on your profile picture I thought you might have four hungry children and a crop in the field. I did rule you out as coward of the county, though.

27mirrordrum
Aug 17, 2009, 12:12am

dirtpriest, i am horribly envious of your ability to come up with great guesses. disgusting creature. ;)

28DirtPriest
Aug 17, 2009, 12:15am

don't be too envious, my dear. I'm stumped as of right now. Wait, maybe not...
I declare it necessary that this is a guess..

29SugarCreekRanch
Aug 17, 2009, 12:57am

28: And now I'm stumped. Can you tell me a little more about your guess?

30DirtPriest
Aug 17, 2009, 1:00am

I ____ it necessary to elaborate...

31SugarCreekRanch
Aug 17, 2009, 1:03am

I am only coming up with deem, but it was guessed in #15 and ruled out in #18. Was that your word, or should I keep thinking?

cream, steam, scream, ream, seem, beam, seam, teem, team, deem, meme, bream, agleam, stream

32DirtPriest
Aug 17, 2009, 1:07am

Those crossed out words are apparently hard to read. My error. I must be tired so that's it for tonight.

33SugarCreekRanch
Aug 17, 2009, 1:12am

CLUES:
It has multiple syllables.
I first encountered this word in a book I'm currently reading.

34mirrordrum
Aug 17, 2009, 3:31am

could it be what George Meredith describes as "flashing" and "sudden-lighted"?

even if not, i like the image.

35SugarCreekRanch
Aug 17, 2009, 11:59am

Thank you for pointing me toward that poem!

But my word is not whitebeam. It is not any word that ends in 'beam' such as sunbeam, moonbeam, etc.

cream, steam, scream, ream, seem, beam, seam, teem, team, deem, meme, bream, agleam, stream, whitebeam, sunbeam, moonbeam, -beam

36mirrordrum
Aug 17, 2009, 12:20pm

yeah, i thought not but couldn't resist the word or the line(s).

am not going to guess any more as I'm manually swamped for the next 2 days and, on the off chance i won, I'd not be able to play responsibly. I'll follow with rapt attention, though.

37mirrordrum
Edited: Aug 17, 2009, 4:54pm

oh well nuts. it won't be this one but i can't resist the guess.

is it that ship Masefield imagines that brought Solomon from Ophir to Palestine, deep-laden with peacocks and ivory, with scented woods and sweet white wine?

edited for punctuation.

38SugarCreekRanch
Edited: Aug 17, 2009, 5:47pm

Quinquireme is quite a word -- no wonder you couldn't resist guessing! But, no.

cream, steam, scream, ream, seem, beam, seam, teem, team, deem, meme, bream, agleam, stream, whitebeam, sunbeam, moonbeam, -beam, quinquireme

39rolandperkins
Aug 17, 2009, 5:44pm

"Beam" has been ruled out, but is it

what a beam gives, or perhaps even sustains?

40SugarCreekRanch
Aug 17, 2009, 5:56pm

39 - I'm not sure I have this right, but is your word gleam? If that's not your word, I need a little help. Is the beam you speak of made of light, or is it a part of a structure?

cream, steam, scream, ream, seem, beam, seam, teem, team, deem, meme, bream, agleam, stream, whitebeam, sunbeam, moonbeam, -beam, quinquireme, gleam

41mirrordrum
Aug 17, 2009, 5:57pm

#38 yeah, it's a nice long word. comes from reading all that Mary Renault with the Greeks and Syracusans and such haring round the Aegean in their various 'remes.

my guess: is it the flow of water that turns the stone that grinds the wheat that goes in the bread that jack bakes?

surely you knew this word before reading one of those books but maybe not.

42SugarCreekRanch
Aug 17, 2009, 6:31pm

Not millstream. It is not any word that ends in stream.

cream, steam, scream, ream, seem, beam, seam, teem, team, deem, meme, bream, agleam, stream, whitebeam, sunbeam, moonbeam, -beam, quinquireme, gleam, millstream, -stream

CLUES:
It has multiple syllables.

It is not a compound word (ending in beam, stream, etc).
It's from zoology.

44mirrordrum
Aug 17, 2009, 7:02pm

aHA! i toyed with those but i didn't think they fit any of your books. i shall want to know which book and context at some point. :)

how about the axial thread of a chromosome? i can think of no way to make that more challenging or interesting.

45rolandperkins
Aug 17, 2009, 7:21pm

To mirrordrum"

Yes, "gleam" was my word.

46SugarCreekRanch
Aug 17, 2009, 7:35pm

Not axoneme. I can think of nothing witty to say about it, either.

Remember to check my profile to see which books I'm currently reading, it may help narrow it down.

cream, steam, scream, ream, seem, beam, seam, teem, team, deem, meme, bream, agleam, stream, whitebeam, sunbeam, moonbeam, -beam, quinquireme, gleam, millstream, -stream

47mirrordrum
Aug 17, 2009, 7:47pm

ah scr, i have checked your books. not twice, not thrice but. . .er, quadruple times. it hasn't helped yet as i know about them only: nebraska/magic, harry p/fantasy/magic and australia. *sigh*

forging on. . .

48Calwise
Aug 17, 2009, 8:16pm

is it a word for a platypus?

49SugarCreekRanch
Aug 17, 2009, 8:44pm

Calwise has got it!

The word was monotreme, a mammal that lays eggs. The only examples are the platypus and the echidna, which are only found in Australia in New Guinea. Bill Bryson wrote about them in A Sunburned Country.

Great game, everyone. Wonderful, witty guesses that taught me something. I'm looking forward to Calwise's game.

A tip for Calwise -- before selecting your word, scan the list and see if that rhyme has already been used. It's more fun to use a rhyme that hasn't been used before, so the guessers have to work harder.

50Calwise
Aug 17, 2009, 9:20pm

Yeah! New game to come soon, probably not till late tomorrow. Sorry.

51mirrordrum

congraters, calwise! about time you won one. fantastic job. marvelous word.

52DirtPriest
