I'd like to pick up a copy of Musashi's Book of Five Rings soon--but there are so many English translations to choose from! I'd love to get some thoughts and opinions from those of you who have read one (or more) of them.

I read the novelized version of Musashi's life and philosophy
Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa, Charles S. Terry, and Edwin O. Reischauer and was absolutely riveted for something like 1000 pp.
I know it's not the 'pure' Musashi, but man is it good and since you got no other answers...

I actually just recently heard about the novel (apparently it is the basis for the Vagabond manga), so it's interesting that you should mention it. I might have to look into it; thanks for the response.

I just returned from a trip to NYC, and to The Strand Bookstore, where I found a book about Japan that I did not have in my collection - called The Lone Samurai: the Life of Miyamoto Musashi by Wm. Scott Willson. Wilson translated Musashi's book but this is a biography of Musashi. I haven't read it yet but it looks wonderful. Discusses not only his swordmaship, but his philosphy and artwork. The book has chapters on the battles that he fought, has map showing locations. It also has a wonderful appendix. It is interesting to note that the title is a misnomer - Musashi was not a samurai but was bushi.
