I recently borrowed some CDs from the library.
One of them downloaded easily to my IPod, complete with details.
The others downloaded one track at a time and then when I attempted the second CD the tracks numbered 1 listed together, then those numbered 2 etc. Which means I'd be reading the book with shuffled chapters!
Any suggestions how to correct this?

I am not in front of iTunes so this is from memory so maybe someone else can confirm. Here is what I do to rip audio CD's to iTunes. I open iTunes, place the CD in the drive. It reads in to iTunes. I say NO to import the CD. I use Control A to select all the tracks. Then from one of the pulldown menus, maybe TOOLS, I select JOIN TRACKS. Then I click on import CD. This makes one iTunes track which includes all the chapters on the CD in order. I repeat for the remaining CDs.

Another way is to rename your "Albums" so that each has a different title. So the first CD is Title of Book (CD 1) and then the second CD is Title of Book (CD 2).

Edited: wrong tags!

Thanks Vic, I'll give that a try.

LP, that is what I started doing but is there a quicker way rather than labelling each track individually, which was very time consuming?
Can I enter that info just on the first track?

I'm also having trouble deleting the CD that I shuffled. I got the tracks off my IPod into the PC and deleted them, expecting it to do the same on the IPod too (it was attached) but it didn't.

And one furthur question - how do I tell how much space is left on my IPod - my son did it but I can't find how!

There are some people who are just stuck in the last century and shouldn't be trusted with anything more complicated that a video recorder!!!!

Select all the tracks you want to change (since they're probably still separated, hold down the Control key as you select each one) then right click somewhere in the selected range. You can't change all of the tags, but the "group" tags (like Album and Artist) can be edited.

In iTunes, in the left-hand menu, select the iPod. You should see a "Summary" tab which would tell you how much of the iPod you're using.

I put the title of the CD on "new playlist", then load the CD into the disc drive.

When the screen asks me if I want to load the disc, I say no.

Then I highlight (select all) the disc tracks together, then pull down the file button and open "get info", check to make sure all the info is correct (sometimes another title will pop up, can't tell you why), then hit okay button on the bottom, and drag the entire highlighted page to the title of the book on the playlist side.

That disc begins to load directly into the the menu. I do this for each disc of the CD.

It goes much faster than it seems once you get the hang of it. When you sinc your iPod, you open music, and you will find all the books you've loads there. Click the books you want to keep at the moment (how many will depend on how big your iPod memory is). Sinc and when it's finished sincing you will see the remaining gigs on the bottom of the page.

Each time you sinc, only those books that you've clicked (or songs), will be on the iPod. The rest stays in iTunes. You delete the material on iTunes separately whenever you feel like it.

I hope I've made this clear. I got the info from a magazine but I don't have those instructions anymore. Once I worked through it, it became second nature to me. I've got about 12 books on my iPod right now, but I listen so much, I'm forever adding and deleting. You can keep them on iTunes, but only those books I really think I want to hear again do I keep there.

OK, here's my issue. I have no problem copying audiobook CDs in to iTunes and sync'ing with my iPod. Under the audiobooks menu on the iPod I see a list of my books by CD in the following format: bookname(Disc xx). They are in alphabetical order and in the order I want to listen. The problem is that at the end of a CD, my iPod hops me to another CD and it is NEVER the next CD in the menu. In fact, it usually is another book entirely. I am probably missing some setting or some selection during the copying process. Any suggestions?

>7 Vic33:, Once I've ripped all the cds into iTunes, I always select them all and edit the information, changing album name so that they are all one group, not listed as separate discs any longer. As long as the disc X of Y information goes in correctly, they will all stay in the correct order.

#7 Do you have the shuffle setting on on your ipod? Another way to make sure they play in the correct order is to make a playlist for the 'book' (and make sure shuffle is not enabled) and sync that to your ipod.

This advice comes from personal experience - I ripped a Harry Potter book to itunes in the very short tracks that is the default and played them shuffled. If I hadn't already read a paper copy and realised the problem I'd have listened to a very strange story...

Duh! Shuffle was on. I guess I thought shuffle did not affect audiobooks but is does.

Although I've given up trying to put audio CD's into "audiobooks" on my ipod, I do have a relatively easy method of putting them into "music".

First, put in the CD. Itunes will then display the tracks. Select all the tracks by clicking on the first track and "shift" click on the last. Go to "advanced and click on "join tracks". Click "advanced" again and click on "submit details" (or something like that- you can't miss it). Fill in the CD details (I usually put the name of the reader in the composer slot). I also select "gapless" as this eliminates gaps between tracks. Then hit "import CD" at the bottom right of the screen.

Repeat this process for each CD until the whole book is on the screen.

When it has finished importing, I create a new playlist and highlight the whole book and click and drag it to the playlist.

I hope this is of some help.

To make the books audiobooks rather than music, select them, right click, choose info and then options and under Media kind choose audiobooks. You can also tick remember playback position, which I find very useful for long tracks.
