A troubled teen. Father, Mother and teen all try to do the right things, but they just can't work it out. Teen leaves home and tries to go to school, and work to support himself, but just keeps making bad choices.
I think the title was something like "No Time for Goodbye" but I can't find a book by that title with that plot. The story haunts me.
