2 - I think the idea may be that everyone fears zombies. As opposed to the other two where the protagonists aren't aware of the danger, but some communication-hampered town is?

If we're going to put on our know-it-all hats, he was never called the monster in the book, either. He was called 'the creature.'

Yet, all through my childhood in the 60s we called the creature/monster Frankenstein, and the guy who sewed him together Dr. Frankenstein.
