I remembered two names for the same kind of tree.
It's a kind of larch, one that likes cold.

interestingly enough, but absolutely unrelated to this game, 'tamarack' is the name of the main surfing spot in the town where i grew up. so-named because it's at the western end of tamarack street. :)
