Gregory Kiewiet (March 17 at 7:00pm)
Gregory Kiewiet reads from In the Company of Words.
"What people are saying about In the Company of Words:

'Closely watched scenes; ringing shifts, gaps; breathtaking progressions, appear in and make up Gregory Kiewiet’s remarkable collection. This book reverberates. It beautifully provokes, moves, even unsettles.' Lynn Crawford

'To seek ... (more)the company of words is to cultivate the silence in which language speaks. It is as much a matter of listening as of writing, and a willingness to think with words as they exist. In their wry compassion for “a world that needs no introduction” and their fierce humility in the face of its “barbed wire hang-ups,” these poems compel and reward our attention.' Ted Pearson

'There are brilliant traceries in these structures - the poem as filament, the poem as grid. Within them a keen interplay between the abstract and the pointedly concrete. Much of the work of language here goes on in the synapse, in the gap between losses, distances, political “things” at work, climates and unnamed cultural weather, the sudden detail, tatters of conversation, something overheard . . . these themes or movements carried through in an impressive variety of forms and approaches: at first this variety is disarming, but the altercations between stripped and scattered structures and established devices, between the word-driven lyric and something like the memory narrative (done ever so lightly), between translations and poems conceived by the author in Dutch and rendered then into English, becomes at last, by a kind of wonderful accetion, an intriguing and appealing collection, something to be picked up and carried around.' Edward Haworth Hoeppner

Gregory Kiewiet recieved his B. A. in English and Art History from Oakland University (Rochester, MI) and M. A. in English (Creative Writing) from Wayne State University (Detroit, MI) - he is currently pursuing an MFA in Writing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Previous work has appeared in http://www.markszine.com/ Dispatch Detroit, Graffiti Rag, Woodward Magazine, and Box."

Release Party: New Books and Publications by Nine Author/Artist/Publishers (May 5 at 7:00pm)
Quimby’s will host an evening of new books and publications by nine author/artist/publishers.

Devin Bustin, Rebecca Cooling-Mallard, Cortney Philip and Sean O’Connell consider the object of the book and the act of reading as integral to the generation of textual projects. Mary Kiolbasa, Stephanie ... (more)Sauer, Kristine Servia, and Dannielle Sommer have constructed printed publications that reflect collaborative projects.

Devin Bustin plays music in a band called Asher Lev, teaching Chicago’s suburbs to rock. He’ll present a book of sentences that do the work of a chiropractor, that adjust the angle of the neck.

Rebecca Cooling-Mallard is combing the dust off her skin with the language brush. She will present a reading and diagrams of the constellations of the southern hemisphere as filtered through the shape of Adrienne Rich’s poem “The Planetarium.”

Sean O’Connell is textually engaged in the aftermath of music and poetry in the twenty-first century: most often inhabiting a body that has lasted twenty-three years and exists in proximity to books: but at other times occurs digitally via telewebpresence. His project: books made: to be musical instruments and the score simultaneously, to be read through tactical performance, to be handled and sounded.

Cortney Philip is a Chicago writer who never loses at cribbage. A Food Family History reconstructs a family narrative through food verbiage and cardboard boxes.

Mary Kiolbasa is a graduate student, studying poetry at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her Popsicle recipe book is one component of a larger project, which makes a close study of ice, in terms of consumption.

Stephanie Sauer’s work focuses on intersections of various kinds, from myth and culture to language and medium. Her current publication features a collection of sketches by General Esteban Villa of the Royal Chicano Air Force.

Exercise 1: Evident and Invisible Interactions is a correspondence exchange project between groups in the Caribbean and North America. The booklet “EXERCISE I,” published by Fold Press, gathers all the documentation generated within the exchange. Fold Press is an independent publishing project founded by Kristine Servia, a first year graduate student in the Fiber and Material Studies department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Danielle Sommer is an artist and writer earning her Masters in Visual and Critical Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Here/Now (March 15, 2008) is the first publication in a series designed to document how individuals understand the idea of “here” while at the same time creating a tangible connection between a variety of perspectives and communities. Everyone who participates in the documentation receives a copy of the finished publication and is asked to pass the name of the project on to others for future documentations.

Life Sucks is the story of Dave Marshall. The girl he’s in love with doesn’t know he exists, he hates his job, and ever since his boss turned him into a vampire, he can’t go out in daylight without starting to charbroil. Undead life in its uncoolest incarnation yet is on display in this cinematic, supernatural drama told with gallons of humor and hemoglobin. In striking, colorful, B-movie style artwork and light-hearted, intelligent writing by Jessica Abel, Gabe Soria, and Warren Pleece, Dave Marshall’s story comes alive – in a vampiric kind of way.

La Perdida is the story of Carla, an American estranged from her Mexican father, who heads to Mexico City to “find herself.” Her intense desire to make a connection with Mexico and her unwillingness to see the impact of her own history on her understanding combine to turn an innocent journey down a dark path. A story about the youthful desire to live an authentic life and the consequences of trusting easy answers, La Perdida is a story about finding yourself by getting lost.

(more)Wrestling after a Q&A.

BOB CALHOUN is the author of Beer, Blood and Cornmeal: Seven Years of Incredibly Strange Wrestling. In the mid 1990s, San Francisco rocker Bob Calhoun took the name of Chicago comic book kung fu huckster Count Dante and joined the punk rock wrestling troupe Incredibly Strange Wrestling (ISW). ISW emerged from the back alleys and seedy clubs of San Francisco’s South of Market scene to headline the historic Fillmore and barnstorm North America on the Van’s Warped Tour. At the height of its popularity, Green Day’s Billy Joe Armstrong and Metallica’s James Hetfield could be seen tossing tortillas (which the promoters supplied) at ringside with the rest of the hell heads, boozehounds and tattooed party girls that made up ISW’s rabid following. It’s a story of urban misfits risking their necks for local celebrity in one of America’s most famous cities all told against the backdrop of the dot com boom and bust and an increasingly corporate entertainment industry.

FLOYD WEBB: Director and producer of the documentary film “The Search For Count Dante.” From Clarksdale, Mississippi Delta and raised on Chicago’s Southside, Floyd Webb’s background includes global work in cinema, photojournalism, publishing and advertising. He has found all of these experiences useful as a convergent worker, designer and consultant for the Internet.

THE2NDHAND #30: "Gives Birth to Monsters" Release Party: SPENCER DEW (January 9 at 7:00pm)
SPENCER DEW reads from THE2NDHAND #30: "Gives Birth to Monsters".
We convene for the release of the 30th installment of THE2NDHAND’s broadsheet series, marking the magazine’s ninth anniversary and eighth year of hosting Quimby’s events, coincidentally, for which opportunity we are always grateful, if not quite gracious in our gratefulness at all time. Yes, there ... (more)were pork chops involved, unfortunately, at one time. THE2NDHAND No. 30 features the “Gives Birth to Monsters” short by Spencer Dew, a tale of one man’s small heartbreak, the backdrop to a contemporary landscape of well-meaning but ultimately shallow political activism, fractured communicative lines, and more ultimately enduring drives toward total inebriation. In classic Dew fashion, he’ll have you laughing all the way to brink of the void. The issue also features excerpts from THE2NDHAND’s David Foster Wallace collaborative mini-tribute by THE2NDHAND editor Todd Dills and Bellingham, Wash.-based Doug Milam, author of our 27th broadsheet.
