Booksigning: Bob Ingle & Sandy McClure (April 17 at 7:00pm)
You probably know the story of the N.J. governor who put his Israeli boyfriend on the payroll in charge of homeland security, and later quit, declaring himself “a gay American.”You probably heard about the U.S. senator who decided to run for Jersey governor and gave his union-leader gal pal a $6 ... (more)million parting gift. Maybe you read of the multi-millionaire developer who hired a hooker to have videotaped sex with his
brother-in-law, and then sent the tape to his sister.
But here are some stories you may not know:The state judge who claimed a broken toilet led her to steal watches
The state senator whose brother-in-law was a hit man
The history of how the mob muscled in on Atlantic City even as state officials
swore to keep the wiseguys out
How mob-connected businesses, banned across the country,
somehow get work in the Garden State.
You can’t make this stuff up, and Ingle and McClure haven’t. Everything in The Soprano State is real, but it reads like fiction. Rudolph Giuliani, Al Capone, Jimmy Hoffa, Machiavelli, Steven Seagal, and Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff make appearances too. It will make you laugh, and even a little angry —
and may make you want to move or really glad if you live in another state.

Booksigning: Ted Kerasote (June 4 at 6:30pm)
Ted Kerasote's writing has spanned the globe and appeared in dozens of periodicals and anthologies, including Audubon, National Geographic Traveler, Outside, Salon, and The New York Times. He is also the author and editor of six books, one of which, Out There: In the Wild in a Wired Age, won the National ... (more)Outdoor Book Award.Merle and Ted found each other in the Utah desert. Merle was about ten months old, surviving on his own, and looking for a human to hang his heart on. Ted was forty-one, liked to write about animals, and had been searching for a pup whom he could shape into a companion. The training went both ways. Ted showed Merle how to live around wildlife, and Merle reshaped Ted's ideas about the complexity of a dog's mind, showing him how a dog's intelligence could be expanded by allowing it to make more of its own decisions. Acting as Merle's translator, and using Merle's life and lessons as a door into the world of dogs, Ted takes us on the journey they shared. He explores why the dog-human bond is so intense and how people and dogs communicate so readily with each other. He also uses the latest wolf research—showing that wolves treat maturing pups as partners rather than as subordinates—to explain how sharing leadership with your dog, rather than being its alpha, can help to create a healthier, more self-reliant, and better-socialized companion. Funny, fascinating, and tender, Merle's Door is a moving love story that reveals how the partnership between dogs and humans can become far more than we have imagined.

(more)and Raven Stole the Moon (Pocket, 1998). He has also written a full-length play, Brother Jones, which received its first production in Los Angeles.Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver.Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals. On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zoe, whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoë at his side. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man.A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life . . . as only a dog could tell it.

Booksigning: Dr. Beth Grosshans (October 2 at 7:00pm)
Child psychologist Grosshans has worked with hundreds of families during the past 15 years. With the help of Burton, a clinical social worker with 35 years of experience, she outlines a plan to address the "mayhem and madness" of families that are out of kilter. The problem, as Grosshans sees it, is ... (more)an imbalance of family power. The kids are running the show, Grosshans claims, and making a "royal mess of it." Ineffective parents-fueled by the past 40 years of advice that emphasizes talking, feelings and children's self-esteem-have relinquished power, setting the natural hierarchy of the family on its head. The result is anxious, unruly children who run their apologetic parents ragged. Grosshan's solution is to help parents combine love with leadership; to that end, she offers a five-step program to restore order, self-control and cooperation. Taking time-out a step further, she guides readers through a method of calming children she calls the "parent hold." The author also addresses common problem areas, including sleeping, eating and toileting. Though readers may find some of her advice a bit stern (e.g., she nixes the family bed and disapproves of transitional objects), Grosshans emphasizes that spanking or bullying are not options. Her carefully scripted, levelheaded technique aims not to punish but to help kids graciously step down from their thrones.

Booksigning: William Lobdell (March 15 at 12:00pm)
William Lobdell's journey of faith—and doubt—may be the most compelling spiritual memoir of our time. Lobdell became a born-again Christian in his late 20s when personal problems—including a failed marriage—drove him to his knees in prayer. As a newly minted evangelical, Lobdell—a veteran journalist—noticed ... (more)that religion wasn't covered well in the mainstream media, and he prayed for the Lord to put him on the religion beat at a major newspaper. In 1998, his prayers were answered when the Los Angeles Times asked him to write about faith.Yet what happened over the next eight years was a roller-coaster of inspiration, confusion, doubt, and soul-searching as his reporting and experiences slowly chipped away at his faith. While reporting on hundreds of stories, he witnessed a disturbing gap between the tenets of various religions and the behaviors of the faithful and their leaders. He investigated religious institutions that acted less ethically than corrupt Wall St. firms. He found few differences between the morals of Christians and atheists. As this evidence piled up, he started to fear that God didn't exist. He explored every doubt, every question—until, finally, his faith collapsed. After the paper agreed to reassign him, he wrote a personal essay in the summer of 2007 that became an international sensation for its honest exploration of doubt.Losing My Religion is a book about life's deepest questions that speaks to everyone: Lobdell understands the longings and satisfactions of the faithful, as well as the unrelenting power of doubt. How he faced that power, and wrestled with it, is must reading for people of faith and nonbelievers alike.Remember that all books presented for signing must be purchased through the Clinton Book Shop, no exceptions. Proof of purchase is required.

Booksigning: Local Author: Wanda Blahut Wierzbicki (April 25 at 6:30pm)
Wanda Blahut Wierzbicki.
A soldier’ military might is inseparable from his intensely human characteristics. The latter coincide with and bolster his valor in wartime. Sgt. William D. Blahut, Jr. (“Bill”) exemplified this truth. Born into a nurturing household in Whitehouse, New Jersey, Bill’s formative years were filled ... (more)with the promise of someday emulating his father, a World War Il state trooper and New Jersey paratrooper. Love for and from his parents and sister, Wanda, provided inspiration and the foundation for his military goals; but destiny’s capricious hand attempted to thwart his dreams when, at age five, he sustained nearly fatal injuries in a car accident Notwithstanding his tenuous odds of survival and ensuing physical limitations, Bill surprised medical science and his family by working his way back to health. Then, just before he turned nine, the family’s emotional resilience was tested once again when Bill’s father suddenly passed away. In a seemingly endless cycle of challenge, the family bravely clung to each other and rallied, with Dad’s memory and Mom’s quiet perseverance as their pillars of strength. Bill’s dream never faded — at least in thought — and could not be suppressed. In an effort to join the National Guard, he surpassed the limits of ordinary human potential, demonstrating remarkable physical and mental prowess. Bill confronted the dualities of tragedy and triumph with uncommon dignity and courage. For seven months, he served with distinction in Iraq and came home — under circumstances which no one ever could have conjured. His life was — and ever will remain — a testament to finding beauty in the moment and recognizing what is truly important.

Booksigning: Lily Burana (May 9 at 6:30pm)
An all-American love story about a former punk-rock stripper and her unlikely marriage to an officer in the U.S. Army.LILY BURANA is the author of the acclaimed memoir Strip City and the novel Try. Her writing about the domestic side of military affairs has been published in the New York Times Op-Ed ... (more)pages and Slate. Other features and criticism have appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, GQ, Glamour, Self, The New York Observer, The Village Voice, Slate, Entertainment Weekly, Salon, and many other publications. She has been a contributing editor at New York Magazine and SPIN.Here is what Publisher's Weekly said of Lily's new book former stripper, Burana (Strip City) married a major in the U.S. Army and records, in this heartfelt though long-winded confessional, her attempts to render their two very different worlds compatible. Burana enjoyed a decidedly checkered past, from “accidental teenage communist” to peep-show girl and stripper in New York and San Francisco (she fondly recalls her Playboy shoot), before meeting “Major Mike” at a ceremony in a Brooklyn cemetery in 2000. She was attracted by his sense of order and honor, even charmed by his military jargon, while he admired her rebelliousness, though these same qualities would challenge their relationship over time. Living together in a condo near Fort Meade, Fla., where Mike was stationed, segued into a quick marriage (she called herself a “War on Terror” bride), before he was deployed to Iraq for six months in 2003, creating for her a painful personal trial of waiting and self-discipline. Their move to West Point underscored her new role as military wife, and she embarked on a gloomy, unstable period of psychological turmoil requiring therapy and medication for her own brand of post-traumatic stress disorder. Marriage counseling worked for them, bucking the high divorce rate within the armed forces, and Burana concludes her memoir on a positive note, having made peace with the army's fallibility and found her own place in it.

Booksigning: Tom Folsom (May 14 at 6:30pm)
A powerful collision of true crime and pop culture, The Mad Ones captures the revolutionary spirit of the sixties and brings to life one of the most vibrant antiheroes in American history.TOM FOLSOM is a writer, director, and producer of television documentaries for A&E and Showtime, and the co-author ... (more)of Mr. Untouchable: The Rise, Fall and Resurrection of Heroin's Teflon Don, written with its subject, drug kingpin Nicky Barnes. He lives in New York City. Here is what Kirkus Review said about Folsom's new bookDocumentarian Folsom (co-author: Mr. Untouchable: The Rise, Fall and Resurrection of Heroin’s Teflon Don, 2007), grittily evokes the period (1950s and ’60s) and the place (New York City) in which the Gallo brothers—Brooklyn jukebox magnates and low-level hoods Joey, Larry and Kid Blast—struggled to rise to the top of the underworld. Jimmy Breslin titled his 1969 novel based on the same characters and events The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight, but Folsom, who takes his title from Kerouac, is able to tease some heroism out of his protagonists’ antiheroic lives, particularly that of the poetically inclined Joey. Granted, he was a punk who could only plead the Fifth in answer to Bobby Kennedy’s questions during the 1960 Senate hearings on organized crime. He bragged about hitting Murder Inc.’s Albert Anastasia as he waited for a shave in a Midtown barbershop, and unsuccessfully took on the Profaci crime family in a brazen but poorly executed coup attempt, spending most of the ’60s behind bars on an extortion rap. So how did Joey become the toast of the town from the time of his release until his public 1972 execution at a spaghetti joint in Little Italy? Jerry Orbach, who played the character inspired by him in the film of Breslin’s novel, was among the New York players who treated Crazy Joe like the “King of the Streets,” as an epic song penned by Bob Dylan and dramatist Jacques Levy called him. In prose as tight and hard-boiled as any James Ellroy novel, Folsom focuses on the quirks that made Joey an unusual kind of gangster. He modeled himself after the giggling psychopath played by Richard Widmark in the film noir Kiss of Death; he was fascinated bebop, action painting and existential philosophy; he made alliances across racial lines, including one with Folsom’s previous subject and literary collaborator, Harlem drug dealer Leroy Barnes.
