Description: The Academy of Natural Sciences is Philadelphia's Natural History Museum. The Academy was founded in 1812 and is the oldest natural science research institution and museum in the Americas. Items on display include more than a dozen dinosaur's skeletons, two Egyptian mummies, and realistic wildlife in dioramas depicting habitats from three continents. The museum also houses aritfacts from stuffed birds used by John James Audubon, specimens from the Lewis and Clark expedition to Thomas Jefferson's fossil collection.

The Ewell Sale Stewart Library

The library is named in honor of Ewell Sale Stewart (1924-1987), a longtime benefactor of the Academy. It houses an impressive collection of rare, beautiful, and important works spanning five centuries, as well as, scientific journals and recent publications relating to the natural sciences. One highlight on display in the library is their copy of Audubon's masterpiece publication, The Birds of America. The library is located on the second floor of The Academy of Natural Sciences museum.

Appointments to visit and use the library are required in advance.

Together, these men introduced lustrous evergreens, fiery autumn foliage, and colorful shrubs that shaped the Georgian landscape. They also brought science and rational thought to horticulture. As friends, rivals, and enemies, their correspondence, collaborations, and squabbles make for a riveting human drama set against the backdrop of the emerging British Empire and America's magnificent forests. As botany and horticulture became a science, the garden became the Eden for everyman. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Andrea Wulf was born in India and moved to Germany as a child. She now lives in Britain where she trained as a design historian at the Royal College of Art. An acclaimed writer and garden historian, she’s co-author with Emma Gieben-Gamal of This Other Eden: Seven Great Gardens and 300 Years of English History. She has written for The Sunday Times, Financial Times, The Garden, The Architects’ Journal, and regularly reviews for The Guardian and The Times Literary Supplement.
