Stephen Sondheim.
Rare Appearance! “The greatest and perhaps best-known artist in the American musical theater.” –Frank Rich (The New York Times) The greatest (and perhaps last great) Broadway composer and lyricist of his generation, Stephen Sondheim stands alone among his peers as the true heir to such Broadway ... (more)masters as Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, and Irving Berlin. Getting his first big break as a lyricist for Leonard Bernstein’s immortal score for West Side Story, Sondheim went on to revolutionize musical theater with intricate and emotionally complex works full of unique musical ideas, daring subject matter and stunningly original lyrics. Some of Sondheim’s most famous shows include A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George, and Into the Woods. A longtime fan and advocate, New York Times columnist and former theater critic Frank Rich interviewed Sondheim for The New York Times Magazine cover story to mark the artist’s 70th birthday. An Evening with Anne Lamott & Elizabeth Gilbert (March 28 at 8:00pm)
In her highly praised books, Anne Lamott invites readers to share her most intimate moments, from her father’s fatal battle with brain cancer in Hard Laughter to her own struggles with addiction in Traveling Mercies. With self-effacing humor and honesty, Lamott presents real-life questions about faith, ... (more)grief and family. Her best-selling books do not shy from anger or pain. Nonetheless, it is her hope, wit, and authenticity that resonate most in all of her work. Armed with a lot of charm, and a comic’s sense of timing, journalist, novelist and short-story author Elizabeth Gilbert is one of those few writers who writes the way she talks, and talks the way she writes—with intelligence, wit and undeniable quirkiness. Her most recent memoir, Eat, Pray, Love, chronicles the year she spent traveling around the world in search of personal restoration after a difficult divorce. These two best-selling writers join forces in a very special evening of readings, commentary and audience questions.
Azar Nafisi & Marjane Satrapi in Conversation (April 16 at 8:00pm)
UCLA Live Exclusive “[Reading Lolita…is] a stirring account of the pleasures and deepening of consciousness that result from an encounter with great literature and with an inspired teacher.” —Susan Sontag Azar Nafisi is best known as the author of the national bestseller Reading Lolita ... (more)in Tehran: A Memoir in Books, a moving and often harrowing portrait of the Islamic revolution in Iran and an incisive exploration of the transformative powers of fiction in a world of tyranny. The New York Times best-seller has been translated in 32 languages, earning numerous awards and critical adulation. Expelled from the University of Tehran in 1981 for refusing to wear the veil, Nafisi is a powerful advocate for gender reform, and women’s role in the move towards an open society in Iran. She left Iran for America in 1997, where she currently lives and teaches at Johns Hopkins University. Nafisi will be joined in discussion by fellow Iranian-born writer Marjane Satrapi, whose eloquent, black and white graphic novel Persepolis was hailed as a dazzlingly singular achievement. Wise, funny and heartbreaking, Persepolis tells the story of Satrapi’s childhood in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. The highly anticipated release of the animated feature Persepolis, which Satrapi and a team of 90 artists painstakingly drew by hand, is scheduled for theatrical release in fall 2007.
