Amenities: food/drink

Description: This is a large shop with a deceptively small frontage. It holds a fantastic stock of both new and secondhand books. The largest space here is the Norrington Room, which was dug out from beneath the quadrangle of Trinity College. Needless to say, the shop has appeared in the "Inspector Morse" series.

This shop also has a rare book department.

Colin Tudge (November 19 at 7:00pm)
Colin Tudge reads from Consider the Birds.
Ever heard of a tool making crow, the great co-operation of the penguins or birds that navigate by the stars? Believe it or not these are just a few examples of the ways in which the animals, thought by some to be the last remaining dinosaurs, differ. Birds are beautiful, lively, intriguing - and all ... (more)around us. They have minds: they feel, they are aware, they work things out. And so, by considering the birds, asking how and why it is possible for them to be so different, we gain insight into ourselves. All animals are equal - but some, as George Orwell said, are more equal than others, and birds, most people would surely agree, are in the very first rank.

In his new and endlessly absorbing book Colin Tudge explores the life of birds all around the globe. From their secrets of migration and flight to their complicated family lives he discovers how they live, why they matter and whether they are indeed dinosaurs. He shows how birds - who are like us in the general sense but very different in the particulars - live and think. A talk for biologists, ornithologists and bird lovers alike.

David MacKay (June 29 at 6:30pm)
David MacKay reads from Sustainable Energy - Without the Hot Air.
On Monday 29th June at 6.30pm, David Mackay will be talking about his book, Sustainable Energy - Without the Hot Air. He will be in conversation with Chris Goodall. Addressing the sustainable energy crisis in an objective manner, this enlightening book analyses the relevant numbers and organizes a plan ... (more)for change on both a personal level and an international scale - for Europe, the United States, and the world. In case study format, this informative work answers questions surrounding nuclear energy, the potential of sustainable fossil fuels, and the possibilities of sharing renewable power with foreign countries. Hailed as a 'game-changer' and written from a 'pro-arithmetic' point of view rather than with any specific bias in mind, David Mackay reframes our understanding of power consumption and production - from the mobile phone-charger to the nuclear power station - by expressing it in a single unit of measurement: kilowatt-hours per day (k/Wh/d). "Energy policy is crucial for the world, and a wide public should be engaged in debate and decisions on these issues. But such debate must be grounded in realistic numbers and good physics. All the key principles are clearly and accessibly explained in this book. David MacKay has performed a great service by writing it." - Prof Martin Rees FRS, President of the Royal Society.
