Description: For more than twenty years the Bookshop Darlinghurst has been Australia's finest source of GLBT books, magazines, calendars and DVDs. Located in the heart of Sydney's famous Oxford Street, our store has been a cherished hub for the local and international queer community. If you've ever wondered what literary lesbians, bookish bears and pop culture poofs have in common, come and pay us a visit where you'll be welcomed by our friendly and knowledgeable staff.

When I first stepped into the store, I couldn't figure out why they only had certain literary authors (Genet and Proust) and not other major ones... until, noticing the abundance of nude and semi-nude calenders of men (and some women) it hit me that, being in the heart of the GLBT neighbourhood, it probably was a bookstore catering to the local community. I didn't visit much after that, though I lived in the area, mostly because the store was pretty small and had a rather limited selection of books. Just a block or two down the street - Oxford - were two much bigger and better bookstores - Ariel (for new books) and Berkelouw (for used books.) But I guess people who are looking for specific genres or titles unavailable in the other two might consider this a first stop.
